HFPA Continues to Honor Women in 2012 with Jodie Foster Named Cecil B. DeMille Recipient

The HFPA is kind of showing up the AMPAS this year, what with Foster receiving the Cecil B. Demille award and the telecast on Jan. 13th being hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Something wicked this way comes and I’m liking it. I’m really really liking it.

Moreover, the person who announced the award was none other than Kristen Stewart, for whom the great Ms. Foster went to bat earlier this year over a flap that was none of our business. Way to go, Kristen Stewart. Way to go, Foster. Way to go, HFPA.

Of Foster, Variety says “the youngest actor to earn honor since Charlton Heston in 1967.”

Winner of two Oscars, star of Taxi Driver, and director in her own right, Jodie Foster is someone who has never stopped challenging herself. The award will be handed out January 13th.

  1. Way to go, HFPA.

True…for now. When they announce their nominations, I don’t think we’ll be saying the same thing.

  2. I’m not sure I’m ready for Foster’s career to be over quite yet…not that she has been working as consistently as she did in the late 80s up until Panic Room…

  3. Nice. Foster is an icon. I’m not sure her Oscar for The Accused stands the test of time, but The Silence of the Lambs still delivers. She needs to come back to the screen with a fury, in front and behind the camera. I was always disappointed she never got to make her depression-era Flora Plum circus story. Looking forward to Elysium.

  4. It´s nice to see that my fellow EU citizens are behaving themselves, genderwise. And the HFPA gave Mickey Rourke the win and nominated DiCaprio for Rev Road and J. Edgar. They are alright in my book.
Very classy of them to invite Kristen Stewart, too.

There’s just one reason why I am sad about this… this means that the film industry thinks that Jodie Foster is done. That she will never match her role in The Silence of the Lambs and that it won’t make a difference if they give it to her now or later. IT might be true, but come on, she was great just last year in Palanski’s Carnage! We shouldn’r writer her off just yet!

Otherwise, great actress, deserving nomination and a WOMAN no less!!!

    No.

Morgan Freeman won the DeMille Award last year. Because the film industry thinks he’d done? No.

Scorsese won the DeMille Award in 2010. Spielberg won it in 2009. Because they’re all washed up? Retired? Hardly.

  7. Best news of the week! Very, very well deserved.

And Jodie is not done. She has a couple directing projects coming up (Tv and movie), and most likely her biggest box office hit in Elysium. It’s amazing that she had a superb career, yet her biggest box office hit was Silence with 130 million. That is quality over quantity.

The Globes will be great with Tina c Amy hosting and now with Jodie receiving this!

  8. I agree with Foster’s career, it’s pretty outstanding… But the title of this article is HFPA Honors Woman for Cecil B. Demille… It’s been quite a while since the honoree of this award has been (DONE/RETIRED)… Lately, they’ve honored people who are very much still in the spotlight… However, If they were to honor a woman, it’s pretty obvious that Meryl Streep should be the next woman to be honored with this award… Her career tops 90 percent of careers in hollywood… I’m not saying she’s the BEST, but she has 8 Globes and more globe nominations than anyone… However, now that I think of it, she’ll probably get the honor eventually, after all she has won almost every other “Lifetime Achievement Award” already…

  9. I like Foster.

But isn’t she a little young to be getting this award at this stage of her career?

I would think there are others out there who may be a little more deserving of a “lifetime” achievement award (Debbie Reynolds, Doris Day, Joanne Woodward, Liv Ullmann, Liza Minnelli, Ellen Burstyn, Gena Rowlands) – just to name a few.

  10. Foster might seem “young” unless you consider she’s been in this business pretty much since birth…..and she’s done it all….and she’s done it all on her terms, always. She’s a titan. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of such an honor. Foster is definitely not done, she never will be done I suspect, but she does it her way and when she wants and she puts her family and children first.

Worth noting that Foster gave Jennifer Lawrence one of her first roles on the silver screen. If I see any young actress poised to be the next JF it is Lawrence…….she’s got the same appeal.

  11. Wasn’t this initiated by her agency? The Mel Gibson movie was a flop and her profile and prospects could not be lower. Not a particularly versatile actress either. No comedic chops. It’s a valentine from HFPA for a career that’s over. And there are women who’ve acted for more years and in a greater range of roles, in movies, on stage and television.

  12. Hmm, but Charlton Heston is not the youngest actor or actress to win the award. The youngest to win this award was JUDY GARLAND in 1962 at the age of 39 !!!
