Best Film Amour!
Very short Winner’s list:
Amour – 4
Shame – 2
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – 2
The Hunt – 1
Actors prizes went to Trintignant and Riva – both are not in Malta. Trintignant plays theatre, Riva is ill (“high fever” – let’s hope the best).
I’m currently watching the European Film Awards in Malta. Maybe it’s also working in North America: http://www.europeanfilmawards.eu/en_EN/efanight/player
Results so far:
Best Director: Amour
Best Script: The Hunt
Best Cinematography: Shame
Best Editing: Shame
Best Production Design: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Best Film Music: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
With word on Mirren being great in Hitchcock and Amour more likely to have a heavier campaign push, I think Cotillard could be left out at Oscar.
Agree with the comments about Mikkelsen. I think he’s the front-runner as well. Fantastic performance and The Hunt has five nods. Riva will win for Amour.
i dont see who is gonna make it, but its marion or emanuelle at the oscar´s not both people… dont dream…
and i rather to see emanuelle riva gettin in…
Cesar, thanks for the info. Must confess that I never noticed that before. Should pay more attention to European Film Awards. Something close to that, only in Cannes happened, guess – the actor and actress prize in Cannes 2006. Still think is weird, though.
@Joao Mattos: Why not? There’s no accident – in the past it happened more than once at the European Film Awards:
– 2001: nearly the whole male cast of Last Orders was nominated for best actor
– 2002: the whole female cast of 8 Femmes was recognized for best actress
– 2008: Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen are both nominated for Flammen & Citronen
Tinker Tailor snubbed in “Best Film”, “Best Director” and “Best Screenplay”… Probably TTSP will win in BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN and BEST COMPOSER…
“Amour is THE foreign language film of the year”
I find this a horribly condescending sentence. What does it mean? Why not say it is THE film of the year?
EUROPEAN ACTOR 2012:
François Cluzet & Omar Sy in INTOUCHABLES (Untouchable)
Let me understand that. These two are nominated together??!?!??!?!?!? As far I can remember, I never know any other case of actors or actress being selected for an award as one and only “being” for a single nomination, not each one separated – it’s different stuff in movie festivals, when a jury make any kind of choice, like the acting wards from Cannes-2006, and in the nature of these events there is no nominations, the choices are made at once. Weird, but interesting.
I would say Mikkelsen is the frontrunner. I wouldn’t mind any of those actors winning. A have a soft spot for Trintignant, but Mads gives a colossal performance that is hard to shake.
Never mind the Cotillard snub. The European Film awards NEVER carry over to Oscars and vice versa. The Artist was mostly ignored last year by the European Film Awards – and back when The Ghost Writer swept every category and won 7 awards (a record), it didn’t even get a single Oscar nomination.
It’s funny how these things work. So many English language film do well at the European Film Awards – but they hardly register at the Academy.
And Cotillard getting snubbed? Keira Knightley was snubbed by the BAFTAs for Pride & Prejudice, the one place she COULD have been a frontrunner to win – it was her home base. Still, she ended up with an Oscar nomination for it.
Statistically, Cotillard’s chances for an Oscar nomination is BETTER without a European Film Award, even though she’s such a star that it’s weird they snubbed her.
Mikkelsen is a threat to win Best Actor, though. Amour is not guaranteed every award here.
Weird that Danish film Jagten (The Hunt) keeps getting nominations (second most nomintations here after Amour) and winning best actor in Cannes – when it hasn’t even OPENED in DENMARK yet. As a Dane, it’s great to have another film getting noticed around the world (we Danes seem to do VERY well each year at the European Film Awards), but it’s frustrating to have one of our films popping up at so many award shows when we haven’t even had the chance to see the film ourselves.
WOW! Rust & Bone snubbed? Marion is phenomenal in it! Can’t figure out why she didn’t make the cut and why Winslet did. Schoenaerts and Audiard also snubbed! How is that possible?
My grandma was looking to rent one of her old favorite films, a western that ended with a little boy shouting the name of the itinerant hero. Imagine what she thought when she accidentally watched “Shame.”
Of course this story isn’t true, but hey what if it were?
Lol Cotillard could not even make the European Film Award and yet almost everyone seems to predict her for the Oscars. The fact is that once the critics awards are given her performance and her film will be overshadowed by Riva and Amour. Amour is THE foreign language film of the year, not De rouille et d’os. Just because it won some award in London doesn’t mean anything (London hasn’t any impact on US awards, hello ?).
And to the people who say “but Riva is an unknown”, how about Fernanda Montenegro ? And it’s not like Riva is coming out of nowhere, she was in Hiroshima mon Amour for Christ’sake. I think she can take the veteran spot.
Fairly conventional and slightly disappointing.
Some of it’s good though. The Actor category is strong and had it included Denis Lavant, this would have been one the strongest lineups in recent memory.
What a great list !!
Super happy for Emmanuelle Riva!!! and Darius Khondji !!
Glad to see the brilliant sets and art direction of Maria Djurkovic nominated here. She was so snubbed at the Oscars for Tinker Tailor Solider Spy.
I think Amour will sweep Best Picture, Director, Writing, Actress and Actor. No doubt !
Amour might start sweeping awards overseas like Intouchables did last year.
Amour and Caesar Must Die are two great films. The rest of the selection is not so interesting.
Very happy that Tinker Tailor is getting some well-deserved recognition, especially the score. I thought Kate Winslet was very good in Carnage, but don’t know why the film is nominated for screenwriting award as well.
I would say Riva for the win! Trintignant is great as well, but his competition is much stronger.
I’m just gonna lie to myself that these are the Oscar nominations haha
Damn, Caesar Must Die is truly overrated!
I never thought this much people would like that mediocre attempt at a movie…
Didn’t like Rust And Bone at all. Very pleased that it got zero nominations. Nothing about it is deserving of any awards.
About the noms, they actually throw up some competition. I thought Amour would just cake walk in all the Top 5 categories. Best Picture and Best Director are still absolutely in the bag. The other 3 not so much. I think it might lose screenplay to The Hunt/Beyond The Hills, actress to Hoss/Tiesel and actor to any of the other 5 gentlemen nominated.
But Picture and Director are an absolutely done deal, and from what I have seen, rightly so.
My Prediction right now:
Picture: Amour
Director: Michael Haneke – Amour
Screenplay: Michael Haneke – Amour
RU: Christian Mungiu – Beyond the Hills
Actress: Emanuelle Riva – Amour
Actor: Each nominee should win! They all were phenomenal! How can you choose one of them?
What the F… has happend with “Rust & Bone”? F… You European Film Award Members!!!! Marion Cotillard is French and Matthias Shoenarts is from Belgium, so they both could get nominated! Both gave two of the best performances of the year!
And by the way, what a joke! Kate Winslet got nominated and Christoph Waltz didn’t!!!!
All i can say is good start for the Award Season!
Actually, “Rust and Bone” just won Best Film at London Film Festival and it was one of the favourites for the Golden Palm at Cannes…quite strange they didn’t recognize nor the film, nor the director, nor the leading actors…
Nikita, Rust and Bone did win at the London Film Festival.
These nominations (Intouchables excluded) are MOTHERFUCKING FANTASTIC!!! I’m all over them. Yum yum yum.
Rust and Bone was eligible They just like Winslet’s performance in Carnage more than Cotillard’s performance. May be all the oscarblogers including Sasha overestimating her Marion’s chance for nomination? Film hasn’t win anything yet, in Cannes it was empty-handed too. Why the Academy should fall in love with it?
Interesting that Audiard’s film is snubbed. Also no nominations for the foreign Oscar entries from Bosnia (Djeca), Bulgaria (Kecove), Greece (Adikos kosmos), Netherlands (Kauwboy), Switzerland (L’enfant d’en haut) or Hungary (Just the Wind), which were on the selections list. Hungary makes me sad, it’s a great film!
Looks like a walkover for Amour and Haneke. The Best Actor category is thrilling and I’m happy that Germany’s entry Barbara got two well deserved noms, especially for Nina Hoss! It was unright, that she was snubbed at the German Film Awards and got no nomination.
So, no “Rust and Bone”? Was it ineligible?
