Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

It is just crazy that in such a short time the type of films Adams has been in when you look at the fact that her film career really only started to take off in 2005 when she did Junebug. In eight years she has recieved 4 nominations and has been in films like Junebug, charlie Wilson’s War, Doubt, The Fighter, Enchanted, The Master, The muppets, etc. Not to mention with Her & American hustle out this year and Big Eyes next year plus she also has the Janis Joplin bio also. I think eventually she will recieve her overdue Oscar. Hopefully she won’t follow the same Oscar fate as Thelma Ritter and Deborah Kerr.
The main takeaway for me is that Jonze is interested in probing into the disturbing possibility of falling in love with a device who appears to love you back. Now, I know Jonze can’t reach the confusing depths of Kaufman, but will he keep the story strange? Will he take advantage of this new kind of story (it’s not Lars’s real girl–it’s a piece of media) to make something puzzling and profound out of it? What is a body worth? How much of a relationship is your own projection? What are words, what do they amount to?
I happen to think Jonze is a genius, including Where the Wild Things Are, so my hopes are high.
These glimpses of Phoenix’s work are even more stunning in a post-“Master” context. From the coiled, animal rage of Freddie Quell to something more low-key and tender here. So much about this trailer excites me, but that was the main takeaway.
Phoenix looks so relaxed and natural here.
This really shows how you can take a seemingly dumb premise – or rather, one that could have been mishandled by inferior hands – and with the right cast and crew, make something genuine and amazing out of it.
While I feel in the end AMPAS will not go for this, it looks freaking great! Go Joaquin Phoenix (who should have won an oscar last year)!!
So curious who will score the music for this film. Couldn’t find it. Here’s hoping Carter Burwell or where is the amazing Philip Glass
It’s actually Arcade Fire.
Fucking Arcade Fire! Yay! How great is that!? I’m officially excited:)
This looks like a Materpiece to me. Definitely looks Best Picture worthy.
This has the feel of Lars and the Real Girl with Ryan Gosling. Can’t wait to see it.
Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams are in good hands I believe. Good for them.
Re Spike Jonze, besides some of his directed music videos, seen both Being John Malkovich (B+ [solid]) and Adaptation (as B+ [solid]), and heard good things about Where the Wild Things Are, so it’s good to see him back seemingly, it is to be hoped, as robust as he could be.
And this seems another great year for Amy Adams. All the best!
Thanks for the caps and embedding, Sasha.

(By the way: thank you (again), Awards Daily (Sasha and Ryan); the package has arrived at my door but intact. About the book itself, a bit disappointed to have learnt that the man’s thought American Beauty “overrated”; American Beauty is one of the greatest films in 1990s, to begin with. But I agree with him, In the Mood for Love, for instance, is “overrated” in general though I have yet to read his own words to see if we also agree in detail….)
“And this seems another great year for Amy Adams. All the best!”
Self-correction: To fix something seemingly awkward […]:
(I’ll settle for this.) And this seems like another great year for Amy Adams. All the best!
(I was thinking about one thing while somehow writing the other — I guess I was trying to emulate the French syntax and ended up trapping myself. Here’s your sign)
Not to sound like too much of a dude, but my God does this movie have three really hot actresses in it who also happen to be really, really great ACTORS. Cannot wait.
Just when ya think the race is all figured it, it throws you a curveball. I am definitely adding Phoenix to my predicts. Film looks like a showcase piece for him.
I would love it if Amy Adams received a lead nod for American Hustle and a supporting nod for Her…but I don’t want her to win for either. She is such a great actress I want to see her win for a memorable lead role…long story short, I want her to win next season for Tim Burton’s Big Eyes. That way, she would be a seven time nominee and Best Actress winner at 40…now THAT would be damn impressive…like streepwinsletblanchett impressive.
Having said that, if her ‘Her’ performance is the kind Streep’s was in Jonze’s Adaptation, I’m all for a supporting win this year.
I’m sure she’ll be great in ‘American Hustle’ and I truly hope I will love the film, but based on the trailer I can’t help but think that her part will be just another ‘Tiffany’ from Russell : over the top flashycrazyscreaming scenes clearly designed for Oscar-attention; a lot of ass/tit shots and a shady campaign probably putting her in lead when her character might not be more than strong supporting. Having said that, I would love to be proven wrong here.
what a great agent amy adams has. between lullaby, her, and american hustle..shes almost guranteed to be at the oscars -again- this year.
I’ve decided to grow my own 1970s porn mustache after seeing this trailer. So yea…Phoenix looks great. Always nice to see Jonze making movies even for the ones I don’t love(Where The Wild Things Are, wanted to). Gotta get him reunited with Kaufman. Mara seems radiant on camera consistently.
Jonze only seems to put the effort into projects that truly interest him, regardless of the format. Jonze’s diversity as an artist and the fact that he’s working with Phoenix makes this an absolute must for me.
Yes please.
Oscars for Joaquin Phoenix or Spike Jonze would make my year.
Well Her was on my most anticipated list @ No.4 at the beginning of the year. Just the premise of the film itself was so intriguing. And this Trailer justifies my huge anticipation. The concept was always brilliant on paper, and now with this trailer, we know that the filimg of it is too. For the rest of the year, it will remain my most anticipated. Any film that merges romance and sci-fi in an effortless, efferscent way is a huge turn on for me. Case in point Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Upstream Color, both are among my all time favorites. Hope this one turns out to be as promising as the trailer looks.
Woah, when I read the synopsis way back when, I thought there might be a chance that Phoenix was miscast. EVERYTHING looks good…like Alexander Payne good, which will equate to only nominations, but no wins.
Side note: Scarlett J’s voice is possibly one of the most annoying in all of Hollywood, but here, she sounds complex yet authentic for a machine.
like Alexander Payne good
Ew, God forbid. Have you ever seen any Spike Jonze films? Let’s remain optimists here.
I’ve seen Spike Jonze films without Charlie Kaufman writing them. It has endeared me to be cautious about every non-Kaufman written movie he’s gonna make from now on.
Um, he’s directed 3 features prior to this, two written by Kaufman. So it must be Where the Wild Things Are that you had a problem with? Can’t be the music videos, shorts or skateboard films that cause concern.
Charlie Kaufman? Genius, prodigious writer
Spike Jonze? Great Director and as such doesn’t depend on any writer to make great films.
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE? Great movie, perfect movie
SYNECHDOCHE, NEW YORK? Could have used Jonze’s direction
You must’ve saw a much different Where the Wild Things Are then me. One without an annoyingly twee soundtrack and maudlin insipid tone that drained all the energy from the charming, masterful children’s book.
Any director needs a good screenplay to make a good film, you can’t make a great film with a badly written script, although it is possible to make a bad film from a good one.
This looks good! Patience pays off, hopefully. Spike Jonze is a man worth waiting for, it seems. Phoenix looks really good in this. Completely different, somehow, but that should only enhance his Oscar prospects (for those of us who care to see him nominated).
Anyone got a kleenex?
I thought the same thing
Crowded to say the least. The number of Best Actor candidates this year is beyond anything we’ve seen in a long time. Same goes for Best Actress and Best Picture. There’s going to be a lot of glum faces once the season is done.
Oooh really good, really really good. Best Actor nomination sounds about right to me! Let’s hope for at least numerous Screenplay nominations for the great Spike Jonze too –if not more.
Even though the trailer isn’t really showing it, I’ve heard buzz that Amy Adams is doing career-best work in this, but who knows where that comes from (the studio probably). Regardless, they love her in that category so a nomination could very well pan out for her in what’s looking to be a less-crowded year for that category.
And I got her down for a Best Actress in a Leading Role nomination for AMERICAN HUSTLE too! She has more chances at a double nomination than Tom Hanks in my opinion.
I think it could happen, and I’d bet that she’d win one of them. That would be SIX nominations for her. Holy crap.
So sick of this early buzz thing- 90% of it is usually BS.
