I love this exchange for so many reasons. The first, Jennifer Lawrence telling Jack Nicholson “you’re being very rude.” And the second, her funny reaction after he leaves. May she stay forever young. And here’s to hoping Nicholson doesn’t try to get him some of that.
Even Jack Nicholson avoids Anne Hathaway.
@penelope there is bigot in Hollywood, someone needs to warn the world about it ; )
I just wanted to say regarding the person calling themselves “mel” my friends and i have seen you on Celebitchy trashing Jennifer Lawrence while declaring your love for Kristen Stewart. You actually wrote I LOVE YOU KRISTEN! I know you’re a girl because no sane male would be jealous of a 22 year old female. This kind of jealousy girls excel at.
I know you’re a girl
mel might be short for melissa. most of of us know mel is a girl, sherlock.
because no sane male would be jealous of a 22 year old female.
you don’t know many gay men, do you?
I’m with Brian and Phantom here. PaulH you just lost a lot of credibility and just shows me exactly how you would feel about Jennifer Lawrence had she stuck to indie films.
Personally I was hoping Jessica Chastain would win, but by the time the Oscars rolled around, I knew she wouldn’t. So really I had no emotional stake in the Best Actress category.
This clip endears her enormously. She is in one moment star struck, in another giving attitude to JACK! Great stuff. A moment in time.
I’m sure her mix of spontaniety and naivete will give way really fast.
Fast Forward to 2014 Oscars – her affect will be very different.
Good for her.
OH MY GOD!!!!
PAULH YOU HAVEN’T EVEN SEEN SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK???
What the fuck, man!
That is outrageous.
It is one thing to beat down Riva and Chastain without seeing their films but to endlessly prop up an actress for a performance you HAVEN’T EVEN SEEN is clearly the most ludicrous thing about these boards. All year.
“…but 90% of her performance was her staring off into space.”
And here’s another one who didn’t see the film.
A bit off-topic but… after reviewing the ceremony, I noticed she was the only one on stage to congratulate Riva for her birthday. Some people criticized her for lacking any class/depth in her speech, but even this little detail I think completely redeems her.
This would be exactly my reaction but then again, I doubt Jack would ever compliment me in my lifetime.
I was rooting for Riva because she was so heartbreaking. But I’m actually fine with JLawrence winning. I didn’t really care for SLP and had only seen her in Hunger Games when my niece dragged me to see it. I liked her toughness in that film. Last week, I finally saw Winters Bone and thought she was really good, natural. Too soon maybe and for a movie like SLP. But she is a real actress. And I love that she’s from Kentucky. She keeps it real.
The only reason people were gaga for Riva winning is her age. Her performance was worthy of a nomination, but 90% of her performance was her staring off into space. Not exactly range-y and, more importantly, there wasn’t much to the character either. We barely got to know her before the disease hit.
Jack’s lost his touch!
The idea of Jack Nicholson putting his paws all over young Jennifer Lawrence is so gross and yet that is exactly what he’d like to do. Same with Jeff Wells I imagine (and the same level of gross-out that image inspires).
PaulH
Sorry about your job situation, but it isn’t really a relevant excuse for trashing and glorifying unseen performances, is it ? My problem isn’t that you didn’t watch Zero Dark Thirty, Amour and Silver Linings Playbook, my problem is that you didn’t watch them but still managed to deem two lead performances (Jessica Chastain, Emmanuelle Riva) undeserving and still claim relentlessly that the third (Jennifer Lawrence) is the only worthy one, simply because you liked her work in ANOTHER film.
Edward
Thank you, that’s an argument I can accept : you watched the film and formed an opinion.
Phantom, unlike PaulH I have watched all the nominees for best actress as well as best film and, personally, I felt Riva’s performance was far from incredible and, all in all, Amour was just another film about old people dying. However, I do consider Chastain’s performance as a strong one, although it had only a few scenes where she could really shine. Finally, Jennifer Lawrence was my favourite and that’s because she could really connect with the audience and make people believe she was really with a serious mental condition that many could relate to, without her the movie wouldn’t be the same.
Phantom, I intend to buy the SLP blu when it comes out. My time is otherwise occupied by looking for a job, which I’ve been laid off the past 2 and a half years.
Something people need to recognize. 22-year olds don’t get a standing O at the Academy Awards for being anything short of the top of their profession.
Yeah, the you are being rude comment was clearly tongue in cheek. It’s a hilarious clip though, especially when you see Jack hovering in the background before and after talking to Lawrence.
“You look like my ex-girlfriend.”
“Not a new girlfriend?”
“I thought about it.”
Lol.
I think she’s joking with her rude comment. She seemed more starstruck esiecyalky with him congratulating her.
PaulH
“Phantom, her name is on the marquee as the lead actress in SLP. I don’t think anybody besides you and a few diehards considers Lawrence in supporting.”
At least I saw the film/performance I’m talking about, after you trashed Chastain and Riva without watching Zero Dark Thirty and Amour, and dodged my question (did you watch at least SLP), I’m fairly certain that you didn’t even watch Silver Linings Playbook, and The Hunger Games was probably all you needed to champion Lawrence, and when she failed to gain traction for that role, you simply jumped on the SLP-bandwagon. For the record, I LOVED Lawrence in both, I would have had no problem with her getting a lead nod for THG or winning supporting for SLP…but I honestly don’t think that ‘Tiffany’ belonged to the lead race. The same role with the exact same screentime would have ended up in the supporting race, had a thirtysomething average looking relative unknown played the part (which would have been more faithful to the source material, in the book the character isn’t a 21 year old bombshell), she was campaigned in lead because she is a huge movie star now and she had Oscar magician Harvey Weinstein in her corner who simply knew how to pull off category fraud, because let’s face it, it’s not like it was his first time.
I feel kinda sorry for her. people already hate her. she’ll be over before she turns thirty. I was rooting for Riva but I like JLaw.
She’s still a kid, really.
I have to disagree with everyone that are angry over Lawrence winning. Thankfully, I had the opportunity to see all of the films that had a nominee for Best Actress with exception to The Impossible and really had a harder time figuring out why a 9 year old was nominated. As for Riva she was good, but it really seemed to be a movie that would relate more to older voters; or those that have parents in her age group. In addition to this, Riva has not been really involved with American cinema, which is why you cannot compare her to Jessica Tandy. Finally, when it comes down to Lawrence and Chastan Lawrence did deliver s much more complex movie character. Something someone her age typically would not be able to do; thus the reason why she was richly rewarded.
If there’s one good thing about a predictable awards season it’s that they’re quite difficult to take personally. I’m happy for Jennifer Lawrence despite my personal preferences in the category, and I hope she uses the legitimacy this Oscar affords her to take on more interesting roles.
And in Fox & Friends news, Donald Trump has further demonstrated his incontestable malignancy by criticizing Daniel Day-Lewis’s portrayal of Abraham Lincoln because he didn’t sound like politicians he knows “personally”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XDy2WVbrCQ
I walked out of Hunger Games and Winter’s Bone. I wasn’t impressed.
PaulH
I asked this question on multiple occasions without ever getting an answer, and I need an honest one : have you seen Silver Linings Playbook ? Or The Hunger Games (and its Box Office) was all the ‘proof’ you needed to champion Jennifer Lawrence in Best Actress ?
(And don’t take it as an insult, after you trashed performances in films you didn’t even watch (Zero Dark Thirty, Amour), this is a fair question.)
Phantom, her name is on the marquee as the lead actress in SLP. I don’t think anybody besides you and a few diehards considers Lawrence in supporting. It’s open and shut at this point.
Jack is sooooo creepy in this clip, especially when he comes back to the table and the way he looks at Jennifer. Creepy!
“Riva didn’t CAMPAIGN! You got to get out and campaign for it if you want it. Even Q Wallis understood how to campaign. Sorry she could travel but if she really really wanted it, get over here!”
Thank your for summing up perfectly EVERYTHING that is so tragically wrong with the awards system.
When a category is called ‘BEST Actress in a leading role’, voters should vote for the one THEY think is best, not for the one they were told to think is best by an agressive – and obviously effective – publicity machine. There IS a reason we call that category ‘Best Actress’ and not ‘Best Actress willing to campaign with the most succesful PR team behind her’.
And it’s remarkably unfair to say that Riva could have campaigned just like the others did. Actually she couldn’t. She is 86 and lives in Paris, and considering she didn’t attend the BAFTAs in London (less than 3 hours by train), it’s, as Christophe has already said, a miracle she managed to attend the Oscars.
@Phantom – what does it take for a Black or Latina actress to get in Harvey’s good graces?
Careful, Andor and Jason…it’s just people need to get past the results of last night because it is poisoning their opinions of others on here. Perhaps folks are resentfulmofmher success in the Hunger Games. I am clueless as to why people are hateful toward JL. Chalk it up to being a Great Mystery of Life.
Christophe
At this point, it would be fun, it would be frightening, what it couldn’t be is surprising…not anymore. Clearly he can convince the Academy about almost anything, whether it is to ignore masterpieces (Saving Private Ryan, The Social Network, Hugo) in favor of his crowdpleasers (Shakespeare in Love, The King’s Speech, The Artist) OR giving acting awards in the wrong categories (Waltz in supporting, Lawrence in lead ? REALLY ?).
sally, i get what you’re saying and i guess you’re right abt that, but emmanuelle riva is a bit older than q. wallis and she’s no longer in proper shape to campaign. she arrived at LAX on a wheelchair (technically on a plane, but then she entered the airport on a wheelchair), it’s already a miracle she mustered the strength to attend the ceremony!
I agree with Andor (and I hope others)! WTF, is with this hatred towards her? I don’t get it. Lighten up people. Sit back and think that she (like a few others) are the stars who are going to be the NEW Hollywood. She’s fun, fresh, raw, talented (YES, she is… Hello..Winters Bone anyone?), down to earth and likeable! Maybe she wasn’t the best (who the frak is, ever though), but she received the most votes (no matter how they went down)!
Let her enjoy her moment and stop bashing!
Thanks for the link, Andor! Lawrence’s candor is refreshing.
JLaw may be the newest “It Girl,” but she’s also more than that as we’ve seen from her performances. Although she wasn’t my first pick to win this year (I preferred Riva’s work), the Academy has often done worse in the past. I think people who are unhappy with her Oscar win are unhappy for these reasons: 1) Riva was better, 2) Tiffany wasn’t the best-written role, 2) Lawrence won “too soon,” and 3) She doesn’t seem to take her job seriously because she “doesn’t work hard enough” in preparing for her scenes. All I can say is, she still delivers when she’s on camera and it’s just as easy to accept her win as many others before her.
@Christophe: Riva didn’t CAMPAIGN! You got to get out and campaign for it if you want it. Even Q Wallis understood how to campaign. Sorry she could travel but if she really really wanted it, get over here!
phantom,
wouldn’t it be fun/frightening if harvey’s girls took up all the spots in the best lead actress category?
Cute regardless if she deserved it or not. Is there anyone cooler than Jack Nicholson?
Diego
Probably, he has just acquired Grace of Monaco and we all know that 1. Kidman will nail the iconic role even if the film sucks and 2. Harvey can secure a Best Actress Oscar even if the film sucks (The Iron Lady), not to mention he already has THREE (!) other previous winners on his 2013 slate : Meryl Streep & Julia Roberts (August : Osage County), Marion Cotillard (Lowlife), not to mention Amanda Seyfried (Lovelace)…and those are just the films/performances he ALREADY has, who knows how many more he will acquire, there are MANY still up for grabs : Diana (Naomi Watts), The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (Jessica Chastain), Serena (Jennifer Lawrence), Philomena (Judi Dench), Venus in Fur (Emmanuelle Seigner), Devil’s Knot (Reese Witherspoon), Effie (Dakota Fanning), You’re not you (Hilary Swank), Can a song save your life ? (Keira Knightley), The First (Lily Rabe), A Quiet Passion (Cynthia Nixon).
That just made everything worth it.
Best clip ever. 🙂
I don’t understand all the hatred Jennifer gets. She won an Oscar because she got the most votes. It doesn’t mean she was the best, it mean they liked her the most. I don’t see why we want to think that the Academy Award winners are always the best. It’s a competition. And that’s what I like about it. And about Jennifer… I think she is one of the brightest talent in Hollywood, I loved her amazing performance in Silver Linings Playbook. She made me fall in love with Tiffany (and I usually do not fall in love with girls :)). She has a lovely personality and I haven’t seen such a funny star in years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=1ACQpZW-eTg
She sure sounds fun to hang out with, too bad she can’t act! That they would choose likability over talent shows how little Academy members value their own industry. Emmanuelle Riva looks pissed when Dujardin announces the winner and she has every reason to be, Bday gurl wuz robbed!
Thought it was very good comment she bluntly made to Jack. He had it coming and great it came from her.
That was awesome
Two years in a row now that Harvey got a lead actress award for his movies.
Will there be a 3rd next year?
@SallyinChicago So you love bigots?
Jack really seemed to confuse her with someone else lol
Love her personality, just hope she makes a movie I can sit ALL THE WAY THROUGH. So far, out of two I’ve seen, I haven’t made it through, walked out.
