It’s great to see Baz get in there as Best Director. I’m very happy that he’s being recognized, as well as the terrific cinematography by Simon Duggan for “The Great Gatsby”.
It’s a film the other critics’ organizations need to view again. It was a wonderful film – one of my favorite movies of 2013. AMPAS – PAY ATTENTION!
bd74 – I had Spike Jonze on my best director list at #4 published three weeks ago!! Absolutely no surprise.
This is such BS. Clearly influenced by the recent NYFCC and NBR wins. A couple of weeks ago, nobody was including “Her” in their Best Picture predictions. Now, due to its NBR win, it suddenly makes an appearance in a Best Film lineup that only includes 5 films? Give me a break!
Best Actress and Best Actor Nominees could be the Oscar nominees as well! : )
“If winning a single critic award makes someone a lock, does that mean Best Picture is going to American Hustle then? kthanxbai”
It’s going to be a nominee, just like Redford is. It’s time to give up the ghost on this, PJ (though I doubt you’ll listen to me, or Sasha, who has him ranked #1, or GoldDerby, where he’s currently in the lead, or the Feinberg Forecast, where he’s been ranked #1 all season, etc.).
Will LAFCA go to HER or NEBRASKA? (those seem to be very popular there, no?) Or will they get with the program and be the first major award for 12 YEARS A SLAVE?
NGNG: GRAVITY!
DC? I’m glad for Daniel Bruhl, James Franco, and THE SPECTACULAR NOW’s script, otherwise very uninspired
Best Actress, really?
I’m going to go on record and say that Hans Zimmer’s work in 12 YEARS does not deserve recognition, if anything I prefer his RUSH score.
Best Youth Performance nomination the gal in WARMEST COLOR? LMAO
Will normal people only get to see HER and LLEWYN until January?
The thing about Sarafina, though, is that if it got made into a film, I think it would be a major awards player (assuming it was well done).
Oops, looking it up on Wikipedia, I just learned it was already made into a film. Silly me.
Woohoo!!! Go “Her”! 9 nominations, 2nd only to 12 Years a Slave! I’m not surprised Scarlett got a nomination here, Serkis did for Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I think she’ll get to Broadcast as well and that might be it, maybe Online Critics too. I also think Her will do very well with Chicago Critics (across the whole board) and maybe a few (winners or runner ups) from LAFCA, specifically in musical score and art direction. I know “Supersymettry” was originally written for Her but was instead put onto Reflektor…does anybody know if that still qualifies for original song? Or do they even have any other original songs for the movie?
Interesting to see Gatsby mentioned here…great to see Bruhl’s name and the editing. Franco is making tiny waves with Spring Breakers. He was a runner up at the NYFCC.
Newsflash! A (shapely) woman in a black trench coat and large sunglasses was seen fiddling with the ballot box. A guard nearby heard her mutter the phrase, “this one’s for Lincoln,” as she ran out of the building.
Hah! Love it!
Her sure is a force to be reckoned with. Makes me even more keen to see it.
rufus – they must have just updated the site ’cause I was on it Friday and it was still 2012. I agree that this list is pretty definitive, and a showing in the top 15 indicates a real player.
Yeah, I don’t think Sarafina would do it for McQueen (is it even in his nature to work with children? I doubt it). It would have to be unsentimental material, and likely original.
“Her” is looking like the possible winner with nominations even in the categories like cinematography and supporting actress – not to mention Phoenix in the lead. They liked the movie.
I think Hanks will probably lose the nod for best actor as his film is currently nowhere near the front.

first update of the year with very few lists. I like this poll because it uses international critics so you do get some foreign films that don’t hit the USA very hard. But then some American films that don’t open internationally get the short shrift. Either way, with over 700 lists used to compile the top 50 films, you do get a good sense of what are the most respected films of the year.
And in the end, once you account for certain things, you can almost always figure out what the BP Oscar winner will be from this website. I don’t know how much that’s just 20’20 hindsight but it helped me figure out early on that Argo was beating Lincoln last year when there was still some question as to what would win.
There is every chance that Tom Hanks gets left out. That is how great a year 2013 has been. ‘Her’ is looking great for a Best Picture nomination. That will be the first time that a Spike Jonze film gets a BP nomination.
The one thing I see here translating into the Oscars is the increasing recognition of THE SPECTACULAR NOW as having one of the best adapted screenplays of the year. I’ve been saying since I saw the film that its screenplay, at least, would be recognized on nomination day.
I know you’ve been claiming Redford is going to be snubbed all season, but it’s hard to see how he isn’t a lock at this point. He’s got NYFCC and he’s getting nominated everywhere.
If winning a single critic award makes someone a lock, does that mean Best Picture is going to American Hustle then? kthanxbai
I’m sure this is the only place where we’ll see Luhrmann getting a directing nod for The Great Gatsby, but I like the originality in that choice.

Baz….Luhrmann….best director…CANNOT COMMPUTE!!!! XD actually sooooooooo happy!!!!!!!!! Never thought I saw him her (or anywhere) and sooooooo glad he is.
Also Love the love for The WAy Way Back but where’s Sam Rockwell? He needs to be recognized!!!
It looks like Her is making huge momentum right now and everyone loves it so I’m guessing it’s a best picture nominee. So right now it’s:
American Hustle
Gravity
Her
12 Years A Slave
Nebraska
Inside Llewyn Davis
Captain Phillips
The Wolf of Wall Street
Saving Mr. Banks
Wildcards: Blue is the Warmest Color(Amour getting in shows that they’re willing to nominate a foreign film), Philomena or The Book Thief(like how EL&IC did ), Fruitvale Station or All is Lost(independent nominee like Beasts)
Pretty easy to tell from what got nominated in all the other categories that it looks like Her & 12 Years a Slave are the two that can win. I’m really puzzled that Wolf of Wall Street got so many nominations (including Director) but not Best Film.
Very cool nominees!! I am very happy to see Baz Luhrmann’s name anywhere. He really went all out for “Gatsby” and deserves some recognition. (Not that he would be on my top 5 this year.) Also, even though I have not seen “Her,” I just know that Spike Jonze and Joaquin Phoenix are two of the smartest and most capable people in the business, and am tremendously happy to see the love. (It helps me feel vindicated for calling “Where the Wild Things Are” my favorite movie of 2010. Also, “Adaptation” is one of my top 10 films of the decade.) Also glad to see DiCaprio, and think it now very likely he snags a spot (away from Hanks).
Luhrmann in, Russell out for director, interesting… and I am glad that Oprah Winfrey is not building any momentum in supporting actress, as I think there are more deserving candidates (especially Lupita), and Oprah’s presence in the race could distract attention from everyone else.
Steve50, another possibility for a musical for McQueen to direct that occurred to me when watching all of the Mandela news coverage. In the lat3 80’s there was a South African import called Sarafina! that took place in a primary Soweto school. I don’t want to reveal any details of the musical (mustly because I’ve forgotten them all) but it’s something that would definitely be within the themes that McQueen has worked. I don’t think he’d be interested because it’s not very substantive (compared to his own films) and it really doesn’t offer him the chance to explore new themes like some of the musicals I’ve already mentioned. But, still, it could be a possibility.
Very happy for Leo and a bit sad for Jonah and the fact that they put American Hustle and not The Wolf of Wall Street as a candidate for Best Picture.
In any case, In think the Best Actor race is getting very exciting and I think the 5 nominees are pretty much these:
1. Chiwetel Ejiofor
2. Robert Redford
3. Matthew McConaughey
4. Bruce Dern
5. Leonardo DiCaprio
I think that in the next couple of weeks Leo will go up to 3rd place and will be in position to snatch the victory away from the split between Chiwetel and Redford. He’ll need some critics love to get there but the key will obviously be to be nominated. He’ll get nominated by SAG, nominated by GG (and Win) and he’ll need BAFTA nomination to be absolutely safe. If he wins the SAG, then it’s wide open. I think BAFTA will reward Ejiofor with him being British and all.
Will see. Tomorrow will be exciting. A lot of people are prediciting McConaughey but will see.
By the way, my prediction of THE BUTLER getting shafted is coming to fruition. Captain Phillips is next even though it was a very good movies as well. It’s just an amazing year for movies!
“It’s getting tight between him, dern, and redford.”
I know you’ve been claiming Redford is going to be snubbed all season, but it’s hard to see how he isn’t a lock at this point. He’s got NYFCC and he’s getting nominated everywhere.
I loved Captain Phillips but am not surprised by it being missing on a lot of lists so far. I just don’t see it as a big awards type movie.
I loved it but have always been confused by the hype for it. Never registered as a movie that would be a legit contender.
I would be perfectly happy with this being the Academy ballot. More than perfectly happy actually!
Pretty awesome list. Glad to see The Spectacular Now and Before Midnight in Adapted Screenplay, and love for Gatsby.
Never bought the top 5 hype for Phillips, but never thought it’d faceplant this quick, this soon.
Like I said when i saw the film, the last 15 minutes saved Hanks performance but it did not save the film itself from being mediocre. The question now, is that last 15 minutes be enough for a Oscar nom….or will Leo show him the door? It’s getting tight between him, dern, and redford.
who would ever have guessed such a gaggle of veterans could capture all 5 available slots?
Newsflash! A (shapely) woman in a black trench coat and large sunglasses was seen fiddling with the ballot box. A guard nearby heard her mutter the phrase, “this one’s for Lincoln,” as she ran out of the building.
“I was going to tell her she had the wrong building – the Lincoln Memorial is way over there,” he explained, ” but she was movin’ fast in those sunglasses in the dark…that tree got her first.”
Interesting to see no nods for Hanks (twice over), Dern, Adams, Roberts, Hill, etc., when their films were recognized elsewhere, except for Capt., which was quite overrated and difficult to watch anyway (and not for the right reasons). But they obviously didn’t love most of those films anyway, except WOWS.
Luhrmann is a fun off-the-wall choice.
Is that D.C. award a joke?
HER is becoming more and more likely, which is a good thing. It won best picture and directing from the NBR and now it’s doing well here.
And yeah, Oprah didn’t make the cut in supporting, which could be the first of many snubs. She wasn’t a factor with the NYFCC as well. She’ll campaign hard for that, but I believe in the end she could get a nod, but that’s all.
Raphael,
I thought Daniel Bruhl was terrific in Rush too. 🙂
I wish that movie was getting more awards love by the critics and voters, but eh… I can still love it myself.
I Love Gatsby!!! so glad that others critics like it too. Very happy to see DiCaprio in the Best Actor category and Brühl as Supporting
I believe an Oscar pundit (don’t remember which) mentioned speaking to industry people in regards to “Capt. Phillips” and that most of them liked the film, but they didn’t love it. Could these critic omissions be signaling things to come at the industry awards? I mean it’ll probably still do well at the Globes and possibly SAG and PGA, but at the Oscars passion and #1 votes are what matter; it might struggle there if the report about liking but not loving the film are true?
Still no love for Captain Phillips ? Could it end up just as a succesful commercial play ? Weird. I’m sure the guilds will catch on, though.
Best Actress:
Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
Sandra Bullock (Gravity)
Judi Dench (Philomena)
Meryl Streep (August: Osage County)
Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks)
weird how there are no younglings or even any non-english-speaking dazzlers in that group.
who would ever have guessed such a gaggle of veterans could capture all 5 available slots?
Film – Her
Director – Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave)
Actor – Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)
Actress – Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
S. Actor – Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)
S. Actress – Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle)
We’ll see on Monday. 🙂
wow some pretty solid choices. i didnt think anyone would recognize james franco this year..as his peformance was good or scarlet johansson in her so those are very bold moves… oprah is really slipping out of this race(yay) lol
