Tonight the American Society of Cinematographers announce. We’re waiting on those. Here are the nominees:
Anna Karenina, Seamus McGarvey, ASC, BSC
Les Miserables, Danny Cohen, BSC
Life of Pi, Claudio Miranda, ASC
Lincoln, Janusz Kaminski
Skyfall, Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC
Prediction – I think it’s down to Anna Karenina vs. Life of Pi. I could see Deakins getting it too.
Go Deakins! Some of the most beautiful shots I’ve seen this year came from Skyfall (the silhouette fight scene on the skyscraper was nothing short of incredible). He’s long overdue for an Oscar and I could see him winning finally for this film, which will hopefully win the ASC as well. 🙂
“This is your opinion.”
Gee, really? Really?
NGNG: Argo
I know, others beat me to it!
Since Life of Pi was the best in this field, I guess that makes it the underdog.
I like Paddy’s NGNG, though.
Seamus McGarvey for Anna Karenina, hands down. Not because it looks pretty. As McGarvey himself has said, the DoP Oscar usually go to a film with pretty sunsets and waterfalls. But Karenina has robust imagery. Startling imagery. It is highly stylized which might work against it, but since we’re talking about the ASC who know from lighting, they will know about controlling lighting.
Pi for me was about controlling the post-production end.
My prediction: Life of Pi
NGNG: Argo
I’ll be damned. This is one guild ‘Argo’ was passed over rather unfairly. Prieto gets less love than he deserves.
I am sorry. As much as I’d like to see Pi win, it’s Argo time. So, I predict Argo for the win. . . .
OH WAIT! xD
Don’t worry be happy [spotted David Lindsey’s comment], problem solved. I am with David — “ARGO for the win in an unprecedented write-in vote.”.
Ha…. I know it was a joke (a brilliant one too).

Seriously, my safe pick is Life of Pi.
Hey look on the bright side! At least Argo can’t win this one!
I predict ARGO for the win in an unprecedented write-in vote.
daveylow — Deakins has won the ASC a couple time, plus their lifetime achievement award. He’s also won some BAFTAs and Independent Spirit awards, but never the Oscar.
well, this was expected of course, but NOT my choice! Ha! Kushner is tops here by a distance.
“Les Mis getting a nom there (and in the DGA) confirms the main problems with these guilds”
This is your opinion. Not a fact. You are entitled to like what you like, but please, don’t try to sound smarter than everyone else. Because you will fail.
Bryce in a truly perfect world, these two would be amongst the five for sure:
Florian Hoffmeister (The Deep Blue Sea)
Fred Keleman (The Turin Horse)
Still, you did nice work there!
Here we go with the LES MIZ attack again. Geez. It got nominated because it was very well photographed. Simple.
It won’t win of course.
The winner will be deservedly:
Claudio Miranda for PI.
A TALKING CAT!?! > ARGO
Why do you think is Pi vs Anna? I can’t see like that except for the reason being you hate Skyfall so much.
Anyway, is Pi vs Skyfall (both have been collecting awards for its cinematography)
I think both are well deserved winners but its Pi to lose. Being chilean like Miranda, I’m more than fine with that.
Deakins has won this prize a few times, hasn’t he? I don’t think Skyfall is his best work, though I admire him. I think Miranda will win this.
Deakins deserves to win, and hopefully get the Oscar as well. He did an incredible job on Skyfall.
In a perfect world in my utmost humble opinion the nominees at Oscar would have been:
LINCOLN – Janusz Kamiński
THE MASTER – Mihai Mălaimare, Jr.
AMOUR – Darius Khondji
PROMETHEUS – Dariusz Wolski
MOONRISE KINGDOM – Robert Yeoman
Special Mention for Fucking Awesome
NO – Sergio Amstrong
Other noteworthy
THE RAID – Matt Flannery (he should have been hired instead of whoever the fuck shot the atrocious hand-held sequences in THE HUNGER GAMES)
At least there was some logic to Slumdog winning SAG (characters people loved; weak/unappealing competition). The camerawork is one of the most disorienting things about Les Mis. However, there were a few pretty shots, like of the curtain in front of Fantine’s bed.
I could see Skyfall taking the guild, and deservedly, but really, this is Pi’s to lose.
I’d be rather surprised if Life of Pi didn’t win.
I’m conflicted between Skyfall and Life of Pi. I remember seeing the Skyfall scenes (the ones with Judi Dench looking glum and Daniel Craig looking through the window and into the bleakness) in the theater and whispering to my friend “if I didn’t know any better, I thought we were watching one of those indie films that would get a Cinematography nomination” and sure enough I saw that it was Roger Deakins in the credits.
I thought he should have won for True Grit (actually, I would’ve voted for Black Swan) but both films were better than Inception which ended up winning and I’d love to see him finally win an Oscar.
However, I do think Life of Pi deserves it this time.
Les Mis getting a nom there (and in the DGA) confirms the main problems with these guilds awards- populism and a tendency to vote for their favorite movie overall, rather than the ones that actually did the best work in their category; SAG has that problem too (remember Slumdog Millionaire winning Best Ensemble Cast?).
How in the hell did LES MIZ get nominated??
Oh. go Pi!
That’s weird – their website says the 10th.
Maybe we could just ask Variety who won, then the date wouldn’t matter.
