Cannes Diary: Coming Home

When the high heel controversy hit Cannes, my first thought was unless you’ve been here ...

  1. If last year taught us anything, it’s that it seems to be a good idea to be seen at these festivals before the movie becomes available to the public. 12 Years a Slave and Gravity seen at Toronto, and they went all the way to March and took home Director and Picture.

  2. So I hope that is a good thing for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice. It’s the only main one I don’t has even a trailer yet.

  3. Yep, it can be said in general that being a festival hit helps a BP contender in the long run, there were only a few winners of this category in the last decade or so that didn’t play at one of the major festivals.

PS. Gravity actually had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and 12’s was at Telluride.

  4. Pretty damn funny that two of the biggest fall movies aren’t premiering at either Telluride or TIFF. Toronto had to go and pull rank with their “you must disclose any ‘secret’ Telluride screening or you don’t get to come to our party” rule has screwed both of them out of Gone Girl and Inherent Vice.

It’s not at all clear that that’s why those two films are being shown at NYFF. Fincher released The Social Network the same way, and PTA took Punch-Drunk Love and Boogie Nights to NYFF. Why are some people acting like Toronto did something untoward? How about blame Telluride for being tactless? You think Cannes would allow some other film festival to screen its in-competition films a week before?

for me, it’s like one of those SAT “Sequence Pattern Questions”
    1, 3, 9, x
In the sequence above, what is the value of x?

Punch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood, The Master, x
In the sequence above, what is the value of x?

  8. I hope they do not release a trailer.

  9. Ryan, x basically means “best movie since the last PTA movie”. I swear it’s embarrassing how high on the pedestal I put his works.

Watermelons, wash your filthy mouth. When that trailer drops I shall parade in the streets…or just parade on this site. Either way there will be geekgasms galore.

  10. NYFF is a good choice imo. I see this initially getting a very mixed reaction. I think a start at NYFF will dull that divisiveness somewhat.
