Every year, the nominees assemble for the class photo.  It’s maybe the best thing they do all day.

The Ang Lee-Steven Spielberg bromance continues

Sigh. That picture of Spielberg in the middle with everyone applauding him makes me so sad. And to think that he’s probably going to lose Best Director now. I also spotted Kathleen Kennedy in the shot and couldn’t help but feel awful for her as well.

Also, the guy standing next to Jessica Chastain has the best spot in the place, though for whatever reason he looks pretty unhappy.

    This is my favorite thing.

Do you guys think Bradley Cooper meant to stick his tongue out? lol And is there a lady with cat ears on or is that some weird bow?

If only Riva had been there… then Wallis could’ve sat on her lap.

  5. February 4, 2013

    Oh, I love this.
And ladies and gentlemen, this year, Affleck is the leading man. :)

  6. February 4, 2013

Where’ s Phoenix, Hoffman and Arkin? I can’t find them.
Wow, Cooper and Watts look so gorgeous.

WHY on earth could they not move those chairs away from the bottom center of the photo’s composition? why.

To Fabinho, Phoenix is in the photo standing near Sally Field, but did notice Riva, Hoffman and Daniel Day Lewis to be missing in action. As for my take on the photo. Very surprised on the standing arrangements for the class photo. Why do they have Lawrence all the way in the back row and what is up with De Niro’s less than impressed look on his face?

I always love this event! The Ang-Steven picture is fab!

Does it actually impact whether someone wins if they show or don’t show??? Not asking so much for Daniel Day-Lewis, who’s probably unbeatable, but what about Michael Haneke and Emmanuelle Riva? Since they haven’t been doing the publicity and appearances, does that make it less likely that Haneke takes screenplay or director, and Riva actress? Interested in what you think.

Very odd to see so many no-shows. Unless I’m wrong, no Riva, Haneke, Hoffman, DDL, Arkin, Clooney, or Tarantino.

  11. KT
    February 4, 2013

Yeah, I also caught Tarantino wasn’t there, nor Clooney and Heslov. I love the Spielberg picture too…the reactions are priceless from enthusiastic (mostly) to indifferent–great shot!

what is up with De Niro’s less than impressed look on his face?

I think he was born that way. :)

I don’t understand the chairs thing either.

Did they tell people what colors to wear? There seems to be a lot of purple(-ish).

Why are they hiding legends Speilberg and De Niro in the corner?

@KT–I don’t think it affects a win if a person doesn’t show. Sometimes people are sick or in the case of Riva, to fly from France at her age for a lunch could be difficult. She probably wants to save her energy for the Oscars.

They could have Photoshopped out those interlopers down front. As for the man next to Chastain, that’s Roman Coppola. He must be unhappy because Wes Anderson isn’t there as there’s a not-too-weird dress code. Tommy Lee Jones still has his Golden Globes scowl on. DeNiro has his “I don’t feel comfortable around non-Italians” face on. Is that Sally Struthers in the front row in orange? Is the dude with the long white hair a couple of rows behind her on the left a vampire hunter? Joaquin Phoenix’s doc may claim he is “still here,” but it doesn’t ever look like he actually is wherever he is at. Kathryn Bigelow looks like she’s ready to smoke another Boal. Alexandre Desplat looks… French. Bradley Cooper looks like he’s on Chaturbate. Quvenzhané looks totally chill. Denzel looks like he’s posing for a mugshot. Hugh Jackman needs to button his shirt. It’s not the 70s. David O. Russell looks very happy George Clooney and Lily Tomlin aren’t there. Hal Needham looks like he thinks he’s in line at the DMV for a non-driver photo ID. Ang Lee looks like he’s pleased with his unique tie color choice. Spielberg’s scarf makes him look like he forgot his Yakama. Okay, I’m out of snark. They all look wonderful. Well, except for Bradley Cooper.

Sasha and Awards Daily folks you need to see this: INCREDIBLE interview. Robert De Niro WOW–never seen him so visibly moved.

Sadly with all the absentees in the acting categories, we won’t get the classic picture of the five nominees with the Oscar. Such a pity. I would’ve loved to see the Best Actress lineup photo.

    Because Baby wasn’t even invited.

Is the dude with the long white hair a couple of rows behind her on the left a vampire hunter?

That’s Claudio Miranda he’s the DP of Life of Pi. The guy is really talented.

Also I remember reading somewhere (don’t know if it’s true) that people can choose where to stand.

    February 4, 2013

@Sasha: Whoops–I didn’t realize it was a sore point. There are so many interviews these days that many good ones often pass unnoticed. Just never seen such an emotional Robert De Niro…his interviews to put it frankly are usually painful to watch.

    Good for them. Nice shot.

If I were Jackman, I would consider myself lucky in this sense because, with his height, himself standing at the center, the golden statue tall and aside, the les mis actor’s sure got a hot spot if you ask me. Spielberg and Hunt’s places are not so bad actually; somehow you tend to spot them first next to the people around the statue itself in my opinion.

    Thanks for the ups, Sasha.

PS: I wouldn’t be surprised if Kennedy turned out to be Linney’s long lost sister xD. . . . JK (But they really look alike.) (

Jacki Weaver is ADORABLE!! I know she doesn’t have a chance of a win, but you just want to eat her up.

Interesting to see Ang Lee standing close to Anne Hathaway. So you think they talk about their collaboration in Brokeback Mountain and Heath Ledger?

What might some of them be thinking …

Robert De Niro: YOU takin’ a picture of me? You TAKIN’ a picture of me? No, wait. You takin’ a picture of ME? Yeah, that’s it.

Tommy Lee Jones: This goddamn wig glue. I still can’t stop keeping a straight face. Thanks, George.

Christoph Waltz: Oh, Mann. All diese lächerlichen Hollywood-Typen. Und dann diese dämliche Verleihung schon wieder. Inzwischen wissen doch wohl alle, dass ich der Beste bin.

Steven Spielberg: One more article trashing my film and I’m off. And then I will be reborn as Alan Smithee. Oh, Ang, I really hope it’s gonna work.

    Jennifer Lawrence: I will win.

Jessica Chastain: No, princess, you won’t.

Daniel Day-Lewis: Tee-hee! If the others only knew that I am Oscar.

    :-)

Having seen The Impossible, I think Watts’s performance is far superior to Chastain or Lawrence’s. The film itself is superb.

Its hard to fathom why some films have the awards buzz around them, whilst other, worthy films such as The Grey, The Impossible, Anna Karenina, Wallflower, have barely none. What is the missing ingredient- other than Harvey Wienstein?
