The Mad Men snub was inexcusable. There are often bad ideas in these awards noms, but this is unforgivable. Season 5 was fantastic imo.
Now, I have no problem with The Newsroom getting in, I think it’s one of the best couple dramas at the moment (whilst I find Downton Abbey and Homeland to be a waste of time).
Skyfall? I don’t even know what people see in this film. Cinematography? Not for a bond film. I am not a Bond fan, but I have seen them all. What they had in common was lingering shots of locales and mostly, brightly lit. This is the same as any other action films going around. I love Deakins, but this was cut by a dumbass and removed anything he might have added.
Acting? Going through the motions in most cases, with the exception of Javier’s Razzie.
And when is ok to take your clothes off and sneak up on someone in the shower? Not funny, not sexy. Just creepy.
blah
snobs
will wait for Bafta. There at least ppl will give Skyfall what it rightfully deserves! (& what Casino Royale deserved in 2006)
GREAT TO SEE NAOMI WATTS, SHE GAVE THE BEST FEMALE PERFORMARCE OF THE YEAR IN
THE IMPOSSIBLE. A SURE THING TO THE OSCARS. SHE DESERVES SO MUCH THIS NOMINATION.
Beasts of the southern wild is a masterpiece and should be getting nominations.
Bridgie,
No way in Hades will Smith knock Field out of Oscar contention.
Just no.
Oscar sightings, post-Globes:
1. Emmanuelle Riva in, Helen Mirren out (remember Max von Sydow last year?)
2. de Niro in, Waltz out (at least Harvey Weinstein has his two actors
nominated, de Niro and diCaprio specifically)
3. Maggie Smith (…Marigold Hotel) in (Sup. Actress), Kidman and Field out
4. Hooper in, Tarantino out (Best Director)
5. War Witch in, Kon-tiki out (Best Foreign Language Film)
6. Beasts…Southern Wild for Best Orig. Score, tops (no other nods)
7. One Surprise Best Lead and Supporting Performance nomination (the Academy’s
known for this)
8. Arbitrage for Best Orig. Screenplay, tops
9. Joyful Noise in, Skyfall out (Best Orig. Song)
10. Salmon Fishing in… Quartet entirely shut out
I am so glad Wallis did not get in, and I hope she does not score with the Academy. That was not a performance she crafted, it was not great “acting”.
Whoa…”I am sure The Beard (Taylor Swift) is probably real happy that she got nominated and Jim Cameron part 2 didn’t. She’ll probably write a song about it. I just hope she doesn’t win. She is faker than J.Travolta’s lace front.”
Who’s JCII? Song, I think is clearly between Adele and Swift, and you wouldn’t be sad if the other lost. Both songs are great.
Is it just me or have the GG’s made an attempt to be “more respectable” in the last few years? Sure, there’s always at least one or two starfucker nominees (Nicole Kidman for peeing and making a pouty face and Keith Urban for the most random song ever), but overall this list is one I honestly wouldn’t be too mad at if it were the Oscar list. My favorite movie (Beasts Of The Southern Wild) didn’t make the cut anywhere, though. Oh well, its all for the best I guess. This is only Zeitlin’s first film. I don’t want to see him get a big head too early or fall under the weight of huge expectations to deliver a follow up. What he did was absolutely magical and untouched by pressure or the Hollywood system. I’d like another one of those, please.
The Tom Hooper snub hurts the Les Mis buzz a bit but its not too big of a shock if you look harder because the HFPA didn’t like The Kings Speech much. Also, the comparison to NINE getting more nominations than Les Mis is ridiculous. NINE’s nominees included DDL, Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard. No one else from Les Mis, besides those who were nominated, have that kind of star power. It was never going to happen in my opinion.
Oh yeah, might be the Emmys where it was off for eligibility… Well maybe GGs opted for the Aaron Sorkin-pened The Newsroom…
Like I said months and months and months ago… LES MIZ was neverrrrrrrrr going to win Best Picture. It won’t even be considered a top 5 contender. At this point, I think it’s fighting for a top 10 spot at the Oscars and it could very well miss out on that too.
I agree, Mike. Les Mis is down but definitely not out. Crash is a bad comparison to make with Les Mis though. Les Mis has been perceived as a front-runner by many since the first screenings started — Crash never was. People wouldn’t be blind-sided by Les Mis as they would be with Crash; there’s no surprise element behind it. Les Mis is a completely known quantity. In 2005, Crash was the “big cast” production full of known and loved actors and actresses. Les Mis has that too, yes. But there was no movie like Lincoln in 2005, which has to be considered by the Gold Derby and the Gurus as the favorite at this point. Lincoln has the big cast to match wits with Les Mis. It’s group is older and more “Oscar-laden” as well. In 2005, only Brokeback stood in the way of Crash. The critical darling of this year is ZDT, but not quite at that level. Argo is in the mix too but may wind up being like the Goodnight and Good Luck of the bunch. Several noms, no awards.
So yeah, this is a way different beast than 2005 because it’s not Brokeback vs. the world. It’s Lincoln vs. ZDT with several hungry competitors closely following in a far stronger, crowded year. I think for Les Mis to pull of the BP win would be like The Help pulling off the BP win. But we still have a bunch of guild noms and pre-cursors awards to go to see if it really has legs.
BTW, LINCOLN will surpass the $100m box office benchmark today and by weekend will surpass “ARGO” as the biggest box office hit of the nominated films. I am thinking if “Les Miserables” has a “Titanic” like embrace by the public it could very well turn out to be the film to beat. I know box office revenue sometimes isn’t figured in as to who wins but I am just saying….
@Mike
It can. A very short possibility now though. But Crash’s year was totally different. 2005 was a mediocre year for film. In terms of quality and box office saying. In my opinion, the worst year from the last 20 years. It even manages to top 2011. I think the Academy got almost everything wrong that year. I prefer a lot more the GG Drama lineup than the Oscars BP. The Constant Gardner, March Point and A History of Violence are better than Crash, Capote (always thought Joaquin was more deserving… had he won PSH would easily win it now for supporting) and Munich, which I have to re-watch, but I hated that final so hard that it affects directly my conception of the film.
With the exception of Hooper and Russell being left off the director list there isn’t any real or shocking surprises. Once again and from where I sit what these nods tell me is that the Best Picture OSCAR race is now turning into a three way race with CAP as the eventual winner. LINCOLN, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty. Best Actor: DAY-LEWIS and Phoenix. Actress: Chastain and LAWRENCE. Sup Act: Jones and HOFFMAN. Sup Act. HATHAWAY and Fields. Director: Spielberg, AFFLECK, and Bigelow. I reserve the right to make a few changes just in case the OSCAR nods have a few surprises but I rather doubt they will. Yes, I am thinking ARGO is liked a lot more by the hollywood community than what the film critic groups nods and winners seem to say. We shall see.
@Mik
True. 2 writing dramas is very little to what it deserved.
@Sato
It was eligible. Bryan Cranston, who ridiculously never won the GG, was nominated last year but not the show.
For everyone saying “Les Miz” has no chance to win best picture based on the Golden Globes; “Crash” wasn’t nominated for Best Picture OR best Director at the GG’s. Then Paul Haggis was nominated for director and the movie won for Best Picture. Im not saying that this automatically means Les Miz will win best picture and Tom Hooper will be nominated for BD but just another example of how the GG’s are not the absolute best indicator.
@JP
I remember Breaking Bad is off for a season that’s why it wasn’t eligible for a year both GGs and Emmys… If in case it was eligible then hands down it’ll be one of the nominees…
As for Mad Men, season 5 might be it’s weakest season yet but come on, it’s weakest episode could have been The Newsroom’s best… Notable ommision is Elisabeth Moss performances… She might not have most scenes in the season but she definitely make up with it in The Other Woman episode… Oh well, Matt Weiner will have his revenge next year!
Damn with all the SAGs and Globes and shit going down at once I should be paying more attention instead of watching the MAN OF STEEL trailer for the 30th time…
Radich – I dont know where people can possibly get that they had the 5th season from. It was as good as any as far as I’m concerned.
rufussondheim – I read the books too, absolutely adored them too, but the TV series is about as good an adaptation of such a detailed book as you can get.
Yvette – Indeed. Just watch the last scene of the season and you realise that its quality is leagues above anything else out there. Beautifully crafted television.
JP – And of course The Wire rarely ever got a look in to any awards shows.
@Yvette
*lol*
Meryl previously had 26 noms.
The Globes just LOVE her.
Congratz to #27!
Sad that TLJ wasn’t nominated for HS too, but at least he got the predicted nom for Lincoln.
” In what world does Mad Men not get nominated for Best TV Drama and Game of Thrones doesnt get any TV nominations at all? ”
And people complain about the Emmys… There’s no possible comparison in the world between the quality of the shows/actors the Emmy nominates and the shows/actors the Globes/SAG nominates. Last year they snubbed Breaking Bad, which holds, I guess, the highest ever season score on Metacritic. This is year is Mad Men, which is considered by many the greatest show ever. The Emmys have their problems? Yes. They sometimes take too long to recognize some things. They over-award determined shows/actors… but as a whole the quality there is much higher.
If anything pisses me off, it’s the exclusion of Wallis and Riva. Why the hell do you have to still be on your mensies just to get a Best Actress nomination? (Helen Mirren is still more fertile than a rain forest; why do you think she keeps surprising us? She could have become pregnant any time in the last 50 years; she just didn’t feel like it.)
Nice to know that, thanks for the trivia!
Anyway, I think what phantom’s giving us are more of theories rather than actual possibilities… Because after all, these nominations from the critics’ groups, SAG, GGs and BAFTAs help us see the bigger picture of the race…
Nice to know that, thanks for the trivia!
Anyway, I think these “indications” from the critics’ choices to SAG to GGs and BAFTAs are more of theories rather than actual possibilities… Because after all, these nominations make us see the bigger picture of the race…
No, I didn’t even think about the fact the The Piano and ZDT are both by women directors.
Is The Paperboy based on Kim Kuntrashian’s boinking tape? I have never seen it but I believe it was Ryan Adams that stated that there was a golden shower scene. Was her “film” deemed ineligible for awards consideration? Probably just an AVN, Kids Choice, MTV Movie Award, and a Razzie.
I simply do not see many Academy members leaving off Phoenix in their lists of top five male performances. I can see leaving off Washington or Hawkes or Cooper. But not Phoenix.
Not a single nomination for The Perks of Being a Wallflower is upsetting. Hopefully with the categories separate at the Oscars it can get a Screenplay nomination.
Otherwise these are pretty good. Disappointed to see Ann Dowd didn’t get in.
Fillipe – Phantom knows it’s not a report card. The stats are more like weather vanes. Yes, every year will produce exceptions and we will celebrate those – note my alias? – but if you BET on all noms in all categories and go with phantom’s stats vs your gut, the stats will win money.
I strongly disagree with anyone (many on this site) who think John Hawkes is a lock over Phoenix. The academy WILL nominate Joaquin Phoenix, mark my words. They like him too much and this may be his best performance, and they will deem his role as the most nomination-worthy aspect of The Master. I think Phoenix is more likely than Washington, Jackman, and Hawkes, but ultimately I think Hawkes will get bumped. His performance is impressive, but not on the scale of the others.
Filipe
(what I said to Zooey)
Some big surprises in the list – no Tom Hooper for Best Director of LES MISERABLES, which was also snubbed in the Best Screenplay category. I think this is the point at which LES MISERABLES has lost the Best Picture race at the Oscars. Three nominations for SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN – and here was me thinking I was the only person who liked it. Thrilled that Helen Mirren is up for HITCHCOCK and an Oscar nomination is looking increasingly likely.
mecid, Radich, Tero , thanks !
Sato
Naomi Watts is a British-born Australian, she once said “I consider myself British and have very happy memories of the UK. I spent the first 14 years of my life in England and Wales and never wanted to leave. When I was in Australia I went back to England a lot.” , plus she has been getting some good press in the UK recently, she was shooting DIANA there, playing one of their most beloved icons, so she will probably get a slice of that British-vote, question is how big of a slice ?
danemychal
Yes, I’m expecting that lineup with one or two unexpected 5th places. Christophe is right, the Academy does what the Academy wants, they prove it every year, last year is a good example : DiCaprio had the SAG-GG-BFCA trio, Swinton had the usually ironclad SAG-BAFTA-GG-BFCA quartet and the Academy went for Gary Oldman who ‘only’ had a Bafta nomination and Rooney Mara who only had a Golden Globe nomination. Long story short, I think there will be at least one or two surprises in the acting categories when all is said and done. For now, my money is on someone from this list : Ewan McGregor (The Impossible), Keira Knightley & Jude Law (Anna Karenina), Jamie Foxx & Kerry Washington (Django Unchained), Samantha Barks & Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables), Michael Caine (The Dark Knight Rises), Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi), Ben Affleck (Argo), Anthony Hopkins (Hitchcock), Pauline Collins (Quartet)
OR
it could be someone whose inclusion will be just as surprising due to being snubbed by SAG and/or HFPA, but since they made the cut SOMEWHERE during the season, on paper they should have been considered more seriously than we probably will in the next few weeks : Emmanuelle Riva (Amour), Rachel Weisz (The Deep Blue Sea), Maggie Smith (Quartet), Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Richard Gere (Arbitrage), Bill Murray (Hyde Park on Hudson), Jack Black (Bernie), Judi Dench (Skyfall), Ann Dowd (Compliance), Leonardo DiCaprio & Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained), Matthew McConaughey (Magic Mike).
I guess our clue will be if any of the underestimated contenders from either of the two lists, receives a Bafta nomination (January 9) the day before the Oscar nominations (January 10). If that happens, then next day’s ‘shocker’ shouldn’t shock us THAT much. The overlapping Bafta/Oscar voters tend to surprise (Javier Bardem for Biutiful, Gary Oldman for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Tilda Swinton’s Oscar victory etc.). I think the most likely to ‘shock’ is someone from the McGregor-Knightley-Barks-Redmayne quartet, the most likely to ‘surprise’ is clearly SAG/GG snubinee Emmanuelle Riva .
And just to offer a completely britishvotebafta-free conspiracy theory, the Academy could just pull a ‘Million Dollar Baby’ and nominate a completely underestimated lead actor whose film they REALLY love (Argo’s Affleck, Pi’s Sharma, Django’s Foxx) .
Zooey
I love the numbers-approach because it is usually backed up by results. Sure, there are exceptions, I’m fully aware of the ones you listed, but I think focusing on the ONE contender per category that is the exception isn’t very productive, precedent usually backs up around 4 Oscar nominees per category. For example the SAG-BAFTA-GG-BFCA quartet though does NOT guarantee an Oscar nomination, I don’t think there are more than 3-5 contenders in the last 10 years (200 acting nominations) that didn’t go all the way to the Oscar top5 with the quartet under their belt. I’m not saying the Academy votes for someone because for example the BFCA did, I’m saying a BFCA-nod (or any other precursor nod/win) might pique the Academy’s interest in a contender they haven’t been fully aware of before.
Christophe – I know, ’twas an attempt at humor
Tero – love it when you bring it back to 1993 – our favorite year. ZDT = piano, ha! Cause it’s a woman directing a woman that no one listens to? Anyway I see ZDT out-performing piano. This cage-match has barely started…
Excellent point about HUGO Christophe!
@Kasper
Yes. That’s the reason why she has all these lines. She’s sort of the wind beneath the wings of Hitchcock it’s a very showy performance… Don’t get me wrong, she’s a force to be reckon with in the movie, I just find it safe compared to Knightley, Riva and Wallis performances… Nothing special, same as Washington in ‘Flight’ where I would rather see Hopkins than him in Lead Actor list…
@unlikely hood
Nicolas Sarkozy is no longer president, sigh 🙁 but he can still invite Harvey for a weekend at his wife’s beach mansion on the French Riviera next time he comes to Cannes!
Go Django! I knew it was gonna be it’s coming out party!
….AAAND best director is still the hottest action, but it’s now a 7-person race, welcome Quentin!
Sorry but PT Anderson is out of it. The BAS trio is locked. Hooper Lee Russell and QT are fighting for 2 positions. If Russell and QT get them, Harvey Weinstein gets a second Legionnaire Medal from Nicolas Sarkozy – just because.
Phantom, it’s not a report card. I don’t think Academy voters will think: “Well, I liked this movie, but there’s no way I’m voting for it because it has a 60 metascore/didn’t have a Golden Globe nom”.
Reviews, awards and nominations are good because of FYC ads, because the movie can be more seen. These things, SAG, Golden Globe are just INDICATIONS of what is on the industry’s mind, and not what films “NEED” to go all the way to the Oscars.
Every year a “rule” is broken, and that’s only because some people, like you, make up these rules. Chill out, man.
Ps: sorry for my English, I’m Brazilian.
Sasha wrote that Lincoln had Spielberg films’ best scores at SAG (4), GG (7) and BFCA (13). In order to get the record at the Oscars it would need 13 nods (Schindler’s List had 12).
If it got 13 (the same as Schindler’s List but with three actors instead of two), I think Lincoln would win some 9 Oscars.
I’m basing this with 1993. A VERY strong year, like this one. Voters get confused and want to be on the winner’s side (only human) and in this case Lincoln sounds like a winner. It would also mean that its biggest candidate ZDT would win some major awards, too. Chastain for Actress and Editing quickly come to mind.
The difference would be that Schindler’s List won 7 without either of the two actors. Was it because they were first-timers? Well, this time they’d be previous (multiple even) winners.
1993 was so strong that they were lost during the nomination process, too. How else can you explain The Fugitive? ZDT could be this year’s The Piano, sort of.
@Sato: Actually, Helen Mirren has the bigger arc in the movie. Her role as the “wife of Hitchcock” WAS equally the dramatic tension in the movie as the making of Psycho was. She gets the big speech, she gets the big ‘saves the day’ moment. I don’t like the movie, but it would be unfair to say Mirren’s role was just “the wife of Hitchcock.”
@kasper
Beat that ass, Miss Thing! He’s still bitter Pinnochio lost the election.
Anyone who guessed Salmon Fishing in any of the categories deserve to win something. That would’ve been a great NGNG.
Also @PaulH… maybe someone should break it down for you. Say you were in the Navy SEAL team that captured the #1 most wanted dangerous terrorist, who has minions all over the world. Would you go bragging on Good Morning America revealing who you are.. putting yourself and your family in danger…your whole life. Maybe, just maybe, that’s why you haven’t heard of a “Maya” before.
PaulH, The Hobbit is an awful film. That’s why. Reviews are bad, as they should be. I gave it 2/5 (all LOTR films were 5/5).
@ phantom,
I’ve never understood your approach by the numbers. Last year is last year. Last year The Tree of Life made it despite of little precursors’ support, Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close made it with nearly zero support and some awful reviews. Rooney Mara made it into the final five with a GG nod only (no SAG, no BFCA, no BAFTA!) and Tilda Swinton failed after having all the precursors she needed and some critics. Of course in the last few years the GG-SAG-BFCA failed to get nods for Angelina Jolie, Emile Hirsch, Ryan Gosling (all three in a SINGLE year!). That same year SAG and Critics’ Choice nominee Catherine Keener was ignored. And that year Tommy Lee Jones made it into the final five with the support of NO major group, Depp made it with the Globes AND the Critics’ Choice (but NO SAG). Ronan made it with the Globes and the BAFTA’s. Linney made it after being snubbed by every group.
So why should this year be like last year? It could be like 2007. Or like 2010, where Jacki Weaver and Michelle Williams made it without the SAG. They had GG and BFCA, but no SAG. So actually your approach by the numbers is wrong because if you approached last year’s predictions like the year before (2010), then you had Fassbender and Brooks nominated, given that Weaver and Williams were. So have you predicted that, you would have been wrong. You can’t judge by the numbers.
There’s plenty of time actually. We could see many surprises. I predict Riva to make it despite of the snub. And I predict DeNiro to fail. Historically, not just last year, DeNiro is in a bad position. But I think that he’ll suffer mostly from the lack of number 1 votes.
I believe we’ll have surprises. It started like a boring year, but it’s getting crazy!!!!!!
Nicky Kidman and her hubby both received nominations, I just noticed that.
I am sure The Beard (Taylor Swift) is probably real happy that she got nominated and Jim Cameron part 2 didn’t. She’ll probably write a song about it. I just hope she doesn’t win. She is faker than J.Travolta’s lace front.
Lots to comment about GG noms, mas all have been said before. I just have to say I don’t get those people who say Marion Cotillard is a overrated actress who’s always in contention, who’s always nominated and bla bla bla… look, after her Oscar Welldeserved Winning, the got very much snubbed when she should have been nominated as Supporting actress for Public Enemies or Nine (2009), Inception (2010) and Midnight in Paris (2011).
For those few fans out there rooting for The Hobbit; every LOTR film got a mention at the 2001, 2002 and 2003 Globes. No noms this morning does not bode well.

@Sam Juliano
Last year, Hugo was buried in the crowd at the Globes with only 3 noms (The Artist had 5), yet it was the most nominated films at the oscars and won as many as The Artist (though not the biggest prizes).
“Was Helen Mirren really that great in Hitchcock? Maybe I should see that movie afterall.”
-NO. Not hating her but the only reason she had screen time is because she plays the wife of Hitchcock. It’s a shame that she’s getting the awards limelight from Hopkins…
Haven’t seen The Impossible but isn’t Watts Australian? BAFTA better resurrect Knightley and Riva or Wallis…
Really glad of where Kidman’s campaign has gone from zero to GG/SAG combo. Hope she could make it in the Oscars! Guess phone calls from France shoot pays off?
Guess we’ll be seeing the same people again in a different movie next month!
And why the hell the Salmon is Fishing in Yemen? Doesn’t make sense! Would rather have Pitch Perfect…
I was disappointed to see Hooper snubbed, and though Phantom’s analysis was focused and exceptionally persuasive, I never bought the idea that the Globes would be especially attracted to LES MIS in the first place. It received the noms it needed to: Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress. It never was in the running for screenplay, and never had a chance at same award at the Oscars.
I say Hooper will still land a Best Director nod from the Academy, and the film will still score quite well.
Yes I have not seen the film (but did see the Broadway show three times) but neither have the LES MIS nay-sayers, who are converging like bees on honey. 4 GG noms was enough, methinks.
The only one that gets a pass here is my dear friend Pierre de Plume!!! He’s the best!!!
Ha!!!
Funnily enough, I just watched Salmon Fishing minutes before the GG nominations. Had had that blu-ray for weeks and never found the time to watch it. I know now why. It was not very good. Gonna throw a seagull in the head with it.
“I mean, whoever heard of “Maya” in any talk about the search for Bin Laden in the first place?”
isn’t that the whole point? if she is any good at her job, we’ll never know who she is =P
but the true horror for me is NO MAD MEN FOR DRAMA SERIES. or did I accidentally miss it?
Snubs for big stars like McConaughey, Bardem, Maggie Smith for Marigold, Hopkins, and even De Niro give easier precedent for them being snubbed by Oscar, regardless of SAG or BAFTA choices. Also not good for Les Mis/Tom Hooper. The film only got the expected nominations minus Hooper. No Barks, Redmayne, Crowe, or anyone else from the film.
Watts and Mirren are looking good. Wallis and Riva – do they have enough of parts to get in? Will the Academy love their films? Mirren in particular feels like filler, but everyone said her performance was the best part of the film.
I had to Google SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN. Well, this is better than a starfucker nod for Tom Cruise in Rock of Ages, not that he rates so highly anymore, or probably Barbra Streisand in The Guilt Trip.
The Globes love Nicole Kidman. They like Maggie Smith, but could have liked her more. (They know she won’t show, though.) They may have liked the cast of The Impossible enough to nominate Ewan McGregor for his comedy. I’m sure they really, really like Sally Field. Tommy Lee Jones, not as much.
What does bootystanks mean? Sounds negative… plus booty.
I was being facetious, bootystanks! Sheesh! Lighten up, but I can tell from your pic that you have no sense of irony.
“…Kat Bigelow win again, because it do take balls and nerve to direct 2 war films in a row and have them be successful.”
PaulH will reply you shortly.
“How many has Spielberg directed? Like 30 war movies, his most recent success was Saving Private Ryan.”
30 war movies? His total is about 30 and they are not all war movies. Not even close.
Phantom, you genius. There’s nothing much to add after your analysis…
As much as I love Nicole (and I do!) I still don’t think she’s in good standing for Oscar. Though she’s a previous Oscar winner and multiple nominee, I can see her go the way of Mila Kunis and Cameron Diaz who were both SAG and GG nominated – to be Oscar snubbed. Obviously, Kidman’s a much greater actress than them. Perhaps I’m just keeping my expectations downplayed cause nothing would please be more than seeing her get another Oscar nod for this daring performance. Perhaps Oscar likes his women more daring than his men (Fassbender). Hopefully. I would actually love if the GG supporting actress category translated to Oscar.
This from Queerty: “Jones’ Hope Springs co-star Meryl Streep, who can score a nomination just for heavily sighing on screen, is nominated for her 303rd Globe.”
lol….Poor Meryl – she is so aware of this perception and often seems embarrassed.
Only one person has ever gotten up at the mic and recognized those performances that get ignored: Meryl Streep! she did it last year, also when she won for Julie and Julia, and when she won for the Devil Wears Prada.
Wednesday 9 January – BAFTA Nominations Announced
when are the BAFTA longlists announced?
JJ I agree. Leslie Mann is a horrendous mess and she keeps getting casted because she’s boinking the director. I hope the skank doesn’t think that her collaboration with Apatow is like Leo and Marty or Quentin and Uma or Wars and Spielberg.
Thx Phantom for the very interesting stats but I think you forgot smth major: Leo Dicaprio was nominated at cca, sag and gg for J. edgar but snubbed at the oscars. on the other hand gary oldman started his awards season at the baftas and rode the wave to the oscars so the race is still wide open for the last slots…
As much as we’d like to believe such or such are locks, the Oscars are UNPREDICTABLE.
THE ACADEMY DOES WHAT THE ACADEMY WANTS. Their picks might agree with the precursor awards but they do not in any way let themselves be influenced by any of them.
Very good stats, Phantom. So I’m guessing your list would look like this, right?
Actor:
Day-Lewis
Jackman
Hawkes
Washington
Cooper
Actress:
Chastain
Lawrence
Mirren
Cotillard
Watts
Supp Actor:
Arkin
Hoffman
Bardem
DeNiro
Jones
Supp Actress:
Hathaway
Field
Hunt
Kidman
M. Smith
No Mad Men for a brilliant 5th season….I agree with Radich, Mad Men is so above the rest of television that even a lukewarm year (and the 5th season was NOT) is superior to anything else on tv…
Mcconaughey was squeezed out again and Arkin gets in. Ok.
And Mirren and Streep – love these ladies, but no. Hope Springs was a vacation for Meryl.
Anyone could have played that role. I bet Meryl is thinking, ‘Oh God, people hate me now’
Jack Black was brilliant in Bernie but doesn’t have a chance this year at the Oscars because of the bigger name competition.
Ehh, does anyone take the Globes seriously. It might be unwarranted, but I haven’t since the Pia Zadora fiasco. This was always like the tacky cousin to Oscar.
AD
I was very disappointed about the Knightley-snub, too. Now her only hope is the mysterious British-vote…but even if there is such a thing, it could simply favor others in her category : Helen Mirren, Rachel Weisz, Maggie Smith, Naomi Watts.
The one tiny thing that might help her out, is the fact that the Academy loved the previous Wright/Knightley films considerably MORE than other organizations : Pride & Prejudice pulled off 4 Oscar nominations including Best Actress, although she didn’t receive either a SAG or a Bafta nomination; and then Atonement received 7 nominations including picture, screenplay, supporting actress without a single nod from the crucial PGA/DGA/WGA/SAG quartet.
HOW THE FUCK DID PARANORMAN GET SNUBBED?
No love for the Apatow – that’s a surprise. Guess it’s not that great a comedy.
Salmon Fishing the Yemen? Some weirdo on the board is probably from the Yemen. Or Sony bought the nominations ala The Tourist and Burlesque.
Unfortunately, what did in The Hunger Games, The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises is that they were too mainstream for SAG or the Globes. If they had collectively made Salmon Fishing in the frakkin’ Yemen-esque $, they’d have had more of a chance.
If Django scores BP/BD/Original or Adapted Screenplay? oscar noms, they cannot ignore Q again. The Academy has to award him the director or screenplay oscar. His movies are crowd pleasers and critic darlings. How many more times has Zemekis been nominated after he won? 0! I think.
I do want to see my Ho Kat Bigelow win again, because it do take balls and nerve to direct 2 war films in a row and have them be succesful. How many has Spielberg directed? Like 30 war movies, his most recent success was Saving Private Ryan.
In what world does Mad Men not get nominated for Best TV Drama and Game of Thrones doesnt get any TV nominations at all?
Maybe because they read the book and think the show is terrible in comparison.
I really don’tthink Lincoln has this locked up by any means, I still consider ZDT to be the frontrunner.
Yes, I think the actors branch is large and there are some great performances in Lincoln that help it get those extra nods. But don’t forget, many in the acting branch have strong ties to NY and with the relevance and timeliness and better critics reviews, I think ZDT still has the edge.
I’m not 100% sure on Django Unchained’s chances (the Globes can be controversial…), also, unless Les Mis scores big at the BAFTA (and that is quite possible), Hooper and his movie are dead.
@ phantom
I love reading your very informative posts. Thanks.
Sweeney Todd was great. I liked all the characters, even the really bad ones.

GREAT LIST!!!! Hooray for “Django” and “Life of PI”!!! Tarantino and Ange Lee > Tom Hooper.
Very happy for DiCaprio and Waltz!!! (But I still don’t really understand why Alan Arkin is a contender, as much as I like him.)
Some interesting data :
Last year there were
– 5 (Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Ryan Gosling, Shailene Woodley, Albert Brooks) acting contenders who failed to receive a SAG-nod but pulled off the GG/BFCA combo. None of them made the cut at the Oscars. This does not bode well for JOAQUIN PHOENIX and AMY ADAMS.
– 3 (Glenn Close, Janet McTeer, Jonah Hill) acting contenders who failed to receive a BFCA-nod but delivered the SAG/GG combo. All three received Oscar nominations. That’s definitely promising news for HELEN MIRREN and NICOLE KIDMAN.
– 2 (Melissa McCarthy, Nick Nolte) received SAG/BFCA nominations but no Golden Globe. Both made the Oscar-cut. So, hello JAVIER BARDEM and ROBERT DE NIRO !
