The Hunger Games – Judianna Makovsky
Mirror Mirror – Eiko Ishioka
Snow White and the Huntsman – Colleen Atwood
And the Oscar goes to . . . Jacqueline Durran for “Anna Karenina”.
This is probably the most obvious technical Oscar category to predict this year.
Whoever doesn’t vote for Durran should have their AMPAS membership revoked. I’m a big fan of Eiko Ishioka and Colleen Atwood, and their work this year is really great and they deserve their nominations. They have also won before. Time to spread the wealth. And Durran did beautiful, spectacular work on this film.
I disagree with the comment about “Anna Karenina” not being a good film. It’s one of my favorite movies of the year. There was more creative direction by Joe Wright in the first five minutes of “Anna Karenina” than in the whole boring dull-as-dishwater “Lincoln”. Speilberg mania! It just drives me nuts.
CLOUD ATLAS could have been nominated in all 3 categories! Ha!
My predictions:
Anna Karenina – Jacqueline Durran for Period Film
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – Louise Stjernsward for Contemporary Film
Mirror Mirror – Eiko Ishioka [R.I.P.]
Yeah, well, my favortie costumes this year were from LAWLESS. You guys remember. The movie that only exists in my head. XD (not funny)
Good to see Cloud Atlas
Excellent choices glad to see skyfall and the hobbit in there plus the small films too like anna karenina the best exotic marigold hotel and moonrise kingdom.
I love Beasts too but costumes being nominated?? Massive LOL
Retract! Only Skyfall and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel-especially the costumes in Indian were very beautiful.
Skyfall is the only film in Contemporary that I would nominate. I love the nominees in the other two categories. Perfect.
Woot woot for ‘Anna’!
It’s a shame they forgot the impossible for contemporary!
Anyway, quick predictions:
– Anna Karenina
– Silver Linings Playbook
– Mirror Mirror
Always felt the CDG’s nominees are a hard sell simply because we’re used to seeing fantasy/period films rack them up and the contemporary nominees are usually films that has been garnering award attention. It’s ashamed because I do believe ‘Skyfall’ (and in some extent ‘Exotic… Hotel’ did a great job costuming and they’re lumped into steamrolled nominees such as ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and Bradley Cooper’s garbage bag. Much preferred ‘Perks of Being a Wallflower’… if they considered that contemporary instead of period.
Ach, y’all, Skyfall’s got Contemporary sewn up. Pun definitely not intended, If you laughed, it’s your fault.
It’s sad to think that this was [Eiko Ishioka’s] last film designing costumes.
What a designer! Shit film, sure, but weren’t the costumes splendid creations? Far from her finest, sure, but a swansong, literally even!
Glad to see Kasia Walicka-Maimone nominated. She deserved an Oscar nod. But I hope Jacqueline Durran and Ishioka win. Anna Karenina’s costumes were A-MA-ZING.
I was very glad to see “Beasts of…” and “Skyfall” nominated, great works in contemporary costume design. I don’t think SLP’s nomination an absurd. Like my Production/Costume Design college teachers used to say, it’s not about how fabulous it looks but how well do you tell the audience who that character is by the clothes he wears. And I think the costumes of SLP really tell us about its characters’ mood and social/local caracteristics.
But no one done so impressive work as Jacqueline Durran in “Anna Karenina”. Her costumes, along with Sarah Greenwood’s art direction and McGarvey’s photography, made History. “Anna Karenina” may not be a good picture but it’s extremely beautiful, visionary and original in its visual and deserves all awards it can get.
Beasts is a wonderful film but best costumes?
Matt, happy to see The Hunger Games too.
How can wa forget that amazing “firewear”? 🙂
Argo deserves win. 🙂
Happy to see the Hunger Games get a guild nod. I thought it was going to surprise with an Oscar nomination for Makovsky.
Durran and Ishioka should have their categories sewn up, if you will.
Contemporary is a bit of a joke, but you have to appreciate the irony of putting Bradley Cooper in a garbage bag. Stjernsward or Lewis for contemporary, maybe?
In defense of Silver Linings Playbook, that. DeSean Jackson Jersey didn’t pick itself
Yes, how common is it that the 5 Oscar nominees are all selected by the CDG? Often one misses. I wonder if this is a reflection of the Oscar nominations coming out first, or if it was just a more obvious year, with fewer alternatives. (I can only think of Hitchcock and the foreign A Royal Affair not being on this list.)
contemporary film category makes me laugh. mark bridges will win this award simply because he was lucky to work on the popular movie without really doing anything.
These are excellent choices. This guild always seems to reward true excellence in its craft (and not necessarily band-wagon their nominees like some of the other guilds because of “popularity”). They reward deserving costume designers.
I was so glad to see the late Eiko Ishioka nominated for “Mirror Mirror” (a terrible film, but the costumes made it worthwhile watching). A past Oscar winner (for her great work on “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”), she was a true artist . It’s sad to think that this was her last film designing costumes.
Also very glad about the costume designs in “Anna Karenina” and “Snow White and the Huntsman” being recognized. They are also outstanding.
I love the fact that all three of these CDs made it into the top 5 Oscar race this year.
Just saw 5 Broken Cameras doc. I would say it should win, but I’m guessing the Jewish contigent of Hollywood won’t be voting for it.
