Happy to see some love for “The World’s End”… but these looks way a lot, like the final Oscars are going to – probably – be.
I hear what you’re saying, Sally, and it’s not just the AA community. It died on the vine here after two weeks, causing me to unexpectedly miss seeing it. I have to plan a 5 – 7 hr getaway and I was certain it would have a longer local life here.
I blame the timing (this time of year the multiplexes are full of baby-sitting fare to allow for Xmas shopping) and the really bad judgement of a slow rollout.
People are either afraid of it, or they just prefer to have a good time instead (just like the fate McQueen’s other films).
Regarding “declassified/extended version” of Argo, I would hope that one of the extras is the doc, Our Man in Tehran, that includes all the players, our fomrer PM, and Pres. Jimmy Carter. It came out in response to clarify – and generally mop up – after the other fantasy.
Trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LyR2N67Sq0
12 Yrs is losing steam at the Boxo because the African-American community is not coming out to support it. IF the AA audience would support the movie, it would be closer to $100Mil than $30 million.
I’m really happy with all these winners except for score, gravity was way better that 12 years! And I’m super
excited for the frozen and wind rises tie:)
It is a pretty solid film. I would love for Linklater to get some awards attention (aside from co-writing the Before scripts.) But he seems too hard to pin down. He’s almost like Ang Lee in a way. He is constantly shifting gears. He rarely repeats himself. I respect that in a filmmaker.
One more. Gotta laugh sometimes. 🙂
Dewey Finn: [on sticking it to “The Man”] Yes! But, you can’t just say it, man. You’ve gotta feel it in your blood and guts! If you wanna rock, you gotta break the rules. You gotta get mad at the man! And right now, I’m the man. That’s right, I’m the man, and who’s got the guts to tell me off? Huh? Who’s gonna tell me off?
Freddy: Shut the hell up, Schneebly!
Dewey Finn: That’s it Freddy, that’s it! Who can top him?
Alicia: Get outta here, stupidass.
Dewey Finn: Yes, Alicia!
Summer Hathaway: You’re a joke, you’re the worst teacher I’ve ever had!
Dewey Finn: Summer, that is great! I like the delivery because I felt your anger!
Summer Hathaway: Thank you.
Lawrence: You’re a fat loser and you have body odor.
Dewey Finn: …All right, all right! Now, is everybody nice and pissed off?
I’m so ashamed of myself. When I mentioned liking Dazed and Confused and Bad News Bears, I completely forgot about School of Rock. That was another great Linklater movie.
One of the greatest comedic lines EVER!: (School of Rock)
Dewey Finn: I have been touched by your kids… and I’m pretty sure that I’ve touched them.
So funny!! 🙂
So glad to see some Linklater love on this thread. He’s really an underrated director. His work on the “Before Trilogy” is certainly his best, but I really enjoyed “Bernie”, “A Scanner Darkly”, “Dazed and Confused” and yes, even “School of Rock” (but mostly because it was filmed at my old college and I went to school with the kid who Fancy Pants.
Ryan,
Yep! 🙂
m1,
You actually make a great point for why Warner Brothers probably should have waited at least another couple years to release it.
@Al Robinson: While I’m perfectly fine with the exceptionally amazing original version of Argo, I do wonder what else it is that they added. But I’m in no rush to check it out.
It’s the NC-17 version, yes? With graphic scenes of Argo actually fucking itself?
Interesting that the Boston and Washington critics come out so early with their awards/nominations. As cities that don’t get to see some releases as easily as L.A. & NYC I’ve heard and read online that some of these voting critics haven’t even seen a number of the movies that are making Top 10 lists and winning awards.
It may not be as bad as the Satellite awards idiots, by why the rush in Boston and D.C.? Wait a couple of weeks until you see all the films??
BTW, has anyone seen the new Declassified Extended Edition of Argo? I’m wondering if it’s better, the same, or somehow worse.
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Argo-Blu-ray/82121/
Ryan,
I just had a great laugh. LOL. 🙂 You’ve got a great sense of humor, even if other readers/commenters might not see it.
Yeah, prom night….
I think it’s a good sign for Cate that she’s winning even when critics didn’t love her movie. Then again, apart from Gravity, which isn’t performance-driven anyway, none of the top Best Actress contenders are in strong Best Picture contenders.
YES!
12 Years a Slave is definitely the film of the year for me. Amazing film from every aspect. Although I disagree for this film winning the best Editing, (I’m not saying that the editing was weak) but there are better film editing for sure.
Still ,so happy.
Cool!! I should try that. 🙂 Thanks Ryan.
Yeah, I have thus far let them slip past me as well. Of course, the first one came out in theaters when I was in 7th grade. I really enjoyed both Dazed and Confused and Bad News Bears, so I’m sure I would enjoy this trilogy as well. Hell, while I’m at it, I should also check out Bernie.
I saw Bernie all the way through, thinking how could this movie be getting no attention, and not till it ended did I realize it was directed by Linklater. Because sometimes being totally out of touch is the very best way to form a pure appraisal of a movie.
“the first one came out in theaters when I was in 7th grade.”
seeing Before Sunrise in 7th grade would have set you up for some really heart-breaking expectations on prom night
Okay, that’s what I thought. Thanks Ryan. 🙂
Film.com named Before Midnight their 1 movie of the year.
Al, I somehow let Before Sunrise and Before Sunset slip past me for 15 years. I was off on adventures outside the US and have lots of embarrassing gaps in my movie viewing from the mid-1990s until 2006.
So I watched the first 2 Before installments the night before I saw Before Midnight. The cumulative effect was so fantastic, I’m glad I did it that way. I feel really lucky to have seen the series in the span of one day, as if it’s one grand continuous 5-hour film (a 5-hour film with spectacular aging-makeup)
Now seems like as good a time as any to ask this question:
Do you have to see Before Sunrise and Before Sunset first? Or can you just jump right in with Before Midnight and be okay??
I really want to see Before Midnight, but I can’t find where to see the first two first.
Please help. Thank you. 🙂
Al Robinson, I would love for you and everybody who loves movies to see Before Midnight
But I cannot in good conscience encourage you to see it as a standalone film all by itself.
That would be like telling somebody it’s fine for them to skip the first two parts of any unified trilogy and expect to get the emotional impact after missing 2/3rds of the story.
The Lord of the Rings I, II, III
Toy Story I, II, III
The Godfather I, II, III
Imagine only having seen the last installment of any of those and the difference it would make to the emotional investment you’ve built up by knowing the complete arc of the saga.
The one that hurts the most to me is score. Gravity deserved that one. 🙁
ummm @ julian dont be so negative? one of the reasons i started coming to this site to begin with was to see who was winning what, so ive always appreciated the fact that this site updates winners regularly, whether you think it’s relevant or not.
Ryan, take a deep breath…
That last part was a joke. Get it? I’m from Aarhus, this little college town in Denmark, and I do online criticism. Maybe I should do my own little awards announcement. I was just trying to play around with this silly development that awards bodies seem to emerge out of thin air these days. Ok?
The 12 Years win made you go “fucking YES”, so it must mean something to you? So that was why I insinuated as much. It’s there in black and white.
A movie I’m interested in? I’m VERY interested in 12 Years since it’s one of the films I haven’t had a chance to see yet. It’s a lot of people’s favorite, so I’m psyched about it. Really looking forward to it. Loved Hunger, liked Shame a lot.
One more thing: I applaud Kris Tapley for making a case about The Satellite awards the other day. That they hadn’t even got to see Wolf on Wall Street, yet nominating it nevertheless.
I like that Tapley make a point out of demonstrating that it’s all a bit of a scam with all these awards bodies. It’s silly. Phony.
Whats news-worthy news on an awards-dedicated site tonight? What about the EMA’s? They took place tonight. That ought to be news.
You can comment on anything you like. I don’t mind. Meanwhile the rest of us will post about whatever we care about too.
yeah, Tapley is so brave. “Silly. Phony.” Same thing most of us have been saying about the Oscars since we were 12 years old. *(subliminal plug for 12 Years)
Tapley, illustrious member of the esteemed BFCA.
Because all the Oscar voters watched Amour, right? Every single Academy member watched Crazy Heart and A Single Man back-to-back before they picked Bridges as Best Dude of the Year.
It is all part of an emerging mosaic. Certainly a sweep.
This is news? Really? Boston ONLINE critics?
What about some kind of moratorium on dedicating space on minor (or rather, minuscule) awards bodies? It’s going to be a very long, needlessly frantic season if you’re going to keep this up…
You make it seem like 12 Years is suddenly on a roll…
What if American Hustle had made a sweep with the Boston Online critics? Had you posted it then?
Btw: Could I please inform you that Blue is the Warmest Color made a total sweep from the Aarhus Online critics? That’s news!:)
You make it seem like 12 Years is suddenly on a roll…
How do we make it seem that way? Did I editorialize at all?
Did our post reporting the multiple wins for HER from the NBR suddenly make it seem like we were saying HER was poised to be a juggernaut at the Oscars?
You know what you can do if you don’t care about this post? Don’t read it. Don’t waste your time telling me what you wish I wouldn’t haven’t posted. When your eyes stop burning from reading this post, come back and comment on a post about a movie you’re interested in.
Or actually, no. Please just comment whenever you want to piss on Philomena or some other critics group you don’t appreciate.
What if American Hustle had made a sweep with the Boston Online critics? Had you posted it then?
Why wouldn’t I? Are you assuming I’m not excited to see American Hustle? Did we try to bury the news when American Hustle swept the NYFCC?
Some of you people are nuts if you think the Academy has the same degree of bold daring sophistication as you and the NBR.
Could I please inform you that Blue is the Warmest Color made a total sweep from the Aarhus Online critics? That’s news!:)
Link? Or maybe I should delete your comment as irrelevant if anybody complains about you mentioning it?
Who cares who they are? It’s about fuckin time.
Yes, fuckin YES.
All I need to know about the Boston Film Critics Online is they seem to have taste similar to my own. If these choices were the eventual Oscar winners I wouldn’t stop smiling till TIFF 2014.
We post the BOFCA every year, Here were their laughable choices last year. Mock their ridiculous taste. Gripe about how they’re dumber than the Oscars.

The World’s End a top 10 picture. Best Score: and Ediitng: 12 Years a Slave? Who are the Boston Onlin Film Critics anyway?
You guys above should keep in mind that this is the ONLINE film critics organization. The following is what a user on IMDB found about that organization:
Boston ONLINE Film Critics? In any case, it’s a small market and there can’t be many so-called online critics. (edit: I just looked at their site. Oy. Half of them write for a paper that no longer exists, many for their college paper or blog, only one is a recognized and legitimate critic who also annually votes in numerous groups, and another lists herself as “a feminist vegan blogger.” And it looks like they have existed since … 2012)
Another example of absolutely meaningless “awards” being thrown out into atmosphere.
Another example of absolutely meaningless “awards”
Because all the other awards are more “meaningful” how exactly?
Explain to me how Armond White’s taste is more meaningful to me than the taste of any other critic?
I’m sure we’re all going to love and respect and admire Her. I’m glad for any honor it receives. Explain to me how the NBR picking Her as Best Picture is going to be more relevant and “meaningful” to the Oscars than this group’s choices.

12 Years A Slave deserves to win many, many awards, but saying it has the best editing of the year is a stretch. Top ten definitely, top five maybe, but not the number one best editing of the year. Not with Gravity, Captain Phillips, Rush, and The Wolf Of Wall Street in competition.
I am assuming that is the critics sending a direct message to the Academy, since we know every Best Picture winner since after Ordinary People has been nominated for editing. Supposedly the Brokeback Mountain snub was foreshadowed when it was not nominated for editing.
Then again, if Argo can win Best Picture without a director nomination, 12 Years A Slave could (and should) win Best Picture even if it is not nominated for its very good editing.
i’m in agreeance that’s it’s too early but it’s odd that now that the Boston Online Film Critics awarded 12 Years that that changes everything for you.
Oh, it didn’t change everything for me. Even after it didn’t win Best Picture at NBR and NYFCC I still kept it at the number one spot in my predictions. I still think Ejiofor and Nyong’o will win as well.
SPRING BREAKERS getting some love! One of the year’s best! With the best supporting performance of the year! Sorry haters…
I personally wouldn’t call it among the best of the year but it was very interesting and worth talking about. That’s something I can’t say for a lot of movies I’ve seen this year. And yes, Franco was fantastic.
SPRING BREAKERS getting some love! One of the year’s best! With the best supporting performance of the year! Sorry haters…

And to think there were articles written elsewhere about how 12 Years a Slave was “losing steam” after not winning National Board of Review and New York Film Critics’. LOL. Just goes to show that some bloggers need to stop jumping the gun early and be patient.
It’s also nice to see Blanchett starting to get the awards she deserves, and Before Midnight winning screenplay. I haven’t seen the latter, but I did read the script for it and it seems like Hawke, Delpy, and Linklater recaptured the magic they found with the first two Before movies. Can’t wait to see it for myself.
