@Jerry, what you’re saying is not true at all. He is retiring and he’s said so countless times. Listen to his DP/30 interview for Magic Mike on YouTube.
I hope so, Jerry. I love Soderbergh. You never know what he’s gonna do and I can’t help but always be impressed that he is almost always his own DP and camera operator and often editor. I just think that rocks. It might also be why he was getting tired of doing films.
@Mel:
Soderbergh said the rumor about his retirement are not true. I think there are plans in the works for a sequel to Magic Mike.
What I love about Steven Soderbergh’s films is that he has tried so many different things. He doesn’t necessarily want to show off directorial-wise.
He wants to serve the movie first and after that his Ego.
He is something like the Vanessa Redgrave in the director’s world. Very productive, has tried different things, pays great attention to detail and leaves you wanting more, not because he can’t do it but because this is how he sees it. A great director indeed.
Drizzy Drake, how was Flight? I’m in the same boat as Kevin. Very mixed feelings. Not sure about the plot, screenplay. Talented actors in the mix. We’ll see.
I have mixed feelings. The tagline is unfortunate and we don’t really get a sense of what’s going on plot-wise (it’s not that it’s ambiguous… it’s downright confusing).
On the other hand, you can’t deny the talent involved, and I really like thrillers in general, so I might give this one a chance if the reviews are good.
Keifer, Soderbergh has said many times this is his last theatrical film. And he claims his final film ever is the one he is making now about Liberace but that’s going to be an HBO a movie. He has said he feels like he’s done all he wants to do in film and has hinted he might just like to do TV or something else. A simple google of Soderbergh and retirement will get you a bunch of info.
i thought the trailer looked great. i saw it tonight before “flight”. i’m always skeptical of films with a january or february release date though… so i’m skeptical of “gangster squad” despite a good looking trailer for the same reasons
Who would have thought that Soderbergh would find a muse in Channing Tatum?
I want to keep an open mind, but damn, that doesn’t look so good. Hope is just a bad trailer and the film is a bit less cheesy. I will try to keep my hopes up, though. Just because of Mara (my Lisbeth Salander) and Soderbergh (Sex, Lies and Videotape is one of my faves).
Soderburgh is and will always be one of our most diverse and accomplished filmmakers. THE LIMEY, SCHIZOPOLIS, TRAFFIC, OUT OF SIGHT, KING OF THE HILL, K STREET, BUBBLE, THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE, SEX LIES AND VIDEOTAPE, SOLARIS, GRAY’S ANATOMY, THE UNDERNEATH, THE INFORMANT, CONTAGION, ERIN BROCKOVICH, HAYWIRE, MAGIC MIKE–all are near perfect to perfect. His track record has a few spots on it, but I don’t begrudge a filmmaker for that. If any of us were filmmakers–and I’d be willing to bet few of us have the stamina or wherewithal to be so–we’d give our eyeteeth to have his resume. Anyone saying otherwise is just talking trash. Any time the man comes out with a movie, it’s worth checking out. SIDE EFFECTS looks fine, and with that cast and writer, it’s a slam dunk.
Of course he deserved to win. He had no competetion.
Are you kidding me?
Soderbergh’s Oscar win for “Traffic” was well deserved!
It’s probably the best thing Catherine Zeta-Jones ever did (as well as some other actors – Amy Irving, Dennis Quaid, Michael Douglas – to name a few).
It’s an intelligent, gripping drama. SS deserved his win that year.
No, it’s true. Soderbergh sucks quite a bit. And OSCAR-wise, is one of the worst ever to actually win one.
Good thing he won on a year when no-one gave a shit.
It’s pretty obvious from the trailer who dies in the film, yet they try to stitch the trailer together in a way to make people think that the person is featured in the rest of the movie is well. And maybe that’s even true.
Still I love Mara. Hate Zeta-Jones. Always have, always will. She lucked out as a singer/dancer in Chicago, stealing Meryl Streep’s third Oscar. But she has NEVER been very talented, and I can’t understand why Soderbergh keeps using her.
I’m gonna see this film, no doubt. I like and/or love most of Soderbergh’s films (Ocean’s 12+13 not included).
It looks great. A bit like Contagion, which I liked a lot. I don’t think it looks totally generic (which lines in particular, Jeremie?), but, you know, generic thrillers are no better or worse than generic Oscar-bait. And everyone acts much more respectful around the likes of My Week with Marilyn and Hyde Park on Hudson.
“about time he stops polluting our screens.” Oh fuck off.
Is this supposed to be some sort of smart arse parody of all the worse lines you can find in a generic thriller? I hope it’s Sodebergh’s last film. About time he stops polluting our screens.
Mmm..! polarizing!
Mel: “this is gonna be Soderbergh’s last theatrical feature”
Where did you find this out?
Did he give an interview claiming this or something?
I haven’t heard this before . . . and he’s such a good director . . . it would be a pity if he just opted out of film directing.
I’m going to remain optimistic because of all the people involved but to me this first trailer looks like a pretty standard thriller.
Hot damn. I can’t wait. This is gonna be Soderbergh’s last theatrical feature and our first chance to see Rooney post-TGWTDT. Hot and hot.
