I love that Malick is becoming more abstract. He’s exploring new territory. He’s pushing the envelope of the medium to new heights. Malick is brilliant. Not always easy to watch. But art that teaches us something about ourselves is never easy. It’s supposed to challenge us.
Saw it at TIFF as well, and I’m sick of all the comparisons to The Tree of Life. It’s shot in the same style as The New World, as well. It just happens The New World was set nearly 400 years ago.
If you watch all of Malick’s films, you’ll see many of the same ideas, symbolism, and themes (as well as some shots) reoccur again and again. I believe this is intentional – a body of works that flow into one another. They are all almost the same story, existing in the same world.
Referring to it as “The Tree of Life 2” merely reveals you’ve only seen one or two Malick films or have somehow failed to notice how a premise established in one film is carried over and explored in the next or later films.
It is like a modern day companion to Tree of Life. Saw it as TIFF as well. I don’t think it’ll get as much praise (and award nominations) as Tree of Life however. Agree that Bardem is lovely in it.
I have seen the trailer twice now and it looks perfect for me. I can’t wait to see it.
And don’t forget there is another malick in the pipeline that includes Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender.
Malick hasn’t let me down yet, so I’m looking forward to this.
I saw this in Toronto and can happily say that the trailer does an excellent job at capturing the essence of the film. At times To the Wonder can feel quite bleak – as its subject matter demands – but throughout can be found absolutely wondrous moments, even epiphanies. The standout is Bardem. Some of his voice over work is shattering and so beautiful.
Sadly, this won’t convince those who do not appreciate Malick of his genius. But for those willing to go in with an open heart and mind the rewards are unparalleled.
To the Wonder is a magical film.

Im not a fan of Tree of Life – but I can see why some love it. This trailer looks great btw.
I can’t view the trailer because I’m at work 🙁 I know my two cents won’t be worth much until I watch it, however two pennies is two pennies. After reading these comments it’s clear that some people generally believe this movie won’t live up to The Tree of Life. While that will be a shame, there are a couple of folks here who are right on the money. Even a bad Terrence Malick film still makes you, no pun intended, wonder and think. If it gives your brain an exercise then power to the Malick. I’m just thankful his films are at least coming out more frequently…3 in 7 or 8 years!!! And his stuff is more beautiful than 95% of anything released in any given year. I’ll take whatever I can get because it’s filmmakers like him that keep film alive, ideas alive, and photography beautiful.
I’ll prefer repetitive masterful work over the repetitive usual Hollywood crap! Yup this looks like Tree of Life which was my 2nd fav movie of last year but i am still excited to watch the movie.
Lol at some of those comments.
This looks astounding. How mr Malick composes naturally is jaw-dropping.
Of course Im gonna see this one! Im a Malick fanboy by heart 😉
Rachel McAdams looks good in here
I can’t imagine anybody who ever held а video/photo camera to not like stuff like this. Pure magic.
Reviews are only disappointing in relation to “Tree of Life,” but most of them describe it as a grand majestic experience. (Except for those who cannot get into the whole Malick thing, which I suspect is lots of folks.)
Bad trailer. But trailers teach us nothing (see: trailers to “Lincoln,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Life of Pi”)
Thanks to Lazarus for quickly rescuing this thread. After four films in 33 years, including 20 years of nothing, I “need” as many Malick films as he can deliver over the coming years. Whether they are 100 percent “coherent” or not.
We don’t need another movie that’s so similar to Tree Of Life, yet we’re okay with the repetitive, cookie-cutter shit that comes out of Hollywood on a weekly basis? Who, exactly, is “we”, and exactly what films DO we “need”? More comic book movies? More spy thrillers? More juvenile comedies?
Malick is a genre unto himself, so even if he released a film every YEAR it wouldn’t be too much of his style in theatres.
Also, the people who are saying “wait for DVD” should be sentenced to hard labor in Cinema Jail.
Pathetic.
If you’re gonna see this movie, why on Earth wait for DVD? Malick is one of the few directors whose films take full advantage of being screened in a theater.
I’ll see this, but I am hesitant about Malick becoming more and more abstract with each film and worry about him alienating his audience.
This really does seem like The Tree of Life 2. I really liked that film but I’m not sure we need another movie that’s so similar. That being said the cinematography looks beautiful and I love Rachel McAdams, even if she won’t get a lot of screentime. I’m sure I’ll see it.
To steal a line from a YouTube comment: “WTF? No dinosaurs? I’m out.”
Looks good to me.
Me, too, Aaron B. Looks just fine to me.
I’m a big Malick fan, so was very worried when I heard this was disappointing. But uh…I loved that trailer.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.. Looks like another piece of garbage…

Tree of Life is as great a film as the 21st century has seen, so naturally I look forward to this one.
It sure looks like the trailer for a Terrence Malick movie. The cinematography is impeccable, as always.
Trailer looks good but I can see why reviews are not good. I will see it on DVD. Tree of life did not do much for me.
Yeah. Total mess. I always make up my mind about a full length feature film after seeing the trailer too.
Hanson’s comment makes me angry.
Tree of life 2 with worse reviews. I’ll pass.
Wow that was a mess. I see why reviews are very mixed.
