“Looks like TDKR will have a hard time even showing up in the tech categories! At this point I would not be entirely surprised if it doesn’t receive a single nomination.”
🙁 🙁 🙁
The Hobbit had unbelievable sound design. Glad that the CAS realized this.
Although I haven’t seen ZD30 yet, of the remaining nominees in this category I’m most impressed with Skyfall — excellent work down to the last detail.
I’m expecting The Hobbit and (maybe) Lincoln to be replaced by Django Unchained and (maybe) one of the following: Life of Pi, The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers.
And on another note . . . go Frankenweenie!
“Lincoln” is a band-wagon nomination in this category. Totally undeserved.
When I think of other pictures which are far more worthy of mention in this category (“Prometheus”, “Argo”, “Django Unchained”, “Snow White and the Huntsman”, “Lawless”, “The Avengers”, “Anna Karenina”), it kind of makes my blood boil that these guys just vote cart blanche for Lincoln because it is “popular”.
Thankfully, the other four pictures mentioned in their listing are deserved. I would predict “Skyfall” or “Zero Dark Thirty” for the win in this category.
Here’s hoping AMPAS members will be a little more discerning with their nominations.
The Hobbit? What’s that doing in there?
I would have thought The Avengers had this in the bag! Hopefully, the Academy will swap out Hobbit for Avengers.
The only one of these I didn’t expect is Lincoln, but as a Best Pic frontrunner, you have to have it on your radar. I remember shots of the war-torn battlefield but no gunshots. Maybe TDKR or The Impossible will bump it though. A miss for Django Unchained and Life of Pi here as well. I’d actually be surprised if Django doesn’t get the Oscar nod in the same way that Inglourious did despite no CAS nod.
The only award voted on by everyone is Best Pic, all of the categories are decided by the subgroups – so directors only nominate directors and so forth.
When it comes to Foreign Film, Documentary and Short Films and stuff, they have special panels. And I think that’s even true for deciding the winners.
Looks like TDKR will have a hard time even showing up in the tech categories! At this point I would not be entirely surprised if it doesn’t receive a single nomination.
Thinking ahead to Thursday: are the actual Oscar nominees for Sound Mixing & Editing determined by qualified voters who work in sound or are they nominated by the entire Academy?
Lincoln in Sound Mixing. It appears to have some pretty impressive support, folks. Argo’s first miss from one of the groups.
