I totally agree with you SeattleMoviegoer. I don’t understand all of the David O. Russell love.
89% more entertaining than the majority of the trailers seen this year. Love the cheetah motif…
looking forward to this SO MUCH MORE than that David O. Russell effort coming out this fall.
Love […] Ridley Scott’s films.
At least this looks to be a solid fun if not for editing, supporting actress(es) noms [Guesswork]. So, I’m in.
I’m here for Cameron Diaz; she looks completely mesmerizing in this. The others, not so much.
On a second viewing: It looks more like a genre piece than a big Oscar contender, which is probably for the better. Other than that I get a Oliver Stone-vibe from it, which is probably for the worse.
Yea, but thankfully it looks a little bit more subdued than your average Oliver Stone film as of late. I didn’t entirely get Savages flashes, but now I just reminded myself of that film. Yuck.
Very slick trailer while avoiding being bombastic or too informative. I like what I see. Is there a chance this will just be a run of the mill thriller with top notch actors? Yea although I certainly don’t mind thriller that sticks to it’s genre roots. The best example of something like that is Michael Clayton, a smart throwback to films of the 1970s that is thoroughly entertaining. I actually think that flick is kind of underrated despite the accolades. I mean I get it. It’s no The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, but as a genre piece it’s pretty entertaining and emotionally engaging. In any case, this looks good. Don’t prove me wrong Ridley.
I LOVE Michael Clayton!!! Should have won Screenplay.
With Ridley Scott, the worst case scenario is that you’ll have fun watching it, so with this material and cast, I don’t think it can miss.
While I’d never predict Oscar noms for a political/crime thriller, the genre itself has very long legs and shelf-life – look at the Hammett films from the 40s or the thrillers from the 70s (maybe it’s a 30 year cycle?).
If it entertains first, longterm appreciation will follow. Oscar optional, but not expected.
Diaz looks fucking awesome in this!
Good lord, Hollywood let Diaz’s career die already. She looks like cracked leather from your mom’s decade-old purse.
That’s what’s interesting about this part, though. That someone like Diaz even got the offer to play this and seems to have fun doing it.
Sometimes cracked leather is preferable to the shiny, polished one everyone is dying to get their dirty hands on.
Wait… you:re saying this about Cameron Diaz’s wrinkly face when the movie also stars a fellow old weathered leather fella named Michael Fassbender??
Javier Bardem is a man verging on self-caricature these days (Brad Pitt ditto)….this trailer gives the impression that JB is ready to embrace it (the self-caricature) with full-blooded determination…could be fun, could be disastrous…
Intrigued about Fassbender and especially Diaz in this, though
Only caricature I’ve seen lately was SKYFALL, and I blame Sam Mendes for finally making a terrible movie. There was hardly any help from Logan either. He was terrific in BIUTIFUL.
Absolutely, he was brilliant in Biutiful! Utterly brilliant.
I was pointing to his villain-repertoire (in English-language productions) rather than all he’s been doing. He is an incredible raw talent, he’s just in a position now where he needs to take care of his image as a serious actor and play roles that add to his mystique and his range rather than merely exploit his already established talent for being over-the-top creepy.
AwardsDaily…the only place where you’ll find people calling Skyfall and Bardem’s performance ‘terrible.’ Are you joking?
While I think Skyfal was very far from terrible, I still don’t get all the acclaim it got. 80+ on Metacritic? Come on!
I blame Sam Mendes for finally making a terrible movie.
Mendes already did that with Jarhead.
Sold. I think this is one to watch out for to nab some noms. Might not be a true contender to take the big prize but I think it could get a BP nod and could Diaz get a nom? Looks like a good femme fatale juicy role.
This will probably be a solid and entertaining thriller, but I don’t think it’s getting anywhere the Oscars.
Guess we’ll see won’t we. 😉
Totally disagree. That is what the trailer is aiming us to buy it for. The movie will probably be as violent and grizzly as NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN if not more, but it will have little to no action, unfortunately the trailer is trying to overplay and oversell something that is not really there to begin with. It’ won’t be much of a thriller either. More of a moral contemplation?
I sure hope AMPAS makes good use of all 10 possible slots. If all these movies end up delivering -hell if 60% do- I will be mad if we end up with 7 nominees and one of them being SAVING MR. BANKS.
Because it’s guaranteed that “Saving Mr. Banks” will be a terrible movie completely unworthy of Oscars, right?
Guaranteed? No. But I also don’t think it’s going to be this huge critical hit a lot of people do. Looks super cheesy to me. Hope I’m wrong.
Bryce, do you work for Disney or attended an advance screening of the film? Otherwise you are just acting like many film critics, that write their reviews before watching the film.
Bryce, have you not seen all the praise that’s come from people who have read the screenplay? And there is at leas one person on AD who has seen the film and say Thompson is great.
Don’t be so prejudiced. Light doesn’t mean dumb. Funny, doesn’t mean stupid. Just look at The Philadelphia Story.
Agreed Kate. Looks good but I am tempering award expectations beyond screenplay.
