Ryan Gosling in the red band trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives.
Julian is a respected figure in Bangkok’s criminal underworld. He and his brother Billy run a Thai boxing club which is in fact a front for smuggling drugs to London. When Billy is murdered, their mother Jenna arrives from London to bring back the body. Jenna is herself the head of a powerful criminal organization and is used to getting exactly what she wants. She sets out to settle the score along a bloody path of rage, betrayal, and vengeance, hurtling toward an ultimate confrontation and the possibility of redemption.

Looks like Drive, Part 2. I’m not sure whether this is a good or bad thing……and Drive is a really terrific film.
Looks pretentious to me too, but we will see.
Has a movie, every movie, just to be considered as a possible Oscar or Golden Globe (or any other award) nominated or winner? Why? Most of the times, the best movies aren’t even considered for the awards.
he will win actor at cannes. good chance he will.
flying Air France to Africa twice last year…I must have watched Drive 7 or eight times.
Am i the only one who is kind of annoyed by the fact that it will be released by Weinsteins VOD-company… I have nothing against VOD, but would just hate it if it means that i will not even get the chance to see one of my most anticipated movies on the big screen….
No way this is only released straight to video.
The Academy seems to have misplaced Kristin Scott Thomas’ Oscar. And she wants it back.
Looks a little pretentious to me. We’ll see.
Kristin Scott Thomas looks almost unrecognizable. I am looking forward to seeing her performance.
Gosling is stepping out of the safe box and doing “award-worthy” work in indies. No problem from me.
uhh?
Blue Valentine, Place Beyond the Pines, Half Nelson, Lars and the Real Girl…all award-worthy work.
dope
Beg your pardon? When I say “awards-worthy,” I mean nominations of course. Though I do think he should’ve won an Oscar for Blue Valentine.
I’m in.
I loved “Drive”. It looks like this second attempt will be worthwhile as well. It is on my “must see” list, that’s for sure.
I noted the director used the same film editor and composer from “Drive”. I like it when directors are loyal to (and rehire!) the people who help create his/her visions.
Having said that, I wonder why the director didn’t use the same ccinematographer (Newton Thomas Sigel) from “Drive”?
That felt a little indulgent and actually not too gruesome for a red band trailer. The trailer is very Refn, which by now I feel more people know his game after Bronson and Drive that they do not have to hide this like in Drive’s notorious vroom-vroom advertising.
Less said by Gosling the better. I just am interested in seeing how believable he is in a really physical performance.
And Kristen Scott Thomas is out to lunch in this role it seems. She may be what gets me immediately into the theater to watch this.
Kristin Scott Thomas’ role looks pretty juicy. It’s sad to see how Hollywood has disowned her and that she’s had to go to France to get good roles. I think this could net her an Oscar nomination.
KST is the type of actor who won’t be kept in a box or repeat the same role, so I think the move back was probably hers. As a result, she consistently turns out great performances in roles that simply don’t exist in Hollywood. She’s in it for the long run, thank god.
totally OT: Jeremy Iron’s has a major meltdown. Now he either apologizes and does some sort of “service” or GLAAD will handle his asshole.

Dont see how that is a meltdown. Sounds more just like he’s got some misinformed ideas. He isnt being judgemental, he’s just pondering something stupid.
He isnt being judgemental, he’s just pondering something stupid.
He’s doing more than pondering. He says repeatedly that he’s Worried. People ‘worry’ about things they fear.
Nah I stand by meltdown. Either that or he’s full-on method and in character as Pope Alexander VI. Similar to but less hilarious than David Brooks’ meltdown a couple of days ago in The New York Times.
Kind of hypocritical from someone who is pretty famous for having an open marriage with his wife. Great actor but should just shut up.
Refn+Gosling+Scott Thomas (and those visuals) – love it.
Probably not Oscar-friendly, but screw the Oscars when you have this combination.
maybe this could go on the list of un oscar films/alt oscars films or whatever was the proposed name for it. sasha/ryan joked they’d do this during the season to give play to some films that didn’t fit the oscar scheme of things or less likely to get an oscar push.
seriously, that project needs traction.
it would look pretty nice on the side bar. 🙂
As expected and from this trailer I can say that this is not awards material, at least not Academy Awards
