Thanks again to Paddy who quite rightly points out that even when 12 Years a Slave sweeps an awards group with 6 wins, Alfonso Cuarón still stands as a formidable rival to Steve McQueen.

@Akumax Nicole is overrated, and so is “The Hours”.
Makes me think critics in Houston and Kansas City don’t appreciate art house film like Blue Jasmine
under what definition is BLUE JASMINE art-house? But never mind, I know what you mean, I think. Now to everyone, Bullock should win, but Blanchett has it in the bag. No need to smear Bullock and the people who recognize her. Have some decency.
I always thought Sandra Bullock had a lot going for her to ultimately win a second Oscar. A big hit, a major Best Picture contender, a one-woman show. Blanchett has on her side the fact that her performance in Blue Jasmine received great acclaim and is receiving a great deal of critical attention. But we all know that ain’t enough for an Oscar (should be, but isn’t). If Bullock wins an important award like the BFCA or Globes or SAG, tides are obviously on her favor. At least this time she would be winning for a great performance, which was not the case in 2009.
And I’m not saying I’m a medium or anything, and you might find me crazy if you like, but last year I dreamed that Sandra Bullock won a second Oscar. I had the very same dream about Natalie Portman and Meryl Streep, both dreams prior to the awards season buzz and all. Coincidence? Probably. Because I don’t believe dreams are “future sights” in any way. For Meryl, you could argue that I really really wanted to see her winning again and that’s why I dreamed that she did. But I was indifferent about Natalie as I am now about Sandra. And Meryl’s dream made it clear that she was a surprise winner, which she ended up being.
Just saying. People here could say I’m nuts or insane and I’ll understand. But since it happened a few times I’m not sure I should ignore it anymore.
Alfonso and Sandra should win everything!!!!
@Patricia Scarpin
“(Nicole won an Oscar because of a false nose, for crying out loud)”
NO, she won because she was great in The Hours as she is great in almost every film she plays.
Alexi, Kate Winslet is a great actress. Always have loved her. I think that by now it would be clear that Oscars or even Oscars nominations not necessarily define greatness. Blanchett kept a low profile for a while in film while she has been doing a lot of theatre in Sydney and Broadway. So.. Yeah.. Cate still the best for me but everyone free to have their own opinion and interpretation.
When I saw how thin Matthew McConaughey had gotten for “Dallas Buyers Club” I thought all the awards would go his way, since the people behind those awards love people getting fat/thin/ugly (Nicole won an Oscar because of a false nose, for crying out loud).
But apparently I was wrong.
FelipeM “She is the greatest actress of her generation… Just look at her filmography.”
Well FelipeM, I just checked, and found out that Kate Winslet is better in her generation. Kate has more leading actress nominations. you surely have an odd definition about “sweeping” and “greatest”
Alexi.. Blanchett is sweeping. Only 2 minor wins for Bullock.
Sandra Bullock is overrated for a decent job done. The complexity of Jasmine was conveyed masterfully by Cate Blanchett. She is the greatest actress of her generation… Just look at her filmography and reviews. Hopefully the academy will be just to her this time.
Blanchett lost again! Where is her sweeping wins, Blanchett fans?
Nice to see Sandra Bullock pick up a critics’ citation. While I don’t think her work in Gravity is the absolute finest of the year (shout out to Julie), it is still a deeply felt, humanistic portrayal of a woman caught in the worst imaginable circumstance attempting to rediscover the will to keep on living. She’s definitely on my top five Best Actress list at this point.
So glad that Fassbender finally got a critic award. I thought the first part of the movie was only so so, only after he showed up in the second half the movie comes alive. He’s just such a great actor.
Yeah, with all of these wins for Cuaron lately, I’m thinking he has a legitimate chance of taking the Oscar, which so many have assumed is going straight to McQueen. The DGA is going to be very suspenseful this year!
Finally an award for the best supporting actor performance this year–Go Michael Fassbender!
Bullock fans need not get overly excited. Winning critic awards from smaller cities is not indicative of a future Oscar win. Don’t forget Blanchett has won 8 or more critic awards incl. NY, LA, DC and just today San Fran. Makes me think critics in Houston and Kansas City don’t appreciate art house film like Blue Jasmine. They love their commercial films like Gravity!
This is great news. And it’s about time a critics group recognized Michael Fassbender and how brilliant he was as depraved Epps!
Forget bullock (great that she is) thank freaking Christ fassbender finally won something. I think leto’s work is more of a stunt than franco’s work, more pathos device than human being. Bout time fassbender took won for a supremely superior performance.
Very glad that Sandra won her second award today!! Things will start making sense once the Critics Choice and Globes starts announcing their winners. At this point, I don’t think Cate Blanchett has this thing in the bag just yet. I remember Michelle Williams dominating the critics awards and then she lost the Oscar. I did look up the stats for the last two years and their Best Picture doesn’t match the Oscar winner. They did get Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress right lady year. Their choices matched the Oscars.
Go Sandra!
Good to see Sandra winning a few of these critics awards.
