Good stuff.
Desplat is deserving, but he may get a run for his money from Life of Pi:

The whole Guardians score is already available to stream from the FYC website…

Its a good score, but his work on Rise of the Guardians is miles better than this. Its bombastic, almost Williams’ like.
Yeah, not a bad score, but I don’t like Argo very much, and I think The Master’s score is infinitely more memorable. So this ain’t getting my vote.
listen to ‘Once There Was a Hushpuppy’ from Beasts of the Southern Wild and tell me what track this year beats that. None so far.
This year I’ve seen Reality by Matteo Garrone (great movie about the world we live in), Argo by Ben Affleck (the best use of suspense in years), Moonrise Kingdom (a world so touching and funny to make me desperate to live there). Mr Desplat created 3 very different scores that serve very well the story and the spirit of each film. Amazing composer!
I also loved Thomas Newman’s score for “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and James Newton Howard’s score for “Snow White and the Huntsman”. Both superlative.
I hope they both get nominated this year, along with AD for “Argo” or “Moonrise Kingdom”.
I thought having the main character announce the instruments used in the film throughout the end credits was very original! Just another directorial stroke of genius by diretor West Anderson.
Just a good cliché score with one great moment: the whistles while in the airport shuttle. Shouldn’t. And voters for this category have been making unassailable choices lately, such as Atonement, Up and The Social Network.
Agree that this score isn’t his best. I enjoy parts, for sure, but overall don’t love it.
My favorite scores so far this year that I’ve heard are Brave and Anna Karenina. From the snippets I’ve heard, I expect “The Hobbit” may be my favorite when it’s all said and done, but I don’t want to listen to the whole thing until I see the film.
I agree with Lane
I am a huge Desplat fan but I think he’s spreading himself too thin lately, doing too many scores a year.
For me, The Ghost Writer and Fantastic Mr Fox are his best still.
My favourite score of the year isn’t even eligible – Salmon Fishing In The Yemen. Beautiful end credits suite.
sorry but the score is an uninspired bore. Beasts of the Southern Wild, Cloud Atlas, The Master, The Avengers and Samsara all easily best this one. Especially Beasts
And the Oscar goes to . . . Messieur Desplat!
Well deserved!
If you ever get a chance, listen to his scores for “Coco Avant Channel” or “Cheri”. They contain wonderful, beautiful music.
Desplat’s gorgeous score for ARGO added to amazing end result to a fantastic movie. If there is any justice, his work in this film should get recognized along with Affleck’s masterful directing and Terrio’s screenplay adaptation. All top-notch, in my book!
