Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

The Hobbit may very well be Oscar-worthy, but my question is why would they bother? Warner has their contender. PJ and his people already have their Oscars. Would and Oscar make McKellen any more revered?
I raised the same question last year about Deathly Hallows. Their Oscar campaign happened to be a good fit with their DVD release. Jo and Warner could have cared less, IMO.
Tell me, seriously, why would anyone associated with The Hobbit care? Would PJ even bother to come over and schmooze for it? Would McKellen?
When people doubt this films Best Picture chances, I just sit back and laugh, because it will be epic, the 48fps will be a hit, and the box office will be amazing for this movie. It really could win Best Picture and get tons of nominations. Im thinkin: Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Supporting Actor(and maybe a chance of Best Actor for Martin Freeman, or they could move Mckellen from Supporting to lead?), Cinematography, Production Design, Film Editing, Makeup, Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Costume, Visual Effects.
“Should this not be THE most anticipated movie as Oscar bait this year?”
But the fact that it de facto isn`t is saying something. It isn`t forgotten, just nobody cares, well nobody among Oscar prognosics, that is. They moved on because this trilogy isn`t groundbreaking like LOTR but a blantant cash grab that only rabid Jacksonites try to justify. And 48 fps is going to play in only few theaters so it won`t have an impact of, lets say, hype that Les Mis actors were performing live.
Weren’t all three Lord of the Rings films nominated for Best Picture when there were only 5 nominees? And didn’t Return of the King win 11 (count ém ELEVEN!) Academy Awards including Best Picture? Should this not be THE most anticipated movie as Oscar bait this year?
It looks charming!
If it makes a lot of money, which it will, it has a really good shot, a tremendous one in fact.
As Sasha has said multiple times recently, people keep forgetting about “The Hobbit” but I think it has a pretty good shot, especially if the 48FPS thing is a big hit.
Rayner Unwin, the 9 year old who was asked to review for publication the manuscript for The Hobbit by his publisher father:
“”Bilbo Baggins was a Hobbit who lived in his Hobbit hole and never went for adventures, at last Gandalf the wizard and his Dwarves persuaded him to go. He had a very exciting time fighting goblins and wargs. At last they get to the lonely mountain; Smaug, the dragon who guards it is killed and after a terrific battle with the goblins he returned home — rich!
This book, with the help of maps, does not need any illustrations it is good and should appeal to all children between the ages of 5 and 9.”
PJ’s film looks to be made in the same spirit. It was originally an oral tale, told out of Tolkien’s head at bed time to his young children and written afterwards with no thought of publication, an adventure tale for the young that came to be appealing to adults….. in this case in the form of a franchise film.
So… just enjoy…. it will have more depth than most such films, and plenty of gags.
If Oscar was honest it would include children’t film in the BP mix more often, kinda did with the lovely Hugo. Hugo aside they are a big chunk the industry’s bread and butter.
I’m ready. Is it December yet?
