American Cinema Editors (ACE) today announced nominations for the 64th Annual ACE Eddie Awards recognizing outstanding editing in ten categories of film, television and documentaries. Winners will be revealed during ACE’s annual black-tie awards ceremony on Friday, February 7, 2014 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Next week ACE will announce the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honoree and two Career Achievement honorees.
Final Ballots will be mailed on January 13 and voting ends on January 29. The Blue Ribbon panels where judging for all television categories and the documentary film category take place January 26. Projects in the aforementioned categories are viewed and judged by panels comprised of professional editors (all ACE members). All 700+ ACE members vote during the final balloting of the ACE Eddies, including active members, life members, affiliate members and honorary members.
The ACE Eddie Awards is considered an integral precursor to the Oscars®. No film has won Best Picture at the Oscars® without also having received at least a Best Editing nomination since ORDINARY PEOPLE in 1981. Since the ACE membership boasts a very high crossover within its membership of Academy® members, it represents a very accurate bellwether for the eventual Oscar® outcome.
About American Cinema Editors
AMERICAN CINEMA EDITORS (ACE) is an honorary society of motion picture editors founded in 1950. Film editors are voted into membership on the basis of their professional achievements, their dedication to the education of others and their commitment to the craft of editing.
The objectives and purposes of the AMERICAN CINEMA EDITORS are to advance the art and science of the editing profession; to increase the entertainment value of motion pictures by attaining artistic pre-eminence and scientific achievement in the creative art of editing; to bring into close alliance those editors who desire to advance the prestige and dignity of the editing profession
ACE produces several annual events including EditFest (a bicoastal editing festival), Invisible Art/Visible Artists (annual panel of Oscar® nominated editors), and the ACE Eddie Awards, now in its 64th year, recognizing outstanding editing in ten categories of film, television and documentaries.
The organization publishes a quarterly magazine, CinemaEditor, highlighting the art, craft and business of editing and editors.
This post is worth everyone’s attention. Where can I find out more?
winner prediction: captain phillips
rush ought to be nominated.
wolf was well edited, but not in the typical thelma way because of the script. the movie had a lot of long scenes to show leo’s monologues, unlike past movies like the departed where multiple stories are flowing simultaneously.
Jesus – on what planet is August: Osage County a musical or comedy. Someone needs to call the Weinsteins out on this tacky shit. FRAUDULENT.
so do you think they had 5 nominees for television drama just so they could stick in one nominee that wasn’t Breaking Bad?
There should be separation between “liked most” and “best edited”, but the editors guild, and branch, give out a lot of “just because” noms. with cinematography I get the sense that the guild and branch are actually prioritizing excellence in their craft. Editing just feels like a precursor. What a waste.
Seeing Her tomorrow, but meanwhile, Llewyn Davis gets my vote. Not my very favorite picture, but I was knocked out by several edits.
Agreed with anyone who says HER is the best of the year. I completely concur.
Editing Predictions for the Oscars:
Gravity
12 Years A Slave
American Hustle
Captain Phillips
The Wolf Of Wall Street
It is surprising to see Rush left out.
This is Thelma Schoonmaker’s 8th career Eddie nomination for feature film editing, which I believe puts her 2nd all-time behind only Michael Kahn.
One of the greatest creative collaborations ever and still kicking ass, Scorsese and Schoonmaker.
test.
anyone else having trouble posting a comment?
email me at ryanadams dot AD @ gmail dot com to report any problems. ok?
I’m actually surprised by the Schoonmaker – I loved Wolf of Wall Street, but I was quite unimpressed with the editing. Usually I think the work she does is stellar. Didn’t think so this time.
I think Rush will be nominated for best editing, even not being nominated for ACE Awards in drama. The races scenes were edited very well and a pace that leave you at the edge of your seat. There were in the hitory of th Academy some movies that were not nominated for the Eddies but were nominated for the Oscar, llike:
– Cinderella Man (Mike Hill & Dan Hanley, the same editors of Rush) in 2005-2006;
– 127 Hours in 2010 – 2011;
– Precious based upon the novel Push by Sapphire in 2009-2010;
– The Diving Bell and the Butterfly in 2007-2008 (Julliete Welfling);
– Children of Men (Alex Rodriguez & Alfonso Cuarón, the last one of the editors of Gravity) in 2006 – 2007;
– The Pianist in 2002 – 2003 (Hervé Deluze);
And other cases that I don’t remember…
That being said, I think the nominees for the Oscar of Best Film Editing in 2013 – 2014 will be:
– 12 Years a Slave, by Joe Walker;
– Captain Phillips, by Christopher Rouse;
– Gravity, by Alfonso Cuarón and Mark Sanger;
– Rush, by Mike Hill and Dan Hanley;
– The Wolf of Wall Street, by Thelma Schoonmaker.
Some supplementary information: Awards Daily’s Best Picture forecasting model does feature both the Eddie and the editing nomination as significant predictors for a BP win.
Winning the Eddie is estimated to make winning BP 5.6 times more likely, while receiving an editing nomination makes it 10.8 times more likely. The model rates the editing nomination as the 3rd strongest predictor for BP in the past 30 years, behind winning the DGA (of course) and winning the WGA.
alexww – agreed. HER is the outstanding movie of the year.
pre-masticated.
Having just saw HER last night, I now want it to win every single goddamn award there is. How this movie isn’t getting more awards baffles me. I can’t remember the last time a movie made me feel as many feels as that one did. I can’t stop thinking about it and just want to go see it again already!
No Stories We Tell?
No Rush?
Whoa! I did not expect Her and Saving Mr. Banks to land nominations here. One of those is going out of the race and getting replaced by American Hustle at the Oscars. Maybe both because you just don’t leave Schoonmaker out of the race just like that.
Gravity, 12YaS and Captain Phillips are more than safe. Gravity is winning and hopefully Cuarón will get that god damn Oscar (assuming he won’t get Directing, which is dreadful imo)
Bryce – Do you think Llewyn is still alive despite having no PGA nod?
Finally some guild love for Joel & Ethan Coen. There’s still hope!
No “Dallas Buyers Club”…Big blow for its chances of BP nomination
I think we are going to see Saving Mr. Banks as an Oscar nominee.
ACE is right – “HER” is a dramatic film.
Gravity – dramatic
That’s all I’m confident about. hehehe
That pretty much settles it – 8 or 9 of these will be the BP noms.
Happy to see the love for the Jimi Hendrix doc, too.
