Nice post. I learn something new and challenging on websites I stumbleupon everyday.
It will always be helpful to read through content from other writers and use a little something from other
sites.

Free – no depth? I took the role completely different. Especially in the second part of film.
The pundits always want surprises because if the awards seem to predictable (to the predictors) they get bored. Then they get their surprises when their secondary picks get nominated (Zeitlan, Haneke) and get angry at the Academy for overlooking their primary picks, as if the surprise picks aren’t just as worthy despite the perception of the others being frontrunners.
They bemoan the Academy for never being bold enough to go for the worthy small film and when they do they bemoan the Academy’s overlook of the conventional big movie. All I can say is argh! Argo fuck yourselves!
Great, so all the boring movies that no one watches got nominated again.. Can’t wait to hear what biopics, true life stories, and other boring pieces of garbage will be nominated next year!
I don’t understand this Q. Wallis love, or Beast of the Southern Wild love. Then again it’s “best” according to the AMPAS (most of which probably haven’t seen a good majority of the films nominated).
All this talk of child abuse reminds me of Dorothy Parker.
You can lead a whore to culture but you can’t make her think.
How is that any different from what Alan Arkin did?
rimshot!
I lost my annual bet with a friend today because I bet that the Academy would come to their senses and leave off Arkin. Argo fucked myself.
*Edit-“not a script.”
I’ve seen the video of how the film was made. They did something similar with the young kids on Winter’s Bone. It was a script. Face it. The Wallis nomination was pure pandering.
It was a script. Face it. The Wallis nomination was pure pandering.
A real actress don’t need no stinkin script.
At what age do most people learn what pandering means?
@Jenny: Ask Scott Feinberg. He kept predicting her all year long. Personally, I keep needing people to remind me she was even in the damn movie.
@m: Probably the opposite. She just played this trashy slut with no depth to her at all. I like Nicole but I’m glad the Academy at least got it right when it came to not nominating her.
I see Kidman’s performance were to dificoult for you, academy. Shame on you.
An anomoly this year: all BSA’s have already won acting Oscars.
I can’t recall a previous list of Best Supporting Actors who have already won an Oscar.
Can anybody verify this for me?
Bloggers run the risk of being called names (like idiot and dope)and I’m a big boy. I can take it.
But I just want to clarify something. When I criticize “Lincoln” (the film) I am in no way criticizing the real President Lincoln (a complex man on many levels which I felt the film never really portrayed). It’s one of the reasons why I dislike the film. It’s title is misleading as it is not about Lincoln, but about the independence proclamation. It’s really more about Tommy Lee Jones’ character and Congress.
And just because a respective guild (the sound branch in this instance) nominates it DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN THEY ARE CORRECT IN THE NOMINATION. There are countless examples of that happening in past AMPAS nominations (and those that were announced today). I felt and I still feel that there were many other films worthy of that nomination (Snow White and the Huntsman, The Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, hell, even Dark Shadows had some fun sound effects).
I have never called anybody an idiot or a dope because they disagree with me.
It’s just an opinion, folks. It doesn’t make me stupid.

RE: Oscar Nominations
__________________________
WTF?
@Winston I just saw a video online of Zeitlin going over lines with Wallis. Clearly she did have scripted words.
Chastain and Lawrence may split the popular vote and Riva comes in for the win.
Re: Wallis-She was six yaers old. She did not learn a single line of dialogue. She did not consciously put herself in the shoes of another person. She was often filmed without being aware she was on camera. She even admitted she knows nothing about acting. At what is this acting at all? I’ve alsway said that the director is the one to credit. It’s not herectical to mention common sense.
The curiosity with Wallis is why the people who pushed for this nomination so need to believe that this was a legitimate nomination. That’s why the Castle-Hughes example is so appropriate. The exact same dynamic was in play. If you are banking on Wallis being an acting prodigy, good luck.
Anyway what’s done is done. But some deserving actress who has worked hard at her craft got left off for a stunt nomination.
She did not consciously put herself in the shoes of another person. She was often filmed without being aware she was on camera.
How is that any different from what Alan Arkin did?
Jacki Weaver? What was awards-worthy about that performance? Does anyone know?
Benh Zeitlin is wrong and I think he knows. He doesn’t know about acting and obviously he doesn’t know about child psychiatry. Quvenzhané Wallis is not an actress and she doesn’t deserve Oscar nomination, first: that is child exploitation. Second; she has not the hability to create a character.
The Spain Cinema Awards, Goyas, has the rule that any adolescents under 16 years old can be nominated.
I hope don’t censure my comment. We live in a free world, ok.
I’m really happy with Quvenzhane’s nod. The acting process is different for a child, but not significantly, in my opinion. It’s still acting.
Zeitlin’s thoughts on Q’s chances from Newsday:
“I heard people say she can’t be acting. But I don’t think [they] understand what acting is. Acting is playing make-believe, essentially. I think what people are referring to is when you’re an adult, to be an actor, you have to conquer all this pretense you build up over years. There’s this whole separation between yourself and your feelings, yourself and your heart. And great actors find a way to get past all that and conquer it.
She doesn’t have to do that because she’s so real, and she’s so herself, and she doesn’t have any pretense and she’s so close to her feelings. … I looked at 4,000 people for that role and I’d never seen a kid who could act like that. It’s a miraculous thing and it’s talent. It’s not like she just wandered in front of a camera and that happened.”
Wallis is just the Castle-Hughes nomination squared. Welcome to Hollywood. That’s all there is to it. A laughable nomination but well telegraphed.
In the case of TDKR. I think you have to pick your year. If it were made a year earlier it would have received up to 10 nominations, including BP.
I am not a great fan of the movie, but that’s probably what would have happened. Against last year’s films, it feels kind of strong and even serious. Not this year though.
Shocking! The Dark Knight Rises completely shut off. Once again a sign of Academy’s hatred towards Nolan.
Ryman, Zach: I liked your recaps.
Best Actress is WIDE open, like Vegas odds right now are probably exactly 20% for each. I love Watts but she is probably out, since she’s the only one without a BP nod. Not enough voters will see her film.
I would like to add to my defense of Michelle that I *loved* Beasts, am thrilled for everyone involved today, and I have no idea if anyone was exploited. Michelle should take comfort in knowing that her arguments will win in the long run. Eventually, all children in films will be CG creations voiced by Nancy Cartwright and Yeardley Smith.
Jennifer Lawerence is the FRONT RUNNER!!!!!! YES!!!!!! wow i cant wait to hear her speech.
Overlook the cinematography.
Overall the most surprises in years
Hanneke deserved bp and bd noms for white ribbon rather than amour.
I love Weaver but that SLP performance is not all that.
Glad Phoenix made it in. The best performance of any actor this year.
Glad Watts made it in. Shes getting a lot of high profile love; could she win this?
Love or hate The master, it’s hard to overlo
Antoinette you’re right that she stole the thread (and I can’t get over the snubs either; there’s egg all over ALL of our faces). But nevertheless…
“She says she’s fine” is what I’m hearing – like from you Ryan Adams – against Michelle’s argument. Really? Is that what you guys would have said in 1977 if Roman Polanski offered the same “She says she’s fine” argument? If he said, well, now I’ve made her famous, so she can follow dreams that 5 billion other people can’t?
Yes I know being raped and being filmed are not the same thing (though I can point you to 100 feminist scholars who disagree). But Michelle’s point is that a child cannot offer that consent. And all the Gucci bags or red carpet moments or whatever don’t change that. Your arguments would keep Honey Boo Boo on the air for ten more years.
Anyway I gave my solution upthread. If you’re a truly independent filmmaker (and can’t afford union dues/SAG reps), ask the local cops to come to the set every day. If they won’t, then try your best not to be exploitative.
Is this the first time ever that two heavy favorites (Affleck and Bigelow) have been snubbed in the same major category ??
The Best Actress race is wide open, with 4 plausible contenders to win:
Chastain, Lawrence, Watts, and yes, Riva
steandric, you’ve no idea what I’m talking about.
I loved Quvenzhane in Beasts. She was superb.
Great to see 4 of the 5 Best Actresses in Best Picture Nominated Films – such a rarity, and makes it tough to pick the winner. I don’t think the child or the octogenerian will win, but Chastain and Lawrence will probably fight it out.
Paddy Mulholland, I agreed with you totally re Wallis’ nomination. Strictly speaking, that isn’t any “performance” at all, it’s just an “appearance” on screen, and so bland. It’s an insult to the real acting talents, like Naomi Watts.
Zach, torture does not work. It does not protect our country. The CIA says so. Democratic and Republican politicians say so. Most importantly, the FACTS say so. Get it right.
Don’t count Argo out. IMO voters might be persuaded to vote it to make up for the Affleck snub.
I loved Beasts, the power in the role of Wallis was the script and narration, not her actual acting
a six year child hasn’t the ability to build a character or interpret an abstract idea, so, Quvenzhané was not acting because she hasn’t the ability to do it, therefore nominate her is attacking the art of acting and its profession
CHILD ABUSE!
Glad the Academy showed their taste in film by snubbing Les Mis from editing an cinematography.
I’ve been quiet about Michele but not any longer. I suggest Michele that you view the interview with Q. Wallis that took place this past Sunday and CBS Sunday Morning. An abused and exploited child would demonstrate behavior that would represent them being inarticulate and have a tendency to be withdrawn if she had suffered abuse. How do I know that? I lived with a Child Psychologist for 15 years who worked specifically with children who had developmental or social issues. They demonstrat behavior that makes you question what’s up.
Ms. Wallis was quite articulate. Smiled openly and seemed to enjoy her moment in the Sun Sunday Morning. She also came across as a young girl with a mind. She didn’t come across as a young girl who would just accept bs for the sake of getting by. I thought myself that at her age her performance had to be coaxed in some fashion. Sunday morning I walked from that interview saying to myself no one coaxed this child. She’s smart. She has a brain. She’s speaks well of herself and her life. She’s has no phsyical traits like twitches or nervous behavior. She was quick when she responded and responded to the questions asked.
She was not exploited. She was not abused. Your continued rant is a disserve to all abused children. You’re beginning to resemble that neighbor who calls Child Protection Services because you have an axe grind against your neighbor that has nothing really to do with the child.
And I won’t attempt too speak for the children of the world. I won’t even attempt to speak for the children in the US because there are abused children and exploited children. Q. Wallis doesn’t seem to be one of them or she’s giving one more helluva a performance.
Oops, meant Beasts!
Beats for the win! Screw corporate filmmaking!
Oh my god, these nominations were absolutely ridiculous, so ridiculous that this year, for the first time (maybe ever), the Globes have more credibility than the Oscars. They shouldn’t even call it the Academy Awards this year. Just call what it is: The Year We Jerk Off to Lincoln. Best Sound? Over Dark Knight Rises? What the hell happened with the audio that made you think, “Shit, this has some great sound!” Oh Christ, I need a Tylenol. Oscars, you have failed me. You have failed me miserably.
May I ask which movie is that pic from?
Christophe – not sure, I think its either How to Steal a Million or What’s New Pussycat. I saw it in the “window” and had to try it on.
This must be a record-setting thread for comments. I had to go an do some outside work (myself, since I don’t have any children available) and it’s still chugging along.
I have mixing feelings abouts this year’s nominees.
THE GOOD
So happy for all nomination of Beast of the Southern Wild, yay! Quvenzhane Wallis; Django Unchained, specially Christoph Waltz, but I would love see Leo DiCaprio also nominated. They were the best part of Django. To me Waltz was a leading role and DiCaprio supporting; and Zero Dark Thirty, my favorite film of the year.
The nomination of NO as best foreign picture. It is the first time that Chile is nominated for foreing language and everybody is so happy and proud for it.
Yay for Adele and Skyfall! I can’t wait to see her winning(secret wish)
THE BAD
David O. Russell, seriously? Over Kathryn Bigelow and Quentin Tarantino? WTF? It seem like the academy really loved Silver Lining Playbook.
Marion Cotillard’s snub for Rust and Bones. I’m a minority but I really liked her performance more than Naomi Watts.
Fight for original screenplay? I really believe that Looper would be nominated.
Maybe I’m also a minority, but I loved Alexandre Desplat score for Zero Dark Thirty instead of Argo.
Ted’s nomination for best song? Hahahahahaha
And finally no nomination for The Dark Knight Rises in Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. Seriously Prometheous got one? WTF?
We are in a very funny predicament now, though …
Are “Beasts” and “Amour” really in a more solid position than “Argo” and “ZDT”? I think that is really up for debate.
If there were only Five nominees, I think we would have to take out Django, Les Mis, and even Amour despite the directing nom. But that leaves six. Would they be:
Argo
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
(two directing nominations would be misaligned with BP, leaving out Beasts)
…or would they be…
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
[either Argo or Zero Dark Thirty]
(in which case we would have to take out one of the two major political thrillers? Or would Life of Pi be out?)
Yes indeed, there were times I doubted that “Lincoln” was so much stronger than “Les Mis” or “ZDT”, and thought that that description of things on this website was overstating it, or just having wishful thinking. But Sasha was right about that. This is “Lincoln”s year, and I’m very happy with that.
From my perspective, it is VERY nice to see “Silver Linings” get this love.
I still cannot agree with Benh Zeitlin over Affleck and Bigelow (or Tarantino). But oh well.
Everyone has to give Sasha credit, despite all the heat she took, for insisting that Les Mis was no more than a #4-6 which is exactly where it landed. And the whole race she has insisted that Ang Lee was NOT one of the outliers for Best Director. Long before DGA and BAFTA came out, she said Lee was a lock. Sure, she said Bigelow and Affleck were locks, but so did every other prognosticator.
I’ve seen her give props to Tapley and others on Twitter this morning, so I figured someone has to give her props (well, and for also saying Lincoln was out in front before many of the others pundits wanted to admit that).
Ryan’s answer about child labor is the best post of the day. I laughed so hard here. This talk about child exploration here is so ridiculous. Next those people will suggest to put an end to the Olympic gold medal US Women Gymnastics team. Many start even younger than QW. And there the pressure is just over the top.
And about who are complaining about the BP nominations: did you REALLY expect it to be different from what it was? REALLY? That, along with Supporting Actor was by far the most predictable lineup. I never embraced that Skyfall/Marigold Hotel thing. What could have happened? The Master, Moonrise Kingdom or even The Impossible could have been the 10th but… nothing unexpected.
The biggest shock is directing, one of the most surprising major category lineup ever.
OTHER SHOCKS:
* The directing lineup without Bigelow and Affleck.
* The Intouchables shut out.
* Jacki Weaver following the steps of Laura Linney/Tommy Lee Jones, Michael Shannon, Maggie Gyllenhall, Javier Bardem and Max Von Sydow.
* SLP in all the 4 acting categories. Which films have done this ever? A Streetcar Named Desire, Network… any other? Look at the films that couldn’t reach those 4: Titanic, Shakespeare In Love, Chicago.
* TDKR ZERO nominations.
* Cloud Atlas ZERO nominations.
* They really like Aardman… they really really like it. Who saw The Pirates coming?
* Both Riva and Wallis nominated.
* Flight over The Master/Looper for script.
SOME GOOD:
* (something virtually nobody will comment) I always pay a lot of attention to the documentary lineup. This year, it is the most positive aspect for me. Amazing. One of the best I’ve ever seen.
* Joaquin.
* Both Wallis/Riva.
SOME BAD
* Fox Searchlight ridiculously poor showing. Had it not waste the attention with that mess of a film that is Hitchcock, they could have campaigned harder for Moonrise Kingdom.
* Affleck, Bigelow, TDKR 0, Cloud Atlas 0, The Perks 0, Looper 0
* (probably the worst of all the nominations) Hitchcock in for that ridiculous makeup over the perfect makeup in DDL.
* This we already knew: The Impossible’s visual effects not making the shortlist. For me, it’s only less impressive than Life of Pi there.
As Sasha always called it’s Lincoln x SLP. Life of Pi will be shot dead by the actors just like Hugo. But SLP might be shot dead by the technical branches. Lincoln is way out the frontrunner. But the current state will give Jeff Wells and Spielberg haters some hope… bad for them. The bleeding will be even more intense in february. It has Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actor and Sup. Actor in the bag and will most likely win one or other tech category.
@Lars
I don’t really care who gets in, frontrunners or outsiders, a mix of both is certainly the best way to go. But the oscar voting process (that we simulated on AD) just seems extremely frustrating, when you have to pick and rank 5 choices (I’m fine with that) while knowing only one of them (which one?) will be accounted in the vote. Voters then have to make difficult choices and adopt strategies that don’t necessarily reflect their real taste and preferences.
Whereas a preferential points system (#1 = 5 pts, #2 = 4 pts, etc) lets you share the wealth between all your favorite contenders, no harm done, no regrets, you’re a happy and satisfied voter bc no matter the result (it would most likely be the same anyway) you KNOW exactly where your vote is going.
At the end of the day my #1 movie of the year is Lincoln and my #2 movie is Silver Linings Playbook. So I’m happy.
But no love for Affleck is sad
I don’t like Michelle. She pretends to like kids and then thinks they shouldn’t be rewarded for their efforts. What are they supposed to do, eat mud pies until they’re 18? AGEISM!!!
You guys totally let her steal this thread with Off Topic comments.
Really Christope? What is so wrong about voting for the “outsiders”, especially if the outsider is Haneke, one of the best working directors in the world? If you are just going to be voting for frontrunners, then people will complain that the Academy members have no mind of their own, and the nominations are boring. Also, how will they be regretful since they vote for their favorites? I think it’s exciting that the frontrunners turn out to be vulnerable and that’s why we have surprises!! Yes, unfortunately Bigelow and Affleck got snubbed, but I’m sure Affleck will get a chance in the future (and even a win). I think come Oscar night, there will be a few surprises too:)
Fabinho Flapp / January 10, 2013
One possible theory to explain all that shit this morning: The Academy wants Lincoln winning and eliminated the strongers contenders (I say Affleck and PTA).
By the way, “The Horror… The Horror…”
Jesus, I think you’re right! Eliminate the enemy, the greatest threats to Lincoln.
What we learned this year:
Harvey Weinstein can buy mostly anything.
In this troubled political and economic climate, Hollywood wants to reward movies that highlight the qualities we like to see in ourselves, the success stories, the come-from-behind redemption — and that includes the underdog film productions themselves. Hollywood was so busy confronting its fatality in Amour that it ignored or marginalized heavier, complex, disturbing fare like Zero Dark Thirty (torture works, is necessary to protect our country from terrorism), The Master (Scientology, but OK, we’ll nominate your powerful performances), Argo (Hollywood can save the world and all, but is it all just a front? What does it mean to be a true hero? Who are our true heroes? Certainly not Ben Affleck.), and even Skyfall (when the sky falls, just how will we stand tall without M, when former agents are turning rogue?) for more inspirational, life-affirming, or simply lighter fare like Life of Pi (life is complex, but we can survive), The Impossible (we can survive…or at least Naomi’s Oscar bid can), Beasts of the Southern Wild (we can rebuild), Silver Linings Playbook (we can find love in the crazy, with our family’s support), Lincoln (the political process works), Flight (it’s a happy ending if you finally feel free in jail), and even Django Unchained (revenge is justified against racist oppressors).
The running theme in all of this year’s Best Picture nominees: loyalty and the courage of your convictions.
Paraplegics are so 1989. (Just ask Javier Bardem.)
(In addition to Cotillard & Hawkes, The Intouchables is about a quadriplegic too!)
Whale riders are so 2003.
Being the most gracious and subsequently prolific Best Actress winner of the last decade means shit.
Two Snow White films didn’t have to cancel out for Best Costumes (Colleen Atwood is a force to be reckoned with). But two French-language lead actress performances? And two dark, relevant political thrillers in Best Director? Not unless they’re about JFK and Hannibal Lecter. Seriously, most of the acclaimed political thrillers don’t have Best Director nominations.
Stop making trash, Nicole Kidman.
Keeping participating in wonderful ensemble films and you’re in, Amy Adams.
It’s OK to be a prick and tell people you don’t want awards if (1) you’re delivering a powerhouse performance and (2) you have Harvey Weinstein behind you.
It’s not OK to tell people you want to win awards unless (1) your performance is undeniable enough, (2) you’re the adorable Hugh Jackman, and/or (3) again, you’re backed by Weinstein (Melissa Leo in The Fighter).
Production design no longer makes sense. (Life of Pi and the recycled Shire from The Hobbit?)
When you’re the visual effects and technical achievement of the year, you at least get both those Sound nominations (Hugo, Life of Pi).
Whoever said that the Beasts of the Southern Wild score was too simplistic for the Academy was right.
Snubs where critics overwhelmingly criticized an element of your film: Les Mis’s direction and fish-eye cinematography, Django’s indulgent direction and editing.
Nominations despite criticism: Hitchcock’s makeup (so the makeup is more award-worthy than the Hopkins performance?), Flight’s script, Hobbit’s arguably fake-looking sets (blame the 3D).
Lots of fission this year. Affleck sweeps the BAFTA nods but is left out of Oscar’s Best Director, even as the actors (Arkin), editors, and both sound mixers and editors take notice. Django is hit-and-miss: Tarantino scores screenplay but not director; Waltz scores, but Leo misses; cinematography sneaks in but not production design (RIP) or costumes; sound editing but no sound mixing. BAFTA ignores Spielberg, but the Academy really, really likes Lincoln (editing and sound). The Academy likes Silver Linings, too, even though the Brits and DGA didn’t care. (Will it beat Les Mis for the Globe? Doubt it.) The critics prefer Zero Dark Thirty, but the Academy doesn’t care. Amour and Beasts are ignored or ineligible for most of the guild awards, but do well today. And everybody likes Pi, but nobody thinks it can win the top awards?
Katy Perry is an Oscar curse; she missed out, and so did Cotillard despite moving her arms beautifully to the tune of “Firework.”
Just because the Academy deservedly nominated you when no one else would (Javier Bardem), it doesn’t mean you’ll get in when your peers and foreign critics all take notice.
Age is just a number, prove Wallis and Riva.
Sasha was right once when she said Wallis is a lock!
Waltz and Tarantino make a more prolific team than DiCaprio and Scorsese.
BAFTA: once the tell, always the tell–at least for films and performances on the fringe. No John Hawkes there means no John Hawkes here (Denzel was always getting in). Joaquin there, Joaquin here. Amour, Beasts, and Django doing as well as they did there means more support here than one might have expected.
Not a good day for Dames (Judi, Maggie, and Helen will be OK).
Half-assed hammy, crazy performances don’t get nominations (Bardem, DiCaprio).
Actors in multiple Oscar-nominated films this year: John Hawkes, John Goodman, and Kyle Chandler. (No such luck for Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Hugh Jackman, Tommy Lee Jones, or Judi Dench.)
You were in two hits this year, but we still don’t want you: John Hawkes, John Goodman, Kyle Chandler, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, and Marion Cotillard.
Number of Oscar-nominated cast members from the Avengers franchise: 13 (Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, Natalie Portman, Stanley Tucci, Mickey Rourke, Don Cheadle, Terrence Howard, Tim Roth, and William Hurt).
Number of Oscar-nominated X-Men & adversaries: 8 (Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, Anna Paquin, Jennifer Lawrence, Bruce Davison, Ellen Page, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and now Hugh Jackman).
Number of Oscar nominees in the entire James Bond franchise:
Number of Oscar nominees in Silver Linings Playbook: 4
Number of Oscar nominees in Lincoln: 7
Number of Oscar nominees in Django Unchained: 7
Number of first-time acting nominees this year: 4/20
Number of Oscar-winner acting nominees this year: 9/20 (with 13 Oscars among them, and it will be 11/20 after Hathaway and Lawrence win this year)
Only William Wyler (12) and Billy Wilder (8) have more nominations for directing than Steven Spielberg (7, tied with Scorsese, Zinnemann, Lean, and Allen)
Christopher Nolan can laugh all the way to the bank. He’ll find Peter Jackson there.
@michelle
Your EIGHTH point, I do agree with. That argument has been made many times and that was the talk before nominations came out. Is it the girls performance or the director getting the performance? Personally, I don’t think she should have been nominated…but that is just me.
Directing category seems like the biggest surprise, no? No Bigelow, no Affleck….kind of shocking.
To sum up ……. AMPAS once again went against the grain with the majority of critics …… we need to stop looking to the critics as a pre-cursor. Secondly, with all the date changes this year it is VERY clear that The Guilds and BAFTA were once the crutches to help AMPAS decide which way to go. Its so all over the place this year and if the dates changes remain in place then predicting Oscar just became beyond complicated and impossible. Next year, pick your favourite film and stick with it!!!!
Off topic a bit but Oscar winner Danny Boyle has released the trailer for the upcoming movie Trance. Looks incredible.
http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/watch-first-trailer-for-danny-boyles-trance/
@michelle
Yep, I said that as an adult….no where did you say what I said was not true.
I think it is funny that you choose the venue of this blog to vent your frustrations. I think your efforts would be more heard somewhere else. We are all here talking Oscar nominations. Maybe you would get your word out more if you tried a different venue. All I am saying is your efforts are falling on deaf ears.
ps: You don’t think a kid understands that show business is success?
WOW at director line-up , i kept staring at it because my eyes were fully expecting to see other names and the discrepancy was puzzling to say the least!
what with all the chatter about bigelow and ben affleck and tarantino not seeing their names was surprising , i feel bad for BEN AFFLECK but maybe they feel he’s got the talent to make another one in the future
Very happy about bigelow snubb (only my opinion but i won’t forgive her for stealing BD from cameron, i loved avatar and found her film a borefest that didnt elicite any enthusiasm in me, again just my opinion)
WOOHOO at JOAQUIN PHOENIX , i know its very unlikely but should he win it would be funny if he had a sally field moment on stage “you really like me” but that’s not his style, but sentiment is the same joaquin the academy does love your acting !!!! pleasantly surprised at DENZEL WASHINGTON nom but then i realized RICHARD GERE didnt get in (can’t please everyone hmmm)
i can see naomi watts winning her first oscar finally , she’s paid her dues in the industry so that’s a plus but will it have any weight in deciding, i don’t care about best actress category to be honest
i wonder what other actor that’s as good as leonardo di caprio has been this deliberately overlooked time after time? poor thing, i can try to understand titanic snub but since he’s played some great characters with better acting GO FIGURE that travesty!
happy THE HOBBIT nabbed a few technical nods means they know the film is out there , more love to come if the rest of trilogy improves on debut?!
the only category i’m truly invested in this year is best actor i really truly want PHOENIX to win it, not a fan of DDL but cant disagree about his peformances being award-worthy either!
and i haven’t seen any of these films save for the hobbit!
Eighth: As I see I can never convice you that unethical child labor is, I will expose an artistic argument of why Quvenzhané and any children can’t be rewarded for a professional performance. According to child psychiatry a six year child hasn’t the ability to build a character or interpret an abstract idea, so, Quvenzhané was not acting because she hasn’t the ability to do it, therefore nominate her is attacking the art of acting and its profession. Nominate Quvenzhané is anything less art, anything less acting, is a mockery to the worldwide actresses. To nominate Quvenzhané is not rewarding the art of acting because she hasn’t the ability to build a character.
I hope don’t censure my comment.
Thanks.
According to child psychiatry a six year child hasn’t the ability to build a character or interpret an abstract idea, so, Quvenzhané was not acting because she hasn’t the ability to do it
You obviously never met 5-year-old drama queen Ryan Adams
@steve50
omg it’s Peter! My best guess would’ve been it’s Lawrence of Arabia, bc I’ve always identified PoT as an older person. May I ask which movie is that pic from? That could be an interesting watch!
God!
First: Jim you said that because you are an adult right now and knows now showbusiness is success.
Second: Eric P. Reports have written which says Sasha Stone, Oprah Winfrey and Susan Sarandon supporting Oscar nomination to Quvenzhané Wallis. A child who had 6 years old when she made the film…
Third: It seems Mr. Ryan doesn’t remember the many cases of abusive parents of actors children in Hollywood. And it seems he doesn’t remember the principles of Rights of Children.
Fourth: Quvenzhané Wallis was not stands only five minutes in the camera. She was being obliged to act, because, Did she want being an actress and her parents receive money of she did?
Fifth: The only nomination of Wallis opens a path of criminal permits on child labor. The next year zygote will be nominated, lol.
Sixth: The Child labor is not permitted for the countries which signed the respect the Rights of Children, arts, showbusiness, sports, working in any area…You support that?
Seventh: In the countries which permits the child labor there is a highest rate of sexual abuse
Thanks.
Third: It seems Mr. Ryan doesn’t remember the many cases of abusive parents of actors children in Hollywood.
well… not offhand.
wait, are we talking about Mama Rose and little Gypsy?
@MikeS:
“the fact Spielberg directed him won’t matter as, unlike the previous actor nominees from Spielberg movies, no one comes close to the acclaim he’s received.”
Ralph Fiennes in Schindler’s List, Whoopi Goldberg in The Color Purple, and to some extent, Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun.
*in the bag
HA! christophe – no, it’s not me (I wish). It’s Peter O’Toole (thought he’d be an appropriate image for the frolics between now and Oscar nite since he never won.)
I don’t know about you people, but I gotta admit I terribly miss the 5-nominee Best Picture category.
This has not happened since the movie Reds back in 1981
And evvvvvvvvverybody loves REDS. lol
Anyway, I’m still not over the Affleck thing. And I wasn’t even rooting for ARGO. I just thought his directing nom was in the bad for months. It’s the shock of it all.
I’m also not getting over that Supporting Actor category. That DeNiro quote explains why. You probably have more actors in that category that couldn’t care less about being nominated. In that actors roundtable Arkin looked like he was waiting for a ride home the whole time. Philip Seymour Hoffman is going to show up to the ceremony in a ketchup stained tee shirt and pajama bottoms. I dunno if I can take this. *feels faint*
I’m so thrilled by the director choices and the shut-outs of Affleck, Hooper, and Bigelow.
I hated Beasts but still, it’s nice to see they’re TRYING to find good in a mediocre and remarkably overpraised year.
Ang Lee’s 2-hour screensaver (my joke, mine!), I can deal with.
Lincoln, the boringest movie of them all, I can deal with.
SLP – awesome!
And Michael Haneke – God love the Academy forever. Just like God love them for showing Malick love last year.
this is horrendous snub of Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty is hands down the best film of the year, that’s simply not fair.
On the contrary i’m happy marion cotillard and ben affleck not being nominated.
Above all it’s shameful to see amour getting nominated for directing and acting and how A SEPARATION last year was robbed off almost in every category, i don’t mind amour getting nominated but it’s so wrong, just because last year the best film came from Iran, it didn’t get its deserving share. This is how miser academy can get. Should be ashamed of itself. Even after nominating A SEPARATION for screenplay, that might be one of the best of the decade they went to award nutcase woody allen for his god awful postcard nonsense film.
@steve50
WRONG! Herding squirrels is actually much more feasible than predicting the Oscars. Also, is that you in your profile pic?
Rymen – I think that is exactly what’s going to happen, too. Predicting anything this year is like herding squirrels. Can’t be done, so you may as well root for the home team.
Apocalypse Pooh:
And Martin Scorsese never won a Best Director when nominated against an actor turned director (losing to Redford and Beatty) until he did (beating Eastwood). Day Lewis gave the most lauded performance this year for an actor, the fact Spielberg directed him won’t matter as, unlike the previous actor nominees from Spielberg movies, no one comes close to the acclaim he’s received.
The Affleck / Bigelow snubs remind me of the year that Ron Howard and Ang Lee were snubbed and their pics, Apollo 13 and Sense and Sensibility, respectively, were nominated for best pic. BTW, a pic with not a single acting nomination won BP and BD that year.
You know what would be funny? If Affleck or Bigelow STILL took home the Critics Choice Award, the Golden Globe AND the DGA. Our guesses would still be undecided for the Oscars.
linc4jess: What about that Keith Simanton from IMDB’s predictions on Gold Derby? Dude had FIFTEEN for Les Mis, including 3 in BSA. Fail city.
Oops… here’s the picture:
http://movieline.com/galleries/national-board-of-review-awards-jessica-chastain-kathryn-bigelow-meredith-vieira-f-bombs/#jp-carousel-184059
@Jim
See the picture below, that kid was totally “abused” and she obviously resents her director for the awful experience. If I were a little girl I would be so sad to be offered fancy clothes and handbags to walk the red carpet, just hate it.
@linc4jess
I puked a little in my mouth, but I think you’re totally right.
@Christopher No kidding. A lot of kids dream to go sit at the Oscars with all the famous actors and actresses….I don’t want to hear it!
Someboy needs to see If tom o’neil is ok over at goldderby. No splits with affleck or bigelow. I predict a lincoln sweep.
No actor has ever won an oscar for a performance in a Spielberg film. Not one. Ever. Not saying Daniel Day Lewis won’t. Just tossing out some trivia. And yeah, I think Lincoln is vulnerable to Harvey and SLP.
@Jim
lol! exactly my feeling. How many kids would dream to be in a movie? Let alone be nominated at the oscars…
I’m still asking the academy whyyyy oh whyy the Affleck and Bigelow snub?
Both were great films, great direction, for weeks they were locks, guaranteed.
But what about The Dark Knight rises ? nothing there.
Diane warren wrote a great tune for SLP – snubbed in songwriting.
Interesting that The Master is in the game.
Anyway ,as a Les Mis fan, I’m hoping the Academy reward Hugh
@Fabinho
The voting system is screwed, it encourages voters to push perceived locked frontrunners further down their ballots in order to support outsiders. And more often than not outsiders end up being nominated at the expense of frontrunners, and voters are then deeply regretful of their choices. Happens every year!
That’s why I think the Academy should switch to a preferential points system (#1 = 5 pts, #2 = 4 pts, etc) that gives voters the chance to support both outsiders and frontrunners, if they liked them equally.
Small point, but feel the need to set the record straight: Tom Hanks was nominated for BA for SPR.
Gotta admit this is rather unpredictable and really exciting. So many categories are wide open.
I wish someone would abuse me by making me stand in from of a camera and put me in a feature film. 🙂
Ryan, that would be the “shock”. Kudos to the Academy. They have people talking.
Hey guys. Did you hear that Sasha Stone, Oprah Winfrey and Susan Sarandon support child labor. I don’t know, I think someone should bring it up. Over and over again.
Shut up, Michelle.
One possible theory to explain all that shit this morning: The Academy wants Lincoln winning and eliminated the strongers contenders (I say Affleck and PTA).
By the way, “The Horror… The Horror…”
Can we talk about Roger Deakins’s TENTH(!!!) Oscar nomination for a moment? How is it that the guy hasn’t won a single one yet? And more importantly, could this be his year since there’s not a clear frontrunner for BP? His cinematography was the thing that made Skyfall for me (well that and Dame Judi). It was so beautifully shot. Just amazing.
Life of pi was over nominated and zero dark thirty under nominated
@Tero
I’m afraid so. Every year, some try to undermine the frontrunner and refuse the undeniability of its win but more often than not the frontrunner wins. Lincoln has everything: Most noms, Dir/Writing noms, broad support across the board: actors, technicians, arts & craft. As mush as it bothers me, I’d better make peace with this idea now.
Looking back, after DGAs were announced literally a half hour later Harvey gave exclusive to Deadline touting SLP’s massive expansion over MLK Jr. holiday weekend. He expected film to get 100M. Looked kind of crazy at the time but alas, he knew what was up long before we did. 🙂
Critics and Academy voters often value different things. People actually involved in the craft of filmmaking would have a deeper appreciation for a film like SLP. Critics on the other hand seem to put more value on things like the supposed weight or social significance of a film. Obviously this overlaps but a performance oriented movie like SLP was likely to get more love form the Academy than from critics, who while giving it favorable reviews would focus on the type of movie it was and not on how well it pulled it off. SLP is actually the most interesting movie I saw recently.
The acting categories were tough because there were only five slots. You knew someone would be left off that was deserving of recognition. Hawkes lost out in a tough best actor category. Cotillard lost out in the best actress category. I think it was easier to leave off Cotillard because she recently won. But among the actors someone was gettin shafted. Cooper being left off would have stunk too.
I think the same thing may have happened with Bigelow as happened with Cotillard. It’s easier to get left off when you already have an Oscar in the bank.
The Wallis nomination is a travesty, but it was a predictable travesty. You had the Whale Rider equation all over again. People work there whole lives at their craft and a child who was six when the movie filmed gets a nomination. On the bright side Wallis replaces Castle-Hughes as the least deserving nominee ever. I’m sure her career will go just as swimmingly.
It’s like I’ve been saying for a long time: almost everytime a director WINS the Oscar in a very praised way, this director WILL BE snubbed in his next project.
SEE:
Kathryn Bigelow: WON for The Hurt Locker (2009) – SNUBBED for Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Tom Hooper: WON for The King’s Speech (2010) – SNUBBED for Les Misérables
Danny Boyle: WON for Slumdog Millionaire (2008) – SNUBBED for 127 Hours (2010)
Martin Scorsese: WON for The Departed (2006) – SNUBBED for Shutter Island (2010)
Ang Lee: WON for Brokeback Mountain (2005) – SNUBBED for Lust, Caution (2007)
Peter Jackson: WON for LOTR III (2003) – SNUBBED for King Kong (2005)
Roman Polanski: WON for The Pianist (2002) – Snubbed everytime since
On the other hand, I myself count 4 times Marion Cotillard and Leonardo DiCaprio SHOULD have been nominated and were completely snubbed (Public Enemies, Nine, Inception, Midnight in Paris and now RUST AND BONE and, for him, Revolutionary Road, Inception/Shutter Island, J. Edgar and now DJANGO UNCHAINED). No doubt they are top actors in the industry and surely will have a better chance next year, respectevely, for NIGHTINGALE and THE GREAT GATSBY/THE WOLF OF WALL STREET.
Sad about the unfair snubbs I witnessed this morning, to which I add Ben Affleck’s and John Hawkes’.
Shit…
The Academy put shit on our faces today…
unlikely hood,
I think they both were doing all right if not great even though it was a bit too short a time really to tell. I find Emma lovely and natural. Her male co-host, though, may need to get a bit more polished up with timing, in my opinion. That said, they had chemistry. Just saying.

Anyway, it’s a pleasant surprise that, understandably, despite a lack of lead actor nomination for Life of Pi, the voters really show Buckingham-Nicks-like big big love to the film. I wouldn’t be surprised if Life of Pi turns out to be the so-called dark horse for the BP win even though Lincoln and Silver Linings seem to have slight advantage in acting department. [Just thinking out loud while digitally eating socks for my own so-called BD-lock blunder a la the great four: Spielberg, Bigelow, Affleck and Lee.] : )
@danemychal
Tom Hanks was nominated for Best Actor in SPR. Just FYI.
Yeah, the acting support comparisons with SLP and Lincoln are not valid as Lincoln still has 3 and better shot at WINNING in all of them than SLP which has Actress as the strong one and where Lincoln is absent. Life of Pi, maybe, but we’ll see about that. The Master also has three actors in, no BP nomination even, so what do these actors really want to say?
I say SLP has a slight chance of spoiling, but the game is now between Lincoln and Life of Pi and the latter seems to be the tech film of the year.
Lincoln wins 6-8 Oscars. That will happen.
Hardly a comparison, PaulH. There were probably 20 X the number of speaking parts in Avatar as in Pi, set in totally different narratives. I don’t see anything hypocritical (and I enjoyed Avatar very much at the time, I’m not ashamed to admit, and it was a milestone that set the stage for Pi. Even Cameron is a Pi supporter).
Hahaha, that was what was missing, hysteria!…
In many countries the child labor, child exploitation and child abuse are tumors that a society must to fight for. In Latin America many children are exploited by their parents, and all who are against child labor, child exploitation and child abuse we have achieved that the oligarchy signed laws against these tumors, and to respect the agreements on Rights of Children.
And the lifelong memories of her global adoration that you talk is merely the excuse for child labor, and child labor automatically brings with it the child exploitation and abuse.
Just I hope that if there is a little chivalry on you may show my comment.
Thanks.
child labor automatically brings with it the child exploitation and abuse.
No it does not.
And standing in front of a movie camera for a few hours a day is hardly what any sane person would call “labor.” It’s virtually the same level of “labor” as a child being encouraged (and often forced) to take piano lessons or sign up for little league softball.
Statements like that show you have no sense of perspective. You’re saying any activity where kids participate that adults enable or encourage must automatically be abuse if anybody makes any money off of it? Ridiculous.
I suppose you think no grownups ever see a nickel of financial benefit from the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on kids’ involvement in sports.
And all those poor exploited kids playing in sports are automatically being abused by their lazy parents so that all the oligarchical grownups can get rich.
(by the way, kids — all you kids who play in sports or take music lessons — I sure hope you never feel any pressure to do well in your endeavors and I hope you never worry about making your parents feel proud of your achievements. Because that would “automatically” cause irreparable psychological damage!)
@PaulH
Because Life of Pi is actually a good inspiring and thought-provoking movie whereas Avatar was just a bunch of boom-booms and advanced cgi.
Probably the second biggest post of the year after Oscar night.
last year’s Oscar nomination announcement got 445 comments over a span of 2 days
today’s announcement has 555 comments in 5 hours.
I agree with mel. Yes, SPR had great acting, but no nominations at all. Actors probably looked at that and said “Huh, this movie doesn’t really celebrate us at all.” Lincoln is actually an actors movie. And as good as cast as SPR had, Lincoln’s is chock full of veterans and heavyweights, SEVEN of which (off the top of my head) have been nominated for or won an Oscar. No other cast can boast that. It’s definitely going to receive some love from the acting branch.
unlikely hood – yes- I liked the Seth-Emma bits. I think he’s going to do a great job hosting.
If Life of Pi wins BP, Steve, with no acting nominations, how hypocritical will that be when Avatar, the most popular film of all time, with no acting nominations wound up relegated with 3 nothing to write home about techs?
I wished CLoud Atlas was in Art Direction, Music, Costume Design and FX.
LOLOL Michelle is just pissing all over this thread. Probably the second biggest post of the year after Oscar night.
I think it’s time for Fox to issue a Richard Parker toy line.
I have no idea if SLP is the frontrunner based on actor support. However, comparisons between that film and the triumph of SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE are not well founded. The earlier film was as much a show business satire as a romantic comedy. Hollywood loves films about the business. It also boasted a screenplay co-written by the great Tom Stoppard. The only comparison that may hold up is that another young and talented leading lady may take home the Oscar for best Actress.
Also, the LINCOLN is boring rant is getting, well, boring. The film’s remarkable box office just makes this argument foolish.
Apocalypse Pooh: Lincoln has three acting nominations. Saving Private Ryan had none. The comparison is not valid. Lincoln has as much acting support as Silver Linings Playbook, it just didn’t have anyone to be nominated for in Lead Actress category.
Please let have SLP have an “Up in the Air” night and I will forgive AMPAS for the Affleck snub.
I just love the Silver Linings love all over! Since It was my 2nd Best Pic next to Argo, and we all know now the shocking exclusion of Ben, I don’t mind SLP winning Best Pic! Or Life of PI! Anything but Steven “Overrated” Speilberg’s “Lincoln”. People are taking about how “Les Mis” and “Leonardo Di Caprio” screaming for Oscars, but they don’t consider “Lincoln” a biopic is also screaming for Oscars too!
(now that I’ve had time to digest what happened this morning)
The unexpected thrills:
– Life of Pi scooping up 11 well-earned nominations
– Emmanuelle Riva & Quevenzhane Wallis in Best Actress
– Joaquin Phoenix overcoming his own bad judgement
– Beasts of the Southern Wild and Amour doing the impossible in such a heavy year
– War Witch
The shocks:
– Bigelow and Affleck omitted from the best director – I don’t get it, but happy for Haneke and Zeitlan
– Paul Thomas Anderson and The Master unrecognized outside of the acting categories
It would appear that Lincoln has this in a cakewalk, but I’m not so sure. TWC will now push Silver Linings Playbook like never before, now that Django and The Master are either hobbled or by the wayside. It’s Saving Private Ryan and Sahespeare In Love, redux. The difference, though, this time – there is a stealthy, well-loved, financially successful and technically brilliant alternative right in the middle of the fray, which wasn’t the case last time. Does Oscar want to go heavy with Lincoln or lite with SLP? Or maybe something else, something magical?
The battle between the frontrunners frantically begins while the wounded try and wipe off the surprise and re-group.
Richard Parker calmly waits.
@Ryman
The Dark Knight Rises didn’t get SO much hate. It just wasn’t good— Enough to surpass the greatness of The Dark Knight…
Michelle, None of your frantic slander about the family of Quvenzhané Wallis is ever going to show up on this page.
I should probably just say that all your crazed accusations are unfounded, but I’d rather say that you’re full of shit.
On a lighter note, what did you guys think of the Seth-Emma banter? I liked it. Not all zingers but I like the effort to spice up the annual over-formal announcement. More please.
For keifer and all the idiots crying foul on a Sound nom for “Lincoln”. Those are voted on by the peers in his branch. The CAS also recognized him, so you should not be surprised. And here is a great piece from NPR showing the specific pains he went through for authentic sounds from the life of Lincoln. LITERALLY authentic. In short, well-deserved, you dopes.
http://m.npr.org/news/Arts+%26+Life/164716611
I personally think Arkin and Hoffman gave better supporting performances than DiCaprio; McGregor (not nominated) gave better supporting performance than DiCaprio… Though I personally think that DiCaprio gave better supporting performance than DeNiro… Waltz should share lead with Foxx… Jones is an automatic nominee as John Williams in Score…
It’s such a shock Bigelow and Affleck didn’t make the cut. Steven Spielberg is now on his way to win his third Directing Oscar. Without those two Spielberg doesn’t have any competition. Boohoo! Lincoln will win Best Picture and Best Director. Another shock is John Hawkes not gettin in. Phoenix grabbed his spot. So sad. Another boohoo. Finally, the Academy just ruined Sally Field’s perfect record. They nominated her but I know for sure Anne Hathaway will win BSA. Boohoo!
WOO HOO Beasts got IN! Denzel got IN! I’m happy.
I wonder if online voting had any effect on the outcome of nominations this year.
I’m so happy for Amour & Silver Linings! Wow…lots of surprises. I think ZDT’s chances have sunk with Bigelow’s snub. I’m not complaining. This leaves room for more worthy films to win the big prize. Silver Linings definitely got a huge boost. Awesome nominees overall.
Affleck not nominated and Zaitlin and his film in?! ABSURD
“With that much lover for Silver Linings Playbook by the acting branch in the nominations, that spells HUGE trouble for Lincoln for Best Picture, the same exact reason why Saving Private Ryan lost in 1998.”
@Apocalypse Pooh, Lincoln also has strong actor support (this is not like Saving Private Ryan):
Daniel Day-Lewis has a batter chance of winning than Bradley Cooper.
Tommy Lee Jones has a better chance of winning than Robert De Niro.
Sally Field has a better chance of winning than Jacki Weaver.
And Daniel Day-Lewis is a lock for the win, whereas Jennifer Lawrence has about the same frontrunner status as Tommy Lee Jones.
Bradley Cooper started his Oscar campaign on NBC Today the best way: “Ben Affleck got robbed!!!” I’m sure many Academy members will actually agree with him.
@RYMAN
Do you not know who Michael Haneke is? Director of Amour as well as arguably the most consistent non-American director of the past 20 years. This alone should give you faith in Amour without having seen it. Knowing what its about and THEN knowing that Haneke directed it should clue you in to the fact that its NOT your typical old people in love scenario. Its an instant classic along the lines of Ingmar Bergman. Haneke also directed The White Ribbon, Cache, The Piano Teacher, etc. Two wins in a row at Cannes, by the way.
LOL
“I am very pleased that the Academy has chosen to honor the many individuals who were a part of ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’ ” — Robert De Niro
Love him
When was the last time a film was nominated in all 4 acting category slots (or make that 8 top categories? SLP impressed getting noms in what I consider 8 of the top tier categories (Pic, Dir, Writing, Edit, Actor/Actress, Supp Actor/Actress). With Bigelow out of the pic, I hope Pi becomes the alternative to Lincoln. With Pi, I got the breadth/big picture that Lincoln aspired to and emotional satisfaction that SLP offered.
I REALLY wish The Dark Knight Rises was nominated for something. Why did that film get SO much hate? I don’t get it.
For the trivia people: Remember to add MY MAN GODFREY (1936) to your list of films nominated for all four acting awards; it’s also the only one not nominated for Best Picture.
ACTOR — William Powell {“Godfrey Parks”}
ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE — Mischa Auer {“Carlo”}
ACTRESS — Carole Lombard {“Irene Bullock”}
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE — Alice Brady {“Angelica Bullock”}
And, Cory – Include Helen Hayes in your Rainer-Leigh-Swank 2-for-2 stats; hers were in two different categories, so often she’s not included, but if we’re talking about Sally Field staying at 100% if she wins this year for supporting, Helen Hayes should be included in the stat.
Love reading everyone’s reactions to the nominations; keep ’em coming.
it may have already been mentioned
(forgive me for not reading all 500 plus comments)
but the elephant in this Oscar room is
(and he’s physically almost one himself)
Mr. HARVEY WEINSTEIN.
who else could glad-hand and pressure the Academy
in such a way to achieve such a victory for
SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK? his ability to play AMPAS
like a fine-tuned piano is astonishing.
he’s why there are so many Miramax and Weinstein films
with SO MANY OSCARS.
he wasn’t going to let SILVER fade from their
memories. hence the 4 acting slots and Russell’s ability
to edge out Affleck and Bigelow and Hooper.
MEL:
The individual branches make the nominations, but then the entire Academy votes for the winners. The acting branch is the largest voting block in the Academy by an almost expoential amount. With that much lover for Silver Linings Playbook by the acting branch in the nominations, that spells HUGE trouble for Lincoln for Best Picture, the same exact reason why Saving Private Ryan lost in 1998.
I see Lincoln winning the same awards as The King’s Speech. I see Life of Pi following in the footsteps of Benjamin Button, Avatar, Inception and Hugo with a satchel full of tech/art awards. SLP, Les Miz, ZDT and Amour pick up one or two each. Django goes home empty-handed. Not sure about Argo. However, more shall be perceived in the coming weeks.
I could see SLP winning as a lot of #2 and #3 on the ballot. I think a lot of the non-BD nominees (ZDT, argo, etc) are going to get good amts of #1 and with Lincoln as the real front runner, nobody knows who the real dark horse is. SLP is a likeable actors movie and clearly Russell has a lot of love in the Academy. Let’s hope it wins!
@ Aaron The cruelest snubs are not those of Bigelow or Affleck, both of whom have already won Oscars and are nominated as producers this year. The CRUELEST snub is that of DiCaprio – he’s never won, despite great performances, including in “Django,” and they nominated Waltz (who’s lead) over him. These bastards couldn’t find it in their hearts to nominate Leo over 1 of 5 guys who already won – 3 of whom have won in the last 10 years. Don’t tell me Arkin or DeNiro gave better performances. (Christ, at least they nominate Peter O’Toole.)
Here’s something to chew on. Wallis is 9 years old now, IIRC. She was 6 when Beasts was filmed. So picking nits, Beasts is a 2009 movie. Should that have been taken into consideration for its eligibility? It sat around for 3 years, then, without a distributor. Should the year a movie was made be a factor??
Should the year a movie was made be a factor??
No
I know, I know. You are wondering whether I was sexually abused as a child or not. But in the meanwhile, Twitter has the news:
@Michael_Haneke
yaaaaay my film amour jst got nominaytid for five oscars!!1! must practice my surprised fays 4 wen i wins them all lol #teamhaneke
@benaffleck thanx 4 lendin me ur oscar nominayshun 4 best director!!1! i guess daredevil 2 mite happen aftr all lol #teamhaneke
@kfc_colonel do u give a discount 4 ppl wot get five oscar nominayshuns lol
Happy to see Skyfall, The Hobbit and The Avengers take the spots that might have gone to The Dark Knight Rises. I liked them all way better.
Jacki Weaver: one of the most undeserved nominations in the history of the Academy
Jacki Weaver in Animal Kingdom: excellent, at least 4th place that year
Well, some redemption from Oscar. Bravo for Wallis and Riva! The oldest and the youngest! Shame for leaving out Henry, but bravo again for Zeitlin for Direction and writing! Two out of three ani’t bad, as Meatloaf said.
Wow, the Best Director category is a travesty. No Hooper? No Affleck? and yet Russell, Zeitlin, and Haneke get in? Spielberg is now the easy choice.
@ Nick V
Let me clarify something about what you quoted from me. I am a huge fan of Phoenix and his performance is one of the best this year IMHO. I have nothing against it. However, between him and DDL, I want DDL to win. I have to choose one. That simple. Because to me he is THE BEST of the year. If Phoenix is the winner, though, I will be glad too.
Top Ten BIGGEST Oscar nomination shockers of 2012
10. The Exclusion of Sci-Fi Films
Reason: Only one nominee for The Avengers and Prometheus and The Dark Knight Rises, Cloud Atlas and Looper were all SNUBBED. Come on Oscars!
Good or bad: VERY BAD
9. The Master’s SLIGHT comeback
Reason: I knew Philip Seymour Hoffman would get the nomination, but when I saw Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams names listed, that made it more worthwhile. Too bad Harvey couldn’t score P.T Anderson a nomination. 🙁
Good or bad: GOOD
8. The Perks of Being a Wallflower’s screenplay snub
Reason: Knowing it was gaining momentum with the Writers Guild and Critics Choice nomination, I thought it had a really good chance. Apparently not.
Good or bad: BAD
7. Flight’s screenplay nomination
Reason: I know it did get other nominations as well, but I seriously thought it couldn’t get past The Master or Looper. Well done, John Gatins.
Good or bad: GOOD
6. The Pirates! Band of Misfits scoring a Best Animated Feature nomination
Reason: Over Rise of the Guardians and Hotel Transylvania. That left me quite baffled knowing it came out REALLY early in 2012. What a comeback. Still want Wreck-It Ralph to take all.
Good or bad: EH…
5. Amour’s BIGGER list of nominations than anticipated
Reason: At first, it REALLY seemed it would only get a Best Foreign Film nomination and nothing else. All the sudden… BAM! Not only did it get the foreign nomination, but also Best Screenplay, Picture, even Director! We’ll get to directors later, but now I HAVE to see this movie. Too bad foreign films are hard to find in America these days.
Good or bad: Probably BAD knowing the premise of the film.
4. Our Oscar host Seth MacFarlane got an Oscar nomination!
Reason: No joke! The opening song for the movie Ted got an Oscar nomination, and our Oscar host, Seth MacFarlane who is known for doing shows like Family Guy and American Dad got nominated! Not only that, but he was also READING the nominations to the press as well. First time EVER (and probably ONLY time ever) where you have the HOST read the nominations and also get nominated as well. He must’ve charmed the pants off the Academy to make that one happen. You’re officially apart of Oscar history, Seth! 2012 was definitely your best year.
Good or bad: PRETTY GOOD
3. Silver Linings Playbook scoring EVERY acting category.
Reason: This has not happened since the movie Reds back in 1981 was able to do that same thing. Over thirty years, and now a film FINALLY managed to repeat that accomplishment, and it couldn’t have been a better one. It was pretty much when Jacki Weaver’s name was called out that it made me guess, is it truly possible for this to happen? AND IT DID! Among all directors to cast one of the best ensembles of the decade (aside from The Social Network by David Fincher), David O. Russell was the man to do it, and for that he also got a Writing and Directing nomination as a reward. Of course then again, Harvey Weinstein did produce the film. Thankfully, he picked GREAT films this year to campaign to the Oscars. Well done!
Good or bad: VERY GOOD
2. Beasts of the Southern Wild DOMINATING!
Reason: If you thought Amour’s nominations were shocking, think of Beasts for a sec. At least Amour KNEW it had a nomination for Best Foreign Film. Beasts on the other hand was campaigning blindfolded, and this SMALL and CHEAP indie film only had love from the critics and not the guilds personally. All the sudden… BAM!!!! Best Adapted Screenplay! Best Picture! Best Director! Even nine year old Quvenzhane Wallis scored herself a LEAD actress nomination! The youngest EVER to be nominated in that category. Good for her and Benh Zeitlin. I wish it could’ve been nominated for Best Score and Supporting Actor (Dwight Henry), but if it got THOSE other categories, I’m sure fans of the movie like myself don’t mind. 😀
Good or bad: FANTASTIC!!!!
1. The Best Director Category
Reason: I REALLY don’t know what to say to this. I’m happy for O. Russell and Zeitlin, but our two TOP frontrunners Kathryn Bigelow and Ben Affleck were SNUBBED! I seriously don’t know who’s going to win Best Director now. Hopefully Spielberg since he is my favorite and managed to score every other nomination (except the BAFTAs), but STILL! Bigelow and Affleck were DOMINATING the critic awards for Best Director, and the Academy pretty much said “You guys already won your awards, we’re giving someone else another chance”. Hopefully that was ONLY for the Directing category and not the film itself. If that’s not the case, then Argo’s and Zero Dark Thirty’s chances at Best Picture have gone WAY down. I’m still amazed that Benh Zeitlin managed to get in over AFFLECK and BIGELOW! There’s your jaw-dropping Oscar nom moment of the decade folks. It shows that ANYTHING is possible and that not always can the guild awards back it up. Now Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee have become the frontrunners. Who will win this category now, and could it have a big connection to which film wins Best Picture? I seriously don’t know at this point.
Good or bad: GOOD for O. Russell and Zeitlin, BAD for Affleck and Bigelow.
“Michelle” or Billy Bob or whatever your name is: No. It’s not child exploitation. I guess you’re just an internet troll trying to provoke. Either that or you actually don’t know anything about feature film production, child labour and/or child exploitation.
“Beasts of the Southern Wild” was made outside guild regulations so there were no controls over how the actors were used (and I wonder about the animals used in the filming as well – did the ASPCA monitor the production?). Wallis may well have been exposed to hazardous conditions and encouraged to engage in dangerous activities. I assume that Michelle is trying to point out that anytime union regulations are bypassed it constitutes exploitation…
I assume that Michelle is trying to point out that anytime union regulations are bypassed it constitutes exploitation…
if that’s what she’s pointing out then the point fails. because the mere absence of union oversight does NOT constitute exploitation.
as long as Michelle is indulging in wild speculation, I’ll go out on a pretty sturdy limb and say that I’m confident Quvenzhané Wallis enjoys a more safe, secure, beautiful, happy life surrounded by more loving, caring adults than approximately 50 million other American kids this morning.
Michelle, How many million kids in Chile do you estimate are having a rougher childhood experience today than Quvenzhané Wallis is having?
Why don’t you step away from your keyboard a minute and see what you can do for some of the kids in your own backyard before you wet yourself with further hysterical hand-wringing about a child who’s almost certainly got a fabulous life ahead of her — a child who now has the immense pleasure of lifelong memories of her global adoration, a child who will now know for the rest of her life that she helped create a greater work of art at age 5 than 5 billion other people on this planet can ever dream of doing.
Or you can continue to hallucinate about imaginary psychological damage that you pull from the depths of your overreacting ass.
Contender tracker is wrong – SCORE – ARGO not Cloud Atlas
The incredibly convoluted voting system is the reason why we’re getting such weird noms and snubs. Voters shouldn’t have to kick themselves into ranking their picks knowing only one of them will get their support. A preferential points system would be much better (#1 = 5 points, #2 = 4 points, etc.) since every pick would get a little smth and voters would be truly encouraged to fill their ballots completely.
Child psychiatry experts know the damage that caused a child to be away from her or his child rutine to star work. The damage of being judged for director, writers, actors, even if there is a supposed child protector. The damage to work in his or her childhood to support the household expenses. The damage to feel if only acting very well her or his mother, or father to love her or his, but she or he acting bad she or he might feel may lose the love of own parents.
This is child exploitation and I don’t understand how you support the wrong feelings a child might feel, support a child is a money, support a child may be your object to enter the showbusiness, support lazy parents who need own child work to support them.
but she or he acting bad she or he might feel may lose the love of own parents.
oh. the same concern of every child everywhere forever
Leo getting screwed YET AGAIN just so that they can have their “They have won before!” crap is not only unfair but also just plain wrong. Who stole the scene in the entire movie? Who of all the actors this years just screams Oscar Nomination?! Leo, Leo and Leo again. WTF happened there? I knew it as soon as they showed Christoph Waltz it was so over. I really don’t know if DiCaprio will ever win an Oscar. He’s really starting to look like Peter O’Toole and it’s PATHETIC. Bunch of losers and one timers like Jamie Foxx, Jean Dujardin and Roberto Benigni have won the Oscar and Leo gets overlooked year and year again. And I am the first to admit that I disliked his work in Revolutionary Road and in J. Edgar and yet he should have gotten it this year. Such BS! 🙁 ((((((((
In other news, now that David O. Russell is officially a prestigious artist – if Oscars had only recognized The Fighter, he might have lingered closer to the Todd Solodnz margins – I hope he goes back to making films like Three Kings and Flirting With Disaster. I think someone in a Spielberg film (that lost to Harvey) said it, David:
“Earn this.”
Amour clearly has a tremedous amount of support here — Foreign Film AND Picture? Director, writing, actress. This is almost unprecedented for a foreign film. I can totally see Emmanuelle Riva winning.
There’s no doubt that Jennifer Lawrence is one of the front runners, and I love her, but I thought Bradley Cooper was the revelation in that movie.
Ah rufus, 2002 had the best film of that decade with Todd Haynes’ FAR FROM HEAVEN.
Oh wait, 2002 was just as horrid.
Paddy, I am with you lock, stock and barrel on the exceedingly beautiful LIFE OF PI.
I love LINCOLN quite a bit, but my rooting interest in the Best Picture category is LIFE OF PI, and then LES MISERABLES.
But LINCOLN is a great film and it’s winning poses no problem at all.
The Bigelow snub casts a pall on an otherwise exciting list!
I would be THRILLED if SLP wins BP and BD and BAS. One of the only movies that moved me this year. Unstoppably manic, extremely affecting, totally honest, and a movie I ENJOYED watching. I do not understand the hate – it is an A+.
Lincoln was treacly, preachy, and frankly boring, and if it wasn’t about ‘Lincoln’ no one would give it the time of day – as a piece of cinema it can’t stand alone.
Lincoln will win Best Picture, unless you think Silver Linings has anything related to a shot, or that 1989 will happen again for either Argo or Zero Dark Thirty (i.e. BP win with no BD nom). I just can’t believe there is no Affleck or Bigelow.
As much as I liked Hunt, it’s a shame she’s competing for an Oscar and Hawkes is not. Talk about a crowded lead acting category, and that WITHOUT Waltz and Hoffman who got promoted for supporting.
SLP first film to get acting nominations in all four categories since Reds in 1981.
Skyfall gets first Bond song nom since For Your Eyes Only in 1981.
Only 4 first-time nominees for acting, the fewest ever. Compare to 15 first-timers in 1995, and 14 in 1996.
Sally Field has a chance to keep her 100% track record. If she doesn’t win, she’ll leave the Rainer-Leigh-Swank 2-for-2 club.
Amy Adams and Philip Seymour Hoffman each get their fourth nomination in eight years. Watch out Jack Nicholson/Meryl Streep?
Denzel gets 6th nomination over 4 decades, DDL his 5th in the same timeframe. De Niro now on #7 in 5 decades (but no nom in the ’00s), and Field #3 in 5 decades (no noms in ’90s, ’00s). And Alan Arkin gets #4, 46 years after his first (biggest gap for an actor– K Hepburn highest with 48 years).
It’s most likely going to play out that Spielberg*, Day-Lewis, and Field will all win their third Oscars for “Lincoln”
*Directing.
No nomination for Ann Dowd. that’s bs!!!!!!!!!!!
The last film to win an Best Picture Oscar without a Best Director nomination is Driving Miss Daisy. That has been repeated so many times on this site. Definitely makes it harder for Argo or Zero Dark Thirty to win now.
Interesting to note that the last film to win a Best Picture Oscar without its director getting nominated for the DGA award…. is Driving Miss Daisy as well. So to the SLP haters, you also have this to hold on to. LOL
One good thing for Lincoln. Of the big three films (Lincoln, SLP, Life of Pi) contending for Best Pic, it will be the highest ranked on critics top ten site
http://criticstop10.com/
With Lincoln at #5
SLP at #8
Life of Pi at #13
even if you throw in the Best Director movies…
Beast of the Southern Wild at #6
Amour at #9
…it still wins out.
So the trend will likely be true 6 out 7 years since Crash won.
If you look over that site, this is the “worst” slate of Best Directors ever as none of the top 4 movies got a nomination.
I have never typed the following: rufussondheim is the voice of reason here people. Michelle may have put it indelicately, but many of you – like Squasher88 – are embarrassing yourself with your purely reactionary vitriol.
PEOPLE: Stop emulating Fox News, stop shooting the messenger and deal with the message.
I mean you do know who Jackie Coogan was right? If you had been commenting on a message board after Chaplin’s “The Kid” came out, would you have said SHUT THE FUCK UP CHAPLIN IS GOD YOU DON’T KNOW SHIT WOMAN?
Cause that would make you look silly.
The message is not that truly independent no-budget films (like, say, the first Paranormal Activity) shouldn’t hire child actors. And they would never get SAG to return their phone calls. The message is that they should have to check in with their state government and make sure they’re not violating state laws. Ask for a cop to come to the set every day, if possible. That’s as much as we can do right now. For all we know Beasts did that.
But some of you know-nothing knee-jerks…are jerks.
There is no two way or three way fight. Lincoln has just become the heavyweight. Everyone else is merely out of their weight class. It has all of the major indicating nominations to sweep. We can talk about a two way or three way fight if Lincoln somehow doesn’t win any of its many guild, globe, etc awards before the Oscars.
Lot of people saying Silver Linings Playbook is going to win because of strong actor support. But keep in mind that Lincoln also has strong actor support:
Daniel Day-Lewis has a batter chance of winning than Bradley Cooper.
Tommy Lee Jones has a better chance of winning than Robert De Niro.
Sally Field has a better chance of winning than Jacki Weaver.
And Daniel Day-Lewis is a lock for the win, whereas Jennifer Lawrence has about the same frontrunner status as Tommy Lee Jones.
Lincoln will procure these votes.
I would love an explanation on why she’s focusing on Beasts only when how many kids were in Les Mis?
I can’t see Lincoln winning this. I have a feeling it has the Gangs of New York and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Oscar-destiny. Strong support was enough for nominations but they won’t want it to win.
I think Life of Pi is the one to beat this year. It has a very strong GG and BAFTA support. And I have a feeling that the GG and BAFTA will go for it. I see a kind of Slumdog Millionaire story here. Ang Lee is the only director who got a DGA, BAFTA, GG nom among the Oscar nominated directors this year. He will get it. And the strong support from the technical branches can work for the movie as well. Of course you can say it’s not nominated for acting. But were The Return of the King and Slumdog nominated? No. You can get a lot of Oscars without any acting nominations.
On the other hand I have a feeling that Silver Linings will do well at the Globes. So it will be a major threat, and it has the acting nominations so it has the support from the acting branch. And of course from Harvey. So I think it will be between Life of Pi and SLP.
I just can’t see Lincoln winning. But maybe I’m wrong.
Andor from Hungary
*Now I’m worried with the BActor line up, though. Phoenix is the only one who can take the cake from DDL. I worry…*
This is just the kind of reasoning I will never fathom. If you think Phoenix gave a great performance and deserves to win then by all mean shout it from some mountain. If you think Day Lewis gave a bad performance in Lincoln so be it and shout that out all over the place as well. But why is it we in our society feel the need to punish someone for excelling? It seems to me that in our society we just love to build people up and then tear them down and then use someone else to do it. Phoenix gave a damn good performance acknowledge that and don’t use it as a spoiler. It’s like the critic [can’t remember his name right now] who was running around going “anyone but Spielberg” it’s just so High School.
Perhaps, Michelle, you should give a reasoned explanation for your claims. The haters will still hate, but at least you might get some support.
Lol! There are still ads for The Intouchables being run on AD. This is sad… just sad.
Even with my three fave contenders rudely getting shut out of the Best Director race I should be happy that two of their replacements were Zeitlin and Haneke, two people who were artistically ambitious in their efforts.
Last year we had The Tree of Life, and this year we get two films that were artistically ambitious and commercially limited getting Best Pic and Best Director nominations. This is a good thing.
In fact, right now i’m deeply disturbed that Bigelow got snubbed
Michelle needs to STFU and get the hell outta here. She doesn’t know a damn thing.
This is not a two way fight between SLP and Lincoln. It is a three way fight including Life of Pi. The only reason people dismiss the Pi is because it did not receive as many noms in the major categories, but how could it be expected to? Best supporting actor for the Tiger? The film was all about the incredible visuals and the story as a whole. SLP was based on four key characters, and guess what they all got a nom for acting. They are very different films, and if SLP is a challenger to Lincoln, then so is Pi. Still Lincoln’s to lose though.
Apocalypse Pooh: Does not follow. The Master got three acting nominations and was shut out of everything else. Up in the Air had the most acting nominations and won nothing.
This is the last time I try to write here. I said Wallis’s nomination is child exploitation, is child labor and child abuse. I said the people violates this rule are criminal for Righst of Children. But I have only received highly misonystic insults, ordinary men to discredit a woman, she is mad. But worse, you don’t gave me the opportunity to defend myself. I’ve been teased and censorship, sexim and misogyny to aim a real and concret fact…Child exploitation
People forget that Beasts was made outside of SAG, so those there was no one on set to ensure all of the child labor laws were being followed, so don’t assume they were. Because you know for damn sure no one from the government was there inspecting them on a daily basis.
Michelle might be a bit loony, but she might also be correct.
“My best joke of the year so far, and it gets censored. Boo”
It was tasteless and offensive to anyone who really did suffer abuse.
Very happy they showed a lot of love towards Life of Pi because it’s a film I keep coming back to as one of my favorites of the year.
Very shocked they showed little love towards Zero Dark Thirty and Argo. No directing nod for either Affleck or Bigelow? WTF!!!!!!!!!!
You might as well just call it now because nothing is taking down Kushner, Spielberg, DDL, the entire Lincoln train. Every other movie is standing on the tracks with the Lincoln train coming through and I don’t really have a problem with it either lol.
All the acting nods for Silver Linings Playbook are a big, big tip off. Actors are the largest voting block in the Academy by far. Spileberg may win director (and I’m not confident he will), but I think with all the acting love for Silver Linings Playbook, SLP has to be the front runner for Best Picture, maybe Best Director, too.
It’s over, people. Lincoln is going all the way. Many nominations. Many wins. Not that I have any problem with that.
Nic V: I agree, there were really no surprised in the acting categories this year. No out of nowhere nominations like Demian Bichir, Michael Shannon, and the biggest surprise for me in recent years, Tommy Lee Jones for In the Valley of Elah.
Note: havent both Broadcast News and As Good As It Gets got nominated in all 4 acting categories?
Personal reactions:
1. Directing slot is a shocker, not because the choises are unworthy of recognition, per-se, but because they have left out superior achievements, what with Affleck, Bigelow and Tarantino being shut out. These three (and Ang Lee) are my favorite achievements in directing this year.
2. While I am NO fan of Mark Boal’s The Hurt Locker screenplay and think it was not deserving of the accolades it got back in the day (cliched characters, episodic sequencing, inconsistencies etc) but Zero Dark Thirty is an entirely different achievement. Should have been nominated.
3. The Intouchables is a fantastic movie and it should have been on that nomination panel.
4. Lincoln is taking acotr, director and picture home come february. Sorry, still find it more like a slightly-above-average episode of The West Wing featuring Lincoln talking like Zoolander (I keep expecting Daniel Day-Lewis to do The Magnum on most of the Lincoln scenes)
5. The saddest year for long-form animation ever. I mean, really: snooze fest.
Will be watching the telecast with excitement, as always, but the last time I actually CARED was back when The Departed and Scorsese won.
T.
One more thing:
To all those who doubted Life of Pi
HAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA
Sorry for that.
I’m disappointed by the lack of love for “Bully,” a very important film, in the documentary feature category. Why do documentaries people actual watch so rarely get nominated? Sad for Kathryn Bigelow, and was hoping for a Laura Linney (Hyde Park on Hudson) surprise. Oh, well.
Stunning Bigelow snub. Not a big fan of ZD30 but c’mon the last 30 minutes alone should’ve warranted a nom at least. This just smells ugly. I’m happy for Beasts, but this just ain’t cool. Heads should roll over this snub.
The Affleck and Bigelow snubs are NOT good for the Oscars’ credibility (not that it had much credibility to begin with after it awarded certain films). Hooper and Tarantino had a reasonable chance of being nominated, but those two omissions are just shocking. I can’t really say that I’m upset that Spielberg is clearly going to win now, as he definitely deserves to become only the 4th director to win 3 or more Best Director Oscars (John Ford, William Wyler, and Frank Capra being the other 3). However, I would have preferred for Affleck to win the DGA and the Oscar this season. That’s what happens when the relatively small Oscars’ directors branch cannot rely on the much bigger DGA nominations as a guideline/crutch as to whom they should nominate. It makes it much more interesting, but when pretty obvious nominees are snubbed, it’s awkward.
I have to admit the only real shocker here for me is the omission of Ben Affleck.
A few days ago we did a simulated fantasy ballot. So I thought to myself let’s compare and see how WE did compared to AMPAS.
We choose ten films. AMPAS choose 9. Of those nine 8 showed up on our simulated ballot. The only two we had that didn’t get nominated were The Master and Moonrise Kingdom.
The Director was the branch we all seemed to miss because we only got one of the AMPAS five. We choose Spielberg, Affleck, Bigelow, Anderson, and Tarantino. The only one to get nominated was Spielberg and you have to admit there were a lot of people on this site hoping he didn’t get nominated.
In the B Actor category we got 4 out five. We knew there was one wild card spot in Best Actor and we choose Denis Lavant which in my opinion was a long shot and the Academy went with Denzel.
In the Best Actress category we got all five ladies. Even though there were lots of doubts about Wallis. .
In Supporting Actress we got 4 out of 5. This had another wild card slot and we picked Dowd the Academy went with Weaver.
In Supporting Actor we got 3 out of 5. We had Di Caprio and the Academy preferred Waltz. So in some regard we really got 4 out of 5 just the wrong actor from the right film. The Academy chose Arkin over Miller in Perks.
Cinematography we got 3 out of Five. With Adapted and Original Screenplay we got 4 out 5 in both categories. The other category we kinda got messed up with was Editing. We only got 2 out of 5.
I don’t think we did so bad when you think about this year.
Can you imagine if Bigelow and Affleck had been snubbed, and instead of Haneke or Zeitlin, they nominated Hooper?
The exploding would have been magnificent.
I liked Seth and Emma though I’d rather they listed alpha instead of random.
ANG LEE! ANG LEE! ANG LEE!
This dude’s winning the DGA and the Directing Oscar—probably the most versatile director working today!!
@helios – I agree. SLP is not a strong enough movie getting BP or BD. It is like Up in the Air of Jason Reitman.
Here’s hoping that the lack of love for Affleck in Directing will translate for a BP win for Argo…
Since the Academy loves payback… When they realize what a travesty it is to choose BEHN over BEN…. No???
I, for one, celebrate the small children who assembled my iPad
Who will be Best Supporting Actor this year? I don’t think they’ll award Hoffman, Waltz and Arkin again so soon after their Oscar wins. De Niro’s performance is nothing much and IMO does not even deserve to be nominated. So Tommy Lee Jones wins by default?
Everyone is proclaiming Jennifer Lawrence the winner, but I don’t think so. The voters who’ll go for her will probably be more likely to vote also for Chastain and Watts. They will be splitting votes. Which makes it quite possible for Riva to win. And frankly she gives a performance 10x better than Jennifer Lawrence’s.
I honestly don’t think Sally Field can go 3 for 3, so Anne Hathaway should start writing her Oscar speech now.
Best Actor is still DDL’s to lose. Anyone saying that Cooper has a shot at this are clearly out of touch with reality or just wishful thinking.
Please tired of Weinstein and Spielberg may easily opt for Amour for their best picture. Do not forget it is the LAFCA best picture as well!
I’m going to spend the rest of my day dropping things and asking little kids to pick them up just to circumvent child labor laws. Thanks for the inspiration, Michelle. 😀
If only Tim Hooper had twitter so you could have a taste of whats going on here? I’m glad the Doc is here and he brought the diazepam :/
Alejandro- why not? If they gave Lee an Oscar for BBM, and Slumdog Millionaire won, I wouldn’t put it past the Academy.
SLP isn’t strong enough to win anything IMO but Lawrence will probably win and it’s a big threat to win BP too. Awful…
With that said….. a lot of the other categories are very nice to see. Best Actress, for instance? Couldn’t be happier
Well, I guess we could spin this as at least Bigelow and Affleck got nominated for producing.
Big surprises this year, but the bench was very deep. I’m sure the noms reflect close races more than consensus choices, except in the case of Lincoln, which obviously becomes the film to beat. Amour and Life of Pi choices made me think better of the Academy. And the absence of favorite actors or directors from these lists in no way lessens their achievements ( having the academy vote before the guilds announce seemingly helps spread the love around).
These nominees are not like those in some years (where you end up picking people because there are five or ten slots, and not five or ten great choices), all of whom seem to be deserving in one way or another.
Relax people… It’s not the love for SLP that got the film all those nominations. IT’S THE WEINSTEIN MACHINE people!!! Open your eyes. This is SPR vs SIL all over again!! It’s Spielberg vs Weinstein again and if the academy is not careful, Weinstein will steal it again.
AdamA for the win – exactly. And you know what, he may win, like that old guy did for All the President’s Men.
Man, they really fell for Beasts of the Southern Wild, didn’t they?
Well, fortunately the directing snubs mean pro-torture/badly written/boringly directed ZDT can’t win BP, though it looks like Spielberg’s HBO Original Movie ‘Lincoln’ will take home the top prize and BD. Yawn.
How did Bigelow and Affleck get left off? Like…… what happened?
“My best joke of the year so far, and it gets censored. Boo ”
I agree. It was your best joke and I miss it now. : )
SLP cannot win a single Oscar except for Best Actress. In no other category is strong enough to win.
My best joke of the year so far, and it gets censored. Boo 😀
It’s common when a woman say the truth, an inconvenient truth, the men, cowardly, say she is mad.
The truth is that is Child exploitation
“I hope Affleck takes Bafta and Bigelow takes the DGA. Nothing against Spielberg, I fully expect him to win the Oscar, I just want to see those two outstanding directorial achievements recognized, that’s all.”
Maybe Ang Lee will win one of these awards. Oh, wait did he get nominated?
I don’t think I have ever been as surprised by (non) nominations as I have for the Affleck and Bigelow snubs.
Seems it’s Lincoln (Spielberg) vs SLP (Weinstein), with Life of Pi as a possible spoiler.
It all comes down to Lincoln vs. SLP, I don’t think the Academy will go for Life of Pi, unfortunately.
Alper friend Marion was very ok in the film I really think wallis was better I’m with you I’m rooting for riva or watts as much as I love Jennifer isn’t the role for a win maybe for Serena next year so will have next year Naomi for Diana , Jennifer for Serena , this time Kidman for grace ?
Pls if they hate desperate campaign from Kidman and dowd , please skip Hathaway she is so desperate she already wrote her speech
The Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner
The Cannes Palme D’Or winner
The TIFF People’s Choice winner
…all up for Best Picture/Director/Screenplay.
I also can’t believe that The Intouchables didn’t make best foreign. War Witch wasn’t very good IMO. I just need to see Kon-Tiki now.
Best director is crazy. Seriously Bigelow and Affleck dominated the critics awards. They were on every list and arguably #1 and #2. What happened?
@gabriel oak
I still predict he won’t get nominated! Methinks they’ll recount the votes and realize that the Hoopster takes his place.
Such a tease, Paddy…
“Ang Lee has also a Golden Globe director nom, so he is the only one to have been nominated for all 4 major awards Oscar DGA Bafta GG.”
And so many were predicting he wouldn’t be nominated!
Don’t tell me you’re another one of those disgusting children, Anthony. I hope I don’t have to come over and exploit you too.
SLP would be the best Best Picture winner since No Country — an emotionally complete experience that doesn’t rely on gimmicks. I feel the momentum.
Has’ Tero’s comment been removed? Or am I going blind again?!?
Mrs. Miniver (won BP, actress, and supporting actress)
For Whom the Bell Tolls (won for supporting actress)
Johnny Belinda (won for actress)
Sunset Blvd (won none in acting or BP races)
Streetcar Named Desire (won actress and both supporting races)
From Here To Eternity (won BP and both supporting races)
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (won actress and supporting actress)
Bonnie and Clyde (won supporting actress)
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (won actress)
Network (actor, actress, and supporting actress)
Coming Home (won for actor and actress)
Reds (won for supporting actress)
PADDY you effing kill me!!
That is a scene I would like to see next month:
Ang Lee winning Best Picture still having his Best Director Oscar in the hand, he approaches the podium and thanks the Academy for both his Best Pictures winners: Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi.
Then I can erase the Trauma of witnessing Crash win BP.
Comment
LMAO Tero you cold-hearted cunt.
I have to go
teach music toEXPLOIT, ABUSE AND MURDER children in an hour.Shit, did I just say that?
Tero, that comment was WAY out of line.
Michelle — what evidence do you have that Wallis was exploited in the making of Beasts????? Do you boycott every movie and TV show featuring a child?
Are you aware that there is probably no industry where there are greater controls over how underage people are treated than the entertainment industry?
Do you realize that Beasts did not really happen, and that Wallis was not really forced to live in swamps and eat bugs?
Have you ever been diagnosed as mentally ill, or do you find that people often call you an idiot?
Tetons, I think making jokes about child abuse and not finishing work is not the way to go. Let him/her speak for a while then he/she will shut up. Every year we get those attention seeking psychos. When you don’t respond to them they go away
I must say that I am a little happy about the “record-breaking” Les Mis going just half way of its expected 15 noms. Sure, the number came down from there, but it was still double digits. Having said that, I’m sad that The Master did the very same.
From the viable BP nominees (that can win), be it Life of Pi or Lincoln – SLP would be the worst winner since Crash.
Only two names have the BAFTA + ACADEMY Best Director nominations. Haneke and Lee. This must tell us something.
With the shocking Oscar BD-lineup, what will be VERY interesting to see whether Bigelow or Affleck could win something big like the DGA, Bafta, Golden Globe or Critics Choice…the last two are in the next few days so the Oscar-snub clearly wasn’t taken into consideration during their voting period. I hope Affleck takes Bafta and Bigelow takes the DGA. Nothing against Spielberg, I fully expect him to win the Oscar, I just want to see those two outstanding directorial achievements recognized, that’s all.
@CB He played an Academy voter.
OMG!!! Amour!!!! My fav movie of the year and it got nominated for best picture and best director and Emmanuelle Riva. 🙂
The only movie nominated that I didn’t really like was Django Unchained — the rest is a great lineup.
So disappointed that John Hawkes didn’t make it in. He was so great in The Sessions. But the other 5 were great as well. Good luck to Joaquin at the Oscars.
Great lineup for best actress but I would replace Wallis for Marion Cotillard or Helen Mirren. I’m so relieved that Emmanuelle and Naomi made the final 5.
Leonardo DiCaprio. 🙁
But at least Christoph made it. Philip Seymour Hoffman will hopefully win it though.
OMG!! Jacki Weaver — she was my NGNG pick — yippee!!!! Too bad about Ann Dowd not making it in but that’s a solid top 5.
I still can’t believe that Amour and Beasts made best director. Kathryn 🙁
Flight and Moonrise Kingdom and maybe The Master were probably close to the top 10 for best picture.
Great nominations!!
@ phantom and unlikely hood
Don’t make me cry, guys. It is too depressing to think that Cooper might have a bigger chance over DDL or even Phoenix. This is crazy talk. *sighs*
Can someone explain what Alan Arkin did that’s awards-worthy?
Quiz; which one is a bigger nu.mber? Average age of supporting actor nominees or average age of director nominees???
……..aaaaaaaaaaand David Lean’s family can officially rest easy for another year. (Kinda like Eric Dickerson when he sees Adrian Peterson come within 9 yards of the record.) Neither Hooper nor Bigelow will become the second person to win BD and BP on consecutive films.
I feel like a stupid.
I´m really speechless.
WHERE´S AFFLECK?
WHERE´S BIGELOW?
WHERE´S COTILLARD?
WHERE´S HOLLAND?
And, for some people not certain, but WHERE´S THE MASTER AND PTA?
And so many noms to that poor movie whit a little girl who obviously can´t act, earning a chick?
IT´S A SHAME!!!!!!!!!!!!
SHAME YOU, ACADEMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ang Lee is the front runner in the BD category and he will likely win the DGA award. Haneke is close behind him.
Who would have thought that the actors of all people would come through for THE MASTER? Shame on the directors and writers.
correction, Reds (1981) was (probably) the last with all 4 acting categories. So I guess what the Academy is trying to tell us that Silver Linings Playbook is the best acted film of the last 31 years…lovely.
People in Hollywood still haven’t forgiven Affleck for Bennifer.
Thank you Ryan Adams
Smart Oscar-history people:
Can someone provide a list of films that got nominated for Best Picture AND in all four acting categories? I know Streetcar Named Desire and Network, but what else?
(Silver Linings haters, you’ll be happy to know that Streetcar and Network didn’t win BP. On the other hand, they DID win 3 of their 4 nominated acting awards. Gulp.)
What I would like to see: Some real Oscar campaigning for the Best Picture nominees since there are quite a few weeks now to change voters’ minds. Yes, Lincoln is the film to beat but I’d like to see some of the other campaigns put up a fight!!!
Michelle, what medication do you take? How many chirrens do you have? Get a life!
I hope Affleck recovers quickly from this snub shock… and John Hawkes snub is a travesty as well. He went full method in The Sessions. It’s not easy acting with just your head and facial expressions.
Supporting Actor nominees are all old farts who have already won Oscars before. This is ridiculous in a year with so many great performances from younger and oscar-virgin actors: Redmayne, McGregor, Holland and even DiCaprio.
Yep, Russell’s nod and the love for that film in general is sickening indeed.
Oh wait–just looked upthread. You got this, Michelle!
Michelle – any chance your last name is Henry? Thought so.
Michelle, I recommend saying the same thing 100 times with escalating rage.
What the heck happened in Best Director?!?! Only two DGA nominees made it! I knew Hooper was on the fence, but no Affleck or Bigelow? Both seemed 100% guaranteed! Could we be seeing the beginnings of a rare disagreement between the two groups?
The only TRUTH is that you Michelle need some serious help.
The best thing about Tom Hooper not being nominated is that we don’t have to read insufferable comments about how he didn’t deserve to be nominated.
Instead I’d like to point my anger at Russell getting nominated. I still don’t get the love for SLP.
There is one thing that is quite thrilling with these nominations and this is the 11 nomination showing of THE LIFE OF PI, which is my own #2 film of the year behind THE TURIN HORSE (I had OSLO and LES MIZ at 3 and 4). A beautiful film that should win cinematography and score, and will give LINCOLN a run for the top prizes.
In my opinion K Bigelow snub has more to do with the fact that she is a female director than with the torture controversy. Boal got nom and he will probably win and I didn’t expect the film to get more than 6 or 7 noms anyway. I don’t think we can say it cannot win BP anymore.
Bravo, people get angry because I say the truth, that is child exploitation
Bryce Forestieri: You are not alone when it comes to Arkin in Argo. He was okay at best. Any elderly actor could easily replace him. He is nothing special. McConaughey on the other hand, is very memorable and good in Magic Mike
The positive:
1) Haneke best director nom. Im sooo fhappy
2) Eiko Ishioka costume design nom. A nice farewell to this genius!
3) Naomi Watts
4) Skyfall with 5 noms
5) Hooper not nominated for best director
6) Kon-Tiki nominated thanks to Weinstein
7) Daniel Day-Lewis will get his 3rd Oscar
The bad:
1) Skyfall snubbed for best picture
2) Bigelow snubbed for best director
3) Affleck snubbed for best director
4) McConaughey snubbed for best supporting actor
5) The Intouchables snubbed in best foreign language
6) Denzel nominated instead of Hawkes
I might completely disagree with Michelle since there are very strict rules regulating child actors so it’s not child exploitation, but still there’s no need to insult her, I’m sure she’s being sincere and courageous to express her opinions in a hostile environment.
I’m gonna be so happy if Silver Linings Playbook wins it all. So very happy.
Ang Lee is the only director to get nominated at the BAFTAs, GG, DGA, and now Oscars…and his film got the most nominations…
Of course my two favorite movies of this year (The Impossible & The Dark Knight Rises) have been snubbed :(, but SO HAPPY about the Academy not liking Tom Hooper direction!!!!. Having this nominees, this are my personal picks (and what I would love to happen):
Best Picture: Lincoln (happening)
Best Director: Steven Spielberg – Lincoln (happening)
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis – Lincoln (happening)

Best Animated Feature: Frankenweenie (it can happen)
Best Foreing Languaje Film: Amour (happening)

Best Sound Editing: Zero Dark Thirty (it can happen)
Best Sound Mixing: Skyfall (maybe it can happen)
Best Visual Effects: The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey (maybe it can happen)
Total of Oscars:
Lincoln: 9
Zero Dark Thirty: 3
Skyfall: 3
The Hobbit: 2
The Impossible: 1
Frankenweenie: 1
Amour: 1
It’s a little known fact that Michelle’s favorite movie is Annie
Wow, here the Academy was adding best picture nominees to drum up interest in the Ocsars and they managed to make this race very uninteresting. With no Affleck for Director, this is going to be a Lincoln year.
IDK, guys, Michelle is kind of making my morning.
I’m not jumping on board with the idea that Argo and ZDT will go home empty-handed – this Best Director snub could work the other way and get people to vote for the films in other categories (though not, of course, Best Picture) – but if those two films DO go home empty-handed, you read it here first:
In years to come they will say that 2012 was when Hollywood chose to turn away from the Middle East. Not their problem anymore.
Amen, phantom!
Michelle are you insane?
Michelle:
Big time DEUCE BAG!!!!
Michelle, you are a psychopath!!!
Sasha – you don’t use it often but please whip out the ban hammer on “Michelle”. She’s mentally ill, and she’s ruining this thread.
Shame!!! little girl Wallis is in but Marion Cotillard’s super performance is out.
Jessica Chastain, Naomi Watts and Riva are my favourites.
Very happy for Beast , all 4 nominations deserved . Should have been nominated for best score. BIgelow not being nominated makes no sense. Life of pi weakest bp nom. Lee should not have been nominated.
The person who identifies herself as “Michelle” is presently wanted by attendants from Greystone. She is one sick puppy.
These nominations make me wish there were only 5 BP nominees. Who knows what that list would have looked like this year.
Maybe, Michelle, you should grab a picture of the pope and rip it up next time you sing on Saturday Night Live.
People got angry at her for being disrespectful, but she was proven right in the long run.
The old Little Rascals shorts, Pinocchio (Dickie Jones), Bambi (Peter Behn as Thumper), Bobby Driscoll in So Dear to my Heart and Treasure Island, Shane, The Yearling, Old Yeller, Paper Moon, The Piano, The Sixth Sense – I fucking LOVE Child Exploitation…in other words, FUCK OFF MICHELLE YOU OBNOXIOUS TROLL.
Is it just me, or does it suddenly seem like every Actress nominee has a shot?
I’m glad the Academy didn’t pretend Batman was “serious” enough material for an Academy Award.
Accept child labor is accept child exploitation and child abuse…What will say Sasha Stone, Oprah Winfrey and Susan Sarandon about that?
If we get enough complaints about this wild-eyed maniac Michelle character, it’s easy enough to classify her repetitive craziness as spam.
Or we can let her head explode all morning.
Meanwhile, Michelle, know that no more of your direct personal attacks are going to show up on this page.
THE GREAT
– Emmanuelle Riva (heartbreakingly beautiful performance, MIGHT win !)
– Joaquin Phoenix (without a doubt one of the VERY best of 2012)
– Hugh Jackman (career nomination for a role of a lifetime)
THE GOOD
– Anna Karenina receives 4 well-deserved nominations
THE BAD (I expected these snubs, but still)
– Marion Cotillard (IMO, more deserving than Wallis, there I said it)
– John Hawkes (massive competition, I admit, couldn’t knock any of the 5 out)
– Ewan McGregor (love Alan Arkin, but there were so many MORE deserving this year)
– Leonardo DiCaprio (ditto)
– The Perks of Being a Wallflower (I hoped the Academy could get over it being a teen film)
THE HORRIBLE
– David O. Russell over Kathryn Bigelow/Ben Affleck (worse when he knocked out Nolan)
– Paul Thomas Anderson snubbed in Director AND Original Screenplay
– Silver Linings Playbook becoming the first film to receive acting nominations in all four categories since Network (1976) ? Really ? THIS is the first film that deserves that honor in the last 36 years ?
Consensus : Lincoln is SO winning this in a walk, its competition was basically eliminated with the BD-lineup (Zero Dark Thirty, Argo, Les Misérables, Django Unchained), so it will go into the final round without even a viable runner-up. One could argue that based on the nominations, the Academy is definitely VERY into Silver Linings Playbook, and it’s probably true, also Weinstein will no doubt campaign his ass off in the next few weeks, but I don’t think Silver Linings Playbook could possibly be the Shakespeare in Love to Lincoln’s Saving Private Ryan. Round Two should go to Spielberg…
I would like to congratulate the Academy. I wrote here many times that Haneke and Zeitlin should be nominated and their visions of cinema is much better than Affleck’s or Bigelow’s.
The snub of Bigelow made my day. Hell YEAH!
@kjbacon
“MacFarlane is smug. I hate smug. I hate smug like Lou Grant hates spunk.”
Queue Family Guy cut-away scene…
Is the duty of all who have a minimum of respect for the rights of children asking not use them as commodities, for money, for awards, for an adult ideas of cinema should to be
Jacki Weaver was magnificent in ANIMAL KINGDOM, Jacki Weaver was in PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, that’s fucking legend in my book!!
@Michelle
Be so kind and check the label on the back of your keyboard and tell me where it was made. Now write some more things about child exploitation with your assembled with childrens’ hands equipment.
Best Director is a train wreck.
Jacki Weaver? Are you serious? This is really a thankless role in which one can imagine literally anyone performing competently. For some reason the Academy really went for Playbook. That Russell got nominated is truly a mystery.
But not nominating either Bigelow, Affleck, or Tarantino, those are some major snubs right there for 3 of the best directing jobs of the year.
@Bryce
two french-titled movies in BP (Les Misérables & Amour) + Riva for best actress, that’s enough 4 me. I don’t even support the French anyway, just a bunch of whiners, can’t wait to GTFO.
Bravo, everybody’s going to celebrate the child exploitation, oops! sorry the nomination from Quvenzhané Wallis
Wow, youngest BA nominee ever.
I was sure the Academy was somehow concerned about Wallis’ age, but I was wrong.
So congratz little Q!
So happy for Haneke, Riva and Amour!
I always knew Lawrence, Chastain and Watts were locked.
SLP got huge love from the Academy, so there’s no denial J-Law is now way ahead of Chastain. I don’t mind. It’s time for a comedy role to win again!
DeNiro is back!
Quite a bit shocked Lincoln missed in Make Up in favour of Hitchcock.
Shocked about the Affleck and Bigelow snubs. But the more I think about it, Ben Z really deserves it for having the vision to make Beasts, which felt far fresher and more visual than ZDT or Argo. I hope he wins.
go silver linings Playbook! My favorite kooky movie of the year!
Down with les miz. Awful singing.
I need to see life of pi.
I’m tired of people like Aragorn saying “it was this ‘torture’ controversy” – putting it in quotes as though it’s nothing. Aragorn and others – have you seen the film? See it tomorrow, then we’ll talk.
Sasha is spot-on about ZDT. She knows it better than Boal and Bigelow do, or at least, how they claim to know it. The film presents a long case FOR torture – and it didn’t need to.
I’ll say it a second time, and hope not to have to say it a third:
since when was everyone around here so naive as to think that there’s only one way to tell a true story?
I’m not gonna weigh in on Michelle’s guilting yet, but I’m glad she’s raising the issue. I’ll assume she’s already signed a petition to get Honey Boo Boo off the air – otherwise she’s a hypocrite.
@kjbacon
don’t like SLP, but Jackman, WAtts, Hathaway would make my day!
Ang Lee has also a Golden Globe director nom, so he is the only one to have been nominated for all 4 major awards Oscar DGA Bafta GG.
Damn, not even the softies at AMPAS liked that UNTOUCHABLES shit. What are the french on?
I don’t see Ang Lee winning. I see Life of Pi more likely to win Picture in a split than Lee winning in a split. Maybe that is just me.
@PaulH
Heartfelt condoleances
All I hope is that I won’t hear “And the Oscar for best feature film goes to…Silver Linings Playbook” coming Oscar night. Please Academy, don’t do this. *prays*
Why must I stop? You knew that countries where free support child exploitation are those with the highest rate of child sexual abuse? So, if you know a case of child sexual abuse go to ask explanations to Sasha Stone, Oprah Winfrey, Susan Sarandon because they support child exploitation
NAOMI WATTS wins for Best Actress, she gave the best female performance of the year in The Impossible,a wonderful tour de force performance in an independent movie.
Please no Jennifer or Jessica, good performances but nothing special.
sadly I have to leave Watts and Chastain for best actress. It is now between, Lawrence (her film garnered 8 nominations, surprises on some categories, her film will be in a wide release next week), Riva, (PIC, dir, screenplay, foreign film, the oldest ba nominee all nominations were quite a surprise), and Wallis (she’s the youngest ba nominee of all time, her film is nominated for pic, did surprise in dir. which tells a lot.)
Here are your winners:
SLP
Jackman
Watts
Hoffman
Hathaway
Russell
Amy Adams = Thelma Ritter
Lincoln will go down the Color Purple drain pipe
you may all go back to bed, even if you’re on the East Coast.
@ danny
“Just thought I should point out..
only ONE director this year has a DGA, BAFTA and OSCAR nom
Ang lee FTW!”
YES, and his film “missed” only SAG Ensemble but that was impossible to get, unless they wanted to consider the acting of a CGI tiger…
“Skyfall” with five nominations. Very pleased. Although it should have been nominated for Best Film Editing as well.
“Snow White and the Huntsman” with four nominations. Very pleased. Although it should have been nominated for Best Production Design as well.
“Amour” – love the love for this film.
“Life of Pi” – I haven’t seen it. Now I’m going to. 11 nominations? Wow!
“Silver Linings Playbook” – my God. When was the last time a film nailed all 4 acting categories? I think it was “Reds” way back in 1981. Only a few other films can boast that accomplishment (“Bonnie and Clyde” and Guess Who’s coming to Dinner” in 1967, “Network” in 1976.
Very sad about the John Hawkes snub.
But the nomination of Phoenix actually makes Best Actor a horse race now. I did not see anyone beating DDL. But with Phoenix in there, I can actually see voters going for him, given the intensity of his performance and an anybody-but-DDL movement since he has already won twice.
The Oscars are way more fun when there is a race in the categories.
Can I just say how happy I am that the incredibly overrated Kathryn Bigelow was not nominated (by the directors) for her latest right-wing fantasy…
The number you need to take away from this morning: $ 325,000. The current box office take of Amour. A 2-hour death scene that hits a little too close to home for one who just lost his dad and others like me. And the wool keeps getting pulled over voters re: Life Of Pi. Sympathy vote for Ang Lee because of the grievous injustice Brokeback suffered in BP.
Three of my favourite films are all nominated for BP, hahaa. They are Amour, Life of Pi and Lincoln. So, please, no SLP win, but Life of Pi, thank you. Amour has no chance winning this category, but it will surely win Foreign now (as The Intouchables is gone).
Wow.
The Best Director category will never feel locked again
Truly happy for Amour and Beasts. My wishes came true. I was expeting Looper and Perks also, but life is no perfect.
Pd: Could someone shut up Michelle with her child abuse thing? Thanks.
Don’t matter Paddy, you have the support of Sasha Stone, Oprah Winfrey and Susan Sarandon, they support child exploitation so, take it easy
I think Lincoln is a strong contender to win Actor – Supp Actor – Screenplay and maybe B Picture nothing else.
I think that Life of Pi can win at least 4 or 5 Oscars: Cinematography – Music – Visual Effects – Sound mixing – Director and B Picture
I don’t mind seeing Ang Lee take his second Oscar and Lincoln taking picture but probably SLP will triumph.
Just thought I should point out..
only ONE director this year has a DGA, BAFTA and OSCAR nom
Ang lee FTW!
So it’s officially the Jeff Wells(SLP) vs. Sasha Stone (Lincoln) debate, then…I’m beginning to think SLP can win…
EARLY PREDICTION: Quentin Tarantino wins Best Original Screenplay for DJANGO UNCHAINED, and the country better for it!!
I’m actually quite pleased with the noms.
Would’ve liked Bigelow, or to a lesser extent Tarantino, over Zeitlin, but the other four directors were spot on.
Would’ve liked Skyfall or TDKR sneaking in, but it’s fine it didn’t.
Arkin shouldn’t have been nominated, nor Jackman, but that’s nitpicking.
Surprised they nominated the cast for The Master, but no noms for Picture or Anderson.
All in all, it can’t be perfect, but they chose extremely solidly and they deviated from the norm. The love for Amour is outstanding, that film deserves all of its nominations.
I love the Academy today. I will takes Beasts snubs in Score & Cinematography if it means Wallis is a Best Actress nominee and Zeitlin gets a nod for Best Director. He’s a visionary, he not only directed the film, he co-wrote the screenplay AND co-wrote the music. He is a DOUBLE Oscar nominee today, I LOVE it. One of the few cases where his debut full feature film got him a nomination, one he DESERVES.
I honestly thought Seth was joking, the audible gasp in the audience was so dramatic, great moment for The Academy.
I am completely devastated for Kathryn Bigelow. She turns in work that surpasses even The Hurt Locker and then is given the boot.
****That being said, I think Ang Lee might win Best Director. YES, ANG LEE!!!! The Only Person to get DGA, OSCAR, BAFTA, and GLOBE nominations in the lineup!!! And it will be richly deserved.
AND, DO NOT count out Argo for Best Picture — I would not be shocked if it came surging back.
P.S. What a boring, uninspired lineup for Supporting Actor. MEH
Thrilled with the Beast of the Southern Wild love fest !!! I thought this movie was going to have just 1 nomination … in the Best Picture lineup – but … this is Shakespear in Love all over again !!! SLP will win Best Picture, Actress, and one Supporting (Robert DeNiro seems to have the Veterans stauts the most).
Best Picture – SLP
Best Director – Linclon
Best Actor – Linclon
Best Actress – SLP
Best Support Actor – SLP
Best Support Actress – Linclon
MacFarlane is smug. I hate smug. I hate smug like Lou Grant hates spunk.
Matthew McConaughey (MAGIC MIKE) should have been in instead of fucking Alan Arkin! Who is the Academy kidding? I will never get the Alan Arkin love for what he did in ARGO. An Oscar nomination for that? Really? Am I the one disconnected here?? What’s done is done.
Congratulations to Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis on their 3rd Oscar wins! It’s a “Lincoln” sweep. Deal with it.
I strongly feel Waltz and Tarantino will score for “Django”…
Kathryn Bigelow’s snub was cruel–almost seems politically motivated from all this unwanted, negative publicity surrounding the film…doesn’t change the fact that it was easily one of the most accomplished directorial feats of the year. Sheesh, this is the snub that doesn’t sit well with me…in favor of Benh Zeitlin and David O. Russell??? I just can’t even.
Ben Affleck snub is shocking as well…and I was just starting to accept an inevitable win for him.
Wallis making it was surprising as well, although I did think she would pull off some number one votes. That it came at the expense of Marion Cotillard really makes me angry though, however.
Jacki Weaver for SLP? You really liked the film THAT much? Props to Dave Karger and Scott Feinberg for predicting her, but my god, what a throwaway nomination for a nothing role. Ann Dowd and Kidman are probably slittling their wrists. Judi Dench in Skyfall would’ve been a more worthy choice.
However, I am THRILLED the Academy remembered Joaquin Phoneix. So excited for Michael Haneke and Emmanuelle Riva. Glad for Naomi, too…I was worried about her, but she pulled it off. Well done!
Overall, I think it’s Lincoln’s to lose. Really shocked that the Academy loved SLP and Beasts as much as they did…it’s always the movies that I am kind of “meh” about that people end up fawning over. Ugh.
This was a good day for “No Guts, No Glory” predictors.
I am really starting to lose faith. Loved by so many, but not by the people that count the most.
DiCaprio always gets screwed and I just don’t know what needs to happen for him to get nominated and to win. Next year, The Great Gatsby is coming out in the summer and that will automatically make him irrelevant come Oscar time. And for the Wolf of Wall Street he’ll probably get screwed over again.
The Academy just dislikes him and I am surprised that he even has 3 nominations up to date. He should have won for Catch Me if You Can, Django Unchained and The Departed but he just gets screwed over and over again.
I am starting to think that he does need a comedic role just to reset. People just won’t give it to him and it’s really sad. I mean how can people like Alan Arkin be there in Argo for like 20 min. of the movie with just stupid dialogue and get nominated while DiCaprio plays a spectacular villain and get screwed over again.
I just don’t get it. Jennifer Lawrence is getting her due, Bradley Cooper his – and yet no love for Leo… I really am starting to lose hope. He’ll probably never win unless he makes a stupid comedy ala Silver Linings and just get nominated. But opportunities are getting less and less and I just don’t see it.
Lincoln is front runner but SLP and life of rigggghhhhht on its heels. Hoping the academy goes with Lincoln, it’s weightier and more impressive across the board imo
i actually think jacki weaver is the best effing nomination. you had freaking kidman skyping with people and sending them links just so she could desperately make it and as much as i love dowd we all know she campaigned hard as well. while little jacki just sat there and got rewarded. hands down the best fuck you nomination, besides also screwing with bigelow.
but yeah very hilarious!!!
Is this what you want America? Child labor?, Child exploitation, child abuse?
So excited for Benh Zeitlin and Wallis and Beasts and Haneke and Riva and Amour. It’s great to see so new people in the line up good job Academy! Incredible for Lincoln. The only thing that I am not happy about is Bigelow not being in the line up. This might also not bode well for Chastain vs. Lawrence?
And once again the Best Supporting Actor leaves me completely cold and I would leave it blank if I were an Academy voter.
One of the most exciting years! Yeah, I mourn over Affleck’s lack of nomination, but Zeitlin and Haneke are great, wonderful nominees. Best Director is the most interesting and vibrant category this year and honestly I don’t care abour Bigelow’s nomination if both of the mentioned guys made it at her expense.
So, now it seems that SLP, Life of Pi and Lincoln are the front runners. I think taht if we had 5 nominees, they would be Argo and Amour. ZDT and Les Mis suffer and I don’t think that the wind will change.
Lincoln 12
Life of Pi 11
Les Miserables 9
Silver linings 8
Argo 7
Zd30 5
Django 5
Amour 5
Skyfall 5
Beasts 4
Anna karenina 4
Hobbit 3
Come on Naomi!
Come on Life of Pi!
Shut the fuck up Michelle!
Really happy with the love for Beasts of the Southern Wild, especially for Wallis!
Did Argo and Zero Dark Thirty just cancel each other out?!?!?! Sadness!
Why was Leo DiCaprio overlooked AGAIN?!?! Unexplainable!
Pretty happy about the Best Picture lineup though.
What a mixed bag this year.
These nominations remind me I shouldn’t waste that much time obsessing over Awards Season. Just enjoy watching movies you like people! Watch the Oscars if you like the glamour and celebrating movies. but the whole wishful predicting game is too hard to bear…
Life of Pi got ELEVEN nominations. It’s a three way race. Sasha is right.
Robert Downey Jr. joins the long list of peers support for Naomi Watts’ performance in “The Impossible”: Angelina Jolie, Mark Ruffalo, Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Alicia Silverstone, Reese Witherspoon, Jack Black, Ewan Mcgregor, Jennifer Connelly, Benicio Del Toro, Robert Downey Jr. ….

2013 Oscars Best Actress Nominees:
Naomi Watts (The Impossible)
Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty)
Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook)
Emmanuelle Riva (Amour)
Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild)
You knew that countries where free support child exploitation are those with the highest rate of child sexual abuse? So, if you know a case of child sexual abuse go to ask explanations to Sasha Stone, Oprah Winfrey, Susan Sarandon because they support child exploitation
Hated Beasts but go Amour!! Go Michael Haneke – I love him so much! White Ribbon is so amazing!!!!!! So thrilled.
And middling Argo snubbed of director!
And of course the styleless Kathryn Bigelow doesn’t get nominated because she doesn’t deserve it!!!!!!!! Great year, Academy!!!
@Antoinette
“btw, I didn’t like all the joking between nominations.”
I strongly agree, especially that “Hitler” joke about Austria’s “Amour” nomination (It was mentioned that the previous collaboration between Austria and Germany is Hitler”) which I believe is out of context and ill-timed, given the wide support and seriousness of the ceremony.
WINNER PREDICTIONS (I know it’s way too early to do this, but it’s just for fun.)
Best Picture: Silver Linings Playbook (Homegrown family values + recovery from psychological issues + art (through dance) and friendship as the channels of redemption = a perfect antidote for today’s mostly stressful news events
Best Director: Give Spielberg his third Oscar now!
Best Actor: Day-Lewis, ’nuff said.
Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence, period. (I can’t wait for her “interesting” acceptance speech already!)
Best Supporting Actor: Hard to predict, but I’ll vote for Philip Seymour Hoffman for now.
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway’s acceptance speech is being prepared already.
Best Adapted Screenplay: Pulitzer, Emmy, Tony, and now Academy Award winner Tony Kushner
Best Original Screenplay: Mark Boal’s win here is a manifestation of strong Academy support for him and the film in general, given the government’s continued debacle over the film’s sources.
Best Animated Feature Film: Brave.
Best Foreign Language Film: Amour, and it’s well-deserved. (It’s the first Palme d’Or winner to be honored with an Oscar in this category since 1988’s “Pelle The Conqueror, which also earned a Best Actor nomination for Max von Sydow.)
Since nobody is saying it I will. LINCOLN got robbed!!
HITCHCOCK over LINCOLN in Best Makeup????
What a joke everyone
Yay:
Silver Linings Playbook!
Joaquin Phoenix
The Pirates! Band of Misfits
just went to deadline, thr and variety and there are SLP and Django ads everywhere… EVERYWHERE!!! It’s a TRAP, we’re cornered by Harvey!!!
Surprised that “Learn Me Right” from Brave didn’t crack Best Original Song. I thought the Oscars would want the future Grammy Award winners Mumford and Sons to perform during the ceremony.
“Everybody Needs A Best Friend” from Ted should’ve been a lock since October.
I am so sad Andy Samberg got snubbed for That’s My Boy. Yeah, I know he sucked and the film sucked and it had no shot at a nomination. But he was snubbed!
SSSSSNNNNNNUUUUUUUBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!
Fuck them for…
Snubbing Bigelow and, above all, AFFLECK. So Affleck directs his third great feature and he’s snubbed for the third time, yet Zeitlin is nominated on his first try (just watch him fall off the map after this)? WTF?
Snubbing Dicaprio yet again in favor of Waltz copycatting his performance from Basterds. Revolutionary Road, Shutter Island, J. Edgar, and now Django Unchained…when the fuck will they wake up and recognize his talents again?
Jackie Weaver? Really?!
Love them for…
Nominating Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, snubbing Hooper, showing tech love for Skyfall.
“More proof that flashy campaigning doesn’t pay (Argo, Les Mis). Quiet and patient industry support does (Amour, Beasts, Life of Pi).”
I agree.
SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK vs LINCOLN
though LIFE OF PI could surprise in the end!
Alright who’s Team Pi?, Who’s Team Silver Lining? and who’s Team Lincoln?
LINCOLN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As time passes and with the full list available, I’m just so shocked by obvious snubs. Nine films nominated, why the fuck not squeeze in one more for Skyfall? This stupid ass 50th anniversary celebration at the Oscar will be pure bullshit. And no nominations for technical or screenplays for neither Looper or Cloud Atlas.
And one last time, I live in a world where Bradley Cooper has a Best Actor nomination before Michael Fassbender.
As usual, I’ll pass on watching the Oscars, I read the play by play here at AD, but I can’t bother to watch that shit. I’m sure Seth McFarlane will be great host.
Michelle—don’t Google Vic Morrow. Thank you.
Oh, thanks for putting everything in perspective Aragorn. You’re right…the Academy was BENEVOLENT enough to give Bigelow the Oscar a few years ago. How very nice of them to give a mere female their big prize.
The point is that Bigelow has the most wins coming in to these nominations. She was a sure thing. What happened? Yes, probably the torture controversy is to blame. But more than that, it does have something to do with the “big boys club.”
I don’t support “affirmative action” voting, but I do like to see people who deserve their nominations get them.
@ Adam
How is Leo begging for an Oscar? Because he works with great directors? Takes good roles? Takes chances? That’s not begging for an Oscar. He doesn’t even campaign and that counts more than anything. It’s all politics and the Old Boys Club. They know DiCaprio has more talent than half the people who’ve won Oscars.
I’m done paying attention to the Oscars. Snubbing Bigelow, Affleck and DiCaprio. Idiots.
Great Dane; TDKR was shut out. So was The Hunger Games, and very nearly so was The Avengers, save for a lonely VFX nod.
Keep going Michelle! Beasts of the Southern Wild was made with scab workers! Go Labor Unions! Go Democrats!
(Just hate JOSH trying to play speech patrol)
You support child exploitation so I understand your angry, but just should know that is a immorality
@PaulH: Who cares how much its made? What does that have to do with its quality?
@jerry
More proof that flashy campaigning doesn’t pay (Argo, Les Mis). Quiet and patient industry support does (Amour, Beasts, Life of Pi).
Before th nominations there were 3 front runners and still there are 3. Except 2 of those new front runners were not front runner before. Lincoln, LIfe of Pi and SLP. Oh well. I think Academy just showed their middle finger to those so called Oscar experts! Loving the surprises.
I like what this Michelle is bringing to the conversation and I want to hear more.
And….as shocking as these nominations are….they make it super fucking easy to predict the winners. We know voters are ultimately influenced by the guilds and other awards but had to nominate lost this year…..so….match up the few that are matching the guilds and other awards and you got your race, which leaves little to the imagination. Looks like it is Lincoln all the way. They will now go for the winning horse and get to feel proud that they threw up Beasts, Amour, Wallis and Riva.
The voters love Life of Pi as well. : )
Happy for the film and Ang Lee.
–
By the way, I am eating socks digitally for a blunder – despite the correct NGNG upset-pick for Haneke, I said in a couple of my previous comments in the older threads that Spielberg, Bigelow, Affleck and Lee are all locks, and believed that Tarantino (or Hooper or O. Russell) would make the final spot….
I knew nothing.
(I am looking forward to hearing from Sasha on one of her new threads especially about the BP snub for Affleck and Bigelow, etc.)
Calling that a total snub for The Dark Knight Rises!!!!! Congrats Academy, you’re maturing….
Thank you for surprising us… Most shocking Oscar nominations in recent memory!
Bravo, everyone supports child exploitation!!!
I feel bad for Ann Dowd, BUT I don’t believe her campaigning will have been for nothing. I believe more people are aware of this film and her after this awards season even if she didn’t score an Oscar nomination. I think people will take notice and she’ll score another meaty role. Offers will definitely start coming in. This isn’t the last we’ve seen of her.
@Great Dane Wallis is in no way going to win best actress. She should just be happy she is nominated. Quite a slap in the face of older actresses.
Fox Searchlight should just market everyone’s movies.
@Michelle
Pipe down. You’re embarrassing yourself.
I hate Silver Linings Playbook. I can accept a Lincoln win, I can’t accept an SLP win.
Glad to see How to Survive a Plague got the nomination. I think that’s the only category that I have a shot at being happy with the winner. And Anne Hathaway.
Jesus Michelle….SHUT THE **** UP!!!
@Michelle
most children would love to be in a movie!
it’s not work it’s a game to them, and they are usually well treated by production bc no one wants to get into trouble bc of that.
Did THE DARK KNIGHT RISES get a single nomination?
No they didn’t just ruin my bet on the #1 and #2 BD wins. How do you leave out Kathryn Bigelow? Please someone make sense of this clusterfxxk of nominations. Ben Affleck was everywhere campaigning this season. WTH?
I’m not trying to make hay anymore than which has been raised, but clearly, the Academy’s bias in favor of small, indie art house films has never been more evident than today. Is Amour the least-grossing film ever to be nominated for BP? I respectfully encourage you to prove me wrong.
Interesting. Beasts got BP, BD, best actress and best screenplay but nothing else.
I think Life of Pi may get something big Oscar night once more people see it. It’s obviously loved by the Academy.
With Wallis now officially nominated, if they play the cards right, she can win!
But Siliver Linings is a force to be reckoned with. It would seem only Silver Linings, Lincoln and Life of Pi can win now.
SHOCKED that they didn’t nominate Affleck.
Leo snub was expected. They will give him a nomination and a win when he’s not trying for it, like Scorsese. Leo, make a f***ing comedy in stead of all this baity stuff, they are NOT BITING!
Les Miz haters must be over the moon that it failed in Best Director, cinematography and editing, since people seem to complain that those are it’s worst negatives.
Silver Linings in editing?! That’s just crazy. Do they really love it THAT much!
There’s, what, a month till final ballots have to be in? ANYTHING can happen until then!
Would love Argo and Zero Dark Thirty to win the Big Guilds, BAFTA, Globes and/or BFCA just to mess EVERYTHING up.
“The Sessions” is officially now one of those films where people in the future will watch it and think “SHE was nominated, but HE was not?! How is that possible?” Just goes to show how much harder it is for a man to get nominated cause male parts are better and have more competition. “Walk the Line”: Witherspoon was not better than Phoenix. “A Beautiful Mind”: Connelly was not better than Crowe. “Moulin Rouge”: Kidman was not better than McGregor, and he was snubbed. “Shakespeare in Love”: Platrow was not better than Fiennes, and she even WON without him being NOMINATED. The list goes on…
We are officially back to square ONE with these nominations. Two of the three new frontrunners for Best Picture didn’t even get a Best Director nomination from BAFTA – this is just crazy! 🙂
Unless Argo, Zero or Les Miz becomes the first film since Driving Miss Daisy to … you know.
Need to come back once more to say…..completely SICK about Bigelow. My deep abiding hatred for David O. Russell just continues to grow.
So Ben Affleck goes from being a Best Director frontrunner to being lucky he finally has a BP nominee.
as much as i am sad about just a few misses, they made up for it by doing a few evil snubs and surprises haha. honestly im not that upset at all. i really loved SLP so good on it for capitalizing on whats deserving. im also very happy for wallis and riva getting in and im glad some overrated performances did not so in a way good on them. ill definitely settle with a weaver nomination. she wasnt oustanding, but i didnt think she was overrated either and she was in one of my fav movies of this year..so it *works*. i wish they could of spiced up best supporting actor a bit but ill settle. ill settle.
Love the Beasts love.
Hilarious nominations. Disappointed in the Academy for no Looper, Dowd, Cabin in the Woods (fine, long shot but still). But kudos must be given to the inclusion of Wallis, Riva, Amour in screenplay and directing AND picture, and Moonrise Kingdom in screenplay.
Overall, it’s a wash. This makes BP /extremely/ easy to predict all of a sudden though.
If I had to guess, I’d say Lincoln then SLP and then Life of Pi in that order are the 3 competing for BP. I still think 1998 (Weinstein steals Spielberg’s lunch while the bearded one grabs Director) is probably one of the two most likely outcomes. The other being Lincoln sweeps the top two awards. Life of Pi surprised. The directing branch changed the whole course of how we are viewing these awards. One of the most surprising turn of events in years.
Woah.
Super stoked for Amour, but wow. Major middle finger to Bigelow. But why Ben Affleck? Nuts.
But woah! Michael Haneke + Benh Zeitlin upsets! So great! Other than having David O’Russell over Kathryn Bigelow AND Ben Affleck, that’s a great Director line up! I’m liking the Academy thinking for themselves!
So now BP is Lincoln vs SLP? That’s a much more focused race.
And Best Actress is Lawrence vs Riva, so Sasha got her wish.
I foresaw that John Hawkes snub. What a pity. But good they went with Phoenix. You can’t overlook a performance like that (although apparently you can overlook Kathryn Bigelow…)
Allowing a six year old girl working in a movie is child exploitation, and all evolved countries signed an agreement not to child labor and child exploitation least. Children’s rights. But otherwise the film industry see disobey such laws.
No Cloud Atlas for Best Original Score, yet Skyfall gets in. Ridiculous.
I think my biggest problem with the Bigelow snub is that she’s losing her platform to defend the film against the pro-torture naysayers.
Pretty sad day when the only thrills I got looking at these lists were for Best Costume Design (Snow White and the Huntsman – Colleen Atwood – and Mirror, Mirror – great work from the late Eioka Ishioka) and Best Visual Effects(SW&H again, and Prometheus).
Oh well.
Quite disappointed that Javier Bardem and Judi Dench (from Skyfall) didn’t make the BSA cuts.
Lincoln isn’t the worst film ever made in the history of world cinema. It was simply the worst film to be recognized with so many Oscar nominations this year.
Best sound? WTF? Best Production Design? WTF?
Hohhot enough with this “big boys club” nonsense. They just gave her the Oscar a few years ago. So maybe it is all the “torture” controversy that made them go other way. Don’t make everything about gender or race. Am sure we will hear it endlessly from Sasha and her nervous breakdowns
I’d bet on Life of PI/Spielberg split.
I think the one who screwed Leo and/or Jackson (just a deserving) was Weinstein. To my mind Christoph Waltz was co-lead, and to many the most likable character in DJANGO, so by placing him in supporting it was a done deal. He was going to be the one nominated.
The director noms have me scratching my head.
I have a feeling Silver Linings will almost sweep! Except for supporting actress although I would love a supporting actress tie! Lincoln is not locked. It’s not over until it’s over!
@ Kim and Vily
I totally agree with you. DiCaprio is like the opposite of Sally Field: “You really hate me! You really hate me!”
got two NGNG: Weaver and Hobbit/Art
I’d definitely vote for Weaver.
The rule of a snub of the next film after a win works again.
@daveylow
of course they will! But this also shows that campaigning doesn’t make such a difference in the end… Life of PI and Amour got in even though there was next to no campaigning but a lot of industry people spoke in their favor (Cameron for PI, Kidman lol for Amour)
If ever there was going to be a split year, its this year. Its all over the place. Harvey is now in a prime position to do his stuff and we all know he does that good – the presence of SLP in all the major categories is unbelievable considering the run up to the announcement today. I know Lincoln leads the noms but I do not feel it. I think Lincoln has HAD its head. I’m really feeling this is a two horse race between Life of Pi and SLP. But its definitely a split year feeling. Just you wait and see!!
After this, I would be biting my nails even if I was Daniel Day-Lewis or Anne Hathaway…
It’s not that Kathryn Bigelow didn’t get nominated that is appalling. It is that she missed out on the nomination after winning the most critic’s awards and hitting every other nomination along the way…Globe, Bafta, DGA.
Maybe the Golden Globes will give her Best Director this time to make up for last time when they went with James Cameron.
Those Hooper haters, you got your wish. But it came with a price….your darling BIgelow didn’t make the cut either. I am sure now you wish DGA nominees were just repeated for Oscars:)))
I can’t imagine that mother voting the nomination to a child, supporting child exploitation, supporting child labour, supporting immorality, supporting lazy parents… That is you support Sasha Stone, Oprah Winfrey, Susan Sarandon!
“Master” with only acting noms. No cinematography, no screenplay, no nothing 🙁
Sorry for typos above. Miss the editing function in AD.
Forgot !!glad so glad for Jackie weaver I like her but I think her role was ok I hope she keeps gettin better roles and exposure in Hollywood
I’m impressed on how they hate Leonardo they just don’t like him
Who will win his second Oscar in supporting actor?
It’s interesting there are only 4 newcomers at the Óscar, 2 in both leading categories
Not only did Bigelow miss out, I’ll bet she was at best 8th on the list.
“WTF ? David O. Russell over Ben Affleck and especially Kathryn Bigelow ? Way to go Big Boys Club, way to go !”
You got that right, phantom.
Now I’m worried with the BActor line up, though. Phoenix is the only one who can take the cake from DDL. I worry…
@Michelle
What are we supposed to do? Only hire adults and never make movies about children?
I don’t think I’ve seen such a strong and ballsy Best Director Lineup at the Oscars. Devastated that Bigelow was shut out but astonished by Zeitlin’s nomination, as well as Haneke’s.
Will Fox now have a campaign for Life of Pi now? The movie has made over $400 million internationally. It still hasn’t opened in Japan. I have several friends how haven’t seen the movie. Do something, Fox.
It does look like Lincoln is winning. I am baffled by the love for SLP. Best editing? Best director?
Most overrated film nominated.
Beasts in for four main awards, yet not Original Score!
I think there’s a difference between Ben Affleck and Leonardo “givemeafuckingoscarnow” Dicaprio.
OK, Moviegoers showing his ethic again, supporting child exploitation
This is what comes from a good, crowded year. I believe this will be the first time since 1965 when only two of the Best Director nominees match the DGA’s. I thought Haneke was in all along, but Zeitlin! More power to Sundance!
Biggest outrage: Makeup: Nominate the dripping latex on Anthony Hopkins’s chin but not the beautiful job done on Day-Lewis! The loss of makeup also keeps LINCOLN from tying ALL ABOUT EVE and TITANIC with 14.
Did the recent controversy keep Bigelow from a nomination? Or was it just the great year? After all, Spielberg fell out of the BAFTAs!
The loss of Affleck and Bigelow does certainly take a lot of the suspense out of the proceedings. But who knows?
The Academy officially showed that it just hates Leonardo DiCaprio.
Pretty much. 🙁
Ryan, you’ve no idea how wonderful that headline looks right now (maybe you do)
“Amour” is only the sixth film nominated for both Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film. I’m on cloud nine.
Could a Life of Pi Best Picture happen? Can that be a thing? 🙂 😀
Oops. My bad.
Wow. That was unexpected. What a difference this morning was. Mcfarlane & Stone made a great job today (Even if Seth couldn’t resist to make a Hitler joke). It was really fun. Maybe I’ll watch the Oscars this year.
Lincoln is the clear front-runner and Spielberg looks to be the winner for director, after his biggest competitors Affleck and Bigelow were snubbed. Lots of love for Beasts and Amour. A Skyfall surprise was only an illusion. Argo and ZDT were dimished and Life of Pi did pretty well.
In the end, the power of Harvey is alive and kicking: SLP got nominations across the board, even DeNiro and Weaver. Lawrence has the momentum now. The Master and Django got some support too, but SLP looks to be the challenger.
Something tells me Michael Haneke won’t return home empty-handed.
FIVE GOOD THINGS THAT I’VE LEARNED ABOUT THE 85TH OSCAR NOMINATIONS THIS YEAR:
1. Don’t underestimate the power of Harvey to carry a film. (The good: Django; Silver Linings Playbook; Kon-Tiki. The bad: The Intouchables; The Master)
2. Most of the Academy’s members are old, that’s why they deservedly nominated “Amour” for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress of the Year.
3. Most Academy members aren’t influenced by critics’ groups awards (see: Bigelow for Zero Dark Thirty; The Master for Best Picture; Affleck for Best Director).
4. Cinema is both a reflection and an escape to reality; just look at the wide support for “Life of Pi” and “Beasts of the Southern Wild”.
AND
5. The OSCARS has an altogether “fantasy” and “unpredictable” world of its own, and this year’s nominations obviously prove it.
Methinks we shouldn’t rule out Life of Pi, it could rank high on many ballots who don’t want to go for Lincoln and pull a surprise win that would avenge Brokeback’s loss.
These are shocking. It’s looking like in the past, AMPAS was definitely influenced by the guilds and other nominating bodies such as GG, but clearly they are not influenced by critics and Oscar bloggers b/c fuck all if there were not a bunch of big surprises that no one was expecting and didn’t match up with anything anyone was predicting.
So pissed about Bigelow. They gave into the witch hunt. I just saw ZDT and it does anything but glorify torture, that entire movie is so sullen and thoughtful and so carefully crafted by Bigelow to remain completely neutral so that we have to decide with our guts what was right and wrong. It was just masterful. I’m disgusted right now with this snub and the witch hunt on this movie. It is easily the most important movie of the year, maybe past decade b/c of all we are forced to question and answer in our hearts and guts.
I’m very surprised that The Intouchables wasn’t nominated for Best Foreign Language Film
“Director’s branch simply wants to keep it a men’s game.”
very very true.
WTF ? David O. Russell over Ben Affleck and especially Kathryn Bigelow ? Way to go Big Boys Club, way to go !
Sh*t! TDKR got no Oscar nom.
I can only imagine how happy Sasha is this morning… I think it’s now Lincoln’s to lose.
HAhaha. Wow. There’s some good stuff here (Haneke for directing, Riva for Actress, Phoenix for Acting, Anna Karenina for everything it’s nominated for) but, this child over Marion Cotillard …. it’s a little appalling. And those director picks?! Ben Affleck must be STEAMING (rightly so). No Bigelow?? ZEITLIN?! Smells like some kind of set up seriously.
And then throw in Weaver for Supporting Actress which I thought could happen as a surprise after I read why THR was predicting her, so ok, fine.
Happy that the Intouchables didn’t get in for Foreign Film as everyone (and me) were predicting. Suck it France. You didn’t choose the right film so you get nothing.
I have it in my mind that things would’ve played out kinda differently if we had those nominations in late January like they used to be…
Yeah,, Ben Affleck needs Harvey Weinstein like Leonardo DiCaprio. (rolls eyes).
By the way I really enjoyed SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, it would’t make my top 10 but I regard it as superior to ARGO, and of course LES MIZ. Tim Hooper is in deep distress right now all that “epic filmmaking” going unrewarded! won’t report graphically because apparently it’s “not funny”. In any case I would have preferred Tarantino or PT Anderson over David O. Russel, but I like all of his films, some of them are great, and the others pretty good. All in all an impressive filmography: FLIRTING WITH DISASTER, THREE KINGS, I ♥ HUCKABEES, THE FIGHTER, and SLP. Unlike some people. Also the biggest Shocker, and sweet sweet shocker is the Direction of BEATS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD being nominated! <3<3
No Streep? Just because she has three, they think they don’t need to keep nominating her for the 5th slot? She was ROBBED!!!!!!!
@Ryman
no need to “Hahaha!”
It’s not in my dreams, but in the real world. They accomplished (along with Bigelow) the best achievement in directing this year. Both Amour and Life of Pi did a lot better than everyone here thought.
Poor Ben Affleck. He hit everything, and made a great movie. He needs Harvey for his next movie.
It didn’t do Tarantino any good. And he’s been loyal all along.
The Academy works in mysterious ways… Sure Lincoln looks like the HUGE favorite now, but you just never know in a year when Bigelow and Affleck get ousted even though they were supposed to be locks.
Little surprised that Zeitlin missed a music nom, but he has to be the most improbable Best Director nominee in…ever
Congratulations to Sasha! Although Bigelow was snubbed and most (me too) are sad because of that, she was the ONLY one that said the race was down to Lincoln x SLP. And the only one who truly believed in Ben Zeitlin.
Guess the controversy killed Bigelow. And Argo was what we thought it was. SLP FTW!
I’ve been saying it for weeks, the controversy for Zero Dark Thirty would hurt the film.
That or the Director’s branch simply wants to keep it a men’s game.
I think SLP might surprise ftw. Getting nominated in all four acting categories….That’s pretty huge and difficult to accomplish. But it’s so worthy. I hate to give Harvey more gold, but…the film itself..is worthy!
PaulH almost got his wish of 1/2 blockbuster 1/2 Arthouse. Just needed a few more Arthouse.
Bravo, everybody here is happy for child exploitation
Well what else are you supposed to do with them?
Joao Mattos, The Master has three nominations, not two.
@Daveylow
“Supporting actor too predictable.”
True, but let me ask you this – WHO THE FUCK WINS THAT ONE?:) I have no idea. This year is great.
No Cloud Atlas for Original Score. Now that is a travesty.
No Bigelow ??????????? Why academy? Why?????????????’
To all you Life of Pi haters, thank goodness the Academy does not agree with you!
We have read on these pages for weeks that Bigelow and Affleck were MORTAL LOCKS.
Well at least the crowd here can marvel at their omission rather than focus on Tom Hooper.
Anyway so much for ARGO and ZERO.
Silver Linings Playbook is back in the game, even though O.Russell’s directing nod is puzzling. If it wins the Comedy Best Pic Globe and SAG Ensemble (very good chance!) , Lincoln better watch out! haha.
Poor Ben Affleck. He hit everything, and made a great movie. He needs Harvey for his next movie.
And honestly, those 9 best picture nominees are all pretty great! Any would be a worthy winner (except Les Mis) .
Spielberg is now a LOCK to win his third Oscar, but I’m thinking Best Picture is totally up in the air. All this love for Silver Linings Playbook… we may see a repeat Spielberg/Shakespeare in Love this year, with a win for Spielberg but a Picture win for SLP!
I kinda hate LINCOLN right now. And Best Supporting Actor is pretty much a worst case scenario for me. I can’t believe it’s all previous winners. They know Leo didn’t take home all those Oscars for TITANIC right? They remember that they gave them to other people and that he doesn’t have one?
btw, I didn’t like all the joking between nominations.
Harvey, you sonofabitch!
SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNSTMAN got Best Visual Effects nod as well as Best Costume!!! WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!! SO DESERVED!!!
I like Jackie Weaver but that was not a memorable role or performance.
I’ll remember to always predict lots of love for any Weinstein movie
Benh Zeitlin for Director shocked me. Talented guy but what happened Bigelow? Affleck?
Supporting actor too predictable.
No Marion Cottilard. Guess Academy didn’t like Rust and Bone.
Life of Pi for song was one of my NGNG picks. LOL.
Even though I didn’t want Russell in, it is a very shocking, and exciting, directors line up. Really interesting…
Haneke or Lee will win?! Hahaha! In your dreams, Akumax! Spielberg or O. Russell is getting this one!
Comment
Lincoln is the worst film ever made in the history of world cinema..FUCK YOU ALL
I think Lincoln and Pi have 11 each. Pi with no acting noms, Lincoln with 3.
Number of nominations:
12: Lincoln
11: Life Of Pi
8: Les Miserables, Silver Linings Playbook
7: Argo
5: Amour, Django Unchained, Zero Dark Thirty
4: Beasts Of The Southern Wild
It’ll be Lincoln vs. Silver Linings Playbook for the win.
Life Of Pi lacks actor support. Les Miserables failed to get a director nod.
Les Mis? Dead. Anyone that seriously thought Hooper had a chance was fooling themselves.
Argo? Dead. I cannot believe Affleck didn’t get nominated. I’m kind of sad about that.
Zero Dark Thirty? Dead. No Bigelow and the controversy going on?
Lawrence wins best actress going away based on SLP love and not so much ZDT.
SLP gets a slew of noms but won’t win many IMO
Lincoln is sitting mighty mighty pretty
One of my NGNG was right! All previous winners in supporting actor, I only miss Bardem.
My NGNG for The Master was almost right… two, only two nods. No PTA anywhere.
No Bigelow, No Tarantino, no Affleck, no Hooper. Most surprising Achievement in Directing nominations ever.
Also, all bets are off this year. In every category.
SAG matched 14/20 with the acting nominations. That’s the lowest in years, possibly ever.
Pi with 11 !!
Is this Lincoln’s Rocky?
If I counted right, 11 nominations for Life of Pi! I’m fucking over the moon!
So happy they did not go with Dicaprio star power but gave the nom to the most deserving of the whole django cast Cristoph Waltz. Leo was really good but Waltz was great.
Go Lincoln.
Was I right that when I predicted that Life of Pi would be 2nd most nominated? Anyone have the final tally?
“Bravo, the academy supporting the child exploitation”
Nominated for comment of the century.
It’s down to Lincoln, Beasts, SLP and Life of Pi, no doubts. But I think Lincoln will win .
I don’t think Spielberg is winning director. Haneke or Lee will win.
Anyone else seeing a repeat of 1998 with Spielberg grabbing Director and Weinstein stealing Picture?
I heard Russell and Haneke and thought it was a mistake. How could either Affleck or Bigelow miss?
Then I heard Benh Zeitlin. I srsly thought Seth MacFarlane was gonna say it was a joke.
Well…I loved Beasts, but better directed than both Argo and ZDT?!?
The director lineup may very well be the weirdest selection by the Academy in recent years (even including chosing that British TV director over Fincher…)!
Go NAOMI WATTS ,you will win.
Tour de Force Performance in The Impossible.
Hahaha, two of my NGNG almost came true : Amour for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress (it was still nominated in the foreign category though) and Beasts got Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay (but didn’t get supp. actor)
I am thrilled that The Pirates! Has been nominated for Best Animated Feature. The funniest movie I saw in 2012. Congratulations to Ardman. And no one was tipping it.
Les Miserables has no Best Director or Best Screenplay nomination, so it almost no chance of winning Best Film
Great that Skyfall has 5 nominations, including Best Cinematography for 10 times nominee Roger Deakins.
Two Snow Whites for costume 🙂
Going ham over here! I had a NGNG swap w/a friend and I got one right: 4 top awards, aside form ForLang, for Amour! So over the moon for this film!
12 nominations for Lincoln, 11 for Life of Pi
Les Mis and Silver Linings with 8 each and 7 for Argo
I think these are the top 5!
6 for argo 5 for zd30
I thought Bigelow did a great job with The Hurt Locker. I didn’t think the direction was a strength of ZD30. Still, what a shock.
DGA matched with Oscar 2/5. TWO OUT OF FUCKING FIVE!!!
WTF I love it!
Given the surprising love for Beasts, now that little girl could even win BA, for just playing the little girl….
Lincoln is our winner. Case closed. The Academy just made it so easy for us. Unless they’re planning on splitting BP/BD this year and they give it to Argo or Zero Dark with Spielberg taking Director?
I can’t possibly be happier for Behn Zeitlin and Quevenzhane Wallis. My favorite movie of the year checked all the main boxes!!
Oh and go Adele for Best Song!!!!!
Harvey Weinstein.
Period.
Love all the love for DJANGO. Tarantino snubbed. I can’t complaint the Director line-up tho. Strong Year. Over the moon for all the AMOUR love!!!!!
Overall I like these noms. Does Lincoln lead the count?
The director lineup is one of the biggest Oscar shocks in recent years.
This new timeline has shaken things up massively. And I LOVE it!
No Nicole Kidman 🙁 but they make up for it. Amour + Michael Haneke, Life of Pi + Ang Lee, Naomi Watts, Emmanuelle Riva, no The Intouchables in Foreign Language Film…
Oh my gah Director is crazy. Bigelow and Affleck snubbed. This means Steven Spielberg will win his third Oscar. His two main competitors didn’t make the cut. So shocking!
Too bad that ZDT is dead! It won’t even make it in the original screenplay category. I’m 96% sure that Haneke will win that category! Just look at the love Amour is getting! And Sasha how do you feel about the whole lot of love Beasts got today???!!! I feel absolutely ecstatic!!!
wow I don’t think I was ever so shocked (Bigelow snub!) and excited (Haneke nom!) at the same time!?!?!?!
Holy. Shit.
12 noms for lincoln
No “Lincoln” for Make-up. What the fuck???
I know everyone was surprised by Bigelow and Affleck Snub. But the biggest WTF moment was they didnt announce best documentary OVER best original song. WTF.
Ah, so that’s why Harvey waited till after the noms to go wide….
WTF @ Bigelow’s, Affleck’s, Cotillard’s, Hawkes’s snubs?!?! Gross.
LOVE Weaver and Waltz being included though. SLP is the first film since Reds to get nominations in all four acting categories! This is a promising sign that it’s likely to win at least one of the four, as history would indicate. Lawrence is the most likely, but a Cooper surprise would be a dream. Or it could go the way of My Man Godfrey/Sunset Boulevard and win none of them, but that seems less likely since that was an older precedent.
Disappointed at no Henry or Dowd either, but both were such longshots.
Pissed to see neither TPOBAW nor Looper nominated for Screenplays. But alas, whatever.
Also unique: the supporting categories are the first two categories since 1994 (Best Actress) NOT to contain a single first-time nominee. And I’m not sure how far back offhand, but Supporting Actor is the first occurrence that I’m aware of with ALL previous winners! Very interesting, and odd year.
No Dark Knight Rises love either, Snow White and the Huntsman even got 2 technical nods
slp has 8 noms more than les mis 7
The Director is the most shocking Category for me! I’m hoping Affleck wins the DGA just to say fuck you Academy! And no DiCaprio?!? Damn what does the boy have to do to get a nom? And the love for Silver Linings is so great for me! I hope it’ll be a sweep for them! Well it’s a tie for me between Weaver and Hathaway! And Watts for Actress? Love it! Shell get nominated and maybe win next year for the Diana pic!
It looks like Lincoln will take the prize at the end. If they decide to split BP/BD then Ang Lee may win his second Oscar.
Never mind the Academy ballot deadline occurring before DGA and BAFTA nominations, what about this…:?
The BFCA deadline was before these nominations. What if ARGO or ZERO DARK THIRTY wins tonight?!?!?
Wow!!!!!!!! No love for Ben. jacki weaver? No John hawkes!!!!!!!!! Surprises
No Perks for Adapted??
No Skyfall for Picture??
No Bigelow or Affleck for Director??
BUT JOAQUIN!!!
It’s between SLP and Lincoln. No question about it.
The director snubs are amazing. People, this paves the way for Lincoln to win at least 8 of their 13 nominations, including director and best picture.
Skyfall is still the best film…for me:P
f** the Academy! )))
SO SAD over Ann dowd
SO HAPPY for: Haneke, beasts, Riva, wallis, amour, weaver surprise and JOAQUIN!!!!!
Im not sure what the nominees were for Actress and Actor I wish someone would tell me.
THE GOOD
Jackie Weaver – YES
Russell – YES
Naomi Watts – BIG YES
Riva – YES
Amour in Picture – YES
THE BAD
Predictable Supporting Actor line up – No McGregor
Nothing in Foreign for The Intouchables
No Tom Hooper love – but expected
THE UGLY
The Master shut out of Pic and Director
Lots of predictable stuff. Just when you thought Harvey was out, he got Actor, Actress, S Actor, S Actress, Picture, Director and Screenplay – oy has that guy been giving plenty of BJ’s!
Interesting that every time Lincoln was mentioned there was silence whilst most other nominees were being applauded or whooped!
And finally – all credit to Emma and Seth for making that the best nominations telecast in its history! Looking forward to the show!
SO SAD over Ann dowd
SO HAPPY for: Haneke, beasts, Riva, wallis, amour, weaver surprise
This is fun… so many surprises …
Im happy yo see riva I told to everybody. No cotillard she was ok ,I’m rooting for riva to the win
I’m glad for wallis I like the beast
No Anne dowd good she was pathetic with her shame campaign
So sad no Rachel Weisz, and no Nicole but I’m sure Nicole is a lock next year for grace in Monaco she should have at least 5 nominations by now and she only has 3 !!
Amy Adams for that grey performance she was ok …
Pls give the Oscar to Sally
Wow — there is a tremendous support for Life of Pi – nominated even on Sound Mixing, Sound editing, & Song —
Bravo, the academy supporting the child exploitation
Soooo happy that the Academy is snubbing Tom Hooper for directing, but soooooo sad about Bigelow snub (she was IMO the best director of the year) 🙁
I have always had a bee in my bonnet about the use here of the word snub to the point where I wonder if people know what the word means. However, Bigelow was clearly snubbed. Affleck’s absence is certainly a puzzle.
no cinematography, no editing for les mis…. bp now seems out of reach
OSCARS BEST PICTURE NOM:
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
Lincoln
Les Miserables
Life of Pi
Amour
Django Unchained
Argo
Ben Affleck was robbed. An absolute travesty.
Go Steven Sp
ielberg and “Lincoln”!
Anyone else thinking that Lincoln has BP/BD completely sewn up now?
I hated the new visual programming of these nominations. Rather have the 5 screens behind the announcers any day. Got used to it.
What the hell was up with director? No Zero Dark Thirty or Argo love pretty much kills their chances, so I guess Lincoln just won best picture (unless it’s a Driving Miss Daisy thing, but that was a rarity). Bradley Cooper and Seth MacFarlane are Oscar Nominated but Leo DiCaprio was shut out. Silver Linings gets a lot of love, same with Life of Pi, looks like the critics and the Oscars are pretty much completely divided again this year (unless your from the LAFCA, who chose Amour for pic and director)
Anyone thinking what I’m thinking? Harvey did it again. And now he’s gunning for Lincoln with SLP.
OK everyone, get ready for some major drama in this site…Someone’s darling Bigelow didnt get nominated!!!!! Ohhh now there will be long articles, name calling and all that craziness….People will be called “idiot”, “sexist” and “right wing conspiracist”..and all others…..
Bradley Cooper over John Hawkes. How is that even possible, this is a travesty.
The Academy officially showed that it just hates Leonardo DiCaprio.
To pick Alan Arkin and Chrustoph Waltz over him just stabs me in the heart. Alan Arkin didn’t do anything in that movie and to even have Ben Affleck get snubbed is just a disgrace.
These people just watch the first 20 minutes and never even care to give credit to where it’s due.
Next year Leo will get snubbed again. This is such a fucking disgrace.
Fucking Hangover guy Bradley Cooper gets nominated and not Leo.
I give up. Peasants! :-((((;
WOOOOOOOW! Call an ambulance for rufus and Jeff Wells! LINCOLN is sweeping the Oscars.
I bet NO ONE could ever figure out what would happen in that screwed-up Directing category. Who could imagine both frontrunners would be shut out????????????
So the pecking order is Lincoln, SLP, Beasts, PI, and Amour. Shocked
they sure love Silver Linings Playbook!!
OMG, no Bigelow!
Nothing for Ann Dowd. That’s a disappointment. She should have WON the Best Supporting Acress Oscar.
I’m sad for Affleck. But congrats to Haneke.
amazing year! some surprises I did not see coming
These nominations are overall very surprises! I’m loving it!
Beasts. of. the. Southern. Wild. Wooooooooow.
And you wanna talk unpredictable? Best Director. Damn.
wow!!! AFFLECK AND BIGELOW SNUBBED!
Wow, only 2 DGA nominees made it.
Best Director was CRAZY, yo!!!!
they sure loved slp way more than argo
Naomi and Jackie. Yay!! Sad for Nicole Kidman though. So happy with the Amour love!
Director category was a riot. Argo is dead.
Yay, for Haneke and Amour!
Life of Pi 11 noms… IT WILL SURPRISINGLY WIN!!!!
NO BIGELOW WHAT A shocker!!!!
Amour 5 noms… great!!!
OSCARS BEST DIRECTOR NOM:
1) David O. Russell
2) Ang Lee
3) Steven Spielberg
4) Michael Haneke
5) Benh Zeitlin
Holy crap…no Affleck and no Bigelow?
Signed, sealed, delivered with Lincoln for the win with SLP as runner up
AMOUR!!!!! HANEKE!!!! ZEITLIN!!!!! RIVA!!!! What did just happened!!!!?????????
Ahaha, the director lineup got completely turned over. Too bad Bigelow didn’t make it, but kudos to AMPAS still being able to pull off some major surprises.
So much better than expected!
BEASTS and Jackie Weaver! AGHH.
WOW! No Bigelow.
So much for the 3 locks at director. HAREVEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK the frontrunner!!! Go Harvey!!!!
OMG BEN DIDN’T GET IT!!! WHY? OMG.
Biggest stunner by far…no Bigelow for Director. WOW. Death blow for ZDT’s chances.
What the HELL is up with Best Director?!
Nothing for The Perks of Being a Wallflower :(.
I cannot believe Bigelow was snubbed.
HOLY CRAP! Bigelow and Affleck snubbed?! This IS a big year for surprises.
AMOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I told ya so! I told ya do! I FUCKING TOLD YA SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I PREDICTED THESE FUCKING NOMS. WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
whoa. Best Director was weird.
WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?
sadness no moonrise kingdom…
No DiCaprio. Revolutionary Road, Shutter Island, J. Edgar, Django – four Oscar-worthy performances and not one lousy nomination.
I´m officially done Oscar watching. Take care, everybody.
Congratulations Sasha! You did it!!! 😀
No Bigelow for Director….wow.
Go Naomi, Q Wallis and Riva!!!!!!
watts for the win!!!
HOLY CRAP DIRECTOR
awesome noms!

Go Haneke!
OH MY GOODNESS!!!
slp lovefest

They like Silver Linings it seems
JACKI WEAVER!!!! WOW!
they sure love slp
Jackie Weaver!!!!
FUCK!!! No DiCaprio or Jackson!!! 🙁
old farts…
Or far fewer, Kane…
Here we go!
I’ve slowly prepared myself for the possibility that The Master will get the same nominations the BAFTA gave it…sad day if that’s true.
Sorry, should be Emmanuelle Riva.
Watching the live stream now. 1 minute to go.
I think I just saw Leslie Nielson sitting fourth from the front.
you guys help me out with the first complete list you can find, alright? THANKS!
Comment
For BBC World News subscribers, it’s on now, a lady and a critic (I guess) discussing Lincoln, Les Mis, Argo (for the time being), they getting ready for the Live as well.
For those of you who can’t get through to YouTube, you may well try BBC World News if you like. Cheers.
Go Emanuela Riva.
Go Ann Dowd.
Go Ang Lee.
This is always my favourite morning of the year – one minute!!!
8 BP Noms is my predictions! Here they are, in order of number of Noms they will garner…
Lincoln (11)
Les Miserables (11)
Life of Pi (10)
Argo (6)
Django Unchained (6)
Zero Dark Thirty (5)
The Master (5)
Silver Linings Playbook (4)
Good Morning Everyone! The Oscar nominations are here!! Hope everyone has their coffee handy
The Impossible, Naomi Watts, Riva, Ann Dowd and Looper for script and I’ll be a happy woman!!!!
Does E know something there guaranteeing Hugh Jackson gets nominated for best actor?
Who’s that stumbling around in the dark?! Who’s that stumbling around in the dark?! Who’s that stumbling around in the dark?! Who’s that stumbling around in the dark?! Who’s that stumbling around in the dark?! Who’s that stumbling around in the dark?! Who’s that stumbling around in the dark?! Who’s that stumbling around in the dark?! Who’s that stumbling around in the dark?!
steve, you won’t be able to find an online stream? That’s where I’ll be watching.
FIVE MINUTES!!!
BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD?!?!?
oh my they’re even showing the announcement on French tv news channels, waiting for cotillard and riva!
Paddy and Tero – I’ll be relying on your posts tonite because my backwater supplier doesn’t pick up that station and I can’t stream US shows in Canada.
Does anyone have a stream link not from youtube?
@tero & paddy
too many sleepless nights
i just watch the oscars live and catch funny clips from the globed on youtube…
but i applaud your endurance!
Sasha tweets
CNN has camera on http://t.co/qFFby5rW … #oscarnoms
Tero, 1am GMT, I think. So you might catch the end! No idea where it’ll be on though. I’ll be on here, trolling for a stream!
I look more forward to nominations morning than oscar night.
That used to be me, back when I had hope. lol Now I just hope the show is entertaining.
Paddy, what time the Critics Choice is on and where? GMT or CET time, please? Although, I don’t think it’s helping much, because I won’t be home until 5am from the bar I work in.
@Kjbacon
nevertheless awards season is a great excuse for non-West-Coasters to spend winter in sunny california!
I’m really. Let’s do this bitch!
Seeing this journey to it’s end.
Kon-Tiki must be in foreign language!
Once a year I hate living on the West Coast. It’s today.
I look more forward to nominations morning than oscar night.
Fingers crossed for all things Lincoln and for A Royal Affair in foreign language!
I predicted DiCaprio, De Niro, Dowd and Blunt in SUPPORTING… 😀
GO ZERO!!!!! screenplay, actress, director, score, editing, picture!!!!
>tfw no gf
This is gonna be terrible.
Not long to wait.
I saw a car with the registration plate ZDT on the way here, do you think its a sign?? HAHA
@paddy
sky news intl and bbc news intl – sky aired the bafta noms yesterday and they said they’re expecting oscar noms within half an hour 15 min ago.
@dane
i don’t have no E! 🙁 but i can go with yt… anyway noms will be all over the internet 30 secs after the announcement but it’s better to watch LIVE
Over 11am here in Brazil, perfect time for us. But I’ll probably skip the youtube streaming. Too much adrenaline shot in the vein. I’ll check after the fact.
I’ve just returned from a screening of Life of Pi. One of the most moving masterpieces ever made. Ang Lee sure knows how to bring out the raw human emotions on screen, just like Brokeback Mountain. Best Picture potential!
Gee! I just woke up!..made my starbucks Via!coffee..and ready!..jeje..i just hope theres alot of love for AMOUR and her star Emanuelle Riva and also for SKyFall to be among the final 10!!.
@Christophe
Merci bien for your concern, mon ami XD
Looking back, I am feeling like I am about to go out for a picnic rather than getting myself ready for the Oscars lol
Christophe – E! has an entire 30 minute show devoted to it this morning, so flipping over there would buy him more time. 🙂
Not sure about British news channels, Christophe. Which one are you watching? I wouldn’t expect them to show the nominations announcement.
Yeah, these are on at a great time in Europe. Bloody awards are an all-nighter. I wouldn’t have it any other way, though. It’s a lot of fun, being the only one up in my house, eating and drinking through the night, watching the Oscars. If they were on early evening here, it’d be shit!
I’m staying up tonight for the Critics Choice 🙂 EXCITED!
Sitting at an internet cafe in South Africa. So stoked!! Go Skyfall and Pi +++!
Nominate Ann Dowd.
Please, gods of Oscars.
I hoåe we get at least 2 mock nominations at the start and cancel them out at the end. Also: Once Upon A Time In Anatolia and Goodbye, First Love.
@thejviewer
good! but it lasts barely 3 to 4 minutes so you’re gonna have to work that six pack!
What if there were no major suprises (no real changes from guild picks)?
That’s my offical NGNG prediction! 🙂
My wish on Oscar morning is for Lincoln to lead the nominations. Being able to say that packs a lot of punch going forward. 6 long weeks until the ceremony after today.
watching british news channels, methinks they’ll show the noms since it was part of their title stories, otherwise i’ll just go with youtube.
Popcorn = checked!
Fried chicken = checked!
Six pack = checked!
Root beer = checked!
Internet connection = checked! [With backup power plan ready just in case]
Now spare a little candle save some light for me, I am ready for the third stage, Amandaaa…….!!!
Any other links? I can’t get on YouTube at work.
This is good timing for Europeans (approx. 3:30pm in Finland), but the show itself is a job to go through (from around 3am to 8am). Of course you can never get tired still. Excitement keeps you up.
Academy, make some history today! The world is waiting.
This was the biggest let-down of the whole season last year. I have no reason to expect anything different this year.
Won’t be surprised when the nominations line up almost exactly with the guilds
East Coaster here. I’ve been up all night!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cM3-uj3rOns&feature=plcp
Official Oscars channel on YouTube is the one I go with.
Fortifying with caffeine, hoping for the best, preparing for the worst.
I’m feeling sleepy… does it count? No, really, it’s like an energy boost, I’ve been awake for a while now and I’m expecting at least two surprises in the major categories, that’ll do it for me.
Joey, look a couple of threads down
I’m so pumped! Hoping for as much love as possible for my 4 favorite films of the year: Les Misérables, Moonrise Kingdom, The Impossible and Frankenweenie.
Great expectations here in Spain for Javier Bardem, J.A.Bayona and THE IMPOSSIBLE. Hope to see them in the nominations!!.
Any link to a live feed yet?
GO LES MIS!
Bring it on!
