Last year, for the first time in as long as anyone could remember the DGA ballots were turned in before Oscar nominations were announced. This year, the Producers Guild announces a full week before AMPAS’ ballot deadline. But the DGA’s nominations come just one day ahead of the Oscar ballot deadline. That means there is a good chance the DGA and Oscar might not match 5/5 or even 4/5, like last year’s debacle which left off Kathryn Bigelow for Zero Dark Thirty, Ben Affleck for Argo (the winner), and Quentin Tarantino for Django Unchained.
January 2, 2014 – Producers Guild announce nominations
January 7, 2014 – Directors Guild announce nominations
January 8, 2014 – Oscar ballot deadline
Fasten your seatbelts….our awards calendar up and running for 2013-2014 season so far (many more dates to add).
HARVEY WEINSTEIN MUST REALISE THE IMMIGRANT THIS YEAR TO MIGHT FIGHT FOR OSCAR BECAUSE IS A WONDERFUL FILM WITH A SUPERB PERFORMANCE OF MARION COTILLARD!!!
Off Topic:
French submission is ‘Renoir’ by Gilles Bourdos. So no Le Passé or Blue is the warmest color…. I thought Le Passé was very good.
Also ‘Borgman’, by Alex van Warmerdam, is the Dutch submission for best foreign film
or put another way (glass half full)…

1991

The Prince of Tides
It wasn’t a debacle to have Stephen Frears, Barbet Schroeder, Ridley Scott, and John Singleton nominated, right?
It was embarrassing to nominate Ghost, Awakening and The Prince of Tides as best picture material — but debacle was averted.
I understand what you mean, Sasha. The debacle was how Affleck’s “snub” made him a martyr and probably helped Argo win BP.
But I’m going to stop worrying if the Best Picture and Best Director categories don’t match up. I’m going to try to feel that it’s a pretty great thing when an unexpected director is nominated, even if the Academy at large picks the safer set of Best Picture nominees.
I’m going to try hard to NOT see these mismatches as a debacle and I’ll try to coax my best buddies into being happy whenever the directors show more interesting taste than the AMPAS membership overall.
Sasha, I know you were happy for Benh Zeitlin and Michael Haneke. The debacle wasn’t that those two geniuses got nominated. The debacle is how the broad membership of Academy always runs away from genius and into the arms of the easy-to-swallow golden boys.
(yes, there I said it. Ben Affleck is easy to swallow. Of that I have no doubt.)
Its going to be a crazy awards year!!!!!!!
I have added all these dates to my iCal calendar “Hollywood”
Thanks! I look forward to treating all these days as ‘”Labor Day“s of their own! 🙂
