Three senators protest the “misleading” content in Zero Dark Thirty
Zero Dark Thirty boasts impressive opening day numbers, according to boxoffice.com. It has a must-see-it, no doubt, “$124,848 from only 5 locations on its first day of release. A final number is due later today.”
Kris Tapley talks to Jessica Chastain about being a woman in a man’s world, the feminism in Zero Dark Thirty. “In Hollywood, in America, the female character not being defined by whatever the man was in the film.”
Jeff Wells took some nice footage of Tarantino at the Academy theater last night having a q&a with Elvis Mitchell. The crowd really went for Django Unchained, and Tarantino got a standing ovation when he came to the stage.
Ideal BP nominee and/or winner: Boxoffice success plus film critic and moviegoer endorsement (high RT number). It’s like you all just read the first two words of the prior sentence and selectively forget the rest of it.
Nevertheless, moving on…
Sasha,
Why on earth is misleading in scare quotes? The film is misleading about torture. It suggests torture led us to Bin Laden (through his courier) which is factually inaccurate. The film presents itself as journalistic and realistic, Boal has talked about the film being as close to truth as it could be, and the one time they go completely off script in terms of reality is to portray torture as having helped us get Bin Laden.
That doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie, or not a great movie even, but it is extremely misleading about torture. How do you justify suggesting it isn’t?
You guys love piling on PaulH. Box office was part of the article this time. So he pointed out that THE MASTER’s per screen average didn’t translate into big box office when it went “wide”. You know his thing is that for movies to be considered award worthy they should be a financial success. Why should he back down? It’s his opinion. Let him have it.
But no. You have isolate him, article to article to article. You guys are a bunch of mean girls.
ftr, I have no problem with THE MASTER. I just still have to see the other half. I did pay $16 though. 😛
Apart from the denim on denim faux par, how fucking suave is Elvis Mitchell?

Maybe The Master didn’t make so much money because you didn’t see it, PaulH. Another $10 might have made it a RESOUNDING SUCCESS!!!
Utter B.S. An out and out lie. Boxoffice might and critical support; that’s what separates the wheat from the chaff. Of Bigelow’s 7 films, she’s only had the latter. Two movies that earned over $20 million (Point Break, K-1 The Widowmaker). The jury remains out on ZDT with mainstream moviegoers until the jury comes in.
Then tell us exactly what you do think, Paul. My impression is that you believe if Zero Dark Thirty fails to reach box-office numbers you deem substantial then it’s a failure that the Academy shouldn’t reward.
Am I wrong about that? Tell us how much money Zero Dark Thirty needs to earn before you think it’s worthy of Oscar. I know you have a ballpark number in mind. What’s the magic box-office number you need to see?
Just tell us, flat out. Don’t mince words. Then I won’t have to explain your attitude to people who aren’t familiar with this standard weekly gripe of yours.
(Let me try guess your favorite films of 2012, ok? The Hunger Games? The Avengers? The Dark Knight Rises? What am I leaving out? Middle of Nowhere? Where does Beasts of the Southern Wild rank in your top 20 of 2012?)
Yes Paul except word got around the general public that The Master wasn’t audience friendly and the film itself had far less cultural relevance and most importantly, timeliness and zeitgeist than Zero Dark Thirty, modern political history inextricably linked to how we live now, how safe we feel, how our intelligence operates. etc. The Master was remote; Zero is gripping. And people also rember The Hurt Locker well.
Leave PaulH alone. If a movie can’t earn $100+ on opening weekend then it’s a waste of his time. There’s only one way to calculate the value of a movie and for Paul it’s spelled $$$.
Ho-hum; The Master had a higher per-screen average and look how that bottomed out .
HAT HAIR!!!
Looks like Zero Dark Thirty and Django are the best films of December. Can not wait to see both. QT will have his first film to have an RT score in 90s since Pulp Fiction.
