Amat Escalante‘s ultraviolent crime-thriller romance involving a cop, a kid and a cartel won the director prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Now Mexico has submitted the controversial love story as its candidate for Oscar’s Best Foreign Language film.
“The film is a fiction. It’s about characters, a family that is destroyed by the violence and attempts to rebuild. Mexico’s drg wars is just the context,” Escalante told Variety Wednesday after “Heli” was named Mexico’s Academy Award submission.

Not sure if The Past would be eligible for France’s domestic selection for this year’s Oscar yet simply outdone by last year’s release Renoir for that matter, or if The Past in fact has been slated to undergo next year’s process in France. However, I am interested in seeing both Renoir, and another French film Young and Beautiful.
Anyway, the Mexican contestant, correct me if I’m wrong, almost broke the 180-[…] rule (not that it’s neces…, er, I mean, important…) in the first trailer. But then again, it was just a trailer….
French Problems, they have 3 excelent films so they had to leave 2 of them out, Mexican Problems, all of the year`s films sucked so we had to choose the least awful.
and the Polish submission is Wajda’s ‘Wałęsa. Man of Hope’
Off Topic:

Also ‘Borgman’, by Alex van Warmerdam, is the Dutch submission for best foreign film
