The Mad Men snub was inexcusable. There are often bad ideas in these awards noms, but this is unforgivable. Season 5 was fantastic imo.
Now, I have no problem with The Newsroom getting in, I think it’s one of the best couple dramas at the moment (whilst I find Downton Abbey and Homeland to be a waste of time).
Skyfall? I don’t even know what people see in this film. Cinematography? Not for a bond film. I am not a Bond fan, but I have seen them all. What they had in common was lingering shots of locales and mostly, brightly lit. This is the same as any other action films going around. I love Deakins, but this was cut by a dumbass and removed anything he might have added.
Acting? Going through the motions in most cases, with the exception of Javier’s Razzie.
And when is ok to take your clothes off and sneak up on someone in the shower? Not funny, not sexy. Just creepy.
blah
snobs
will wait for Bafta. There at least ppl will give Skyfall what it rightfully deserves! (& what Casino Royale deserved in 2006)
GREAT TO SEE NAOMI WATTS, SHE GAVE THE BEST FEMALE PERFORMARCE OF THE YEAR IN
THE IMPOSSIBLE. A SURE THING TO THE OSCARS. SHE DESERVES SO MUCH THIS NOMINATION.
Beasts of the southern wild is a masterpiece and should be getting nominations.
Bridgie,
No way in Hades will Smith knock Field out of Oscar contention.
Just no.
Oscar sightings, post-Globes:
1. Emmanuelle Riva in, Helen Mirren out (remember Max von Sydow last year?)
2. de Niro in, Waltz out (at least Harvey Weinstein has his two actors
nominated, de Niro and diCaprio specifically)
3. Maggie Smith (…Marigold Hotel) in (Sup. Actress), Kidman and Field out
4. Hooper in, Tarantino out (Best Director)
5. War Witch in, Kon-tiki out (Best Foreign Language Film)
6. Beasts…Southern Wild for Best Orig. Score, tops (no other nods)
7. One Surprise Best Lead and Supporting Performance nomination (the Academy’s
known for this)
8. Arbitrage for Best Orig. Screenplay, tops
9. Joyful Noise in, Skyfall out (Best Orig. Song)
10. Salmon Fishing in… Quartet entirely shut out
I am so glad Wallis did not get in, and I hope she does not score with the Academy. That was not a performance she crafted, it was not great “acting”.
Whoa…”I am sure The Beard (Taylor Swift) is probably real happy that she got nominated and Jim Cameron part 2 didn’t. She’ll probably write a song about it. I just hope she doesn’t win. She is faker than J.Travolta’s lace front.”
Who’s JCII? Song, I think is clearly between Adele and Swift, and you wouldn’t be sad if the other lost. Both songs are great.
Is it just me or have the GG’s made an attempt to be “more respectable” in the last few years? Sure, there’s always at least one or two starfucker nominees (Nicole Kidman for peeing and making a pouty face and Keith Urban for the most random song ever), but overall this list is one I honestly wouldn’t be too mad at if it were the Oscar list. My favorite movie (Beasts Of The Southern Wild) didn’t make the cut anywhere, though. Oh well, its all for the best I guess. This is only Zeitlin’s first film. I don’t want to see him get a big head too early or fall under the weight of huge expectations to deliver a follow up. What he did was absolutely magical and untouched by pressure or the Hollywood system. I’d like another one of those, please.
The Tom Hooper snub hurts the Les Mis buzz a bit but its not too big of a shock if you look harder because the HFPA didn’t like The Kings Speech much. Also, the comparison to NINE getting more nominations than Les Mis is ridiculous. NINE’s nominees included DDL, Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard. No one else from Les Mis, besides those who were nominated, have that kind of star power. It was never going to happen in my opinion.
Oh yeah, might be the Emmys where it was off for eligibility… Well maybe GGs opted for the Aaron Sorkin-pened The Newsroom…
Like I said months and months and months ago… LES MIZ was neverrrrrrrrr going to win Best Picture. It won’t even be considered a top 5 contender. At this point, I think it’s fighting for a top 10 spot at the Oscars and it could very well miss out on that too.
I agree, Mike. Les Mis is down but definitely not out. Crash is a bad comparison to make with Les Mis though. Les Mis has been perceived as a front-runner by many since the first screenings started — Crash never was. People wouldn’t be blind-sided by Les Mis as they would be with Crash; there’s no surprise element behind it. Les Mis is a completely known quantity. In 2005, Crash was the “big cast” production full of known and loved actors and actresses. Les Mis has that too, yes. But there was no movie like Lincoln in 2005, which has to be considered by the Gold Derby and the Gurus as the favorite at this point. Lincoln has the big cast to match wits with Les Mis. It’s group is older and more “Oscar-laden” as well. In 2005, only Brokeback stood in the way of Crash. The critical darling of this year is ZDT, but not quite at that level. Argo is in the mix too but may wind up being like the Goodnight and Good Luck of the bunch. Several noms, no awards.
So yeah, this is a way different beast than 2005 because it’s not Brokeback vs. the world. It’s Lincoln vs. ZDT with several hungry competitors closely following in a far stronger, crowded year. I think for Les Mis to pull of the BP win would be like The Help pulling off the BP win. But we still have a bunch of guild noms and pre-cursors awards to go to see if it really has legs.
BTW, LINCOLN will surpass the $100m box office benchmark today and by weekend will surpass “ARGO” as the biggest box office hit of the nominated films. I am thinking if “Les Miserables” has a “Titanic” like embrace by the public it could very well turn out to be the film to beat. I know box office revenue sometimes isn’t figured in as to who wins but I am just saying….
@Mike
It can. A very short possibility now though. But Crash’s year was totally different. 2005 was a mediocre year for film. In terms of quality and box office saying. In my opinion, the worst year from the last 20 years. It even manages to top 2011. I think the Academy got almost everything wrong that year. I prefer a lot more the GG Drama lineup than the Oscars BP. The Constant Gardner, March Point and A History of Violence are better than Crash, Capote (always thought Joaquin was more deserving… had he won PSH would easily win it now for supporting) and Munich, which I have to re-watch, but I hated that final so hard that it affects directly my conception of the film.
With the exception of Hooper and Russell being left off the director list there isn’t any real or shocking surprises. Once again and from where I sit what these nods tell me is that the Best Picture OSCAR race is now turning into a three way race with CAP as the eventual winner. LINCOLN, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty. Best Actor: DAY-LEWIS and Phoenix. Actress: Chastain and LAWRENCE. Sup Act: Jones and HOFFMAN. Sup Act. HATHAWAY and Fields. Director: Spielberg, AFFLECK, and Bigelow. I reserve the right to make a few changes just in case the OSCAR nods have a few surprises but I rather doubt they will. Yes, I am thinking ARGO is liked a lot more by the hollywood community than what the film critic groups nods and winners seem to say. We shall see.
@Mik
True. 2 writing dramas is very little to what it deserved.
@Sato
It was eligible. Bryan Cranston, who ridiculously never won the GG, was nominated last year but not the show.
For everyone saying “Les Miz” has no chance to win best picture based on the Golden Globes; “Crash” wasn’t nominated for Best Picture OR best Director at the GG’s. Then Paul Haggis was nominated for director and the movie won for Best Picture. Im not saying that this automatically means Les Miz will win best picture and Tom Hooper will be nominated for BD but just another example of how the GG’s are not the absolute best indicator.
@JP
I remember Breaking Bad is off for a season that’s why it wasn’t eligible for a year both GGs and Emmys… If in case it was eligible then hands down it’ll be one of the nominees…
As for Mad Men, season 5 might be it’s weakest season yet but come on, it’s weakest episode could have been The Newsroom’s best… Notable ommision is Elisabeth Moss performances… She might not have most scenes in the season but she definitely make up with it in The Other Woman episode… Oh well, Matt Weiner will have his revenge next year!
Damn with all the SAGs and Globes and shit going down at once I should be paying more attention instead of watching the MAN OF STEEL trailer for the 30th time…
Radich – I dont know where people can possibly get that they had the 5th season from. It was as good as any as far as I’m concerned.
rufussondheim – I read the books too, absolutely adored them too, but the TV series is about as good an adaptation of such a detailed book as you can get.
Yvette – Indeed. Just watch the last scene of the season and you realise that its quality is leagues above anything else out there. Beautifully crafted television.
JP – And of course The Wire rarely ever got a look in to any awards shows.
@Yvette
*lol*
Meryl previously had 26 noms.
The Globes just LOVE her.
Congratz to #27!
Sad that TLJ wasn’t nominated for HS too, but at least he got the predicted nom for Lincoln.
” In what world does Mad Men not get nominated for Best TV Drama and Game of Thrones doesnt get any TV nominations at all? ”
And people complain about the Emmys… There’s no possible comparison in the world between the quality of the shows/actors the Emmy nominates and the shows/actors the Globes/SAG nominates. Last year they snubbed Breaking Bad, which holds, I guess, the highest ever season score on Metacritic. This is year is Mad Men, which is considered by many the greatest show ever. The Emmys have their problems? Yes. They sometimes take too long to recognize some things. They over-award determined shows/actors… but as a whole the quality there is much higher.
If anything pisses me off, it’s the exclusion of Wallis and Riva. Why the hell do you have to still be on your mensies just to get a Best Actress nomination? (Helen Mirren is still more fertile than a rain forest; why do you think she keeps surprising us? She could have become pregnant any time in the last 50 years; she just didn’t feel like it.)
Nice to know that, thanks for the trivia!
Anyway, I think what phantom’s giving us are more of theories rather than actual possibilities… Because after all, these nominations from the critics’ groups, SAG, GGs and BAFTAs help us see the bigger picture of the race…
Nice to know that, thanks for the trivia!
Anyway, I think these “indications” from the critics’ choices to SAG to GGs and BAFTAs are more of theories rather than actual possibilities… Because after all, these nominations make us see the bigger picture of the race…
No, I didn’t even think about the fact the The Piano and ZDT are both by women directors.
Is The Paperboy based on Kim Kuntrashian’s boinking tape? I have never seen it but I believe it was Ryan Adams that stated that there was a golden shower scene. Was her “film” deemed ineligible for awards consideration? Probably just an AVN, Kids Choice, MTV Movie Award, and a Razzie.
I simply do not see many Academy members leaving off Phoenix in their lists of top five male performances. I can see leaving off Washington or Hawkes or Cooper. But not Phoenix.
Not a single nomination for The Perks of Being a Wallflower is upsetting. Hopefully with the categories separate at the Oscars it can get a Screenplay nomination.
Otherwise these are pretty good. Disappointed to see Ann Dowd didn’t get in.
Fillipe – Phantom knows it’s not a report card. The stats are more like weather vanes. Yes, every year will produce exceptions and we will celebrate those – note my alias? – but if you BET on all noms in all categories and go with phantom’s stats vs your gut, the stats will win money.
I strongly disagree with anyone (many on this site) who think John Hawkes is a lock over Phoenix. The academy WILL nominate Joaquin Phoenix, mark my words. They like him too much and this may be his best performance, and they will deem his role as the most nomination-worthy aspect of The Master. I think Phoenix is more likely than Washington, Jackman, and Hawkes, but ultimately I think Hawkes will get bumped. His performance is impressive, but not on the scale of the others.
Filipe
(what I said to Zooey)
Some big surprises in the list – no Tom Hooper for Best Director of LES MISERABLES, which was also snubbed in the Best Screenplay category. I think this is the point at which LES MISERABLES has lost the Best Picture race at the Oscars. Three nominations for SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN – and here was me thinking I was the only person who liked it. Thrilled that Helen Mirren is up for HITCHCOCK and an Oscar nomination is looking increasingly likely.
mecid, Radich, Tero , thanks !
Sato
Naomi Watts is a British-born Australian, she once said “I consider myself British and have very happy memories of the UK. I spent the first 14 years of my life in England and Wales and never wanted to leave. When I was in Australia I went back to England a lot.” , plus she has been getting some good press in the UK recently, she was shooting DIANA there, playing one of their most beloved icons, so she will probably get a slice of that British-vote, question is how big of a slice ?
danemychal
Yes, I’m expecting that lineup with one or two unexpected 5th places. Christophe is right, the Academy does what the Academy wants, they prove it every year, last year is a good example : DiCaprio had the SAG-GG-BFCA trio, Swinton had the usually ironclad SAG-BAFTA-GG-BFCA quartet and the Academy went for Gary Oldman who ‘only’ had a Bafta nomination and Rooney Mara who only had a Golden Globe nomination. Long story short, I think there will be at least one or two surprises in the acting categories when all is said and done. For now, my money is on someone from this list : Ewan McGregor (The Impossible), Keira Knightley & Jude Law (Anna Karenina), Jamie Foxx & Kerry Washington (Django Unchained), Samantha Barks & Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables), Michael Caine (The Dark Knight Rises), Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi), Ben Affleck (Argo), Anthony Hopkins (Hitchcock), Pauline Collins (Quartet)
OR
it could be someone whose inclusion will be just as surprising due to being snubbed by SAG and/or HFPA, but since they made the cut SOMEWHERE during the season, on paper they should have been considered more seriously than we probably will in the next few weeks : Emmanuelle Riva (Amour), Rachel Weisz (The Deep Blue Sea), Maggie Smith (Quartet), Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Richard Gere (Arbitrage), Bill Murray (Hyde Park on Hudson), Jack Black (Bernie), Judi Dench (Skyfall), Ann Dowd (Compliance), Leonardo DiCaprio & Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained), Matthew McConaughey (Magic Mike).
I guess our clue will be if any of the underestimated contenders from either of the two lists, receives a Bafta nomination (January 9) the day before the Oscar nominations (January 10). If that happens, then next day’s ‘shocker’ shouldn’t shock us THAT much. The overlapping Bafta/Oscar voters tend to surprise (Javier Bardem for Biutiful, Gary Oldman for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Tilda Swinton’s Oscar victory etc.). I think the most likely to ‘shock’ is someone from the McGregor-Knightley-Barks-Redmayne quartet, the most likely to ‘surprise’ is clearly SAG/GG snubinee Emmanuelle Riva .
And just to offer a completely britishvotebafta-free conspiracy theory, the Academy could just pull a ‘Million Dollar Baby’ and nominate a completely underestimated lead actor whose film they REALLY love (Argo’s Affleck, Pi’s Sharma, Django’s Foxx) .
Zooey
I love the numbers-approach because it is usually backed up by results. Sure, there are exceptions, I’m fully aware of the ones you listed, but I think focusing on the ONE contender per category that is the exception isn’t very productive, precedent usually backs up around 4 Oscar nominees per category. For example the SAG-BAFTA-GG-BFCA quartet though does NOT guarantee an Oscar nomination, I don’t think there are more than 3-5 contenders in the last 10 years (200 acting nominations) that didn’t go all the way to the Oscar top5 with the quartet under their belt. I’m not saying the Academy votes for someone because for example the BFCA did, I’m saying a BFCA-nod (or any other precursor nod/win) might pique the Academy’s interest in a contender they haven’t been fully aware of before.
Christophe – I know, ’twas an attempt at humor
Tero – love it when you bring it back to 1993 – our favorite year. ZDT = piano, ha! Cause it’s a woman directing a woman that no one listens to? Anyway I see ZDT out-performing piano. This cage-match has barely started…
Excellent point about HUGO Christophe!
@Kasper
Yes. That’s the reason why she has all these lines. She’s sort of the wind beneath the wings of Hitchcock it’s a very showy performance… Don’t get me wrong, she’s a force to be reckon with in the movie, I just find it safe compared to Knightley, Riva and Wallis performances… Nothing special, same as Washington in ‘Flight’ where I would rather see Hopkins than him in Lead Actor list…
@unlikely hood
Nicolas Sarkozy is no longer president, sigh 🙁 but he can still invite Harvey for a weekend at his wife’s beach mansion on the French Riviera next time he comes to Cannes!
Go Django! I knew it was gonna be it’s coming out party!
….AAAND best director is still the hottest action, but it’s now a 7-person race, welcome Quentin!
Sorry but PT Anderson is out of it. The BAS trio is locked. Hooper Lee Russell and QT are fighting for 2 positions. If Russell and QT get them, Harvey Weinstein gets a second Legionnaire Medal from Nicolas Sarkozy – just because.
Phantom, it’s not a report card. I don’t think Academy voters will think: “Well, I liked this movie, but there’s no way I’m voting for it because it has a 60 metascore/didn’t have a Golden Globe nom”.
Reviews, awards and nominations are good because of FYC ads, because the movie can be more seen. These things, SAG, Golden Globe are just INDICATIONS of what is on the industry’s mind, and not what films “NEED” to go all the way to the Oscars.
Every year a “rule” is broken, and that’s only because some people, like you, make up these rules. Chill out, man.
Ps: sorry for my English, I’m Brazilian.
Sasha wrote that Lincoln had Spielberg films’ best scores at SAG (4), GG (7) and BFCA (13). In order to get the record at the Oscars it would need 13 nods (Schindler’s List had 12).
If it got 13 (the same as Schindler’s List but with three actors instead of two), I think Lincoln would win some 9 Oscars.
I’m basing this with 1993. A VERY strong year, like this one. Voters get confused and want to be on the winner’s side (only human) and in this case Lincoln sounds like a winner. It would also mean that its biggest candidate ZDT would win some major awards, too. Chastain for Actress and Editing quickly come to mind.
The difference would be that Schindler’s List won 7 without either of the two actors. Was it because they were first-timers? Well, this time they’d be previous (multiple even) winners.
1993 was so strong that they were lost during the nomination process, too. How else can you explain The Fugitive? ZDT could be this year’s The Piano, sort of.
@Sato: Actually, Helen Mirren has the bigger arc in the movie. Her role as the “wife of Hitchcock” WAS equally the dramatic tension in the movie as the making of Psycho was. She gets the big speech, she gets the big ‘saves the day’ moment. I don’t like the movie, but it would be unfair to say Mirren’s role was just “the wife of Hitchcock.”
@kasper
Beat that ass, Miss Thing! He’s still bitter Pinnochio lost the election.
Anyone who guessed Salmon Fishing in any of the categories deserve to win something. That would’ve been a great NGNG.
Also @PaulH… maybe someone should break it down for you. Say you were in the Navy SEAL team that captured the #1 most wanted dangerous terrorist, who has minions all over the world. Would you go bragging on Good Morning America revealing who you are.. putting yourself and your family in danger…your whole life. Maybe, just maybe, that’s why you haven’t heard of a “Maya” before.
PaulH, The Hobbit is an awful film. That’s why. Reviews are bad, as they should be. I gave it 2/5 (all LOTR films were 5/5).
@ phantom,
I’ve never understood your approach by the numbers. Last year is last year. Last year The Tree of Life made it despite of little precursors’ support, Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close made it with nearly zero support and some awful reviews. Rooney Mara made it into the final five with a GG nod only (no SAG, no BFCA, no BAFTA!) and Tilda Swinton failed after having all the precursors she needed and some critics. Of course in the last few years the GG-SAG-BFCA failed to get nods for Angelina Jolie, Emile Hirsch, Ryan Gosling (all three in a SINGLE year!). That same year SAG and Critics’ Choice nominee Catherine Keener was ignored. And that year Tommy Lee Jones made it into the final five with the support of NO major group, Depp made it with the Globes AND the Critics’ Choice (but NO SAG). Ronan made it with the Globes and the BAFTA’s. Linney made it after being snubbed by every group.
So why should this year be like last year? It could be like 2007. Or like 2010, where Jacki Weaver and Michelle Williams made it without the SAG. They had GG and BFCA, but no SAG. So actually your approach by the numbers is wrong because if you approached last year’s predictions like the year before (2010), then you had Fassbender and Brooks nominated, given that Weaver and Williams were. So have you predicted that, you would have been wrong. You can’t judge by the numbers.
There’s plenty of time actually. We could see many surprises. I predict Riva to make it despite of the snub. And I predict DeNiro to fail. Historically, not just last year, DeNiro is in a bad position. But I think that he’ll suffer mostly from the lack of number 1 votes.
I believe we’ll have surprises. It started like a boring year, but it’s getting crazy!!!!!!
Nicky Kidman and her hubby both received nominations, I just noticed that.
I am sure The Beard (Taylor Swift) is probably real happy that she got nominated and Jim Cameron part 2 didn’t. She’ll probably write a song about it. I just hope she doesn’t win. She is faker than J.Travolta’s lace front.
Lots to comment about GG noms, mas all have been said before. I just have to say I don’t get those people who say Marion Cotillard is a overrated actress who’s always in contention, who’s always nominated and bla bla bla… look, after her Oscar Welldeserved Winning, the got very much snubbed when she should have been nominated as Supporting actress for Public Enemies or Nine (2009), Inception (2010) and Midnight in Paris (2011).
For those few fans out there rooting for The Hobbit; every LOTR film got a mention at the 2001, 2002 and 2003 Globes. No noms this morning does not bode well.

@Sam Juliano
Last year, Hugo was buried in the crowd at the Globes with only 3 noms (The Artist had 5), yet it was the most nominated films at the oscars and won as many as The Artist (though not the biggest prizes).
“Was Helen Mirren really that great in Hitchcock? Maybe I should see that movie afterall.”
-NO. Not hating her but the only reason she had screen time is because she plays the wife of Hitchcock. It’s a shame that she’s getting the awards limelight from Hopkins…
Haven’t seen The Impossible but isn’t Watts Australian? BAFTA better resurrect Knightley and Riva or Wallis…
Really glad of where Kidman’s campaign has gone from zero to GG/SAG combo. Hope she could make it in the Oscars! Guess phone calls from France shoot pays off?
Guess we’ll be seeing the same people again in a different movie next month!
And why the hell the Salmon is Fishing in Yemen? Doesn’t make sense! Would rather have Pitch Perfect…
I was disappointed to see Hooper snubbed, and though Phantom’s analysis was focused and exceptionally persuasive, I never bought the idea that the Globes would be especially attracted to LES MIS in the first place. It received the noms it needed to: Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress. It never was in the running for screenplay, and never had a chance at same award at the Oscars.
I say Hooper will still land a Best Director nod from the Academy, and the film will still score quite well.
Yes I have not seen the film (but did see the Broadway show three times) but neither have the LES MIS nay-sayers, who are converging like bees on honey. 4 GG noms was enough, methinks.
The only one that gets a pass here is my dear friend Pierre de Plume!!! He’s the best!!!
Ha!!!
Funnily enough, I just watched Salmon Fishing minutes before the GG nominations. Had had that blu-ray for weeks and never found the time to watch it. I know now why. It was not very good. Gonna throw a seagull in the head with it.
“I mean, whoever heard of “Maya” in any talk about the search for Bin Laden in the first place?”
isn’t that the whole point? if she is any good at her job, we’ll never know who she is =P
but the true horror for me is NO MAD MEN FOR DRAMA SERIES. or did I accidentally miss it?
Snubs for big stars like McConaughey, Bardem, Maggie Smith for Marigold, Hopkins, and even De Niro give easier precedent for them being snubbed by Oscar, regardless of SAG or BAFTA choices. Also not good for Les Mis/Tom Hooper. The film only got the expected nominations minus Hooper. No Barks, Redmayne, Crowe, or anyone else from the film.
Watts and Mirren are looking good. Wallis and Riva – do they have enough of parts to get in? Will the Academy love their films? Mirren in particular feels like filler, but everyone said her performance was the best part of the film.
I had to Google SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN. Well, this is better than a starfucker nod for Tom Cruise in Rock of Ages, not that he rates so highly anymore, or probably Barbra Streisand in The Guilt Trip.
The Globes love Nicole Kidman. They like Maggie Smith, but could have liked her more. (They know she won’t show, though.) They may have liked the cast of The Impossible enough to nominate Ewan McGregor for his comedy. I’m sure they really, really like Sally Field. Tommy Lee Jones, not as much.
What does bootystanks mean? Sounds negative… plus booty.
I was being facetious, bootystanks! Sheesh! Lighten up, but I can tell from your pic that you have no sense of irony.
“…Kat Bigelow win again, because it do take balls and nerve to direct 2 war films in a row and have them be successful.”
PaulH will reply you shortly.
“How many has Spielberg directed? Like 30 war movies, his most recent success was Saving Private Ryan.”
30 war movies? His total is about 30 and they are not all war movies. Not even close.
Phantom, you genius. There’s nothing much to add after your analysis…
As much as I love Nicole (and I do!) I still don’t think she’s in good standing for Oscar. Though she’s a previous Oscar winner and multiple nominee, I can see her go the way of Mila Kunis and Cameron Diaz who were both SAG and GG nominated – to be Oscar snubbed. Obviously, Kidman’s a much greater actress than them. Perhaps I’m just keeping my expectations downplayed cause nothing would please be more than seeing her get another Oscar nod for this daring performance. Perhaps Oscar likes his women more daring than his men (Fassbender). Hopefully. I would actually love if the GG supporting actress category translated to Oscar.
This from Queerty: “Jones’ Hope Springs co-star Meryl Streep, who can score a nomination just for heavily sighing on screen, is nominated for her 303rd Globe.”
lol….Poor Meryl – she is so aware of this perception and often seems embarrassed.
Only one person has ever gotten up at the mic and recognized those performances that get ignored: Meryl Streep! she did it last year, also when she won for Julie and Julia, and when she won for the Devil Wears Prada.
Wednesday 9 January – BAFTA Nominations Announced
when are the BAFTA longlists announced?
JJ I agree. Leslie Mann is a horrendous mess and she keeps getting casted because she’s boinking the director. I hope the skank doesn’t think that her collaboration with Apatow is like Leo and Marty or Quentin and Uma or Wars and Spielberg.
Thx Phantom for the very interesting stats but I think you forgot smth major: Leo Dicaprio was nominated at cca, sag and gg for J. edgar but snubbed at the oscars. on the other hand gary oldman started his awards season at the baftas and rode the wave to the oscars so the race is still wide open for the last slots…
As much as we’d like to believe such or such are locks, the Oscars are UNPREDICTABLE.
THE ACADEMY DOES WHAT THE ACADEMY WANTS. Their picks might agree with the precursor awards but they do not in any way let themselves be influenced by any of them.
Very good stats, Phantom. So I’m guessing your list would look like this, right?
Actor:
Day-Lewis
Jackman
Hawkes
Washington
Cooper
Actress:
Chastain
Lawrence
Mirren
Cotillard
Watts
Supp Actor:
Arkin
Hoffman
Bardem
DeNiro
Jones
Supp Actress:
Hathaway
Field
Hunt
Kidman
M. Smith
No Mad Men for a brilliant 5th season….I agree with Radich, Mad Men is so above the rest of television that even a lukewarm year (and the 5th season was NOT) is superior to anything else on tv…
Mcconaughey was squeezed out again and Arkin gets in. Ok.
And Mirren and Streep – love these ladies, but no. Hope Springs was a vacation for Meryl.
Anyone could have played that role. I bet Meryl is thinking, ‘Oh God, people hate me now’
Jack Black was brilliant in Bernie but doesn’t have a chance this year at the Oscars because of the bigger name competition.
Ehh, does anyone take the Globes seriously. It might be unwarranted, but I haven’t since the Pia Zadora fiasco. This was always like the tacky cousin to Oscar.
AD
I was very disappointed about the Knightley-snub, too. Now her only hope is the mysterious British-vote…but even if there is such a thing, it could simply favor others in her category : Helen Mirren, Rachel Weisz, Maggie Smith, Naomi Watts.
The one tiny thing that might help her out, is the fact that the Academy loved the previous Wright/Knightley films considerably MORE than other organizations : Pride & Prejudice pulled off 4 Oscar nominations including Best Actress, although she didn’t receive either a SAG or a Bafta nomination; and then Atonement received 7 nominations including picture, screenplay, supporting actress without a single nod from the crucial PGA/DGA/WGA/SAG quartet.
HOW THE FUCK DID PARANORMAN GET SNUBBED?
No love for the Apatow – that’s a surprise. Guess it’s not that great a comedy.
Salmon Fishing the Yemen? Some weirdo on the board is probably from the Yemen. Or Sony bought the nominations ala The Tourist and Burlesque.
Unfortunately, what did in The Hunger Games, The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises is that they were too mainstream for SAG or the Globes. If they had collectively made Salmon Fishing in the frakkin’ Yemen-esque $, they’d have had more of a chance.
If Django scores BP/BD/Original or Adapted Screenplay? oscar noms, they cannot ignore Q again. The Academy has to award him the director or screenplay oscar. His movies are crowd pleasers and critic darlings. How many more times has Zemekis been nominated after he won? 0! I think.
I do want to see my Ho Kat Bigelow win again, because it do take balls and nerve to direct 2 war films in a row and have them be succesful. How many has Spielberg directed? Like 30 war movies, his most recent success was Saving Private Ryan.
In what world does Mad Men not get nominated for Best TV Drama and Game of Thrones doesnt get any TV nominations at all?
Maybe because they read the book and think the show is terrible in comparison.
I really don’tthink Lincoln has this locked up by any means, I still consider ZDT to be the frontrunner.
Yes, I think the actors branch is large and there are some great performances in Lincoln that help it get those extra nods. But don’t forget, many in the acting branch have strong ties to NY and with the relevance and timeliness and better critics reviews, I think ZDT still has the edge.
I’m not 100% sure on Django Unchained’s chances (the Globes can be controversial…), also, unless Les Mis scores big at the BAFTA (and that is quite possible), Hooper and his movie are dead.
@ phantom
I love reading your very informative posts. Thanks.
Sweeney Todd was great. I liked all the characters, even the really bad ones.
Comment
GREAT LIST!!!! Hooray for “Django” and “Life of PI”!!! Tarantino and Ange Lee > Tom Hooper.
Very happy for DiCaprio and Waltz!!! (But I still don’t really understand why Alan Arkin is a contender, as much as I like him.)
Some interesting data :
Last year there were
– 5 (Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Ryan Gosling, Shailene Woodley, Albert Brooks) acting contenders who failed to receive a SAG-nod but pulled off the GG/BFCA combo. None of them made the cut at the Oscars. This does not bode well for JOAQUIN PHOENIX and AMY ADAMS.
– 3 (Glenn Close, Janet McTeer, Jonah Hill) acting contenders who failed to receive a BFCA-nod but delivered the SAG/GG combo. All three received Oscar nominations. That’s definitely promising news for HELEN MIRREN and NICOLE KIDMAN.
– 2 (Melissa McCarthy, Nick Nolte) received SAG/BFCA nominations but no Golden Globe. Both made the Oscar-cut. So, hello JAVIER BARDEM and ROBERT DE NIRO !
Good question, Mik. I understand some Mad Men fans hated this past season (I’m not one of them), but Mad Men in a bad day is even better than any Newsroom episode. Shame.
Congrats to all the nominees! I am happy to see Lincoln as the frontrunner, at least for now. Looking forward to the Guilds’ nominations.
As I see it, this has been a great year for film.
AHH the Foreign Press, they love their stars no? Anyway, pretty disappointed about the zero love for Anna Karenina and Knightley, for Wallis and Beasts and for no Riva. All for Helen Mirren the ubiquitous dame, and the same old other stars who get invited every year just because they make a movie. Great for Tarantino and Django, and for the Master. I hope the Academy give us some some interesting variations next month and that Wallis and Riva get back in the game.
And look at the Best Song nominees. Nothing to do with the songs, and EVERYTHING to do with the names:
a. ―FOR YOU‖ — ACT OF VALOR Music by: Monty Powell, Keith Urban Lyrics by: Monty Powell, Keith Urban
b. ―NOT RUNNING ANYMORE‖ — STAND UP GUYS Music by: Jon Bon Jovi Lyrics by: Jon Bon Jovi
c. ―SAFE & SOUND‖ — THE HUNGER GAMES Music by: Taylor Swift, John Paul White, Joy Williams, T Bone Burnett Lyrics by: Taylor Swift, John Paul White, Joy Williams, T Bone Burnett
d. ―SKYFALL‖ — SKYFALL Music by: Adele, Paul Epworth Lyrics by: Adele, Paul Epworth
e. ―SUDDENLY‖ — LES MISERABLES Music by: Claude-Michel Schonberg Lyrics by: Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schonberg
Only the song from Les Miserables was nominated, not based on some superstar person. All of the others got their respective nominations because of who wrote them or co-wrote them. Of the above, only the last two will make the Oscar list, along with the Paul Williams song and where is Howard Shore in score for The Hobbit?
WHAT!!!!! NO Dark Knight????? HUH???????
@SG: Helen Mirren did what she could in Hitchcock, but she wasn’t given much to work with — the movie is pretty ho-hum.
Glad to see Hooper and Russell snubbed for Best Director. There’s hope yet!
Totally agree, Paddy!
The globes have hit a new all time low. Beast completely ignored. They’re insane. No Riva? Beyond insane, but with them, as long as you’re a movie star name, you get in.
In what world does Mad Men not get nominated for Best TV Drama and Game of Thrones doesnt get any TV nominations at all?
yay for marion! i just gotta say, her choices after winning the oscar were pretty smart. public enemies, inception, contagion, midnight in paris, dark knight rises all earned $100M+ in the box office. good for her. (i did not include 9 although she was good in it. :p)
thanks, phantom, for write-up.
POST-GOLDEN GLOBE OBSERVATIONS
1. Lincoln is still the frontrunner…by a landslide.
2. I said yesterday Django Unchained NEEDS strong HFPA-love or it’s done…well, it is most certainly not done and with the rather strong BFCA-showing and the early Academy-deadline, it might just have the right kind of perception to land at least Best Picture/Best Original Screenplay nominations, whether it can pull off acting (supporting actor is still a mess) and directing nominations, is still a big question. Best Director is especially crowded this year.
3. I think Argo is now officially back in the top3 edging out Silver Linings Playbook and Les Miserables . Neither of those two landed BD-nominations here which should be a bigger problem than it looks at first glance, considering both films were supposed to be EXACTLY the kind of contenders the HFPA loves to shower with awards and nominations.
4. Life of Pi is finally gaining some traction, it is definitely a near-lock in BP and probably in Adapted Screenplay, too, the question is, could Ang Lee get past Russell, Hooper, Anderson and Tarantino ?
5. Zero Dark Thirty continues to be a solid contender and a viable threat for BP/BD, I think its biggest obstacle will be the Actors Branch. The support of the most dominant Academy branch is crucial and whether the SAG Ensemble-snub was due to late screeners or a conscious decision, is still a big question. For the record, no film has pulled of BP without the Ensemble nod since Braveheart (1995).
6. Could The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel actually get a BP-nomination ? It has the SAG Ensemble, nod, too and that definitely counts. Still, I think it will go the Bridesmaids-route which had the exact same Golden Globe/SAG nominations but couldn’t deliver the 5% No1 in the end, and I don’t think ‘Marigold’ could, either.
7. Tom Hooper is in BIG trouble. I don’t think his film has to do much to land a BP nod, but to possess the kind of perception ENOUGH for a BD-mention, he probably needed that Golden Globe nomination. The HFPA was supposed to go apeshit over Les Miserables, and in the end no directing, writing nominations and none of the viable, underestimated supporting acting contenders, either. 4 Golden Globe nominations are simply beyond disappointing…to put it in perspective, Nine (!!!) had 5…
8. Something I have been talking about for weeks seems to be happening : David O. Russell is losing steam in BD. It isn’t just that Paul Thomas Anderson, Ang Lee, Quentin Tarantino are all viable picks for his place, it is also the fact the Academy could EASILY make him settle in Adapted Screenplay.
9. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen was a nice little film ( saw it on a London/New York flight) and it’s always nice to see Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor in the mix, but they were nominated for the wrong film. She was excellent in Looper and McGregor is receiving very strong reviews for The Impossible.
10. The Sessions-duo is now officially in lock-status the Adams-Phoenix duo are recovering well from the SAG-snubs.
11. Although with the early Academy-deadline, Richard Gere and Rachel Weisz are definitely helped by these nominations, I don’t think it could be possibly enough for actual Oscar-nominations.
12. So great to see the brilliant Naomi Watts and underrated Hugh Jackman pulling off the SAG-GG-BFCA trio. Now I only hope they will get the Bafta and Oscar nominations, as well.
13. If Jack Black had been a stronger presence in the critics groups-stage, this nomination could have made him a viable Oscar contender.
14. If (or more like…when) Maggie Smith receives a Bafta nomination for Quartet, watch out 5th slotters !
15. The supporting actor race is still all over the place, Alan Arkin is now basically a lock, something I don’t agree with, but oh well!
16. WOW…could Nicole Kidman actually get an Oscar nomination (her first in supporting) for The Paperboy ?
17. Strong early acting contenders, Emmanuelle Riva, Matthew McConaughey, Quvenzhané Wallis, are officially in trouble. The SAG-exclusion was bad enough (Wallis wasn’t eligible), but they should have gotten recognition from the starloving (=McConaughey) foreign (Riva) press.
18. Films and contenders that are DONE unless the mysterious British-vote (and subsequent Bafta nominations irrelevant due to the early Academy-deadline) kicks in : Keira Knightley, Jude Law & Anna Karenina; Ewan McGregor & The Impossible; Pauline Collins & Quartet; Anthony Hopkins; Samantha Barks & Eddie Redmayne; Judi Dench & Skyfall
19. Genre films that will need strong Guild-love including at least a PGA-nod to stay in the race : Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit, The Avengers, Cloud Atlas .
20. Also, I might be wrong, but I think Beasts of the Southern Wild is done. Lack of star power, early release date, mixed Academy screening, SAG-ineligibility are simply the kind of damaging factors close to impossible to overcome.
Sorry, but the character of Sweeney Todd is not unlikeable. If you find him unlikeable than you are being too literal in your interpretation. The show (and hopefully the film) sets him up as a victim and you should be identifying with him for a good part of the story until things go a bit awry.
Sure, as the horrors progress, you should be scared of him, he does become a horrible creature. But I don’t think he’s ever unlikeable.
And that’s what makes the show so great, your feelings for the guy which are extraordinarily complicated. If you merely label him “unlikeable” then the show failed for you because that’s too simple of an emotion for such a complex character.
Thanks, guys, for the nice, thoughtful exchange on Phoenix Oscar nom. chances. I have been wondering for months what the Academy will think of him and the film. To paraphrase rufus, now we wait.
I’m still holding out some hope for Quvenzhane Wallis for an Oscar nom. The Globes are all about getting the big stars out; they aren’t interested in a bunch of non-professional folks from New Orleans. And she was SAG ineligible. The Academy likes to nominate kids, although having a (then) six-year-old compete for Best Actress rather than Supporting might be a stretch. If the film doesn’t get a PGA nom then I think it won’t get any major Oscar noms.
“I never thought This is 40 was anywhere near a contender.”
It was predicted to be a nom in Best Comedy and Actress in a Comedy for Leslie Mann
YEAH for Richard Gere, Django, Hooper snubbed and Naomi Watts!
Ohh Noo for no Matthew McConaughey nom, Beasts is a no show, Riva not nominated
*Scanning for Dark Knight Rises…doesn’t see it anywhere*
Phew. Nice you have some sense, GG.
Is Tarantino a lock for an Oscar director nomination? I don’t know. How popular is in Hollywood? He came across as extremely arrogant in the Directors Roundtable on the Hollywood Reporter web site. But then maybe that was because some participates were so quiet like Gus Van Sant and Ang Lee. I guess BAFTA and DGA will help clarify things — or not.
I wonder if even BAFTA will snub poor Keira. I think they did for Pride and Prejudice.
The BAFTAs will provide a clearer look at the acting categories. Last year, I think they were the only group that nominated Gary Oldman. Fassbender was worthy but we had a pretty solid Actor lineup and Demian Bichir was fantastic and probably won’t have the chances Fassbender will have to be nominated in the future.
For relatively unknown actors like Ann Dowd, the SAG nom was required as it was for Bichir, Richard Jenkins, Melissa Leo 1st nom and John Hawkes for Winter’s Bone. That means she’s virtually out and Nicole could be considered a solid contender now.
Best Supporting Actor is a mess… the biggest of all. The only locks seem to be TLJ and PSH… I could see any of the other missing… even DeNiro (remember Jack Nicholson for The Departed).
Best Actress is another mess… I guess Emanuelle Riva gets the Oscar nomination. At least she will rank higher than Q. Wallis, who I find in really big trouble since I was kind of hoping the race would come down to 6 contenders and she could upset and take out Cotillard or Watts. But now that Mirren was resurrected by SAG/GG and even Weisz is back in contention, I fear the fantastic young girl won’t have her name called jan. 10.
Actor is also challenging. DDL is winning. “Oh… but it’s the third and blah blah blah…” He’s a lock. Period and done. But as far he’s a lock for the win… he’s also the only lock for the nomination… ANY and I really mean ANY of the other 5 could miss. Even Danzel, whose film doesn’t seem to have the “passion”. I don’t think Joaquin is missing. It’s Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd, a very unlikeable character in a sort of divisive film (both share the same RT % I guess)… not actually Fassbender in my opinion. Mulligan was also great… but the film was about him and his showdown and an even more polemical one that was directed by a relative unknown director at that time. That’s not PTA’s case. The Master has also PSH and Amy Adams, who will be nominated despite the SAGs. PSH is very solid and he will help get Joaquin there. Pairs usually go together. One nom help the other. Jeff Bridges brought MG, Danzel brought Ethan Hawke… and who could imagine Janet McTeer assured Glenn Close’s nomination because she was so great in a not good film that they felt kind of ashamed to nominate her but the great Close, who has a ton of better performances in her resumé.
Disappointed that Tommy Lee Jones didn’t get a nod alongside his co-star Meryl Streep!
I’m just happy I’ll see Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz and Ewan McGregor at the Globes.
The lamest nomination is Bill Murray for Hyde Park. A forgettable performance.
I have a soft spot for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. A better rom-com in an unconventional setting than Silver Linings Playbook.
So happy David O. Russell was overlooked for his good, not great film.
Maggie Smith is being nominated everywhere but why not? She’s a treasure and won’t be with us forever so enjoy her gifts now.
I thought The Impossible would make best drama with so many nominees. An overlooked film.
I mean, whoever heard of “Maya” in any talk about the search for Bin Laden in the first place?
I mean, whoever heard of “Maya” in any talk about the search for Bin Laden in the first place?
Good god, PaulH. If you’re going to be this willfully clueless I’m not even going to waste time explaining it to you. You should be embarrassed to make a remark like that. Childish. Naive.
@Tero
things might change quickly over Christmas if Les Mis is a hit at the Box Office, but for now Lincoln is the only true frontrunner in this race ending up the week as the leader in the three major pre-oscar competitions (13 cca noms, 4 sag noms, 7 gg noms). Zd30 gave it a run for its money with the critics circle but will it be enough for the oscars. The guilds will tell us more in January.
For now Lincoln is the uncontested frontrunner and behind it no less than 5 movies are vying to join it.
Nicole Kidman does NOT play, bitch! I’m elated she’s getting key nominations for her performance as a skank in heat.
“That thud you heard was This is 40 getting shut out. It looks terrible and Leslie Mann is awful. Maybe Apatow will stop casting his wife and kids in every movie hoping we will start enjoying them one day.”
I never thought This is 40 was anywhere near a contender.
When an action film like ZDT is an awards-frontrunner you know you have a sh*** year. Someone should also tell some people that Bin Laden was found thanks to a pakistani doctor now rotting in prison in Pakistan. Thanks “Maya”.
So, today Lincoln breaks 100M dollars in North America alone and it is Spielberg’s FIFTEENTH (!!!) film to do so. It’s the first for Daniel Day-Lewis.
Guessing that it will be sold to foreigners with posters that say “12 Academy Award Nominations, incl. Best Picture, Director, Actor” and… say… “Winner of 4 Golden Globes, incl. Best Picture”.
I have a feeling that the game will be Lincoln vs. ZDT and no Les Mis for the biggies. The reviews for the latter are just not good enough.
Damn, I got most of it wrong. :S
Pretty obvious at this point that Best Exotic Marigold Hotel will be nommed for Best Picture.
So do we think Beasts of the Southern Wild is not out of the race completely?
Ineligible at SAG and then completely snubbed at Globes?
Is Riva out completely now? Snubbed by both?
What about Dowd? (NOOO!!! i must have her in)
And I am guessing Kidman now seems close to a lock. (what a surprise… but she was REALLY good in the movie – so I dont mind)
Anna Karenina is dead it seems.
And Django is back in a big big way. Do we think this sets it up (along with the rave reviews coming in) for a slew of Oscar nominations (I hope so).
And I thought Quartet was being pushed back? Guess not huh?
Hooray for Paddy for bringing common sense into the arguement!
Yet another Lincoln f**kfest. Fun. But sorry, I don’t swing that way.
The difference between Joaquin Phoenix this year and Michael Fassbender last year is the film. Shame didn’t get much attention in any other categories, and it was NC-17. The Master is getting a lot of attention from a lot of places, and it has two other major acting contenders.
Using previous years or their templates as a pattern is tempting and sometimes useful, but I don’t think this one matches up.
Even the frggin Globes snubbed Lindsay Lohan for Liz & Dick
LOL
No Veep for best Comedy series? And yet, Smash is in there?! Travesty.
still cant get the arkin thing. beyond me. rest my case. maybe i am clueless about cinema. as for the rest, ok, never expected anything out of their box
I’m sad Quvenzhane Wallis didn’t get in…Was Helen Mirren really that great in Hitchcock?
*** Don’t forget, the HFPA/GG’s are starf*kers and would rather have big stars at their ceremony than extremely young and talented newcomers. Shame on them.
“Dan / December 13, 2012
Really unexciting nominations across the board. As usual I’ll watch only the acting categories because they have a pretty good track record for winning at the Oscars, as for the other categories forget it”
Totally agree….this is boring and by the numbers. No Mathew McC for Magic Mike? No John Goodman? WTF?
The same-o, same-o, get the same nominations and wins. Not watching.
The Weinstein Co. leads again with 14 noms (Django 5, SLP 4, The Master 3, The Intouchables 1, Quartet 1).
I guess Gary Oldman was the fifth, I do recall Bichir getting a SAG spot.
Now with time passing and having seen all five of those movies, it would be hard for me to not vote for Demian Bichir. I know he didn’t give the best performance (that would probably be Oldman) but he definitely gave the most affecting performance and A Better Life is definitely my favorite of the five films. It all comes down to that final scene when he is entering the US “illegally” just so he can be home. It’s quite touching.
love that nominations, i was right in 42/61 noms.
Leo & chastainfor the win.
Boring list….absolutely boring…no “little” indie films…sorry, but these are the same actors/actresses that get nominated every single year or every other year….Helen Mirren, every other year; Nicole Kidman, every other year….this also shows that Hollywood is becoming more and more “white” and not open to displaying “new actors”….it’s the older seasonsed already-beeen there and won actors who show up time and time again.
Can finally quote Claire Danes, “Mandy Patinkin. Holla.”
If Jackman and Phoenix are fighting for the last spot then Phoenix better worry. Can’t recall who got in last year over Fassbender, but Jackman has to have a better shot than Mystery Nominee.
No Paranorman but Hotel Transylvania? WTF?
I think you are right, Evelyn. The pattern is identical, except that I think Phoenix has fewer wins in the critics circles than Fassbender did.
He’s back, but briefly, I think, too.
That thud you heard was This is 40 getting shut out. It looks terrible and Leslie Mann is awful. Maybe Apatow will stop casting his wife and kids in every movie hoping we will start enjoying them one day.
And so we finish phase 1 of the awards season. Nothing much happens now until the beginning of January.
Of course, now we get to see some of the movies! Really looking forward to ZDT and Django and hoping they are deserving of their GG noms. Kind of dreading seeing Les Miz now. I’ve seen it three times live and the third time I saw it I was mostly bored except for the songs I like (there are five)
I hope Holy Motors and Amour make it to the suburbs, would love to see them in time to rank them in my top 10 for the year (assuming they deserve it). But if I have to treck into the city to see them, I hope they make it so I can do a double feature.
It’s hard to disagree that some films and performances did get a boost. However, actor and actress categories for Oscar, as everyone knows, still come down to 5 names. Joaquin Phoenix is a wonderful actor, but he seems to be following the nomination and award path of last year’s snubbed Michael Fassbender. LA Critics Award, BFCA Nom., No SAG nom, and a GG nom. Then no Oscar nom. It really appears that Jackman and Phoenix are fighting for that last slot. This would have been unthinkable in October, but there we have it.
Good day for my fellow neighbours in FLF, 2/5 😀
everything is Ok, besides 10 (almost) best movies of the year didn’t enter the list. No HOLY MOTORS, No LOOPER, No BEASTS, No PARANORMAN, No KILLING THEM SOFTLY, No END OF WATCH, No AVANGERS, No HOBBIT, No DARK KNIGHT.
Super glad kontiki got in for foreign, that movie is amaze balls!
DiCaprio and Django love, Hawkes and Phoenix, no De Niro – the Globes are alright!
@superkk
then I guess the best thing to do would be to push the noms deadlines back, the huge delay between oscar noms and oscar night is ridiculous.
i think december releases tend to hurt some movies come award time, especially if they havent been previously reviewed. i.e. i think the girl with the dragon tattoo would of had a helluva lot more award wins(especially for Mara) if it wasnt released so late in the year. luckily she sneaked in and got her a deserving oscar nom. i really still think waltz and dicaprio will get themselves in, especially when more oscar voters actually go out and see the movie come the 25th. just my two cents!
THESE NOMINATIONS ARE AWESOME !!
Joaquin, Amy, Watts all should get nomd for Oscars, too. And Sarah Paulson is amazing. Although I have no idea how Sofia Vergara keeps getting nominated over Julie Bowen.
I’m sad Quvenzhane Wallis didn’t get in…Was Helen Mirren really that great in Hitchcock? Maybe I should see that movie afterall.
I’m happy for Leo…happy for Gere…
The nominations don’t seem that bad with the exception of the exclusion of Beasts of the Southern Wild among some other things.
I think this race is actually interesting this year though.
The list is so “boring”.
The Tom Hooper snub only means something if Les Mis loses the Best Picture – Comedy/Musical. That race will be exciting as hell! 😀
Looking at The great reviews that Django got on Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes and BFCA this will be a big hit come Oscar. So Happy Les got put in its place.
I am glad This Is Forty got snubbed. I cannot stand that damn Leslie Mann. We all know the only reason your in the movie is because you are boinking the director. Does she do other movies besides Apatows excrement films?
Django surges! The review in The Guardian was a rave yesterday, especially for the performances: 5-out-of-5. The odd thing is, the biggest rave was for Samuel L Jackson, who’s missing here.
Phoenix is back. ‘nuf said.
Directors in trouble: PTA, DOR and Hooper
Beasts of the Southern Wild has a mountain in front of it.
Nice surprises: Ewan McGregor, Cloud Atlas score
I used to get excited seeing French people/films being nominated but now it’s like Cotillard gets in every year, so blasé…
I’m surprised by the inclusion of Salmon Fishing (of all things) over Anna Kendrick for Pitch Perfect, Mark Wahlberg for Ted (which I HOPE pulls off an original screenplay nod) and no Ted, Pitch Perfect in Pic Comedy/Musical. No Eddie Redmayne or McConaughey in supporting.
I could see the best pic lineup being
Argo
Django
Les Miserables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Moonrise Kingdom
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
I can name at least 20 movies released this year which are million times better than the ones nominated..especially with junks like Argo and Lincoln.
The prevalence of drama films in the open categories is most pleasing 🙂
@Corvo
Yeah but… we already knew that.
As always, take the GG noms with a big grain of salt. They never miss a chance to get a big name nominated and thus at their ceremony, so it’s no surprise that the likes of Wallis and Dowd got snubbed.
Awesome to see Jack Black get recognition for his superb role in ‘Bernie.’ If I had an Oscar ballot, he’d definitely be on my Best Actor list.
Sorry for Riva, glad to see Phoenix and Gere nominated but Mirren, Dench and Streep again and every year for every film they make…boring!!!and why is Arkin getting nominated for everything and John Goodman for nothing? I liked Goodman more, though none of them did anything special in Argo but if Jonah Hill can get nominated for nothing so can Goodman.
Tero,
Seems they went drama heavy with all of the open awards. Interesting. Oh well.
Such a competitive year, the frontrunners can only get their locks into the race, except lincoln that really dominates the others. Splits, splits, splits and more splits ahead… splits everywhere!
They loooved Django! And Salmon Fishing in the Yemen #bought
Still, Nicole Kidman (x2), Naomi Watts, Emily Blunt…my oh my…
Glad to see Hooper and Russell snubbed for Best Director. There’s hope yet!
UGH. i am shocked they snubbed wallis AND henry. UNREAL. kidman can take the 5th spot thats fine. i heard she got raves for the paperboy. i mean giving a guy a golden shower cant be easy, now can it? lol.
but can we just knock out adams and put in dowd? i mean her snub is just unreal and unjust.
glad to see weisz show up again. shocked mirren is really actually in this race and riva is really actually basically out.:/
i already know theyll be some surprise nominations come the 10th. theres way too many people vying for 4th/5th slot that someone will cancel themselves out and itll go to someone random. im actually excited for once yet nervous at the same time.
This is the most cerebral the Golden Globes have ever been. I really am quite shocked at many of these.
The also seemed to forsake their international flair. Not The Impossible, No Skyfall Supporting nominations are both surprises. No Hooper (Or O’Russell) in Director, the Drama Line-up is the Director Line-up. And with the exception of Hathaway none of the supporting actors come from the comedy/musical side.
Lots of surprises here.
Where in the hell did Salmon Fishing in the Yemen come from to score THREE nominations? RANDOM.
BEST ACTRESS is all over the place. I think we can safely assume now that Keira Knightley is (sadly) dead and buried. Which is a shame because I thought she was terrific in Anna Karenina. I think Chastain, Lawrence, Cotillard, and Watts are locked. Not convinced on Mirren just yet, which may be foolish since she’s such an Oscar staple. I think the last spot is still a fight between her, Weisz, Wallis, and Riva. Speaking of Riva I cannot believe she was snubbed again. WTF?!?!
Best Supporting Actor is still anyone’s game. REALLY surprised they snubbed DeNiro here, but I assume he’ll make it with Oscar. Alan Arkin is looking locked, as well as Hoffman and Jones. No idea what to make of the Django boys and who makes it to Oscar’s shortlist.
I somehow feel like supporting actress here will match up with Oscar, unless Maggie Smith somehow sneaks in, which is very likely. I don’t think Ann Dowd will make it.
Overall interesting nominations. Strange that Hoooper was snubbed in director. Will Oscar repeat this?
BOOM Django is back in a BIG way
So upset over beasts totally snubbed, wtf
So upset over Riva
I love kidman, and loved her in paperboy, but I wanted Ann dowd to get in so very bad
Jessica Lange.. American horror story.., YES
SALMON FISHING?!
So excited for jack black in Bernie.
Yay Adele, but no other sky fall 🙁
Woah, what happened to Les Mis? This group was supposed to eat it all up. I think everybody got Director wrong in their predictions.
No Riva again?. Ridiculous.
Yay! Joaquin Phoenix, Richard Gere(!), Toby Jones for The Girl (love him). Even happy that Django got in even though I’m not the biggest Tarantino fan. But just to shake things up a bit non?
But I would have loved it if the young girl from Beasts of the Southern Wild was nominated instead of Helen Mirren (guess the film wasn’t there thing). Nicole Kidman over Ann Dowd? Expected…
But, as Golden Globe nominations go… these aren’t so bad!
@Siam
“Glad to see everyone from The Master got in.”
Everyone but Paul Thomas Anderson.
One thing is certain: Whatever film wins the Globe for Drama is DOOMED.
We know one thing for sure, the academy will probably take out Cloud Atlas for score and put in either The Master or Beasts of the Southern Wild…I have a feeling with that. Plus the HFPA aren’t known for going out on a limb with more subtle work with original score, except for Syriana that one time I’ll have to give them that.
My highlights/surprises:
– No love for “The Master” as Drama Picture
– A lot of love for “Django Unchained”
– A lot of love for “Salmon Fishing in Yemen”… and for the cast.
– A surprinsing nomination for Richard Gere as drama actor over others!!! (as Tom Holland).
– The snubs of Wallis and Riva… even if they had much more gap for a nomination in the GG.
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen…really? I wanted this movie to be good, but it was just cringeworthy.
YEAH for Joaquin, Amy and PSH
I’m half asleep so I only saw the televised ones.
Really happy for DJANGO UNCHAINED. I guess Tom Hooper will have to just hold someone’s purse. Totally forgot about that Salmon movie. I never saw it.
Hard to deny that ‘Django’ got the biggest boost from the GG noms. Everyone had DiCaprio penciled in for an Oscar nom but maybe we can go ahead and add Waltz to the list as a semi-lock as well.
Then again, the Academy does what the Academy wants all this pre-Oscar-noms bs is just bs. So don’t get all worked up over this people!
WOWWWWWWWWWWW MY WIFES ARE GETTIN IN!!! WEISZ AND KIDMAN!!!
SO IS KEIRA DEFINITELEY OUT? WHAT A SHAME!!
MIRREN? REALLY???LOVE HER BUT NOT THIS YEAR
PLS I DONT HAVE NOTHING AGAINST HER BUT I WOULD LOVE TO SEE AMY ADAMS GETTIN SNUBBED I THINK SHE IS OVERRATED
IT IS MARION OR RIVA!
WALLIS OUT? WATTS SAFE?
THE LAST 2 SPOTS IN ACTRESS ARE BETWEEN WATTS, WEISZ, MIRREN, WALLIS?
Harvey has 4/5 of the supporting actors, even if De Niro gets a nod in the Oscars instead of someone from Django.
So Lincoln leads with 7
Django 5
Les Mis, SLP, ARgo, Zd30 trailing at 4
The MAster 3
Okay, so like 97 people have already said Jackman was in Musical/Comedy category. I got it. You people should read like two posts further down and the 96 after that.
Beasts of SW got shut out and Riva took a huge hit.
And just like that, QT is positioned for not only a best pic nom at the oscars even more than before, he could slide into the best director spot as well. I am SHOCKED that Hooper didn’t make the cut. Wow.
AWESOME news for Gere and Arbitrage. I hope he somehow makes the final five for the Oscars.
Couldn’t be happier for the Master. For everyone complaining about the GG’s, look at what it has done for The Master.
Also, they got it right in 2010 with TSN over TKS. Free lifetime pass for that.
DJANGO is totally in the race! Yeah!
Dan, these are EXCELLENT nominations. VERY exciting. Don’t know what you wanted to get nominated, but I got what I wanted no doubt. 🙂
Yecch. Who does Ang Lee have compromising photos of that Life of Pi keeps its award season going? Seriously? It’s almost as if Hunger Games, The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises never existed this year. A thoroughly uninspired class of 2012.
Surprised that Riva got no love from this Eurocentric group — maybe the theory is right that she and Cotillard can’t both get in.
WTF is Salmon Fishing in the Yemen?!
danemychal
Hugh Jackman wasn’t snubbed, he was nominated in the other category.
Beasts completely snubbed
My bad. But no Hooper still. And no additional supporting acting noms for it.
Harvey can now campaign the Globes for SLP and Django both. This is where his campaigns really begin.
Django is in the Best Picture lineup. Don’t worry, QT fans!
Is it just me or was that old lady and man giving a Liz Taylor/Dick Clark 2000 GG vibe?
Jackman did not get snubbed danemychal he’s in the comedy category!
Jackman wasn’t snubbed. He was nominated in his category, Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. I remember it because it came out of Megan Fox’s hot lips. She’s so hot!!!!!!!!!!
As good as Helen Mirren is… if Hitchcock becomes an “Oscar nominated movie” and Beasts Of The Southern Wild doesn’t…
*puts loaded gun in mouth*.
Really unexciting nominations across the board. As usual I’ll watch only the acting categories because they have a pretty good track record for winning at the Oscars, as for the other categories forget it
Ummm…Jackman was nominated
Man, that Django Unchained double-nom in Supporting Actor really came out of the blue. Quite the boost for QT here.
YES! Tarantino over that hack Tom Hooper! Golden Globes have my respect for life! Also great for Phoenix and Adams, back in the race again.
Glad to see everyone from The Master got in.
Danemychal – Jackman is in musical/comedy category.
Oh, and Hooper snub too. Wow. It might have trouble beating Harvey’s SLP machine now.
hmmm ok then no Dench & Bardem boooooo
at least Rachel is nominated so Daniel can attend the ceremony at least ))) small lovely things!
Told ya Lincoln was the favorite. The Jackman snub cements it. Lincoln hit on ever nom it was expected to get.
Salmon Fishing in the mother effing Yemen?!?!??!
Way to go Django! That’s the boost they needed!
Django couldn’t have asked for a bigger boost. Holy crap!!!!
It looks like Nicole Kidman is going to take the fifth spot…
Hooper got snubbed?!?!
The GLobes are such a joke!
BOOM! DJANGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gere in over Jackman!!!!!!!
Maggie Smith in “Quartet” bitcheeeeeees!!!!
hilarious noms!!!
is it just me or does Ed Helms look younger as he gets older???
d – cap and waltz … !!!
MEGA LOVE FOR DJANGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow with Django getting screenplay nod. Didn’t expect that with only five total noms.
Can’t believe they nominated Hotel Transylvania over the far superior Paranorman!
I thought Megan Fox was Demi Moore, damn she looks haggard.
So glad my hometown of Nashville became a Golden Globe nominated TV series. Also great news for Cloud Atlas and The Hunger Games.
Had trouble with goldenglobes,org
