Lynne & Jerry – You both raise very good points!! When you speak with anyone who has seen Les Miserables, and you ask them about the one thing that stood out for them from the film, EVERYONE I have spoken too has said Anne Hathaway’s performance, and particularly her rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream.” So, in my mind, it makes sense that Anne Hathaway has literally become the face of the movie irrespective of her small/supporting role. It also goes to show that the argument “Quality over Quantity” wins again as she left such a massive impact in only a few short scenes. As such, the interest is in her rather then Hugh Jackman or Russel Crowe makes sense and we will continue to see her throughout the Awards Season giving interviews and accepting awards.
Lynne,
I think some people think Anne is playing the Oscar game because she seems to have the smallest part but doing two times the amount of press as Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. So it seems more like campaigning to solidify her Oscar ‘win’ not just to promote the film.
>Jennifer Lawrence has been busy filming The Hunger Games so Bradley Cooper has done most of the promotion. Jessica Chastain has been busy doing her show on Broadway but doing press here and there when she can. They both haven’t been as in our face as Anne.
Rj, people are confusing “Oscars Game” with promoting a film. Anne has a film to promote, the film wasn’t going to gross over 100 million on its own merits. She has a duty to promote the film, she’s fulfilling her obligations. It’s funny how nobody is mentioning Jennifer “overrated” Lawrence and Jessica Chastain, both have graced several covers.
It really bothers me when ppl say that Anne Hathaway is playing the Oscars Game so she can win the award for Best Supporting Actress. She is doing press/giving interviews like anyone else, and it’s definitely NOT her fault if all the magazines want her on their covers. . .this is her time so let her enjoy it! She arguably gave the BEST performance of the year, and is HIGHLY deserving of ALL the attention she is receiving for her work in Les Miserables! I’m very happy that she WON another 3 critics awards today, and I’m looking fwd to hearing her acceptance speeches at BCFC, Golden Globes, SAG, BAFTA, and the Oscars 🙂
@Mohammed,
Just for you. Read the last few paragraphs at the end. @YahooNews:Bigelow Calls Torture ‘Reprehensible’ -http://t.co/K29IRron via @YahooNews
errp…The French Connection, I mean ARGO, picks up speed.
It’s not about a moral middle ground. The film was not about torture. It was about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Torture was a documented part of that hunt. The film plays it that way and allows the audience to determine how it feels about torture. I don’t need Bigalow or Boal to tell me how I should feel about torture. I appreciate the fact that they didn’t try to make a moral statement about torture. I don’t need to be preached at. If ZDT was a in depth study on the use of torture, I would feel differently. But since that’s not what this movie is, I don’t expect the filmmakers to try to “enlighten” me on how bad torture is. ZDT portrayed real things that happened in a real way. And the reality is that there are millions of people that feel torture was necessary and helped catch Osama Bin Laden. We are done a disservice if we are told otherwise by whitewashing this controversial issue.
Well the certainly do love Argo and The Master. Too bad Argo like Up in The Air lost momentum a while ago.
@representDLV: You are one of the few holdouts on this, Even Sasha who champions ZD30 has given up on that. To believe that it’s possible to make a movie that’s neutral on torture is like believing it’s possible to make a movie that features slavery, that has the slave-owner as the protogonist but that’s primarily about the hunt for a murderer. There isn’t a moral middle ground on this kind of issues.
“Argo” was great. It just wasn’t the best film of the year.
@helios – I completely agree. Argo is a well crafted movie and that is all. It has no BP material.
Wreck-It Ralph >>>> ParaNorman
Jessica Chastain vs Jennifer Lawrence
Philip Seymour Hoffman vs Tommy Lee Jones
Who will win?
Jessica Chastain will win.
Leonardo di Caprio will win.
Argo > Zero Dark Thirty
Argo and PTA.
Oh, it sound like music for me… 🙂
Lincoln never had heat except actor and screenplay but that can all change at the Oscars. Critics mostly went for ZDT and Argo, even The Master more than Lincoln. Haven’t seen Lincoln yet but ZDT is my pick so far. Definitely a much better film than Argo.
I guess this pro-torture card will be played out until the Oscars.
Is Argo picking up speed – feels like it. Wonder if this is also happening amongst AMPAS members. Certainly feels like the Lincoln heat is diminishing with the exception of DDL wins.
“Clearly more and more people aren’t comfortable with pro-torture messages in their films. Good on them.”
ZDT didn’t have a pro-torture message. Give me a freakin’ break. The only message it had was that torture happened. Which it did. Should Bigalow and Boal just pretended that torture didn’t happen and play that off as real? The movie was not about torture. It didn’t take a side. It simply portrayed a factual account of what happened.
@Jose Ramon : The Hunger Games fandom will go crazy if Jennifer Lawrence AND Philippe Seymour Hoffman win the Oscars 😀
Maybe now Anne Hathaway can relax and stop playing the Oscars game a little too hard. She has it in the bag but she seems so desperate. She was phenomenal in les miz.
For some Zero Dark Thirty love, check out the Alliance of Women Film Journalists awards:

Dinatzie: Clearly more and more people aren’t comfortable with pro-torture messages in their films. Good on them.
Argo is by far a superior product. Unless one believes torture is ” gritty” and a pro stance is ” edgy”.
What’s got me excited this year is that it truly is an unpredictable year, which makes it so much more entertaining (okay, maybe the nominations aren’t so unpredictable, but the winners have been all over the place. I don’t think anyone can be called safe–even Daniel Day Lewis or Anne Hathaway.
Jessica Chastain vs Jennifer Lawrence
Philip Seymour Hoffman vs Tommy Lee Jones
Who will win?
I’m so glad about Jessica! She’s a killer in that part and should definitely take home the Oscar.
But WHY ARGO? Seriously, people should just watch Zero Dark Thirty instantly after watching Argo and see how it should have/could have been. Of course, it’s a more Hollywood take on a difficult subject. ZD30 is more realistic and takes chances. Never mind.
