One of several blunt instruments we can use to pound out a sense of what’s percolating up to the top tier of the year in film. If you need a reminder than these scores don’t always translate into actual awards heat, bear in mind that Me and Orson Welles has a BFCA score of 100 — and the Critics Choice voters themselves didn’t even chose it as one of their Best Picture nominees that year.
I’m sure I’m forgetting a few titles. We’ll update periodically if scores change and whenever new significant titles emerge. (Full chart after the cut).
UPDATES 11-4: Nebraska 93/100… Wadjda 87/100… The Hunt 86/100.
Its such as you read my thoughts! You appear to understand so much about this, like you wrote the e book in it or something. I feel that you simply could do with some p.c. to force the message home a bit, but other than that, that is great blog. A fantastic read. I will definitely be back.

I am pleased to see SHORT TERM 12 get the seal of approval though. That’s a film they could have easily ignored and left without a “Critic’s Choice” button.
I see “Short Term 12” second on the list!!!!! I like it maybe has a chance for a BP nomination
I’ll worry about the 6-old critic at the BFCA the day the NYFCC gets rid of Armond White.
By any means necessary.
Updates and additions:
Nebraska – 93/100
Wadjda – 87/100
The Hunt – 86/100
Thor has scored an 85 but I’ll wait to see if he can get it up any bigger.
Prisoners 85/100?? Excuse me, but that movie was a total mess. Hugh Jackman was the only 3 dimensional character. Good for him cause Jackman was great!
Maria Bello cries, Viola Davis is just staring in front of her and Terrence Howard is vining. Jack Gyllenhaal is doing something weird with his eyes.
Al great actors in a messy movie. It’s sad but true
And the movie needs some trimming
ME AND ORSON WELLES was such a great flick
I’ll worry about the 6-old critic at the BFCA the day the NYFCC gets rid of Armond White.
+1
And Rex Reed, if he’s even a member (I have no idea). Armond White is a joke and douchebag, but he comes off as a clown which he is –makes me laugh. Every sentence Reed’s venomous mouth spews is truly painful and you can detect the bad odor that is the stink of his trap.
I loved “Me and Orson Welles.” Matthew Macfayden really should have been nominated.
It’s startling to see “The Book Thief” pop up. There’s been almost no talk or buzz, yet it’s opening in a few days. I have no idea whether or not I want to see this movie.
In defense of beating up on the BFCA, notice how arbitrarily they bestow the **CRITICS’ CHOICE!** seal of approval — wby skipping past any movie with a high score that’s not mainstream enough to be a likely Oscar contender.
Completely ignoring their own scores. “oh, pay no attention to those numbers. just an aberration of accidental offbeat quality.”
urgh, on that note, looks as if I forgot to include some docs and international films in the 80-85 range. For instance, The Hunt at 86, Wadjda at 87. I’ll be sure to insert any missing titles in the next update.
“My name is Tero Heikkinen and I’m a critic” *add the largest smile*
I’ll worry about the 6-old critic at the BFCA the day the NYFCC gets rid of Armond White.

I agree, Paddy, the BFCA tries to anticipate the Oscar outcome. So does this site. The BFCA is useful as a tool for that purpose. That’s all.
I also agree that BFCA is shit — for the same reason. Because they try to anticipate the middle-of-the-road Oscars that have failed to recognize many of the greatest movies every year for the past 85 years.
I’d show you the BFCA scores from last year, but we forgot to give a single fuck about the BFCA last year.
BFCA scores don’t matter shit. They pick the films they think AMPAS will pick. To increase their chances of matching Oscar in major categories (and attract more celebrity nominees to their pitiful ceremony), they expand their slate to six.
They also have hideous taste.
They’re also not rly critics. At least, not of any repute. One of them’s like six years old anyway or something.
It could just be wishful thinking on my part but I think the critics are going to be wrong this year. They just seem too far up their own butts this time.
