Ang Lee, “I am deeply honored and grateful to the HFPA for these very generous nominations. Making Life of Pi was one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. I am proud of the film we all made and it is wonderful to get this recognition.”
Ben Affleck, “I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for honoring “Argo” with five nominations. These nominations reflect the courage and determination of real life heroes in the US, Canada, Iran and across the globe. They honor more than 120 actors with speaking roles in multiple languages, thousands of extras in the US and abroad as well
as hundreds of extraordinary crew members who poured their heart into the film including the great Alan Arkin, brilliant Chris Terrio and extraordinary Alexandre Desplat, who were nominated today as well and who have my congratulations and gratitude. Thanks again to the HFPA for their support.”
Rachel Weisz, “I am deeply grateful for this nomination, and in particular, for the HFPA’s recognition of the hard work and passion that Terence Davies brought to this wonderful British indie. I am thrilled that this nomination might allow his beautiful work to reach a larger audience.”
Leonardo DiCaprio, “I’m truly honored to be nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association today. Django Unchained was a remarkable experience and I consider myself lucky to work with Quentin and the entire cast on the film. I’m particularly proud to be named alongside my fellow Django nominees.”
Amy Adams, “Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press for this nomination. I’m so appreciative to have been part of Paul Thomas Anderson’s extraordinary film and to have had the opportunity to star alongside such respected actors as Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix who were nothing short of brilliant in their performances.”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “The reason that I do this job is to serve, not to receive accolades and trophies. That said, I’m freakin’ stoked. God bless America and the Hollywood Foreign Press, specifically.”
Alan Arkin, “I am deeply grateful for this honor and particularly moved in being in the company of Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Tommy Lee Jones who I deeply admire. I am also thrilled that Ben is getting the attention he so much deserves, as is “Argo”.”
Lasse Hallstrom, “I am happy as a clam! Many thanks to the HFPA for recognizing our film with these nominations. I loved making this movie, and I am so happy for Ewan and Emily, and on top of being outstanding actors, they are two of the funniest and nicest people in the business, in my mind!”
Ewan McGregor, “Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press for this nomination. It’s wonderful that our movie left its mark. Emily Blunt is such a talent and a joy to work with, and I’m so happy the HFPA recognized her performance, as well as our film. I look forward to the Golden Globes, as they are always fun and send my congratulations to all those who believed and participated in Lasse’s vision.”
Jacques Audiard, “We have been blessed with an impressive reception of the film in the US but this nomination comes as an unexpected honor. I am particularly happy for Marion. When you have shared a moment of pleasure with someone, it is always great to have the opportunity to extend it. This confirms the interest paid in recent years by the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for French cinema. I am very happy to be part of this trend.”
Genndy Tartakovsky, “Seeing the audience reaction was amazing on its own and now this, it’s too much really. Just from everything that’s happened so far i feel like we’re being watched over by some great Animators in the skies and they have shined good fortune upon us. I know it’s a bit dramatic but its awesome!!”
Clive Owen, “I’d like to say a big thank you to The Hollywood Foreign Press. I am really thrilled as this recognition is for a piece of work I’m very proud of and had such a good time on.”
Rich Moore, “Wreck-It Ralph was a labor of love for our entire team at Walt Disney Animation. We are so proud of the hard work that went into making this film, and to see it be recognized with a nomination from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is truly an honor for all of us.”
happy for McGregor & Weisz!
[Yep, I got the two titles the wrong way around in my first sentence.]
Sorry, Jeremy, but for what it’s worth, the HFPA didn’t do any such thing as pick Gandhi over E.T. Quite the opposite, really. Attenborough’a film won in every single category it was nominated in: Best Actor – Drama, Best New Male Star (beating Henry Thomas), Best Direction (beating Spielberg), Best Screenplay (beating Melissa Mathison) and Best Foreign Film (where all non-American productions, English-language or not, were placed at that time). E.T. won only in categories where it didn’t compete with Gandhi (the non-nomination for score was Gandhi’s only weakness there).
Also, for what it’s worth, E.T. is one of top 10 favourite films of all time – and Gandhi is in my top 100.
(Thanks for all the quotes, Sasha.)
Lee’s words are heartfelt. Rachel Weisz’s and Amy Adams’, too.
By the way, I am hoping Ben Affleck, if he likes, will give a serious thought to working full-time in the Directing Department. His directorial CV, while relatively minute, is very impressive.
All the best to the nominees.
Affleck is so eloquent. <3
Apropos of nothing: if Tina Fey and Amy Poehler do a little 2 minute comedy video for the Globes (which they’re hosting as you know) where they’re making Zero Dark 30 and all their colleague men keep telling them to shut up and get them coffee etc, who should play Kathryn Bigelow and who should play Jessica Chastain?
Well actually Salmon Fishing was on the same level as Best Exotic. It’s a quiet and not overly ambitious film with really competent and attractive performances by the four leads. I remember watching this and thinking to myself that the young man who played the army officer would have made a fantasic Vronsky. Emily has had a damn good year with the Five Year, Looper and Salmon Fishing. I can’t wait to see the new Bette Midler Billy Crystal film just to get away from all the self tormented anquished characters littering the screen.
These nominations remind me why I tend to like the GG more than the Oscars. They’re not afraid of being seen having a good time. They don’t have that elitist, pompous, THIS IS ART attitude, that constant quest for “respectability”; their taste actually resemble living, breathing human beings! They picked E.T. over the interminable Gandhi for BP, Brokeback over Crash, The Social Network over The King’s Speech. Tom Hanks won for his greatest role in “Big”, not for playing as a character with a disease or a disability. They’re not afraid of giving Tarantino’s crazy-revenge-western more nominations then the infinitely more “respectable” Les Miserables. Hell, I’m disappointed they looked past Matthew McConaughey for his turn in Magic Mike!
Bring on the GGs, I say!
Tarantino – “Outta my way Hooper!”
Love Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s reaction!
The HFPA really loves Emily Blunt, don’t they?
Only just realized Hooper missed out on a director nod, ouch!!
“D’oh!” – David O. Russell
I can’t wait to read Joaquin’s reaction!.
