The Supporting Actress category appears to be locked. It’s Anne Hathaway‘s to lose. Part of it is who she is right now in the industry, who she is to the Academy itself, but the other part of it is her work in Les Miserables. For some reason Hathaway has become the object of scorn – maybe because she’s “too smart” at the mic, taking out time from her speech to celebrate veteran Sally Field, being a little too verbose, perhaps, saying a little too much. But to me, those are the dumbest reasons imaginable for a person not to win an award. It’s as if the whole world has turned into high school bullies and we’re all acting like it’s okay. It’s most definitely not okay, not in any way. Either she gave the best performance of her career or she didn’t. It should only come down to that.
So the critics had fun poking at her performance and the way Tom Hooper shot her performance – all in close-up. And it’s probably a big deal that he mom played the part, and Hathaway lost weight to play the part and even shorn her lovely locks so that now she must do awards season without them. But to me, there is no denying what Hathaway’s performance does to you when you’re sitting right there in front of her. To me, Hooper’s vision of what he wanted to do with Les Mis is wrapped up entirely in Hathaway’s performance. It’s melodramatic, brutal, tears-inducing. But it is also one of the only performances in the film that knows it’s in a film. That means, Hathaway translated her performance outward, which none of the others — save perhaps Hugh Jackman — do.
Anne Hathaway for the win, but if she has any challenger it’s Sally Field. I’ve always been a peripheral fan of Field’s, having grown up watching her in films but I never really got her skill as an actress until her performance as Mary Lincoln. Even though Fanboy Nation doesn’t take kindly when their hotties are swapped out for “older women,” Spielberg did the right thing in casting her. Why, because with age, wisdom and experience comes thoughtfulness, skill and insight; you would have to have lived a good long while to get the many shades of Mary Lincoln – her bi-polarity before there was treatment for it, her infamous rages that sent the president walking the streets, her miles-long grief at the death of her children, and her constant fear that something would happen to her beloved husband all radiate beneath Field’s many layers. Every tiny detail put in Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book about Lincoln is in Field’s performance. Mary Lincoln was a smart woman stuck in a time when women couldn’t go anywhere without their husbands. Much of her madness was likely centered around her stifling lack of rights. If Lincoln is about anything significant it’s about equality in America. The theme pulsates throughout, not just of slaves but of women back then, LGBT men and women, and immigrants today. We see Mary’s grief and frustration through Field’s full spectrum performance.
Amy Adams in The Master – of all of the young actresses working today Adams has range and versatility. She can really do it all, from perky leads to darker supporting as she proves in The Master. Adams is poker-faced throughout, cradling her mysteriously pregnant belly, holding so much power over the man in her life and yet being, in many ways, powerless. Like Field’s Mary Lincoln, Adams’ is very much the support of the males, existing only to serve them. What does she want? Who is she really? We never know. In the film she represents the hypocrisy of a sexually radical group that pretends to be chaste. The Master is all about the underbelly being preserved along with what we see on the surface.
Helen Hunt, like all of the Supporting Actresses other than Anne Hathaway, exists as someone to aid or help a man through his own character arc. But Hunt’s is really the only lead disguised as a supporting part, which gives her an unfair advantage. Warm, kind and exposed, it’s always a moving experience to watch Helen Hunt on screen. She shows herself completely naked, at almost 50. For that alone she is worthy.
Jacki Weaver is one of the sweetest things about Silver Linings Playbook. She is impossible not to like as she hovers in the background about ready to fall apart. She provides the backbone for the family – in typical David O. Russell fashion, mothers are there to stay come what may. Weaver is interesting because she plays the polar opposite of her turn in Animal Kingdom. That shows extraordinary range. That she got both of these parts and was nominated for both is impressive for a woman hitting the awards race at such a late age.

No one says anything about the fact that JLawrence is at least 15 years younger than BCooper. I saw a preview of the new Pacino film and his leading leady is that chick from Revenge: the YOUNG ONE, not Madelyne Stowe. Women notice that kind of discrepancy, but Hollywood just accepts it as status quo.
For that reason, I feel this is Sally’s last chance at a major role in a big film. All her peers have gone to tv (accept Meryl). It ain’t right.
Anne will other chances, many more chances. While I agree that it should be only about who gave the best performance of the year in each field without all the BS. But in this scenario, I can’t help it. I want Sally to win the big one.
Ms. Hathaway overacted. It felt contrived and the weird way she contorted her face made me laugh not cry. I was severely disappointed. She also overacted in her Globes Speech. She just wants it too much. It’s a turn off and I am not looking forward to her sobbing when she wins on Oscar night.
Short of going on a killing spree (even then as long as she makes bail) the award was Anne’s with the first Les Miz trailer showing the weight loss, cut hair and massive weeping. Fantine is the ultimate victim spending 15 min crying and suffering. And as for the shaven head thing give me a break. Vanessa Redgrave shaved her head way back in the 60’s or 70’s to do the very critically acclaimed Playing for Time. Had Hathaway been nominated for TDKR I would be hard pressed to say she didn’t work hard for the award because in my opinion she was one of the best things about TDKR. Let’s see how much work Hathaway gets when she turns 60 something.
Amy Adams – I didn’t think that she did anything monumental in The Master. She has a Janis Joplin bio on the horizon and I’d save a lead vote/win for that.
Hunt – She was fine in The Sessions (though I felt like she lose her accent when she was humping in bed.) If the performance was good – seeing her (startling) full-frontal distracted me from whatever she was saying….
Fields – for the person that stated she was woefully miscasted because of the age difference – if Mary Lincoln was 10 years younger than Abe – I felt that the great makeup job on Abe (at times) made him look the same age/even older than Mary. It was just hate to separate ‘reel life vs. real life’ while watching this, knowing that Fields is older than DDL…
Hathaway – for me, it was all the pre-hype leading to this performance. (You would’ve thought that her 1 song was being proclaimed a landmark in cinematic history.) After Fantine did her bit, I thought, ‘Is that all?’
Weaver – she was like a bit of sunshine whenever she appeared on the screen. Her character eased the tension, but, it wasn’t anything worth rewarding.
Well said Sasha. What i think it comes down to is that for the short time that Anne is on screen in Les Mis she holds your attention for every minute of it. You feel everything she’s singing and she performs in a way that you don’t feel like your watching another number in a musical. Her role is almost like a “Guest Performance” which is why people might be bitching about it as well.
It’s hard when there are such wonderful performances. I really liked Jackie Weaver in SLP, even if people are disagreeing with the amount she actually did. On a side note,I really hope Amy Adams wins something over the next few years, she’s very much deserving.

It’s a shame about Julianne Moore, she’s just not getting the roles one needs, or if she is offered them she’s declining them for some odd reason. As for Bening, she seems to get a good role every three or four years. And then, Joan Allen, well her time has passed. But I don’t mourn for that, she was good but it won’t go down in history as a huge oversight. Unlike Glenn Close who definitely should have won by now.
I find it funny that people always say a certain actor will eventually win one done the road and doesn’t necessarily have to win “this” year. People used to say that about Julianne Moore, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Joan Allen and with each passing year it seems that they may not get that chance. For whatever reason it seems like Amy Adams is destined to join that list of excellent actresses. A nomination is win unto itself, but I’m sure they would prefer to just get one already.
I would love it if Weaver pulled a Beatrice Straight. Just like SLP, Network had nominations in all 4 acting categories.
I liked Sally Field in Steel Magnolias. Sure, the whole film is overdone sentiment, but if you let yourself get caught up in it, moments of it are quite powerful. The scene in the cemetary when Field loses it is really quite affecting. I’ve never lost a child, heck I don’t even have a child, but to behave that way seems completely within the parameters of possibility. Field does hysteria very well, in fact, I’m not sure there’s anyone out there that does it better.
With that said, Hathaway deserves this Oscar.
Amy Adams is now in the “Cate Blanchett/Kate Winslet OverDue” territory zone now. I think in the next 4 or 5 years we will see her win her 1st Oscar finally. I love Hathaway, always have – ever since the Princess movies which my neiced forced me to sit through. I rooted for her for Rachel Getting Married, and loved, loved, loved her TDKR. But not as much in Les Mis. I have a problem with an appearance this brief being nominated in a field where four other actors gave such well-rounded, mult-dimensional performances. Besides, I’m waiting for hte Garland biopic for Anne to finally get an Oscar.
I’m hoping for a Sally Field upset. Younger viewers who only know her from the Boniva commercials or minor roles in Gump, Doubtfire etc…I can only say that Sybil was an epic event when I was a kid. Pauline Kael wrote that year that no other actress – in film – gave a better performance than Field in Sybill. And in Norma Rae, she became the first prototype for a strong, flawed female character empowered by injustice, ala Silkwood. Norma Rae was THE movie of 1979 and it remains one of the most iconic female performance in film.
I don’t think she will get a third, but she gets me vote for what she was able to do with a difficult role. She had to find the real person underneath the myths and centuries-long perceptions. In a way, she had a more difficult task than DDL because all she had to go on were peripheral accounts.
I couldn’t put my finger on why I went from rooting for Anne during her underdog Oscar campaign for Rachel Getting Married to cringing at her current Oscar one for Les Miz – it’s the Rachel Berry effect! Whoever said that is dead on – that character’s obsessive need to be the star and the singing of that song on the show has made her life narrative blur with Hathaway’s!
From the two separate Les Miz performances slash auditions on the Oscar stage – once with Jackman hosting, again when she was – to the long year of faux earnest awards collecting, it’s just felt like this slong, desperate, Berry-ish slog to winning an award.
Too bad it has to be hers. I wish Field would win. I also wish the aforementioned Jennifer Ehle had been nominated, along with Ann Dowd and Carmen Ejogo (great performance lost in Sparkle).

My favourite is Hunt, Adams is also a worthy contender. I haven’t seen Weaver and I haven’t liked Field – she’s obviously the weakest nominee this year.
But Hathaway will win this.
Nice tribute to all 5 women, Sasha – it is always nice to be able to wax lyrical aobut the Supp Actress race – one of my faves over the years.
It is refreshing to hear Helen Hunt given her dues – it seems to have been fashionable to knock her, but i loved all the performances in As good as it gets, and hers was brimming with compassion and heart. Her directorial and performing achievement in Then She Found Me was significant, and again her power on screen was wonderful.
Does the best performance really ever get the prize? I think it is Hathaway’s to lose, but that said, i still can’t comment on Sally Field as Lincoln opens here Thursday (finally!!!!!). Amy Adams is my faovurite actress this last decade – and i thought she was fine in The Master, but Hoffman and Phoenix are just so incredible, and Adams wasn’t used nearly enough in that film for me. It was good to see a darker, steelier side to her.
Anne Hathaway fits so many archetypes for the Award – and it is a supporting performance, and it is cogent, and she is a media darling and industry delight it seems. But i don’t underestimate Sally Field either. But while I can live with 3 time Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis and Steven SPielberg, I would struggle with 3 time Oscar winner Sally Field. And yet, i too grew up with Sister Betrill and Gidget and her early film work. My bad for relegating her into the same box as Helen Hunt – why should this TV star win Film awards.
So proud of Jacki Weaver too. I had such a crush on her growing up – she was as cute as a button, and funny – she used to do a lot of panel shows requiring to be witty and fun , and she was always both.

Hathaway feels like someone whose career should have an Oscar at some point, and this is the point. It feels correct that it be a Supporting Oscar because in truth she does better in ensembles (Brokeback, Dark Knight, Les Mis) than she does in leads (One Day, Love and Other Drugs.) There is something not quite winning about her when she dominates a film. So she wants an Oscar and doesn’t seem able to hide it, who cares. It must be exciting.
Having said that I would go with Sally Field had I a ballot. But kudos to all the ladies here. Well deserved nominations, all.
Bring Him Home was the standout part of the stage show both times I saw it. Hugh Jackman and Tom Hooper failed enormously on that one.
1. I far and away preferred Hathaway’s performance in The Dark Knight Rises – a role that capitalizes on her effortless appeal and all-grown-up sexual allure, but which still allows her to be powerful and relatively complex.
2. Quite apart from preferring her performance in a different movie, I just didn’t like her very much in Les Miserables. As juicy as the part sounds, it’s actually pretty insubstantial and one-note, and playing that one note LOUDER and BIGGER doesn’t help much. Nor does it help that Hathaway was grievously under-served by her director.
3. That said, I essentially like and respect Anne Hathaway as an actress. She was terrific in Rachel Getting Married. She’s always game and committed to her performances, whatever the role or quality of the material. The hatred of her is totally out of proportion to her perceived crime (being excited about winning awards for her work…?)
4. That “I Dreamed a Dream” parody video is just plain not funny.

Exactly! That’s one of the many reasons why Les Miz was a huge disappointment (I loved the Broadway play). Tom Hooper was mostly to blame, but alas, most of the actors also missed the mark. Hugh Jackman was good but for “Bring Him Home”, arguably the most moving song in the show, but he simply couldn’t sing it (listen to the Broadway original, Colm Wilkinson, who plays the priest in the film). And what was with the rapid pacing of that sequence? The camera should have come to a grinding halt and hovered, but instead, it rushed and ruined that song.
I also feel Les Miz had no business being nominated for art direction, not against Moonrise Kingdom and The Master and Beasts, among others. The students’ barricade looked preposterous, it was far more impressive on stage. The sewer scene was annoying too, just a sewer, the usual rank. Poor lighting, little imagination there. Hopefully Anna Karenina or Life of Pi will win.
I find it to be hugely disappointing that Jennifer Ehle isn’t in this race.

In acknowledgement of the remark about: Have people suddenly decided it is okay to behave like a high school bully? This trend seems to come and go in any industry. Where nothing is done until it goes out of control and results in the loss of credibility to those that are instigating, fueling, or at least, going along with juvenile antics. As for who dereves the win for Supporting Actress? It appears with Hathaway’s win at the Broadcast Film Critics, Golden Globes and SAG awards the likelihood of her winning at the Oscars are extremely in her favor. There are and always will be people that dislike someone else’s artistic ability no matter how good or bad they may be. If a actor or someone from anyother profession is disliked by a peer, or worse, person of authority; that particular person will find it very difficult to gain credibility or promotion potential within their work environment or industry. Personally, Anne Hathaway will walk away with the Oscar as many are expecting to happen.
I wonder if, had Les Mis not come out in 2012, Hathaway would still have gotten a supporting nomination for her role in Dark Knight Rises. Can’t help but feel that if/when she wins, the Oscar will kind of be for both roles given how great she was as Catwoman.
Very solid crop of supporting actress nominees this year, except for Weaver, who I felt didn’t bring much to the table in her film. If I’d had a vote, I would’ve opted for Isabelle Huppert or Samantha Barks for that fifth spot. (Actually, I would’ve voted them both for nominations and voted for Hunt as a Best Actress nominee since that’s clearly a lead role.)
Jacki Weaver was my favourite thing in Silver Linings Playbook. I think she’s the only one who fully understood her character, and communicated that so calmly and so effectively. She knew what her role was and she knew how to ground the film, what kind of tone would help to allay the mayhem.
Obviously Anne will win. And obviously, if she doesn’t, Sally will win. I kinda hope she does a wee bit, even though I preferred Anne’s performance. I suppose if Anne does win, though, she’ll stop trying so hard…
I agree that Hathaway gave the best performance in this category. Helen Hunt is also worthy, but Hathaway’s performance is why the Supporting categories were created in the first place – she had such an impact with very little screen time. It’s almost not fair the Helen Hunt is in the same category because she had a whole movie to develop a character.
I think Hathaway’s performance worked because she gave an “inward” performance rather than an “outward” performance. The big mistake actors make in musical movies is that they emote like they are on stage, which makes their performance too big and broad for film. Despite Tom Hooper shooting her in close-up, Hathaway manages to tamper down the theatrically of her role and instead focused on the subtleties.
A word about Sally Field – a good performance, but she was woefully miscast. Mary Todd was 10 years younger than Lincoln and Sally Field looked she was Daniel Day-Lewis’s mother. Just a personal observation.
It’s as if the whole world has turned into high school bullies and we’re all acting like it’s okay. It’s most definitely not okay, not in any way. Either she gave the best performance of her career or she didn’t. It should only come down to that.
I have not seen or heard people mocking her in some incredibly merciless way I’ve never seen before for any other analogous musical performance. This is just what happens – and frankly, I don’t see her as a sad bullied girl. (I could find probably 50 actual sad bullied girls in any average high school.) I see her as a woman who’s making millions of dollars, is generally critically lauded and not mocked by almost anyone, and is on her way to winning an Oscar. No tears here.
So the critics had fun poking at her performance and the way Tom Hooper shot her performance – all in close-up. And it’s probably a big deal that he mom played the part, and Hathaway lost weight to play the part and even shorn her lovely locks so that now she must do awards season without them.
How in the world is this some kind of tragedy? She cut her hair off so that every magazine now says how good she looks with short hair in the service to a role. I’m really losing no sleep over her having to do awards season with short hair.

I’m sensitive to misogyny but I don’t think anyone has complained about Sally Field in some kind of agist, sexist way. I think most who didn’t like her performance didn’t like her performance. In what level of Fanboy Nation (it’s actually a nation, by the way) would any fanboy say they wanted Megan Fox as Mary Todd Lincoln? Didn’t the same woman just play Aunt May in Amazing Spider-Man – what did Fanboy nation say to that: that she was too young!
You haven’t made it in the Oscar race (especially if you’re a woman) until you and your performance have been parodied by a portion of the viewing public.
Hathaway was amazing in Les Mis and I truly adored the film too – I still secretly hope to hear its name when the Best Picture is announced – yep I know I’m dillusional. I want Anne to win …… HOWEVER, Sally is my all time favourite actress and I have loved everything she has done – I watched Cybil as a young teenager and that was me hooked. So in my heart I want Sally to win three from three ….oh to hear those Meryl fans curse LOL! But as I watched SLP I simply fell in love with Jacki Weaver – she was powerful in a quiet way and for me she was the best part of SLP.
So I am torn and would be happy with any of those three but if I had to say one I would truly want Sally for the win. And I haven’t seen Lincoln …. such is my loyalty to Sally!

I like her, I like her performance, but the whole film is just. so. annoying. Hooper did a great disservice to his cast: he got interesting performances but destroyed it all with his shot selection.

Yep — it’s Hathaway’s to lose. Although I think she’s quite talented and that she does a good job in Les Mis, I’d sooner see Field take the Oscar because it’s a more challenging, layered role. Hunt is surprisingly good, and Weaver could win if her part were more substantial. Adams is destined, I think, for an Oscar, but not this time around.
Anne Hathaway is overall a great spokesperson for a film. She can sell a movie rather well in interviews. I think people are put off by what could be mistaken for Rachel Berry-from-Glee like ambition. But she’s much smarter than that to me.
The performance is big and grandstanding, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worthy of a few accolades.
I do hope so.
Because Amy Adams is the one who deserves to win it.
