Best Picture was crammed in 1994 with five really great films. Pulp Fiction reinvented cinema, Shawshank Redemption was made richer over time, and Quiz Show is really an underappreciated gem. What a great year overall.

Gary Oldman and Natalie Portman should be nominated as best supporting actor and supporting actress in LEON : THE PROFESSIONAL , it was still the best work of Luc Besson .
THREE COLORS: RED was nominated three oscar ( directing , screenplay and cinematograpy ) , but no picture and foreign film nominations.
1994 another great year of films , especially Asian films : Wong Kar wai /chungkung express , ashes of time , Zhang Yimou/ To Live , Ang Lee/ Eat Drink Men Women , Jiang wen / In the Heat of the Sun

1994 was a year for Best Actress where I would’ve scrapped every single nominee, thrown all of them in the can. Everybody stunk. Nell would have been one of those performances made fun of in Tropic Thunder and winning the same year as Hanks does as Forrest Gump is just too much of a bad statement on the Academy. Foster was much better, charming and different in Maverick. Making her a 3 time winner would have been absurd. Only Winona would have stayed but that nod was more of an accumulation, pronouncement- she also had a popular movie Reality Bites in 1994. I would have nominated:
Toni Collette, Muriel’s Wedding
Linda Fiorentino, The Last Seduction (ineligible for some dumb reason)
Melanie Lynskey, Heavenly Creatures
Kate Winslet, Heavenly Creatures
Irene Jacob, Red
Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mrs. Parker & The Vicious Circle
Juliette Lewis, Natural Born Killers
Kathleen Turner, Serial Mom
Julianne Moore, Uncle Vanya on 42nd Street
Jamie Lee Curtis, True Lies
One of those choices infinitely makes the category much more interesting than it was.
CMG, I pretty much agree with your statement on the Best Actress race in ’94. The nominees were very weak considering the line-up of great performances the Academy chose to snuff. Though, I did like Jessica Lange’s performance in “Blue Sky” and glad she took it home. Also, Susan Sarandon’s nod for “The Client” doesn’t bother me that much, but that’s probably because I’m a big fan of her acting. That said…your list nails it right on the head.
Juliette Lewis should have been nominated, period!!
Though “Mrs. Parker” is really good film, Jennifer Jason Leigh should’ve been nominated for “The Hudsucker Proxy”…that performance still impresses me to this day.
Linda Fiorentino was ineligible because “The Last Seduction” aired on Showtime before it got a limited theatrical run. I wish the Academy bent the rules on that one.
I actually thought Jamie Lee Curtis would make it. “True Lies” was a hit, she won the Globe and she got a SAG nomination for Supporting Actress (I believe this was the first year for the SAGs), but it was a comedic role and we know how that story went back then.
Few other contenders not mentioned:
Geena Davis, “Angie”
Lena Olin, “Romeo is Bleeding”
Meg Ryan, “When a Man Loves a Woman”
Yeah, the Academy dropped the ball here.

Michael states in the podcast that Lange’s win came out of nowhere. Casual fans of Oscar may have thought so as her movie wasn’t seen by many people, but critics were pretty unanimous on her being the odds on favorite. Check out any of the news articles of the day for proof of that.
1994 is also the only year that I was ever able to predict all of the winners. I even one a t-shirt from some fledgling tech company on this new thing they were calling the Internet. Since then, I have a reputation in my circles for being someone who can handicap the Oscar race – even though I’ve sucked at it ever since!!

I ve been listening to your podcasts for a while, but I am not that familiar with Sasha’s writings – but have noticed how she is a self-declared feminist. Now you keep talking about women’s roles today and the 1990s and it’s pretty obvious you don’t give Julia Roberts her due. I mean you don’t have to like her, but apart from her early romcoms, she did mainly star as strong-willed characters who didn’t have to have a man necessarily (or they found out that they didn’t have to). My Best friend’s Wedding, Conspiracy Theory, Erin Brockovich, even Notting Hill, – and even more so Duplicity, Mona Lisa Smile and I suppose Eat Pray Love. Yes, some of them were still female wish-fulfilment fantasies and the quality of most of these is certainly debatable, but the roles themselves were not anti-feminist. (And it is pretty clear that she is a strong-willed person in real life.)
In those films, there was nobody there to rescue her, she did not overly sexualise herself and up until the mid 00s she did draw the crowds. she was the first woman to make 20 million $. Now you keep talking about Sandra Bullock – but she starred in just as many (if not more) films where she was yearning for a man (Julia mainly just got the man, without longing for one).
And The Proposal must be the most anti-feminist film ever. Now Gravity – that’s a different beast, and it is so obviously a one-of-a-kind film that I hardly see it as a precedent for anything involving actresses.
Moreover, you keep forgetting Jodie Foster – a strong independent woman if ever there was one who was a superstar in the 1990s and led many female-centred films (Contact springs to mind). I kind of feel you deliberately leave out or twist the facts so that you can make your case.
But I still enjoy your podcasts 😉
Thanks, Bacio. You make great points. I sort of feel like Julia Roberts changed things for women in Hollywood but not in a good way. I’ll see if I can elaborate on that but I have to think on it some.

Very pleasantly surprised to hear the discussion of HEAVENLY CREATURES, easily my favorite movie of 1994 and one of my top ten of the decade. Such an incredible movie!
BULLETS OVER BROADWAY is also one of my favorites – just for the sheer enjoyment of watching it. I smile all the way through. And Dianne Wiest – wow! Would have also liked to see Tracey Ullman receive more props for her wonderful performance. I actually would have replaced Jennifer Tilly with Ullman.
I remember Meryl Streep receiving SAG and Golden Globe nominations for THE RIVER WILD so I was a bit surprised to not see her nominated. I know people have issues with the movie itself, but it’s one of Streep’s great “ordinary” woman performances.

Yeah, Jodie Foster may have won the SAG, but 1994 was the 1st year for the SAG Awards and didnt mean much yet.
Jessica Lange won the LA Film Critics and the all-important Golden Globe. She was a no-brainer frontrunner at that point, really.
Lange also got great reviews. Foster did, too. But both she and her film, “Nell” also received criticism at the time for its sentimentality and depiction/interpretation of the main character. For as many people who thought Foster was superb AS Nell, the role also drew many unintentional laughs from audiences, as well.

you spoke about women and roles for women and you said that women can carry a movie. I hope you’re right but I don’t actually agree. People went to see Gravity, but not so much because of Bullock (though she can attract audience, The Blind Side proved that). People would go if it was Clooney in her role. but would people love Forrest Gump if there was a woman in that role? I don’t think so even if played by Julia Roberts or Demi Moore (at the time)
