For the first time in probably their entire history, the DGA will announce their five nominees after the Oscar ballots have been turned in. That means that they can’t be counted to on as a “true north” this time. Some people don’t think they ever were but I have a feeling they lend legitimacy to an otherwise fringe contender. I could be wrong, of course.
The DGA membership is huge — 14, 500 members, where Oscar’s directing branch is much smaller, less than 500. That accounts for the disconnect between the DGA and Oscar most years. You can easily figure out three of the Best Director contenders this year. Right now, the hot three are:
Steven Spielberg, Lincoln
Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty
Ben Affleck Argo
It looks like the fourth name might be:
Ang Lee, Life of Pi
From there, you have one slot and three names:
Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained
David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook
Tom Hooper, Les Miserables
Wild cards: Michael Haneke, Amour; Paul Thomas Anderson, The Master, Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight Rises (thanks, readers, I had forgotten him but you’re right…could sneak in there)
The truth is that I have no idea, nor does anyone else, what five names the thousands of DGA members will pick. My instinct is to go for David O. Russell because I really think Silver Linings Playbook is likable enough to get a large consensus vote like that. DGA ballots have a longer time to gestate than Oscar ballots so those members will have more time to see the later breaking films, like Zero Dark Thirty, Les Mis and Zero Dark Thirty.
But that slot could go to any of these three. According to Anne Thompson, Life is Pi is popular with voters. Neither David O. Russell nor Tom Hooper are particularly well liked, not as well liked as Ang Lee and Quentin Tarantino, both of whom are beloved in the industry.
Finally, a twist: the Golden Globe hasn’t matched Oscar 5/5 for many years. I think it’s 1977 when last they matched 100%.
I will post my final predictions as we get closer to the date.

Predictions
1. Bigelow
2. Affleck
3. Spielberg
4. Lee
5. O’Russell
Steven Spielberg
Ben Affleck
Kathryn Bigelow
Ang Lee
Tom Hooper
Tom Hooper is well-liked enough at least heading into this race, having won recently over some heavy-hitters. Is Tarantino really that liked? He’s only won once for his Pulp Fiction screenplay. I can’t listen to him speak for more than 5 minutes at a time because he’s so full of himself, douchy, and manic. I’d say they respect him and like his movies more than they like him.

DGA Predictions:
1. Affleck
2. Spielberg
3. Bigelow
4. Hooper
5. Tarantino
Oscar Predictions:
1. Affleck
2. Spielberg
3. Bigelow
4. Hooper
5. Haneke
Personal Preferences:
1. Paul Thomas Anderson- The Master
2. Steven Spielberg – Lincoln
3. Michael Haneke – Amour
4. Ben Affleck – Argo
5. Andy Wachowski, Tom Tykwer & Lana Wachowski – Cloud Atlas
(Haven’t seen Zero Dark Thirty yet)
My DGA prediction:
Spielberg
Bigelow
Affleck
Lee
Tarantino
My prediction:
Spielberg
Bigelow
O’ Russell
Affleck
Hooper
My wish:
Tykwer & Wachowskis
Bigelow
Lee
Affleck
Tarantino
The DGA list will be very much like the Globes BD list looking at previous years. Last year David Fincher was able to make the cut with a non-BP film so there can be some surprises. That surprise can come from PTA, Hooper, Haneke, Russell, Zeitlin, Wright, Zemeckis – so it is wide open.
The DGA list:
Bigelow
Spielberg
Tarantino
Lee
Affleck
My wish:
Wright
Lee
Anderson
Haneke
Zeitlin
I’ll bet on P.T.Anderson for the fifth slot. But Tarantino is not too far from him, in my opinion.
—-STILL MORE over produced, over designed, over promoted
predictive programming and PC moral alibis for capstone ‘things unfolding’. . .
My prediction
Bigelow
Spielberg
Affleck
Lee
Tarantino
alt: Nolan replaces Lee
Spielberg for the win, Spielberg for the Oscar, but “Les Miz” for B. Picture with no nomination for Hooper, repeating “Miss Daisy” 23 yearsafter.
PTA and “The Master” dissapearance of the radar (at least in this moment) stays the most dramatic thing of this race so far.
Nolan, for The Dark Knight Rises?
HAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice joke…
Spielberg, Affleck, Bigelow, Lee, with that 5th slot going to Tarantino, Russell or PTA.
I’d love to see Mendes or Wright in this derby but that’s just not going to happen. I admire Hooper’s bio-pics but Les Miz is a mess, salvaged by a few good performances.
I went for a limb and predicted…
Ben Affleck
Kathryn Bigelow
Steven Spielberg
David O’ Russell
PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON
My predictions are for:
Kathryn Bigelow
Ben Affleck
Ang Lee
Quentin Tarantino
Steven Spielberg
I am now certain of two things:
1) Hooper is out. His direction of Les Miz was awful. The DGA and AMPAS are going to pass on him.
2) Mrs. Hathaway is this year’s best supporting actress winner, sorry Sally Field.
Tom Hooper not well liked?! He won this trophy 2 years ago! The DGA is also full of TV directors who are likely to vote Hooper because that’s where he started.
I predict…
Spielberg
Bigelow
Affleck
Hooper
Russell (alt. Lee)
Affleck
Tarantino
Bigelow
Haneke
Speilberg
(Hoping for PTA)
I think Benh Zeitlin for Beasts has an outside shot. The lore surrounding its filming should not be underestimated.
Spielberg
Bigelow
Affleck
Tarantino
Hanecke
My DGA prediction for the contest:
Spielberg
Bigelow
Affleck
Ang Lee
Leos Carax
Steven Spielberg
Ben Affleck
Kathryn Bigelow
Tom Hooper
Quentin Tarantino
Connor McVay:
I too think PTA has a decent shot at a DGA nod, for the reasons you mentioned. I think he’s out of the AMPAS hunt though.
My predictions:
Spielberg
Bigelow
Affleck
Lee
Russell
My preferences:
Haneke
Carax
Anderson (a movie that is more visually stunning but still intimate, take that Hooper! haha)
Lee
PTA
Runner-up: Spielberg
(haven’t seen Bigelow’s yet)
1. Spielberg
2. Bigalow
3. Tarantino
4. Hooper
5. Affleck
These are the best efforts that I have seen this year. I can only go by what I have seen. At least 4 of these I can imagine will make their way onto the Sight and Sound list one day – not sure about the frontrunners.
Ben Zeitlin
Michael Haneke
Leos Carax
Wes Anderson
Ang Lee or Peter Jackson
SLP projected to finish above Life of Pi this weekend in 433 less theaters and without 3D. It will also projected have the 4th best PTA in the top 12. Yeah, audiences aren’t responding to it…. LOL
these things almost make face palm at the lack of understanding of what entails being a director. Are we just voting for our favorite films, or actually the perceived notion of the work and skill that went into directing a film?
Nolan
Ang Lee
Wright
Paul Thomas Anderson
Hooper
Paul Thomas Anderson wasn’t nominated by the globes or BFCA for director for there will be blood, but he still got a DGA and Oscar nom. Do u think tht his exclusive use of 70mm film and directors like Darren Aronoskofy and Christopher Nolan saying how much they liked and appreciated the master will help his chances? He could pull nom like mailick last year. Then again, the oscars didn’t nominate Scorsese for directing Taxi Driver, so they can be idiots from time to time.
My guesses were:
1. Spielberg
2. Bigelow
3. Affleck
4. Russell
5. Lee
My only personal preference would be if Tarantino sneaks in at the expense of Russell or Lee. It’s conceivable.
uninformed prediction:
Bigelow
Spielberg
Affleck
Russell
Tarantino
having not seen everything, the most compelling directing i’ve seen this year:
Sarah Polley, Take this Waltz
Joachim Trier, Oslo August 31st
David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook
Leos Carax, Holy Motors
Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom
@ Luis: Nolan will NOT be nominated.
There’s one problem with Chris Nolan getting a nomination for The Dark Knight Rises — The Dark Knight Rises sucks balls. Quite frankly, one of the worst directed movies in recent memory. It’s a special effects extravaganza to be sure, but as far as directing goes, it’s a total mess.
Nolan? For what movie?
Me, too, Paddy. Handling TWO directors in the finals is something I can’t remember coping with before (at least in a very long time).
They love Nolan… They even nominate him for Memento so i think his in… My predictions:
Steven S.
Ben A.
C. Nolan
K. Bigelow
Ang Lee
Alt. R. Jhonston and Leo Carax
My Predictions:
Ben Affleck, Argo
Ang Lee, Life of Pi
Steven Spielberg, Lincoln
Paul Thomas Anderson, The Master
Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty
Oh I know, steve. I so hope Ang Lee gets in. If he and Paul Thomas Anderson get nominated, I’ll jizz my pants.
If you are talking the true achievements in directing this year I don’t see how the list can be anything but Bigelow, Lee, Spielberg, Affleck, and Anderson. Seems simple, so expect a wild card.
I’d switch Tarantino and Lee on those lists. I think PTA could get in a la Malick last year. The Master won’t resonate with the Academy as a whole, but I think the directors might want to recognize his incredible work.
Prediction:
Spielberg (Lincoln)
Affleck (Argo)
Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty)
Tarantino (Django Unchained)
Lee (Life of Pi)
(Absolute worst case scenario – Hooper gets in)
Choice (the REAL artists)
Carax (Holy Motors)
Lee (Life of Pi)
PT Anderson (The Master)
Gomes (Tabu)
Haneke (Amour)
(haven’t seen ZDT, so can’t/won’t add Bigelow)
So basically, my hopes hang on one director – Ang Lee.
Heads up: Empire magazine has posted their Top 20 of 2012. I won’t link you to it. If you want to see it, that’s your business. Amour is at #19. The Avengers is at #1.
Man oh man my opinion keeps changing on this. A few days ago I decided it would be Hooper and Russell that would get in, because I think those might, at the end of the day, be the most well-liked movies. But now I think that would be the wrong choice, especially for the DGA. I’m leaving Hooper off.
I think the craze for “Django” is just beginning. I want to put Tarantino. I want to put Lee. But gosh people also really really love “Silver Linings,” and deservingly.
For now, my predictions:
DGA:
Affleck
Bigelow
Lee
Russell
Spielberg
Oscars:
Affleck
Bigelow
Lee
Spielberg
Tarantino
Bottom line: Russell gets in for DGA over Tarantino. But Tarantino gets in over Russell come Oscar-time, rewarding Russell instead for actors and screenplay nominations. “Django” will do well at Oscars. Absence of nomination for Hooper at Oscar-time will hurt its chances at winning BP.
It’s ridiculous how many people have lost faith in Life of Pi. But there’s always at least one film like that in the mix every year, one which hasn’t ignited any conversation about it potentially winning, one which has had its moment at the box office (although Pi is continuing to rake in strong grosses), one which hasn’t had a last-minute surge, one which isn’t a ‘sexy’ pick – a PG film about a guy finding God on a boat with a tiger called Richard Parker… not a ‘sexy’ pick, no. A great film? Yes. And I’d bet Anne Thompson is right. Life of Pi will probably be very popular with voters.
There’s a mistake in the 2009 list- Lee Daniels wasn’t nominated for a GG, Tarantino was.
Oh dear God, please do not nominate Tom Hooper over Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson or even Joe Wright! The direction and editing in Les Miz is appallingly bad.
In fact, after seeing Anna Karinina I think Wright should have directed Les MIz.
I’m in the directors guild and it should be Bigelow, Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson…and then either Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Affleck, Lee or Haneke. NOT O Russell or Hooper puh-lease!!!
The DGA nominees will be:
Steven Spielberg Lincoln
Ben Affleck Argo
Christopher Nolan TDKR
Kathryn Bigelow ZD30
Ang Lee Lifr of Pi
I just don’t see how Ang Lee wouldn’t be recognized by the Academy. Life of Pi is just phenomenal piece of art. I think he did a better job than Spielberg, who leaned heavily on his incredible line-up of actors.
I really appreciate what Tarantino does, but it is “more of the same” from him. Lee always seems to be trying something new, and succeeding at it.
My five would be:
-Spielberg
-Bigelow
-Lee
-Affleck
-Russell
Now I feel like a tool for not mentioning Mendes and Dominik. And P.T. And Rian Johnson. Which is how it should be, a stacked year with plenty of deserving candidates.
Prediction:
1. Spielberg (winner)
2. Ben Affleck
3. Kathryn Bigelow
4. Ang Lee
5. Tom Hooper
Will probably just predict my Oscar 5

And thanks for the preview and stats.
I love Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire, as well as the Prince of Tide. So, I am glad to see here that DGA’s also recognized Cameron Crowe for both films, and Barbra Streisand for the Prince of Tide, as part of the final list for Best Director category in their respective years.
The real answer is:
Spielberg
Bigelow
Affleck
Russell
Tarantino
In order:
Spielberg
Affleck
Bigelow
The rest is merely filling. Replace Bigelow with Lee if the guild is not willing to deal with the controversy surrounding ZD30.
My DGA prediction (for the contest):
Spielberg
Bigelow
Affleck
(Ang) Lee
Tarantino
Prediction:
Bigelow
Spielberg
Tarantino
Russell
Affleck
My own infinitely valuable opinion:
1. Bigelow
2. Russell
3. Zemeckis
4. Tarantino
5. Joe Wright
