Tipped by Linda at Upandcomers.net, we’re wondering what’s up with the US distribution rights for Serena, with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. Pic is set to make its festival launch somewhere, maybe Cannes?
The plot synopsis comes from the book listing at Good Reads:
The year is 1929, and newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton travel from Boston to the North Carolina mountains where they plan to create a timber empire. Although George has already lived in the camp long enough to father an illegitimate child, Serena is new to the mountains–but she soon shows herself to be the equal of any man, overseeing crews, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving her husband’s life in the wilderness. Together this lord and lady of the woodlands ruthlessly kill or vanquish all who fall out of favor. Yet when Serena learns that she will never bear a child, she sets out to murder the son George fathered without her. Mother and child begin a struggle for their lives, and when Serena suspects George is protecting his illegitimate family, the Pembertons’ intense, passionate marriage starts to unravel as the story moves toward its shocking reckoning.
Rash’s masterful balance of violence and beauty yields a riveting novel that, at its core, tells of love both honored and betrayed
In my humble opinion she won the oscar for hunger games last year. I mean critics were raving about her performance in that movie. Too bad that movie didn’t come out in Oscar season.
She is the best of her generation. I think she will keep getting better. Remember she never took any acting classes. Just naturally talented. She does need to get cut up for mockingjay though. Toned up.
I thought Jennifer was sensational in “Winter Bone” – I was knocked out by her performance, but I honestly haven’t thought much of any film she’s been in since (I’ve seen them all). I thought “Silver L.” was really overrated and I wasn’t fond of her performance. I think she has incredible charisma and they’ve used that along with her all-american girl appeal to hit the cash register. I’m just being honest, and it’s hard for me because I think she has so much potential – she really hasn’t done that wide a range of types of parts – she’s great at pulling out the emotional stops, but I want to see her do more than just that. Unfortunately, getting the oscar this young and having the blockbuster hits may stop her from further development. I really hope not.
Resentment no she not to soon but really if watch other performances see why she clearly and very rightly wasn’t strong winter bone was even better and if this isn’t bad then its the same she miss out on winter bone like many other cause she wasn’t popular and got role in very big film which used a lot in her campaign sliver lings playbook was good but not THAT good if Serena and American hustle better than she clearly should’ve won for them that the meaning of to soon hope she also not ignored cause she not Meryl Streep:(
Her performance in sliver linings playbook was just not good outstanding another lie all you want but if this is bad or good you’ll all see, expects that her very VERY overexposure last year and hunger games got her Oscar her role also not intersing anything this role Serena is better and as other say she should win for winter bones SHE SHOULD WIN FOR THESE NOT DULL ROLE LIKE SLIVER LINGS PLAYBOOK is not her best. at lease Reese Witherspoon and Sandra bullock Oscar wins was theres (ouch)
It will be interesting. She just won an Oscar and I see her being a Halle Berry. Well, maybe she’ll get another one, but I think that if she does, it will be quite a while from now. No doubt that there’s some resentment due to this recent win at so young an age. I see that working against her, but we’ll see…..
I love your hate comments before seeing the movie.
The hate comments in the article description? Where? Or are you referring to comments?
I’ve seen a promo. She looks very good in it, raw and passionate.
Hay!
One question, were did you see the promo for serena? Can you send a link or something? have been looking for it, didnt know it was out really until you mentioned this.
WHERE DID YOU SEE THE PROMO?!
The promo debuted at Toronto last year for international buyers, which should explain my silly handle here. Industry? Come on.
Dude, I heard about this before SLP`, how could Jennifer win for that before this was even released?
Goddammit!
Anyway, Jennifer as Serena looks like the perfect match for DiCaprio’s Gatsby. hahahahah

Hey Ryan and Sasha, the new design of the site looks great! 😉
And thanks for bringing the like/dislike button on the comments back as I asked, it’s marvellous! 😀
I hope this performance is an affirmation of her “youthfully” awarded Oscar. I’m rooting for her. Somehow the synopsis makes me think this could really show off good acting chops from her–or do the complete opposite if the project isn’t handled right as a whole (i.e. it gets seedy or campy or both).
is there something that im missing…i am reading that the movie comes out september 27th of this year…sounds distribution like to me
If this is delivered as powerfully as it is suggested, me thinks that Ms. Lawrence was given the Oscar too soon. I would much prefer her to get the gold for that than Silver Linings.

Where have I heard this before? oh well, now we just need Emmanuelle Riva to make a movie where she plays a supporting character who hints at fucking other women and then Riva wins Best Actress this year for Silver Haired Playbook and everything works out perfectly. Good job, Academy. Out of step and behind the curve, as almost always.
In defense of Jennifer, and I still haven’t seen Amour (bad me), I’m okay with her getting the Oscar and here’s why. I believe she was given the award for her acting, not the role she played. I could care less if she fucked Robert DeNiro AND Jackie Weaver with Chris Tucker and John Ortiz making her an after-sex-sammich. If it makes sense to the character and she plays it honestly then I say bravo. But then again I didn’t read the book like you did. I know in the book Tiffany was older and probably less sex-fiendish however her role was a breath of fresh air. I hate how at times it sounds like I’m defending the academy when I’m not, I just thought she did a helluva job with the role.
One of the best comments I’ve seen at this site in a long time. Someone get Ryan and Oscar for Original comment.
I need to see an American version of its teaser because for some reason, UNexpectedly, I’m still not *really* feeling connected with the film’s synopsis despite JLaw in it who is for the time being doubtless one of my (mainstream) favorites.
That said, given the originally release date in US reportedly set to be in December(?) this year, thus an Oscar hopeful on their (producers’) part, I am quite curious to see what will become of her performance.
All the best to JLaw and the film – at least in terms of mainstream success.
PS: I am also interested to learn more about the other film of hers, directed by David O. Russell.

Thanks for the links, Sasha.
*correction*
… given the original release date in US reportedly set to be in December… — that’s what I meant to say… : ) [It’s all right if it still sounds a bit awkward….xD (Just didn’t feel like putting the word “originally”, let’ say, before (the word) “set”.]
“I need to see an American version”
Wait. Is there like an international teaser out already? I haven’t seen any footage. Nada. Please direct me 🙂
Not Jennifer Lawrence again. Is the overexposure from last year not enough?
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with her rising star. 5 years ago she was in Burning Plain and nobody saw it. Then it was Winter’s Bone and people say she should be in more. Then went with Like Crazy but also studio work like X-Men: 1st Class and then hit the jackpot this past year. She has paid her dues, or at the very least established her talent and range. She may have gotten some “overexposure” but that’s because people were paying too much attention to her. At least she’s not doing The Host or Twilight and seems to be picking some smarter projects.
I agree with Bryce. This movie, even if it was terrible (which we don’t know because no one’s seen it) would have no problem getting a distributor. Think about all the garbage that gets distributed that doesn’t have two huge box office stars with proven chemistry in it. I’m thinking that they are going to try and capitalize on the Silver Linings success by starting a bidding war at one of the festivals, possibly Cannes.
Even though I like Jennifer’s work in Winter’s Bone, I can’t see her doing this role justice. I’m guessing it’s gonna be a solid movie and solid performances. Definitely not an Oscar nomination for Lawrence in this coming year with Meryl, Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett and the big, strong actors bringing it. I just don’t see it coming.
Maybe it has no US distribution because it is not good?
It might not be good, but it won’t have trouble getting a distributor. It will feature the stars of guaranteed box-office hits THE HANGOVER PART III and THE HUNGER GAMES 2
There’s quite a bit of spoilage in that description. Hopefully You all didn’t read it.
After finishing the book (which is a great role for Lawrence) I’m not as taken by the baitiness of the role since (minorish spoiler) she isn’t physically present in the book’s climax. Of course this could change in the film, but I’ve not read the final scenes since I want a bit of a surprise when I see the film.

On a side note, I have to mention I really dislike the “reply” option in the comments. The last thing I want to do is skim over every comment to see if one of the replies is new since I’ve last read them. I understand that they are nice to keep sub-conversations organized, but it’s too clumsy to find them so I think the negatives far outweigh the positives.
Looks like another Oscar nomination for Jennifer.
Count on it, read the book. But nothing more than that unless Susanne Bier pulls one out of nowhere. I don’t trust her.
I will bet with confidence she’ll get a her nod for the Abscam-David O. Russell movie. That movie feels like a shoe-in for SAG Best Ensemble (though I am also judging on the awesomeness of the terrible hair the entire cast is sporting). For some reason it feels like the wonderful (purposeful) mess I like in my DOR films. Not sure who is lead and supporting though. Lawrence seemed like a late addition which made me think Amy Adams was the female lead.
“Lawrence seemed like a late addition which made me think Amy Adams was the female lead.” It’d seem that this is the case from the roles’ small descriptions.

Jen’s role in the ABSCAM project is small, not something that could grant her a nod.
