Nelisse is nice but could this shake the Best Picture race?
I absolutely loved and devoured this book when I read it a few years ago. But, while the plot details look similar, this trailer does absolutely nothing for me. The music is terrible, the narration is terrible, the lighting, the acting… I hope it’s just trailer-itis because this could be a phenomenal movie, or it could be a steaming heap.
Love Watson (it was hers the Oscar that Frances McDormand took home) and love Rush. But the narration is so cheesy!
Take this! Motherfuckers! #TheMonumentsMen #YOLO
Wow.Looks.Terrible
20 minutes into Before Sunrise and I’m supremely bored! I knew I would be but AD readers kept raving about this franchise, so I thought I’d give it a chance. Are they just going to talk aimlessly like this for 2 hrs? Because I absolutely HATE chit-chat in real life and in movies. So if there’s no car chase, explosion, meteor or coup d’état in this movie, I’d rather know it now and not have to go through this cinematic torture!
MY CONVERSATION WITH ANDRE. Written by the two leads, directed by Louis Malle. If you’re a hipster you might have an orgasm watching it (beats anything Whitt Stillman might have ever attempted). It’s awesome and on Hulu+. Get to it.
Dinner
Yes!…My bad 🙂
No time to watch this now, but at least the two guys sound like they’re actually knowledgeable about a given subject and have mapped out carefully what they’re going to say. They didn’t just paste together enough pseudo-philosophical ramblings and pretentious clichés to last an hour and a half. I swear if we made a conversationnal movie based on AD comments, it could be a 100 times better than the whole “Before…” series.
If you’re patient at all, give BEFORE a chance. If anything it only gets better as it goes along. But if the characters rubbed you the wrong way then it can’t be saved; happens to me all the time. And do see MY DINNER* WITH ANDRE eventually.
Oh wait, you did imply having seen the whole series in your response so never mind.
No – only 50 min into Sunrise now – might finish it later. I’ve watched extracts from Sunset and Midnight and it didn’t look any more appealing. I dunno if they rubbed me the wrong way, but yeah in a way they might be too likeable and too mundane. I don’t mind conversational movies after all, but the conversation has to hold my interest, that’s all.
A good part of this trailer feels like Lasse Hallstrom’s work to me and I mean it as compliments.

Ms. Emily Watson, Ladies and Gentlemen! [Standing ovation]
And I still need to see Ms. Watson and Mr. Rush fail to deliver. [They always deliver]
Oh my – and John Williams is doing the music! That’s my Christmas present for the year!
“From the studio that brought you Life of Pi” …?
Hold on a minute. That’s the same studio that brought us “All About Steve.” That’s the same goddamn studio that gave us “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.”
LMAO!
“From the studio that brought you Life of Pi” Jeeeeez
I’ve not read the book, but I know many who have and they all say it’s a stunning achievement and for that reason and the presence of Geoffrey Rsh and Emily Watson, I think this film could surprise many. The fact that it was originally scheduled for Winter 2014 and then bumped up to fall 2013 makes me think that the studio (Fox) thinks it might be an awards contender.
Yeah, it looks cheesy and heavyhanded, but it’s just a trailer, and, well, Extremely Loud, The Blind Side and Les Miz all got nominations for BP (plus some others) recently without a ton of critical success. The subject matter is always catnip to many voters as well.
DO I think it’s a BP nominee, not likely with the tough competition, but if there’s one sleeper on the fall slate that will emerge as a contender this year, my money’s on this.
Remember when Hitchcock was bumped up to late last year and everybody thought it must be because Fox Searchlight knew they had a masterpiece on their hands?
They still do narration in trailers? Also, ACCENTS. Yeah, no.
