No Cloud Atlas? What a surprise…
But we could’ve expected that, it’s makeup is similar to J. Edgar. It’s showy, but not perfect and too theatrical in some cases…

  2. December 15, 2012

I was hoping for a Cloud Atlas just for validation against the imbeciles who branded the filmmakers as racists for the ‘yellowface’.

I know, looking to AMPAS to validate something… I’m ashamed…

Are you kidding me? No Cloud Atlas?

Wasn’t Looper mostly CGI – maybe I read something the wrong way?

But MIB3, Hitchcock and Les Mis over Cloud Atlas in this category is just dumb.

    No PROMETHEUS, a shame.

Paddy – Now that you mention it, I’m sure that had something to do with it.

I really thought this was the category Holy Motors could sneak in. But in regards to Hitchcock, I thought that the fat suit makeup was horrible and distracting.

  7. December 15, 2012

It could easily have been a boycott, either in support of the racism accusations or in fear of stoking them up again.

I say don’t fear the PC prudes. Stoke and provoke, bitches!

  8. December 15, 2012

Oh gosh! No Holy Motors! Yeah, I keep forgetting how it so should be nominated in so many categories and is being shut out of them!

So perhaps enough of the make-up branch didn’t see Holy Motors. With regard to Original Song, that wasn’t about how many of them saw it, that was a case of shutting it out for no good reason.

I loved make-up in “The Impossible”. Strange, why it’s forgotten….

    “Stoke and provoke, bitches!”

Yeah – when did hairdressers and powderpuffs lose their nerve? I’m severely disappointed.

I’m certain they didn’t see Holy Motors (and they probably didn’t see anything other than stills from Hitchcock, or they wouldn’t have voted for it – awful job).

Picks for the 3 finalists for nominations, anyone? I am comfortable in saying Lincoln will get in. After that, I don’t know.

Most likely your three nominees will be…

    The Hobbit
    Les Miserables

Fond as I am of the “homeless look” on Jackman, there will be no contest – Lincoln will prevail over the lawn gnomes.

(now there’s a sentence I would never ave imagined a year ago)

This has been a really weak category in recent years for some reason (Il Divo and The Young Victoria over District 9? Norbit? Click?), and this line up just continues the streak. The makeup in Hitchcock looks awful, Lincoln really isn’t THAT noteworthy, and the exclusion of Holy Motors is just depressing. But the exclusion of Cloud Atlas suggests that the category should be done away with entirely.

    My own lineup:
    - Cloud Atlas (WINNER)
    - Holy Motors
    - Headhunters
    - Dark Shadows
    - The Amazing Spider-Man

Anthony Hopkins’ Hitcock makeup is horrible. This is one category I thought Cloud Atlas had in the bag. I don’t understand the academy at all.

Biggest snub of the season so far… No ‘Cloud Atlas’ in Hair/Makeup. Wow… A mess.

  18. December 15, 2012

    Cloud Atlas edged by Hitchcock?
Because Hopkins was literally transformed. Uncanny.

    “Cloud Atlas edged by Hitchcock?”

Thanks – that’s an image I’ll be trying to erase all night.

a joke. motors and atlas should battle it out. worse than arkin. a bad joke

  21. December 15, 2012

Yes, Motors and Cloud Atlas definitely both got screwed. Also, once they changed the official name to “Makeup and Hairstyling”, I thought The Hunger Games might have a shot. Not saying it should’ve been there, but for some reason I kinda expected it to be at least on the shortlist.

I’m guessing cloud atlas wasn’t eligible because the make up was digitally enhanced….I remember that happening with the hours….

Isn’t Hitchcock predicted to be one of the nominees from the first time a photo of Hopkins was released?

  24. Wellington
    December 16, 2012

In the end this will be, without a doubt: HITCHCOCK – THE HOBBIT – LINCOLN… With “Hitchcock” winning for sure. We all saw what happened this year. Streep became Tatcher and… Oscar for best makeup for “The Iron Lady”. Now, Hopkins becomes Hitchcock, so…

I’m also sad for PROMETHEUS, but “Cloud Atlas”… Come on, people. Let’s just forget about this strange movie.

    December 16, 2012

Come on, Wellington, how about you remembering not to be a jerk. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so how about you letting others hold theirs about Cloud Atlas, which obviously many movie lovers found to be one of the best films this year, a year of many great films to remember.

  26. Maja
    December 17, 2012

Maybe the “CLOUD ATLAS” makeup artists have been Europeans and are not American Guild members, that possibly disqualifies them from the start? Just guessing….

Cloud Atlas had crappy makeup jobs. Any makeup that is distracting from the pic is not good.
