The Oscars, the Films and everything in between.
“One year from now.” Thanks to Alex at First Showing.
Beautiful. It does exactly what a teaser must do: portending everything without showing anything. It’s time a sci-fi movie wins best picture. If Gravity won’t, Interstellar will.
Thank you so much!
The corn fields, McConaughey’s physiognomy
Two Words: Hoyte van Hoytema !!!
All right, let’s go.
Loved it, but what’s with the WordArt logo at the end?
Really looking forward to this and Godzilla next year.
After watching that trailer, I have just one thing to say, “Go watch Space Brothers on Crunchyroll!”
Nice. I can’t say I was a fan of Dark Knight Rises, but I still think Nolan has a strong track record and I think he’s one of the best filmmakers working today. In many cases he’s the reason I go to the movies and several of his latest films have found the right blend of being big yet intimate at the same time. I want to care about the people I’m watching and Nolan generally successful at that.
If anyone was going through fatigue regarding some of Nolan’s cast members, he has largely a different cast this time around side from Hathaway(a standout in Rises) and Caine(his goodluck charm according to him). Terrific cast with Hoyte van Hoytema behind camera. What a year for Matthew McConaughey. Starting with his charismatic turn in the solid Lincoln Lawyer(still waiting for a sequel since their based off a series of books), this guy has been working to his strengths while also being involved with some of the most interesting filmmakers working today. His work in this and HBO’s True Detective will pretty much solidify it.
I’m so excited! My friend Kristina stayed in the hotel while they were filming this in LA. The set was the hotel’s lobby!
I can no longer trust in Nolan after the shitball that was MAN OF STEEL. And honestly, this trailer does nothing for me. Whatever.
I die-hard follow this website but I’ve never posted a comment. Yeah the movie wasn’t that great but it was certainly a huge step up from Superman Returns. And I’m sorry but did Christoper Nolan direct Man of Steel? No he did not.
I had a blast at Man of Steel. I have no problem with it at all. Pacific Rim, World War Z and Mam of Steel were all unjustly maligned this summer. And they were the only 3 tentpoles worth seeing, in my view.
You should comment more often, Kevin. I like your straightforward unpretentious good sense.
Not a trailer, Antoinette. It’s a teaser. Classic tease the way a tease is meant to be. I don’t think you really want to make up your mind about movie based on a tease that shows barely a single shot from the movie, do you? Surely not. Here’s what I think. Instellar is going to be the mindblowing event movie of 2014. Nobody but Nolan even knows how to make Event Movies anymore. (Antoinette, off-topic, but can you remind me which are your 3 favorite movies of 2013? Just so I can get a handle on what sort of movie gets you excited these days?)
I didn’t think Man Of Steel was a bad movie, but weirdly I did like Superman Returns better. I consider them both to be flawed, but Returns just felt better to me for some reason.
I’m super pumped about this, as I am for every single thing Nolan does. I hope some day he does another smaller scaled movie ala Memento, Insomnia and The Prestige, but like Ryan said, Nolan is basically the best at Event filmmaking these days, so I can’t be mad about him working with the big budgets. At least he puts it up on the screen.
One minor thing, Ryan. Furious 6, Star Trek and Iron Man 3 were all worth seeing, even if I wouldn’t consider them great films. Even The Wolverine had one or two things to recommend about it. To me this summer was chock full of movies that I liked fine enough, but few that I actually loved. Pacific Rim came closest. But my favorite movie of the summer was This Is The End. The best big blockbuster movies came in the fall, though, with Gravity and Catching Fire.
Thank you, Kevin. I’m stupid. MAN OF STEEL was a work of art and I had no idea who directed it. I appreciate the correction.
And thank you Ryan for telling me how to watch a trailer and what I’ve already decided about it. I’ve also never heard of a teaser trailer before so thank you for the definition.
I also remember not being the person who championed THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and INCEPTION here on this site in years past. I’m currently watching THE PRESTIGE. So yes, I’m glad you explained about Christopher Nolan to me as well.
You know Ryan that anytime you want to see what I think of the year’s films you can click on my name which takes you to my lj either directly or through twitter. It’s been that way for years and I remind you all often. So I don’t hide my opinions and I do explain myself. You know that. Why you want to pretend this is the first time you’ve heard of me for Kevin’s benefit is beyond me. I don’t care if you or anyone else agrees with my opinion. I’m not going to turn into a coward who balks whenever my opinion is disagreed all of a sudden.
MAN OF STEEL was garbage in my opinion. That’s what you’re supposed to do. Watch a movie and then form your own opinion. It’s not as if I’m alone in my opinion either. But I don’t feel like getting into one of Ryan’s regular Saturday night fights, so I’m going to leave it there.
Meanwhile, the 2014 budget compromise cuts NASA’s budget to it’s lowest level since 1972. The budget for space exploration as a percentage of total federal expenditures is at it’s lowest level since 1959, one year after America’s Sputnik Moment.
Easy, Antoinette. I hope you know I consider you a close friend no matter what you think of me (I guess I forget sometimes that maybe you only tolerate me?) I didn’t think it was so far out of line to ask if you might want to wait till you see more than 10 seconds of actual cornfield footage from Interstellar before you decide if it’s a waste of your time or not. Now that I know you’re sensitive to such advice I’ll never offer it again, alright? I didn’t know you had a list of your favorite movies on your site. I’ll go check it out. Just seems to me that you’ve said several times over the past few months that you don’t find any movies to get excited about this year. Am I wrong about that impression? Have I misread you or misremembered? You can set me straight. I don’t mind. In fact, please do correct me if I’m wrong, ok? Do you think I want to fight about Man of Steel? You say it stinks. I say I liked it. What is there to fight about? Do you think I’m trying to tell you you’re wrong? I’m just saying how I feel. Pretty much the same way you did. How is it that my feelings aren’t hurt if you say a movie I like is garbage? Do you ever see me pick fights with people who think Argo or The Artist are the bees knees? Let me tell you the only thing I get sick of dealing with. I get sick of how everyone else can say whatever the fuck they want to say on the comment pages, but if I join in to Express My Opinion some people want to think I’m being a big bad bully. One last thing. You called this teaser a trailer again. It’s not a trailer.
ok, Antoinette. I see your post on your site Movies in backwards order (winter)
35 movies. You make it pretty easy to see you hated most of them. You don’t mince words. The first line of your reviews tells us right up front:
Man of Steel. Hated it.
We’re the Millers. Not impressed.
Gravity. Can’t remember it.
42. Forgot it already.
The Great Gatsby. I never liked the story.
World War Z. It was fine.
Captain Philips. I hate shaky cam.
But you know what? I was actually trying to find 3 movies you like. That’s what I asked about. So I skipped down to see what you think about movies that I like.
Pacific Rim. Terrible acting and dialogue.
12 Years a Slave. Brad the Mumbler strikes again.
I’ll ask nicely once more. Can you save me the time of reading about everything you hate this year and please just tell me the names of 3 things in the world you like? Thanks.
One minor thing, Ryan. Furious 6, Star Trek and Iron Man 3 were all worth seeing,
I saw Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3. I was impatient for them both to end. I’ll be giving the Fast/Furious movies a chance. I never saw any of them. I’m ready to accept I’ve been missing something.
I can tell already without seeing much, that I am going to love this movie. Christopher Nolan has made a big impression on the way I look at movies. Especially with what he did for Batman, and “comic-book” movies in general. Before I just thought of superhero / comic-book movies as fun, but not serious fare. I have been corrected by the genius that is The Dark Knight. I have gone over and over all the movies of 2008, and I just can’t find anything I thought was better than The Dark Knight. Then he did Inception and it was one of the most original movies I think I have ever seen. Sure, it may take multiple viewings just to get a good idea of what exactly is happening. But it’s ideas of dreams and reality mixing feels evolved to me. I have been thinking recently that 10, 20, 30 plus years from now, when people think back on the movies of 2008 and 2010, probably the first movies they’ll think of are going to be The Dark Knight and Inception.
The 2 main other movies (that I’m aware of) that I’m especially looking forward to in 2014 are Gone Girl, and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
Although, I must admit, I am still looking forward to February 7, when I can finally see for myself if The Monuments Men is good or not.
“A group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.”
I mean shit!, what’s not to love.
I wonder if Interstellar will be similar to Contact in any way.
Hmm, at almost two minutes this is probably the longest teaser where you see nothing. I’ve no problem with that.
Okay. This will probably be on most people’s Best Picture predictions, until “Ten Months from Now” it will be dropped
No, seriously. Should Gravity lose big time now, it would help this one. Academy tends to come to the scene in one year delay, as last time was the first “slave-year”, so this time a “slave picture” wins. Gravity loses and that bodes well to Nolan’s finale in his prestigious IN-trilogy.
When was the last time a Nolan film was not released in the Summer? So maybe they know that they have something here as he is bit “overdue” for a major nomination (sure, Inception was nommed for BP, but it’s BD I talk about here). Releasing it in Oscar season and teasing it now with this year’s sure-nominee actor. Yeah.
Al Robinson: Oh, Contact. The smartest mainstream scifi that even quickly comes to mind, and see how Academy embraced that (and 1997 was not even crowded). I think it would do better today than in the 90’s when some of the voter demographics have changed and now the older ones are the ones who were part of the groundbreaking 70’s Hollywood.
I think Foster expected a nomination, for sure. McConaughey would be today’s Best Supporting Actor candidate 😉
When Contact is on TV, I just have to watch it. There’s so much wonder and detail in the story (thanks to Sagan, naturally) and it’s a serious movie from atheist point of view. Hmm, well, I’m okay to go…
Longtime lurker on this site, and first time commenter, but I just had to express my delight over this teaser. Perhaps it’s just me, but this teaser is at once expansive and intimate, offering us a taste of next year’s true event film. Like you said earlier, Ryan, I don’t think anyone knows how to make event films anymore but Nolan.
I thought Man of Steel’s story and script were the movie’s weakest and Nolan was credited for the story. Have to wait for the official trailer of this before saying anything. I was just turned of by The Dark Knight Rises and Inception and the path that he’s going these days, hope he comes back with movies like Memento and The Prestige… And by the way, I love The Dark Knight.
