Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

Wow Misty Upham is in this movie. I hope she makes more movies. It’s great to see Margo Martindale and Julia Roberts are in the same movie again. The last time they were in the movie together was Erin Brockovich. I hope they both get nominated for an Oscar.
Hmm, so much for the ‘Meryl will be in the Supporting Category.’ Seems like TWC has decided to switch gears and go all Meryl. (Listed 1st in the credits…not ‘also starring’ at the very end. Since this trailer seems to focus predominately on Meryl (and not on Julia Roberts), they’ll probably try to claim that JR is ‘supporting’ just like their ploy of placing SLJackson/Pulp Fiction as ‘supporting.’
I appreciate that Julia Roberts hasn’t done anything stupid to her face. You never know what they’re gonna look like when you haven’t seen them for a while.
Thank you, Mrs.
Meryl reminds me of Jessie Royce Landis in To Catch A Thief, in this trailer.
Wow! I’m sure everyone has seen this already, so I’m surprised it hasn’t been mentioned. Roger Colriss actually called out Meryl on her performance, saying she’s acting rather than being. Strange, since I thought that was more visible in The Iron Lady, which he called the best performance of 2011. Pure politics. That year, I think it was clear Meryl could really win the Oscar, and many critics wanted to see her finally win her third award. When a huge critic comes out with comments like these, it opens the door to other critics, who then aren’t as afraid to be critical.

OT: I thought the KICK-ASS 2 review over at rogerebert.com was going to be the most blatantly offensive and ignorant piece of crap I read all year, but now here’s a silly contender for DALLAS BUYERS CLUB

In somewhat related news: Darren Aronofsky was blown away by Jared Leto’s performance
Kennedy Center Honors are in: Martina Arroyo, Herbie Hancock, Billy Joel, Shirley MacLaine and Carlos Santana.

As amazing as Streep is in everything, I can’t see her winning again, that just seems like madness to me. But then again, Bullock winning her 2nd Oscar also seemed crazy a few years ago. I still feel like it’s Blanchette’s to lose, although I’m seeing Gravity this weekend so maybe Bullock will prove to be worthy of another!
I still have hope that Delpy will slip in with a nod at least, alongside Streep, Blanchette, and Bullock. The last slot is way too hard to call, too many unseen performances and too many that may end up in supporting.
I’m willing to bet that even if the final critical consensus will be as mixed as the early word, this film will still receive 5-6 nominations :
Best Picture (Clooney + Weinstein = you know they can make this happen)
Best Actress (Meryl Streep…no explanation needed)
Best Supporting Actress (they love movie stars like Roberts here)
Best Supporting Actress (they love underappreciated vets like Martindale here)
Best Supporting Actor (likable Cooper received raves)
and maybe even Best Adapted Screenplay (Letts is stage royalty)
Bottom line : The Academy has no trouble showering films with acting nominations even when they are clearly not that fond of the film in question (The Master, The Help, Doubt), so lukewarm reviews probably won’t prevent at least 2, maybe even 4 of those happening.
After that, the BP nod would be cake simply because of the obvious support of the dominant Actors Branch, the sheer star power (as if they could resist the Streep/Roberts duo), not to mention the inevitably effective and questionably aggressive campaign tactics of the Clooney/Harvey duo (a.k.a. the ones who championed Argo and The King’s Speech to BP victories)… and if all those nods happen, it really won’t be a reach anymore to expect them to nominate highly acclaimed Tracy Letts’s screenplay, based on his own iconic play.
How was the Academy not fond of The Help? That movie got a Best Picture nomination!
Possibly because it missed out on director, writing, editing, costumes, score and song. I feel that if the film was loved so much (and not just by actors) it would have gotten, at least 3 of those 6 additional to just Picture and Acting.
I totally agree the Academy’s lack of love for the Help. Just like that movie, August: Osage County will garner a lot of support from the acting branch- nobody’s going to be able to resist the Meryl-Julia Olympics- to push them to a Best Picture nomination and quite a few acting nominations (Streep, Roberts, Martindale).
This is Les Mis all over again, but starring Meryl Streep. Actress+Screenplay+ maybe picture. That’s it.
What can you say? The talent on display by the actors in August: Osage County.. wow.. it is in nearly the same league as Oscar-winner Kate Winslet (The Reader, The Holiday), but in the end I do not think this will take home that many statues. I must say it’s refreshing to read about a film’s Oscar narrative about it being OVERCROWDED with strong female lead roles. Let’s have some more Pacific Rim scale performance showdowns within one movie!
Okay I have seen you post numberous times that Kate Winslet will win Best Actress. Can you please explain why you belive that to be so?
Once again as Ryan put it, you need to learn to speak Watermelonese lol
Still think the film can get in a lineup o 7-9 but it seems like it will be in the lower tier just based on early critical consensus. It just seems like a performances driven film like The Help & Doubt.
This movie has a lot of heat. Looks infinitely better than first trailer.
If Streep wins again it will be even more frustrating and seem like even more of a missed opportunity that Viola Davis didn’t win two years ago.
Yeah, Streep so not going supporting.
Is it just me or the cinematography doesn’t look as atrocious as in the first trailer? Sounds like nonsense I know.
Boy that’s not my idea of Little Charles, like at all.
Here’s hoping next year is a better one for a talent like Benedict Cumberbatch
THE FIFTH STATE -looks terrible
STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS -pretty enjoyable, but inferior to the 1s one
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY -miscast?
I thought Cumberbatch was great until it was revealed who he actually was – then I felt like he was terribly miscast….I mean, didn’t anyone bring up the fact that he looked a little too much like Chris Cooper????
Should’ve been the original trailer.. despite the mixed reviews coming out of Toronto, I still believe that the raves it received for its stellar cast will still push it towards a Best Picture nomination. If they would nominate Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Blind Side, and the Reader, I am almost sure they would nominate a film that features the new Best Actress frontrunner Meryl Streep and Julia Robert’s magnificent return to form.
that’s a great point Mike – I think what was shown in Toronto was still a working print. I hope that John Wells reads these reviews and makes some cuts to the movie.
As it stands – it is a good movie, but it’s shy of great….the acting, is second to none.
I am extremely jealous that you have seen the film, I really hope John Wells is taking the reviews into consideration and make some changes before its December 25th release date. In some reviews, there were some objections on how the film chooses to end the film with a shot of Julia Roberts, instead of ending it the way the play ended it- with Meryl Streep’s scene. How did u feel about the ending ? I’m not like others who need everything to be the same as the source, because film is a very different medium from a play, but I just wanted to know what are your thought about it.
….the movie felt far more concluded with Meryl at the end alone in the house….it felt final….the last shot of Julia driving was really superfluous and it really wasn’t necessary.
I never had the good fortune to see the play, but as a armchair film critic, it should’ve ended with Meryl…
thanks! looking forward to reading more of your film analysis in the future.
I never had the good fortune to see the play
It’s one of those plays that jumps of the page and comes to life. If anyone’s curious about the hour of material that got trimmed out for the movie, the complete play is a real pleasure to read. I
