Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

Mrs. Miniver won 6 Oscars, not 2.
Forrest gump was too populAr.
The lord of the rings schindlers list titanic and rain man are the big blockbusters.
Wow, things really start to break down in the 1980’s in terms of choosing less-than-iconic Best Picture winners. Seriously, nearly half in each decade sine 1980 could fall into the “What were they thinking?” category. I’m talking about Chariots of Fire, The Last Emperor, Braveheart, Driving Miss Daisy, Gladiator, etc. I would throw The English Patient, A Beautiful Mind, Dances With Wolves, Crash in there too.
Because some times you’ve got to open your mouth to remove all doubt that you are, indeed, a fool.

True. But does not stop us looking forward. Especially with movies in the next twelve months by the likes of: Noah Baumbach, Christopher Nolan, Paul Thomas Anderson, Bennett Miller, David Fincher, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Mike Leigh, Terrence Malick, Wes Anderson, Michel Hazanavicius, Darren Aronofsky etc etc. Sorry, I salivated a bit there… 😀
will this be the ‘Moses/Exodus’ year? I’ve got the feeling is about time for Ridley Scott.. (to early for predictions though)
Just seen the Contender Tracker has been reset. I can’t lie, I got a little bit excited. I love watching that build up when the movies are added. I think I am not alone in saying sometimes this whole early build up, when you don’t know what will happen, is the best part of the “race”.
@Pete: Thanks for the update on that “bit”–Pete–about the voter. I didn’t know…
Z,
I think you may be right, but given the insistent push by some bloggers and writers that 12 Years was the “necessary” choice for history’s sake, that stories about voters following that exact advice are troubling. For right or for wrong, it puts an asterik next to the award in some people’s eyes (especially after Gravity hauling down 7 awards that night) for such openly shameless voting reasoning. Not to mention it merely gives ammo to the Breitbart/Drudge types who howl “white guilt” at any black themed film.
I think that the Academy needs to somehow put a stop to these anonymous voters running to reporters spouting off that they didn’t actually see movies that they voted for (Hollywood Reporter’s Honest Oscar ballot articles were very unhelpful in this regard)
^I just heard about that, Pete.
When it happened 8 years ago, in regards to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN losing, there was a big uproar — I remember a few articles here on AD about it. Something tells me there won’t be quite the same reaction this time around…
You should have included a scene where an Oscar voter walks past a theater showing 12 Years and votes the film Best Picture anyway.
Hi guys,
I made a Best Picture winners video last year. I even uploaded it before Argo won (it was already written it would win). Take a look at it and met me know what you think.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC4sFayDjL0
I was too lazy this year to update it, but now I have a great idea for next year.
Actually, GONE WITH THE WIND lost the competitive Special Effects Oscar to THE RAINS CAME — another also-ran includes THE WIZARD OF OZ. 1939 marked the first year of the Special Effects category.
GONE WITH THE WIND’s Honorary Oscars were for use of color to enhance dramatic mood and for coordinating equipment for the largeness of the production. Selznick also picked up the Thalberg Award.
I may not be worth a damn with prognosticating current Oscar races, but I know my Oscar history like nothing else. It’s a gift… and a curse…
This from a NY Times piece on the Oscars relationship with art:
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/05/movies/awardsseason/keeping-faith-in-oscar-filmmakers-work-and-sacrifice.html?ref=arts
“On March 18, 2011, peaceful anti-government protests in Yemen during the wave of the Arab Spring turned deadly; 53 activists were killed by snipers. (The deaths eventually led to the ouster of the government.) The day after, Abdurahman Hussain, a young, self-taught filmmaker, met with a photographer friend, and they decided to chronicle this historic day.
At first, they wanted to make a YouTube video, but then, Mr. Hussain said, they realized it was a bigger story. Their 30-minute short, “Karama Has No Walls” — “karama” is Arabic for dignity — uses footage shot guerrilla-style by those in the middle of the action. The director, Sara Ishaq, a Scottish-Yemeni woman, submitted it to film festivals, which led to its Oscar nomination.
The Oscars are not well known, culturally, in Yemen, Mr. Hussain said. Still, after the nomination, the filmmakers met with the Yemeni prime minister, and there have been government-sponsored screenings.
“If we didn’t do this film,” people around the world “would forget about that day,” Mr. Hussain said. “Fifty-three people lost their lives just raising their voice for a better life.”
“Karama Has No Walls” didn’t win the Oscar, but, in this case, the nomination really was honor enough. Celebrity has a softer side, too; we can’t all take part, but the Oscars help us unspool a story that we all want to take in.”
thanks Z, it’s quite tricky though, as one of the honorary awards for ‘Gone with the wind’ is what ended being best visual effects (competitive nowadays) and everywhere you look for ‘Oliver!’ it says ‘winner of 6 Academy Awards’ but thanks so much for these corrections anyway
Real great work!
Wow did Slumdog really win 8 Oscars?! And 12YAS joins what I call the “least loved” recent Best Picture winners club of Crash and Argo (Best Picture Winners that only won 3 Oscars total).
First 43 years of Oscar history, only 1 Silent Film Best Picture winner.
Last 43 years of Oscar history, only another Silent Film winner.
@Jason
…ack.
Also, Gravity is this year’s Life of Pi with 3 additional wins. As per ObamaWins.
Here are the Oscar tally corrections:
ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT — 2 Oscars

CIMARRON — 3 Oscars

GONE WITH THE WIND — 8 Oscars
— Picture
— Director – Victor Fleming
— Actress – Vivien Leigh
— Supporting Actress – Hattie McDaniel
— Adapted Screenplay
— Cinematography (color)
— Editing
— Art Direction
MRS. MINIVER — 6 Oscars
— Picture

OLIVER! — 5 Oscars

I’m just going by memory here, but they should all be correct. None of these include honorary or special achievement awards — GONE WITH THE WIND got two, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES and OLIVER! got one each — because the only Oscars that matter are the ones that are won.
Loved the montage and like Obamawins, 12 Years’ victory is simply wondrous.
I noticed the Oscar count in the top right was off for many of these pictures. For instance, I believe Mrs. Miniver was listed at “2 Oscars” and it won more than that – at least Best Pic, Director, Actress, Sup. Actress. Still, I like these montages.
me, too Obamawins
enjoyed the montage. very, very drama-centric. it underscored the need to recognize excellence in comedy….. maybe in screenplay. Instead of adapted/original do drama/comedy.
Glad 12 Years won. Still mesmerized.
Since we’re talking about music. I just can’t help thinking about how happy so many people are (especially Sasha, Ryan, and Craig), that 12 Years a Slave won Best Picture. It’s like a new day has risen. These lyrics suddenly seem to resonate more:
Music by Mother Mother – “Bright Idea”
I woke up to a lightbulb; every little thing is possible;
I woke up to a feeling; every little thing has meaning;
Now I’m gonna use my two hands; I’m gonna move a mountain;
I woke up to a lightbulb on; every little thing is possible now:
Love is a bright idea; Love is a brilliant plan;
I built my life around a bright idea;
I built my life around the love that I’ve found.
I woke up to a new day; every little thing gonna go my way
I woke up to a perfect thought; Every little thing in a perfect spot
Now I ‘m gonna use my own voice; I’m gonna sing the song of my choice
I woke up to a lightbulb on; everything is possible now:
Love is a bright idea; Love is a brilliant plan;
I built my life around a bright idea;
I built my life around the love that I’ve found

Yeah, the music was truly epic indeed. Again, great job Chris. 🙂
because I love it it’s really epic, I had the feeling since I first watched it’d win this year’s best score..& well, tbh mainly because ‘Gravity’ was my personal choice this year
Geez, of course, I forgot to add 2013:
American Hustle – 10/0
12 Years a Slave – 9/3
Chris, how did you decide on using the music of Gravity?
Thanks all of you for the comments guys! and yes, some of the titles(numbers) were pushed back and I realised when it was already uploaded, but I so wanted to have it on time right after the Oscars that couldn’t bother! I had another version ending with Gravity and REFUSED to make a third one with AmericanHustle, boy was I right! lol) Also ‘Gone with the wind’ was also tricky as it won ‘officially’ 8, but one of its two specials ended up being a competitive awards afterwards

Then there’s the movies that had more nominations, but fewer wins than the movie that won Best Picture.
2012:
Lincoln – 12/2
Silver Linings Playbook – 8/1
*Argo – 7/3
2008:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – 13/3
*Slumdog Millionaire – 10/8
2006:
Dreamgirls – 8/2
Babel – 7/1
Pan’s Labyrinth – 6/3
The Queen – 6/1
*The Departed – 5/4
Awesome. Love stats.
“First 24 years of Oscar history, only 2 Best Picture winners in color.
Last 24 years of Oscar history, only 2 Best Picture winners in B&W.”
DAMN!! That’s amazing symmetry. I love cool info like that.
I was just looking, and it was probably already said, but the last 2 movies to get 10 nominations, and 0 wins was True Grit in 2010, and Gangs of New York in 2002. I would say American Hustle joined a pretty good group. Even if they didn’t win.
(2nd to last B&W movie was in fact 21 years ago – Schindler’s List — but it’s still accurate to say in the last 24 years there have only been 2…. numb3rs ‘R’ fun)
Some of the number of Oscars thing seems off. It credits Grand Hotel as having 2 Oscars even though as we all know it has only one nomination. Plus it lists All Quiet on the Western Front as 1 Oscar even though it won Best Director as well. Otherwise a great piece!
Great montage.
Probably the only time we’ll see a 12 Years a Slave/Gravity mash-up. Even if it was only for a few seconds.
Wow!! That was fantastic! I especially loved how the music of Gravity was playing.
I can’t believe how long it took before every movie was in color.
First 24 years of Oscar history, only 2 Best Picture winners in color.
Last 24 years of Oscar history, only 2 Best Picture winners in B&W.
What struck me is that since “From Here to Eternity” in 1954, all Best Picture winners have won in at least 2 other categories as well, which explains my viewpoint that if a Best Picture nominee doesn’t stand a very good chance of winning at least 2 additional Oscars, then it won’t win Best Picture. 3 seems to be the unspoken absolute Oscar minimum for Best Picture winners, and I can’t see that being broken for years to come.
