Oscar Bits and Bites – “Is it hot in here or is it just me?”

Globes ratings best in six years [EW]

Torture is too important an issue to allow a film such as “Zero Dark Thirty” to be the final arbiter. The facts need to play that role. I call on the Senate Intelligence Committee to release its report as soon as possible in order to end U.S.-sponsored torture forever.

Django and race relations:

Django Unchained, the new movie by Quentin Tarantino is playing to mixed reviews. Whites will view and review this movie one-way, and blacks will view it another way. It is not a traditional film, and it confronts black images and stereotypes head on. It forces an honest discussion on America’s race relations.” [HP]

The Carpetbagger dives into Jodie Foster’s speech, what she did and didn’t say.

“Being an artist is a way of saying, I am here, and this is what I stand for,” she said. “And I will never be tired of that.” [NYT]

Apparently Tommy Lee Jones heard Ed Harris couldn’t make it, so he did his best to emulate him. Cheap shot!

Love Jodie Foster. Now and forever. I have to laugh at some people on this forum who are like what’s-the-big-deal-about-coming-out? Oh, no big deal at all. Name all the athletes currently playing professional baseball, basketball, football, and hockey who’ve come out. Oh you can’t name any? Riiiiight. That’s because there aren’t any. And so a culture of warped manlihood persists that keeps these men injured for the rest of their lives. Someday, some guy is going to be the first major team sport athlete to come out of the closet, and that will help gays everywhere. I get that Foster didn’t HAVE to come out, no – but she just removed one more excuse from that guy.

It’s funny that Hermene Hartman, the linked author, says “Whites will view and review this movie one-way, and blacks will view it another way.” You wouldn’t be crazy to assume from just that sentence that one group would see it one way and one group another. In fact, some whites hate it, some whites like it. Hartman (who’s black) loves it – she writes “The movie is great for the black psyche no matter your station in life” and so does Todd Boyd, but obviously Tavis Smiley and Spike Lee aren’t exactly agreeing with her or Boyd.

Hartman ought to correct her own second sentence.

Django is playing to mixed reviews? Between the 89% on RottenTomatoes, the 81 on Metacritic, and the A- Cinemascore, not to mention the numerous nominations and wins so far, it seems pretty universally liked among critics, the public and the industry. Where are the mixed reviews? Spike Lee doesn’t count.

  3. Tommy Lee Jones lol. I wondered whether he was playing along or not. He might well not have been. Or he might have just been pissed off that someone had shoved a camera in his face.

    Other reaction shots I liked:

    – Taylor Swift looking totes unimpressed at Adele’s jokes
    – Anne Hathaway laughing a bit too hard, unable to mask her shock and embarrassment at Sacha Baron Cohen’s ‘parting the curtains’ joke

Great show! Glad the ratings were so good.

  4. what a grumpy old man. such a disappointment. can this lack of sense of humor cost him an Oscar? in my book it does, though his performance stays the best in lineup imo.

  5. AnthonyP

Just saw ZDT. Big whoop on the torture. Totally overblown reaction from the Hollywood elite.

@brace : TLJ is trending all over the internet, even TMZ has picked up on his grumpy look. Just don’t bet on him and Joaquim winning an Oscar, it won’t happen after last night.

“Someday, some guy is going to be the first major team sport athlete to come out of the closet, and that will help gays everywhere. ”

It might help those that are already gays to accept themselves and or feel better about themselves for being gay or lesbian but some actor or sports figure coming out as gay or whatever will not influence or affect me in any way shape or form or many others for that matter and besides why do something so personal and private in a formal format. I suppose she was under a lot of pressure to do so or maybe she was just a little tipsy with drink. Ah, well different strokes for ….

@Ryan Griffen….”Django Unchained” ….it seems pretty universally liked among critics, the public and the industry. Where are the mixed reviews? Spike Lee doesn’t count.

Right on. Great movie. BTW, you can count Spike Lee but you can say he doesn’t matter.

  9. Bryce Forestieri

I heard Tommy Lee Jones is disliked by many in the industry.
They also love him and respect him dearly.

  10. I’m not saying this out of my sympathy for Tommy Lee Jones, but the Wiig/Ferrel bit was corny. Grumpy face well deserved.

  11. The ratings for the Oscars are going to be big too. I now think it was genius on the part of AMPAS to move up their first phase voting. Voters couldn’t act like sheep in just ticking off what the DGA or Globes tell them to vote for. Now everything is unpredictable so viewers will tune in to see if their favorites win. Plus the GG and BFCA’s didn’t matter. So I see what you did there AMPAS. Bravo you sneaky devils.

  12. Bob Burns

Rev. Killmer’s statement deserves more than an entertainment writer’s “whatever”….

“The movie shows detainees giving up information after being sleep-deprived, struck, and otherwise abused. Graphic scenes depict waterboarding and the use of stress positions.

It strongly implies that torture was the main technique used to interrogate detainees and that the information we gathered from detainees was obtained because of torture. This is contrary to the claims of former interrogators, nearly all of whom claim that humane techniques are more effective than torture — and, in fact, often argue that torture makes it harder to obtain reliable information.

This is Hollywood’s version of reality about torture. It is a false reality that does a disservice to our many effective interrogators who obtain critical intelligence through humane methods, as well as the public who deserve to know the truth about torture.”

Bigelow and Boal are the Daisy and Tom Buchanan of this issue… wander in, fuck up, wreck lives and retreat back into their money.

Were they misled by the neo-cons or was it just a dumb-fuck drama decision that they stupidly portrayed as truth?

[Part of the GG opening (not the Clinton clip)]

Amy Poehler: “Meryl Streep is not here tonight. She has a flu. And I hear she’s amaaazing in it!”

Hahaha…. One of the better lines I’ve heard recently. To be honest, while I have no problems with fart joke, I wouldn’t mind some more of relatively clean shots like these either.

This year’s GG was engaging as expected; […] probably couldn’t ask for more.

    Thanks for Clinton clip, Sasha.

  14. TLJ is TLJ …. He doesn’t give a f*** … And that’s what makes him cool and a genuine iconoclast. He’s also a great actor.

  15. God, I hate Tommy Lee Jones so much.

  16. @Deniz

I’m sure you’ve got a shit load of sane and logical reasons to hate Tommy Lee Jones, but please name just one.

  17. LOl Django playing to mixed my ass

    89 on rotten tomatoes
    81 on Metacritic
    87 on BFCA
    A- Cinamascore
    8.8 IMDB score

And last a 160 million Boxoffice finish.

Somebody needs to do there homework because everybody is loving this film.
