Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

Lisa-yes and, you could argue, yes. Joanna Gleason’s Tony-winning performance as The Baker’s Wife in the original production is the iconic take on the role, so I’m curious to see what Emily Blunt does with it. Amy Adams played it recently at The Public, which received so-so reviews.
This arguably being Sondheim’s most accessible show, I’m cautiously optimistic toward the whole proceeding. The more I look at Meryl, the more I like the witch look, though I expected a more ghastly appearance, it’s what makes her transformation more exciting. If you haven’t yet, the original production was filmed and is on Netflix, highly recommend
Depp will be fine. His SWEENEY was brilliant (the best movie musical in the past 20 years–a triumph for Burton)…and it didn’t require a Howard Keel voice. I just wish this had been the cast for SWEENEY with Depp and Streep as Mrs. Lovitt.

meryl looks scary , me likey is there no role she can’t disappear into
Isn’t Emily Blunt In this and isn’t she like a main character moreso than Kendricks?
In my opinion I think Streep and Baranski have a good voice! I can´t “judge” over Johnny Depp´s voice, because I never heard him sing.
The Baranski role is extremely small.
Never heard of this Musical, but I´m looking forward to see it.
This helps me remember what I love about the 2013 Oscar race over the 2012 and 2014 one…no high-profile musical.
The photo is amazing. Leave it to Streep.
Amazing. I am constantly impressed that Streep can invent new characters and harness her powers for good. She has been doing this for a long time but she only gets more interesting. It’s unusual for anyone to maintain a long film career, but she is entering new territory. I heard that TWC’s The Giver may be the first film to utilized technology that allows complete film user immersion.
For a second I thought it was Streep as Violet in “Osage County”!
I would be 100 times more excited for this if Depp wasn’t in it. I think he has to be, IMO, the most irritating, flat actor out there. I’ve never understood the love for him, he throws on a quirky accent and some makeup and calls it acting. His singing in Sweeney Todd was mediocre and I worry he’s gonna bog this movie down. While queen Meryl has the acting chops to back up her singing, which can be so-so, Depp is so bland, and his singing is so bland, that I really think he was a bad choice here.
Excited for Anna Kendrick though, she’s great and I love seeing her get bigger roles!
Then you will be excited to see The Last Five Years, that will be a big showcase for her.
I’m still waiting for your version of Assassins, rufus.
Give me 20 million dollars and I’ll do it!

she can sing way better than most people in the music industry
I wouldn’t go by the music industry to judge musical talent. 🙂
That song was half way decent but as many people here know, I’m picky about these things.
Work it bitc…. eh…. witch! 😀
She has a great singing voice.
If you don’t like Mamma Mia!, then okay. (it made over 600 million $-so SOME people must have liked it)
But watch Ironweed, Postcards from the Edge or A Prairie Home Companion and then tell me again the woman can’t sing.
She looks great here. Love Streep but I have some doubt about her singing here. She wasn’t really good with the singing in mama Mia.
Well, Meryl never wanted to play a witch when she got all those scripts in the 90s. Let’s hope the wait paid off—she looks fascinating here. I already want to learn more about her character.
I’m not going to reveal any spoilers, but a performance with the Original Broadway Cast is readily available (it’s on Netflix Streaming, for example).
I will say that this is one of those rare musicals that’s pretty readily available for a cinematic version, while there are theatrical elements to the show, it’s not really dependent on any of them. The show moves along at a quick pace, most of the songs clock in at less than 3 minutes and the majority of the show is filled with really short scenes that push the action forward.
Plus, the setting of the show is mostly in forested areas which will allow for a lot of variety and some beautiful cinematography so the movie won’t suffer from being too static as many stage to film transitions also are.
I have high hopes for this.
So I guess Meryl Streep will have two wigs in contention this year… And once she’s done filming Into the Woods she could keep the wig and star in the American remake of Blue is The Warmest Color.
I portrayed the Wolf. Johnny Depp has some huge shoes to fill…
🙂
Was in a production of this musical. I cannot WAIT for this movie. Ugh.
I fear the singing in this film but that’s a groovy pic. Anna Kendrick can sing but Streep and Depp are iffy, imo. No idea about Pine. And I liked NINE better than CHICAGO. So I’m not going to bother looking forward to it or try to ignore it.
Hey, when Meryl the Great sings, children will listen!
🙂
Depp only has one song, and it’s not one that’s usually sung in a traditional manner. I think Depp is very good casting for this role.
Streep showed a good ability to sing at the end of Postcards. Her songs are more about attitude and emotion and I think she will be quite good.
The roles you do need to worry about are Cinderella, and the Baker and his Wife, and the two Princes, those are the tougher and more challenging songs of the show/movie.
I’m not familiar with their abilities, are you?
As I was checking who plays those parts on the IMDb something possessed me to search Sara Ramirez. When is she going to get a musical? She’s one of those actors that my brain keeps on file as being extremely talented and wasted on dumb TV shows/movies.
I don’t know, but with Rob Marshall at the helm, I would like to think they have the ability to sing. And these parts are hard to sing.
Marshall should be fine – if they pop him a couple of quaaludes when he starts editing.
Yeah, that’s my big concern. Into the Woods has minimal choreography, so it won’t give him as much opportunity to overedit so I’m mildly optimistic.
Meryl has sung in several of her films, and she is pretty darn good!
I really like this, Streep looks amazing, now I’m excited for this.
I love her so much.
She never stops surprising and impressing me….
