Academy Extends Ballot Deadline by One Day

Anne Thompson reports that the AMPAS have agreed to extend the ballot deadline by one day so instead of those ballots getting in by January 3rd, they are now going to have to be in by January 4th.

“By extending the voting deadline we are providing every opportunity available to make the transition to online balloting as smooth as possible,” said Ric Robertson, Academy COO.  “We’re grateful to our global membership for joining us in this process.”In order to accommodate the extension and maintain security, the online voting system will be closed for two hours only (5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. PT) on Thursday, January 3. The system will re-open at 7 p.m. PT on January 3 and remain available to members until 5:00 p.m. PT January 4.

This is the first year the Academy is providing its membership the opportunity to vote online. Several voting resources are available to members, including assisted voting stations in Los Angeles, New York and London, and a 24-hour support call center.

Were the members having genuine problems, or was there a misreported perception that there were problems which generated this extension?

I wonder if anyone knows just how many AMPAS members do not return their ballots. Just curious.

I think the big story in the Hollywoodreporter about members having problems forced them to double check the issue and influenced this move. They had to have found genuine problems for them to extend the deadline.

Still think it’s dumb to have such a small window for nomination vote but extended time for winning vote. Means so many films weren’t seen by members before ending of phase 1 voting.

Well if they were having the kinds of problems the HR and others reported on they would have had to extend the deadline by more than one day.

I am hoping this one more day extension will help settle some sort of mixed feelings among […] voters during their holidays in Aspen, etc.; I mean, imagine someone (voters) having been strikingly torn and unsettled throughout the holiday period, between Argo and, let’s say, Katherine Heigl’s One for the Money. . . . [Sorry, that was sooo lame, lol.] xD

Anyway, seriously, I’ve always had feelings that most of the complaints or at least some concerns were being made primarily not by the elderly people (voters) but […] some big-shot shakers/movers and those superstars, as well as the studios whose films otherwise would have been at stakes. Just saying.

I remember hearing somewhere that the AMPAS voting rate is similar to the Presidential election rate… About 33% of eligible voters submit ballots.

Extended voting time? My god, I bet Florida Governor Rick Scott is already drafting a court challenge for AMPAS voters living in key counties.

Okay… I can’t help myself and I didn’t even like the movie but somebody has to say it…

“ONE DAY MORE….. One more day to revolution… we will nip it in the bud.”

Haha. Sorry, thanks for indulging me.

I’m hoping the one more day allows more voters to put in the compliance screener sent to them by Ann dowd!
