I thought her saying “I beat Meryl” was funny. I’m sure even Meryl Streep got the joke and found it funny. I would love to hear a comment from her on it.
Anyway, I finally saw Silver Linings Playbook last night and it was fantastic! (My #2 of the year after The Perks of Being a Wallflower) Jennifer Lawrence was a total knockout! She deserves to win “Best Actress.” I love Chastain and she’s great in Zero Dark Thirty, but she wasn’t amazing. Not as great as Lawrence in this film, IMO.
Lawrence herself seems great. She’s funny and talented.
A bit sad that every comment, every gesture, every mannerism has to be picked apart and disected these days…when did we lose the ability to laugh????
it was a joke!!!! it was not hilarious or charming, but it was a joke and it was HER speech. She deserved her win and she had fun during HER speech. Sounds like a bunch of bitter critics here!!!
@RyanAdams
I just don’t see it as bad form and I don’t understand why others think it was. It was a joke. She shouldn’t have to defend it. I hope she wins the SAG because of this proving her people don’t care. And I wonder if she loses at SAG and Oscar that people don’t blame this for it because that’s just silly. She has a strong chance to win this with the whole controversy toward ZD30. Loss of votes for Jess may mean a win for Jen. I hope anyway.
I knew as soon as JL said what she said about Streep it would be controversial. She came off as cocky and unpolished, and now she’s defending her comment. I can easily see Riva winning the Oscar.
… she is still annoying.
It’s been really interesting reading the proliferation of comments emanating from the Globes telecast. The forensics is fun, if not sometimes exhausting to wade through. I was in the camp that loved Anne Hathaway’s speech and felt it sincere. I also thought Sally Field received the salute, rather than resist it as some suggested. I loved Jodie Foster’s speech. It did not ramble, it was considered, and difficult and brave, while cleansing for her at the same time. She was elegant and sharp while maintaining the level of disclosure she wished. I too bristled at Jennifer Lawrence’s Streep quip. But i guess i assessed her as a 22yrd old or whatever she is and the thrill of winning also conveyed something about her style of delivery and maybe her competitive nature. But who wouldn’t be?
Just like it can seem as if two people can sit down and watch the same movie and emerge and discuss it as if they had seen two different ones, the same applies to reactions to speeches. I love that the panoply of perspectives gets aired on this site.
I throw away my copy of “Famous Quotes from First Wives Club” in 1998. Therefore I missed the joke. At least with James Cameron’s “I’m King of the World!” came from The Lion King.
I’m tired of people saying they can’t see a great performance by Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty. Maybe because she’s not crying over a dead child or having a blow up in a generic diner or isn’t about to die with a careening log barrelling towards her head.
What she does is give a carefully modulated performance that changes so subtly over time that it’s almost imperceptible. Everything about her changes, from her voice, to her inflections, to her emphasis, to her body language. If you just took ten stills of the film and put them in order you would see how her posture slowly changes. This ia a person slowly gaining confidance, slowly become more self-assured as time passes. Heck, even in the shots of her sitting at her desk she’s evolves into from a calm, unexpectant demeanor, to one that’s angry and determined.
Her evolution over the first two hours is extraordinary. And, I’m sorry, but that final ten minutes is just icing on the cake. This is easily the best performance by a lead actress since Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry, and possibly even Meryl Streep in A Cry in the Dark.
I honestly first thought “First Wives Club” when she said it. And those who didn’t..WHO CARES!!! It WAS a joke whether you got it or not. Let her be. She probably won’t win the Oscar anyway but I kind of hope she does now just to spite you guys.
I honestly first thought “First Wives Club” when she said it. And those who didn’t..WHO CARES!!! It WAS a joke whether you got it or not.
That’s why it’s become an irritating issue for some of us, Chris.
I got it. It’s not that I didn’t get it. I just didn’t think it was a very funny or very smart.
Most of us understand that it was supposed to be a joke. Sorry if we don’t all laugh at everything a star decides to say. Shame we can’t all be more like Samuel L. Jackson’s Stephen who laughs uproariously at every dumb thing Calvin Candie says at Candieland.
@Ryan Adams
Really? You’re comparing “I see you’re wearing your cocksucker suit” (which wouldn’t have made sense anyway) to “I beat Meryl”?
Wow. You and Sasha really dislike Jennifer Lawrence.
Wow, Backson.
In fact, I really really like Jennifer Lawerence. I like her a lot. That doesn’t mean I can’t think she says things sometimes that are ill-conceived.
Christ, I’m so tired of being labeled a hater just because I don’t think everything a person chooses to do is always the pinnacle of perfection.
The “I beat Meryl” remark sounded off-key to me, and I think it got Jennifer’s speech off on the wrong foot. Why can’t I say so?
As much as I absolutely adore Jodie Foster’s speech, as much as she made my heart soar, I think she stepped off on the wrong foot by quoting “I’m Fif-tee!” in authentic Crazy-Lady voice, and dwelling on it way too much before anyone had a chance to see she was going for a casual idiom. It threw millions of people off and I think some viewers never got past it.
So now you can jump to the conclusion that I really dislike Jodie Foster. And you’ll be wring wrong wrrong.
This will probably make a few people angry, but now that Zero Dark Thirty has expanded giving others to see it. I hope more people will see what I saw. A great movie, with a very well written story line; however, I am really confused on where they are seeing this supposed outstanding acting performance by Jessica Chastain. If she is to win, it will because too many people are on the bandwagon that Jennifer Lawrence is too young. If one of these fine women are to win this year it needs to be Lawrence as Zero Dark Thirty was about the movie, not the acting. This is why I think so many people are going out there way by giving Lawrence such a hard time about anything and everything she does, in order to get more people to not vote for her who clearly delivered the better performance.
Why is it that we always pit actresses against each other and tear them apart? Never see this with the men races. They all gave really good performances and it’s really a matter of taste in the end.
I’d take one thousand JL quips over another second of Hathaway’s desperate mugging and faux humility.
Nah, if a young Jodie Foster was cast it would of been Clarice Starling all over again. She would have played the role the same way, and it would have been too jarring. Chastain’s delicacy, I thought, worked brilliantly as it was contrasted with her harsh surroundings and with her less and less delicate growth.
Wish I could see that tweet, stupid work blocked twitter, and I’m sure Meryl doesn’t give two shits but Lawrence is still a little wet behind the ears to be making those kinds of jokes.
It’s funny but I also thought of Jodie Foster in the role of Maya. I had seen ZDT after the Globes however. But yeah, she would have been perfect. There were times Chastain seemed too delicate.
Here’s Bette’s tweet about JLaw: https://twitter.com/BetteMidler/status/291754224545587200
I didn’t even realize it was a quote. I thought it was funny anyway. I’m sure Meryl gives a shit.
Quote or no quote, it was completely out of the blue and who the eff is going to remember First Wives Club anyway. Super awkward way to start off her acceptance speech, and I’m glad it wasn’t well received to be honest. She kinda needs to get back down to earth a little, although I’m sure Weinstein is not helping her on that front.
Speaking of Weinstein, her joke about him killing someone was awesome and she saved herself with it.
All that to say, Lawrence is only fourth best when it comes to the Actresses this year.
1. Chastain
2. Riva
3. Watts
4. Lawrence
So, to say that she doesn’t deserve the Oscar is an understatement. She’s getting way more publicity than Chastain, who seems to be her chief rival, so knowing the idiocy of the race Lawrence is most likely going to walk away the winner. It won’t be the first time a more deserving actress gets snubbed.
That said, I’m pulling for Chastain and if not, a hopeful split vote between Chastain and Lawrence that hands the statue to Riva and/or Watts. That would be something.
gotta say, tend to agree with you, Nik G
Telling me, “It was a joke!” isn’t enough to convince me every oddball thing that comes out of a person’s mouth is funny or cute.
We know it’s a quote. “I see you’re wearing your cocksucker suit,” is a quote too. But it would be a clumsy way to begin an acceptance speech.
Right, Reno, that’s why Jessica Chastain has won more Best Actress awards this season than any other actress — because “she couldn’t live up to” the role in Zero Dark Thirty.
Jessica Chastain is the engine driving Zero Dark Thirty, she is so focused and intense and carries such authority in her big scenes with the CIA men as well as the interrogated prisoners. It is a very tough performance, “hard-boiled” as someone recently said. Her release in the final few minutes of the film is palpable. That she won’t give in to the audience by being cute, sexy or sentimental in the picture is admirable.
And I’ve seen her in Mama which, yet again, displays her vast range and ability. Roger Ebert raved about her performance claiming she is one of the very best.
On the Jennifer Lawrence front, I very much liked her in Silver Linings Playbook but maintain that the role and performance are on a different planet than the other nominees.
One word to describe this thread: meee-owwww.
Put those claws away, you guys make Perez Hilton look like Colin Firth.
By chance I saw three of the major showpieces for actresses this year tuesday and wednesday.
The Impossible: The incessant focus on the single family gets a bit annoying after a while, and there is a lot of crying and shouting after the pretty realistic tsunami. The acting is very good though, especially Watts who gets lots of physical punishment and the oldest kid who gets a lot to do; he may even be regarded as the lead.
Silver Linings Playbook: I don’t really get David O.Russell as an important film maker; I kind of liked Three Kings, but felt both Huckabees and The Fighter had way too much overacting (probabaly by choice). That seems to be kind of his thing; to go so close to too much when it comes to acting and clichés as possible without crossing the line. He often succeeds, but not always. I liked SLP better than his latest films, but the last hour you knew what was going to happen, and it did, and it kind of worked, but not entirely. I like Lawrence, but she just plays too young for her characers arc; she is very good at times, and she has something special, but physically she feels wrong. Cooper was surprisingly good, and his nomination is kind of understandable.
Rust And Bone does nor do anything especially original either, it is kind of an edgy SLP in reverse. The actors are superb though, especially Matthias Schoenaerts who is a very physical actor. Cotillard also does great work, and the movie is tough but actually quite uplifting and positive.
Having seen four of the best actress nominees I would rank them as Riva – Watts – Lawrence – Wallis (adorable, but not sure if great acting). I would place Cotillard between Riva and Watts.
Count your blessings, folks. We could be suffering through endless Kristen Stewart appearances. Compared to K-Stew, Lawrence has the charm and wit of Noel Coward.
Yeah, that last 30 to 45 minutes was reprehensibly bad. And it’s a shame because it looked like the first hald was building to something special.
Lots of pretty ignorant comments on this thread about Chastain “not doing much”. Subtle roles often require fine nuance, and a poor performance in such a role can ruin a movie. If Chastain had been “hammy” or lacking the requisite skill to make her character such a central part of ZD30, then the film itself would not be what I consider the best of 2012.
I watched SLP last week and was incredibly disappointed. All these forums contain comments from people who love this movie, and hate that one. SLP has its fans, but in no way would I consider it Oscar calibre. The writing was ridiculous. This was probably lost on most, but the gambling aspect was way beyond plausible. That a pro-gambler would sacrifice an extra ten points on a spread was stupid, that a bookie would offer to “parlay” that bet with a random dance show score, of which he knows nothing, is one of the most idiotic plot devices I have ever seen. Sadly, I’m sure these points would be lost on the average Academy Member.
I loved both Chastain and Lawrence in their movies, but it´s actually Riva´s performance who kind of changed my life. That whole movie changed my life. I didn´t even know a movie could do something like that.
Don’t you love the irony?
Meryl isn’t nominated, yet she’s a huge part of the best actress talk because of that joke!
And by the way, everybody adored Chastain two weeks ago and now – since the film turned out to be a not really big contender – she’s overrated?! Come on! Chastain is great in the film! Lawrence is very good and actually the only really good thing about SLP! Riva for the win!
@Rebecca
Actually the german translation of “I beat Meryl” in The First Wives Club is “I was better than Meryl”. Not a real big strech.
But let’s face it: Who was IMMEDIATELY thinking of this movie after Lawrence made the joke? I mean it’s not really a famos movie line.
If she’s said “Meryl, I took your baby!”, everyone would have known the film she was quoting.
But well, whatever.
I admit, my first reaction was “And? So did plenty of other women before you, so…. no big deal.”
And I thought everyone was sure she’d win the Comedy Globe.
*lol*
But hey, nice to see that Meryl still is the talk of a few days even in an awards show where she was not even there (poor Glenn-finally a small moment for her, yet she lost the attention to Meryl-again) and in year where she’s not even nominated for an Oscar.
Of course she would have laughed out loud at Lawrence comment. We all know that. 8)
Rebecca,
Re Lawrence, it’s fair enough that — as you’ve said — you don’t like her joke. And I am not really trying to convert you. : )
However, in my opinion, folks don’t need to see that movie first to appreciate the joke. The joke per se — in English — is already near perfect with or without the movie reference.
“… here in Germany the movies are translated into german! [sic] So, if I had seen the movie I wouldn´t notice this joke!”
Fair enough. Sometimes, dubbed version, especially in case of literal translation, helped ruin virtually just everything including the comedic elements. This is one of the reasons that despite technically speaking English as second language, I prefer (English) original soundtrack version – with or without subtitles. (Well, maybe, except for Guy Ritchie-directed movie “Snatch”, lol – this is one of those movies you need really to see first to get my joke….) xD
I didn´t like her “joke”, because there are many people who didn´t watch the movie and here in Germany the movies are translated into german! So, if I had seen the movie I wouldn´t notice this joke!
Yeah Maya totally didn’t do anything. She only was the main character of the movie and the entire story was told through her eyes.
Her drive is what drives the movie. It’s silly to say Maya doesn’t do anything since it’s her scary determination to get Bin Laden is what makes the entire plot.
Now for Jennifer, I haven’t seen SLP but I have seen Winter’s Bone. She is definitely a great young talent who I want nothing but good things for. But I’m not sure that she’s truly a frontrunner like so many think. The last time an actress 25 or younger won the BA Oscar was Hilary Swank for “Boys Don’t Cry.” The Academy doesn’t really go gaga over young actresses so I won’t be surprised if Riva takes the Oscar.
ZD30 was a great film but I wasn’t impressed by Jessica Chastain. Like someone said here, she didn’t do anything. I’m glad she’s nominated but a win? No way. If she gave a stunning performance or had more to do in the film, then yes I would 100% want her to win but she doesn’t deserve it for this film.
I think what’s hilarious here is that no one even realizes that Jennifer Lawrence is actually mistaken in her movie reference in the Jay Leno interview. She says Bette Midler is referring to Goldie Hawn’s Golden Globe in the “I beat Meryl” comment, but in fact that scene is where Bette is referring to Goldie Hawn’s OSCAR. Not her Golden Globe. There is a separate scene much later in the film which involves the throwing of a Golden Globe award, but that is NOT the “I beat Meryl” moment.
I actually wish Meryl was there so they could show her reaction -most likely laughing.
Jodie has basically one emotion which is tense which can be interesting when one is young. She never studied acting and like Julia Roberts takes pride in it. I reckon it has played a big part in her lack of compelling roles in the last few years. Once youth is gone talent needs to rise to sustain a career. See Jessica Lange/Julianne Moore for an example of talent.
Jessica Chastain carries the entire movie, she is there even if she is not in the scene, and in most scenes she is asked to be and not to act, sometimes she just has to stand there and let us understand maya’s thinking through her subtle face reactions. In fact what is extraordinary is that her character embodies both a woman and the evocation of a number of intelligence operatives, and she nails it so well. To me Maya is unforgettable, a modern approach at acting in a masterful film.
When I click on the first video it says ” the uploaded has not made the video available in your country”
What’s wrong with MY country fuckball?
I lost the game. 🙁
It’s interesting that Jodie Foster appeared on the Globes since she would have NAILED the role of Maya ten/twenty years ago and added more to it. I think Lawrence proved she would have nailed it, too, in her scene where she takes DeNiro and the room full of men to town at the end of SLP.
As for Lohan, poor thing. She knew she’d get attention from her remark, and that’s all she’s good at these days. She really has no sense of humor. Just because you once worked with Streep doesn’t entitle you to that misguided opinion. Seriously, I hope she’s getting help! Her brain seems compromised.
Maya in ZD30 is a great role. But Jessica Chastain just couldn’t live up to it. 2 hours into the film and I was not impressed with her. The last 30 minutes though was awesome and scintillating especially since Chastain was scarce and I got to witness the directing genius of Kathryn Bigelow. I’m sorry but she was the weak link in what was otherwise a virtuoso acting ensemble. Jason Clarke, Jennifer Ehle, Mark Strong and even James Gandolfini ran circles around her. If she wins the Oscar, it’s the role and not the performance. Everyone has his/her own guess on why Bigelow was snubbed by the Academy’s directors branch. Mine is Jessica Chastain’s lackluster perf (indirectly). ZD30 as a whole is a great movie, well-deserving of its NYFCC and NBR BP wins.
People are really still talking about this?
I hope someone gets Meryl on camera soon to tell them all to F off and congratulate Jennifer.
I love her so much. I love that she doesn’t act like she’s curing cancer or something. She has no ego but she is such an amazing actress. I can’t wait to see how she is in her 30s if she’s this good in her 20s. Wish her all the best.
I really hope Jessica Chastain doesn’t win. It’s not that I don’t like her. It’s the opposite actually but her role in Zero Dark Thirty was the most boring part of the film. All Maya did was sit in an office. She stood in the back watching the interrogations and torture doing nothing. How can Chastain win for that? She was just a mere accessory to the film. And a lot of people give flack to Jennifer Lawrence for being an “accessory” in Silver Linings too but the thing is, she at least gave a moviestar, stunning performance that shook us all. I’ve never seen her like that before. Same goes for Naomi Watts for the Impossible. She gave a lot more than Chastain did.
I don’t understand how anyone could have taken her Meryl joke seriously. She said “jokes aside” right after. Cool girl and congrats to her.
I can’t believe how much this has been blown out of proportion. Harvey must being throwing a shit fit. I’m not even rooting for Jennifer per se, but even if you didn’t catch the reference (I didn’t, despite having seen The First Wives Club), it was obviously a joke, and not even an off-color joke. She certainly wasn’t the first woman to beat Meryl for an award and make a comment about it (light or not), and knowing how likely it is for Meryl to turn out more nomination-but-not-award-worthy performances, she probably won’t be the last.
@Jerry, Naomi Watts in The Impossible doesn’t have a typical Best Actress arc either, but (and I haven’t seen ZDT yet) the film does suggest the toll of the post-traumatic stress and survivor’s guilt that real-life survivors experienced. Also, it’s just an incredible piece of filmmaking, if you aren’t bothered by emotional manipulation or at least accept it for what it is in this film, which is an accurate portrayal of a haunting real-life disaster and tragedy.
All things considered, Best Actress this year is a shitshow.
Mark Wahlberg, on Leno, just said he’s going to be appearing with Ted on the Oscars.
“That would be like a punishment to me, you know, like, a judge, it would have to be like a six-month probation, you have to write down a random thing, you know, that nobody cares about….xD” [CBS blocked my host country so I am not sure if the embedded version contained the segment…]
Lol. U gotta luv da gal.
LiLo, did you hear that? xD (She’s sooo clever that she strategically gave Dave some sort of overture seeing that he started putting it aside, walked him back into it and before you knew it, bang! The Lilo bits and bites… That’s how JLaw seduced the world.)
Anyway, the “I beat Meryl” joke was perfect in timing and context whether she literally took it from the movie or not (here she said it was the reference from it, though).
(But you’ve got to love Dave when, sort of being dismissed, he was apparently a bit being annoyed — “What do I know!? … doing the dang show for thirty yeaaars!…” — at the end of the clip; talking about hey-kid-you-crossed-the-line kinda thaang….) : )
Jerry,
I agree. In fact, I wouldnt mind if she won Oscar this year, just because of her 2011 performances, especially The Help. If this was her first movie or so, I wouldnt be much supportive of her win.
Overall, she is a good actress, but her character in ZDT didnt ask much of her. Still I think I would be happy for any actress but for Wallis’ win this yeaar for various reasons. As I repeatedly said before, I wish Marion Cotillard were nominated:(
@Film Fatale:
I loved Zero Dark Thirty but let’s not act like that film asked Jessica Chastain to have any character arc or asked much of her in general. She was to be either angry or have the “focused” look for 2 hours and 30 min. She only changed expressions for 1 min at the end. ANY of Jessica Chastain’s great performances in 2011 would beat the one in Zero Dark Thirty. Any of them. If she wins the Oscar this year I will just consider it being owned for her wonderful 2011 acting.
—————————
Haven’t seen The Impossible yet (I hate emotional manipulative films) but does Naomi Watts do anything but cry miserably for her son and husband the entire time? What’s her arc?
filmFatale, I smell the green ooze of jealousy toward a young performer who’s backed up her youth with 2 great performances this year. She was the heart and soul of The Hunger Games, the anti-Twilight (as in a novel turned movie done RIGHT. And if she wins Oscar next month, we HG fans will gladly claim a half-share of it as recognition of J-Law’s excellence, as well as in SLP.
SNL will be a great chance to show off her refreshing side. Fortunately, she doesn’t have the burden of being in the worse-r movie, because in terms of Razzieness, Mama>>>>>>>>>>>>>>House @ end of the Street.
And she DID beat Streep. Deal with it.
When was the last time did people talk about something that Lindsay Lohan??? Poor thing, she is probably quite jealous, as understandable, because she could have been something, but she chose a wrong path. And now a young, pretty and talented actress reminds her of what she could have been (even though I dont think her talent was anywhere close to J.Lawrence).
I am sure if Meryl had been in the audience, she would have laughed at the joke and probably given a hug to J.Lawrence.
Aragorn,
You know all those critics, critics groups, Golden Globes, SAG, and AMPAS only want to have sex with her. Including the gay males and straight females. They are all changing their sexual orientation over Jennifer Lawrence. That is the only reason she is winning awards and being nominated, her performance has nothing to do with it. LMAO, I love bitter people 😀
The best part of all this is all the Hollywood people who pretend to watch these films but can’t remember the famous lines from them. Will ferrel and Kristen Wiigs skirt at the Globes was right on point.
Ugh…Film Fatale, really? She’s “unpolished and inarticulate, and curt and silly in interviews”? Why? Because she doesn’t take herself seriously and she doesn’t come across as a self-aggrandizing, narcissistic, pompous windbag like most actors and actresses in Hollywood? I like her because comes across as real and self-depricating. It’s refreshing. Remember, she reads lines for a living, and gets paid a shitload of money for it. And you can tell she loves doing it. There’s a joy and a freewheeling lack of vanity and smugness to her performances on film, and her real life “persona”, or whatever it is. I’m a fan; sorry she’s not as elegant or “disciplined” like other Hollywood starlets.
Film Fatale,
so all those critics groups and even AMPAS nominated/awarded her for nothing?
I think her turning down Inside the Actors Studio was a nice move. I am glad she is not like some others who never miss an opportunity.
http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/01/14/why-golden-globe-winner-jennifer-lawrence-turned-down-inside-the-actors-studio/
Whatever. She was sublime in Winter’s Bone and that’s it. She has proven herself to be unpolished and inarticulate, as well as overtly silly and curt in interviews. I know, I know — she’s “young” the apologists will say.
Further, in no world does her SLP character or performance belong in the company of Chastain, Riva, Watts and even Wallis. She put spunk into an underwritten male fantasy healer role that could not be more fantastically concocted if it tried. That’s it. She cries a tear at the end but has precious little arc.
Please, Oscar, let this girl pay her dues and show stronger chops and a little versatility before passing up the other fine nominated ladies in favor of the “it girl” — a moniker for magazine covers, not the Oscar podium.
So was “I’m king of the world,” but I’ll bet Cameron regrets using it in his Oscar speech.
She would have had less trouble and gained a ton of points if she said, “Yippee-kay-ay motherfucker!”
