Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

Emotionally manipulative score makes up for deficiencies in writing, direction.
John Williams actually didn’t win for Raiders (!!!). He was beat out by Vangelis’ Chariots of Fire…. The one you missed was Jaws. I’d also love to see him win another–I remember thinking that he had Memoirs of a Geisha in the bag after winning the Globe. Nope.
But Benh Zeitlin winning would surely be encouraging. Let’s see if Beasts gets nominated first.
One of my absolute favorite scores of the year. Heartbreaking and uplifting. By the way, been following your site for a while now, Sasha, but a first-time commenter. Keep up the good work!

As Sasha has said many times there are 2 ways of winning an Oscar: for the your body of work, your career or for the achievement itself. Williams lost for Superman, Harry Potter, Memoirs of a Geisha, Saving Private Ryan, Empire of the Sun, song for Home Alone, Return of Jedi, Empire Strikes Back, Temple of the Doom, The Last Cruzade and The Towering Inferno. I think it’s hard to find more than five composers who top Williams’ losses. If you put the wins… Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler’s List, E.T. and Fiddler on the Roof (adapted), he’s unbeatable. The best ever. And I’ve never seen him winning. 19 years without winning.
JP, the score for Beasts is the best this year by miles — and you are worried about Williams winning yet another Oscar? How about awarding what is deserving instead? What a novel concept!
Absolutely gorgeous score in an absolutely gorgeous film, which, to me, is the best I’ve seen so far this year. I hadn’t realized the director also co-composed the score, what a talented individual!
Beasts’ score is masterful. Hope it does gets nominated (but loses to John Williams… this could be his last shot at winning another Oscar).
