I just…don’t know. And I mean that in terms of Oscar WINNING capability. It looks quite good, but also seems a bit like they are really pushing for that Oscar-y feel. Kind of like I felt about The Butler last year…really pouring it on.

    Well shoot damn!

It looks “big”, and potentially “long”, and who knows

Who cares about the OSCARS…Weinstein and DeNiro control those as we saw with JFlaw in 2013. Make a movie that tells a story. Make a movie with people who can act. This movie is all that and more. Screw OSCAR. He has no penis!

    Hehe Teresa

Anyway, this is the strongest contender on paper for my money, but it might end up being The Curious Case of Benjamin Button of the season. Divisive among critics for being tediously long, sentimental, and/or old school, Nomination leader, loser to the “fresh contemporary” film.

Looks like a seriously major contender to me! I can now easily see Angelina being in one of the directors slots. I can’t wait to see it!!!

Curious Case of BB is a good comparison and I LOVE that movie. I could see it going that route.

Looks good but formulaic, tonnes of other movies I’ve seen like this, it also looks like a better version of The Railway Man.

“formulaic”? Show me a trailer that’s not. It’s like judging a movie by its poster.

I like the look, which would be Deakins (cinematography) and Thompson (sets). The Coen script will not show thru in a trailer and it’s likely not Desplat’s score. And unless he cut the trailer (unlikely), it’s not Squire’s editing.

It’s only a brochure, folks, relax.

“Screw OSCAR. He has no penis!” Love this, Teresa.

I still don’t know about this. It looks pretty, for sure, but I’m still not seeing any reason beyond that to be excited about this (although Deakins has saved films before, to be sure). People have been talking this one up for a while and I really just don’t see any reason to be excited. It just seems very “Upstanding Great American Asserts His Americanness during WWII,” which we have enough of already. I hope there ends up being more to it.

Honestly I don’t see how this can’t be a huge contender. It looks fantastic, Baity, interesting, well shot, well directed, well acted. It has Jolie, cohens, cinematography- I dunno I see this doing BIG things

    @RichardB :
Curious Case of Benjamin Button was definitely not sentimental- which is why I think the film failed to beat the one that was overly sentimental. I loved Fincher’s film, but it left too many people cold. I believe if Spielberg directed it and gave it enough of his usual “moving moments” then it definitely would have won Best Picture.

    concerning my comment above:

Not saying that Spielberg should have directed it, because I loved Fincher’s semi-dark take on the story, but Spielberg would have given the audience something to cling onto that would have been hard to resist (especially Oscar voters).

People tend to forget that besides “writing” their own films, the Coens, “edit” them themselves, and they are so uniquely precise and precisely unique at this that the process ends up being as “important” as writing the “script”. But yeah, it looks “good” like IN TIME…because of “Deakins”.

Have none of you all read the book? If this movie is able to capture the heart of that book than it will be great. Give me a break about saying it looks too saccharine, sentimental or formulaic to win an Oscar. If a story about man with a speech impediment can win the Oscar than so can this.

Well yeah, but not just any ol’ guy with a speech impediment. He was a genuine royal king type of guy. So that somehow makes him more tragic, because I guess the embarrassment or some nonsense, who knows, as if being a king and being forced to pretend that being born into a family of historical criminal ancestors makes you special isn’t already embarrassing enough.

I am in no way saying this can’t win best picture or a slew of other awards. It can. But if it’s THE film to beat, which in my opinion it WILL be one if not THE frontrunner, the backlash will come as it does and it will end up not winning.

I’m glad we put the subject to rest. I will not doubt this film based on the “director” anymore. Probably wrong thread for that kind of talk anyways because I was talking about quality not Oscar potential which seems to be the theme here. “If the movie is anywhere near the book”? I don’t mean to “troll”, but haven’t we heard that “before”?

“Serious” question: If this film skips all the festivals, and if you know what I mean you know NY doesn’t count. What is that a sign if anything “at all”?

Haven’t heard that since Anna Karinina.

(and I’m the guy who liked Anna Karenina the movie).

[I know that it’s just a trailer/teaser; ideally, we need to consume the whole dish; however, the trailer is already but here . . . and this was my first impression]

The abusive Japanese sergeant, portrayed by a relatively famous rock guitarist in his supposedly first-time onscreen feature film role, is #NOT convincing to me at all at least from what has been seen here. The absence of erstwhile J atrocity and that of the genuine feel of inhumane abusiveness, (lack of) rawness, etc. in this or even other Second World War cases in general, etc. . . . .
And in brief, the makeup department’s still left me wanting for more in terms of cinematic verity (dissatisfied so far [from what I’ve seen here]).

Good things at least on paper: Coen Brothers officially being half of the writing team and the trustworthy Deakins taking care of cinematography. KUDOS!
(I’m not sure how Jolie has ended up directing this film #with the gifted Coen Brothers being part of the writing squad. Good for her.)

At the end of the clip, the back-and-forth lingering, synthesized orchestral string loops that keep going on and on in revelation, the abrupt ending of the score prior to the film title’s appearance, as well as a good part of the whole trailer (this embedded version), is sooo formulaic [lol] (from a viewer’s point of view). Good job, though, in the sense that it serves at least the marketing purpose (I think).

    Etc.

(Will wait and see how it turns out in terms of critic reviews.)

Ryan, it’s my favorite Joe Wright film. I’ve seen it half a dozen times.

Anyways, I was thinking about past Best Picture players and the thing that looks most similar is THE ENGLISH PATIENT, isn’t it? Adaptation from compelling WWII book. Will you guys be satisfied with something like that?

(I’m the guy who much prefers COLD MOUNTAIN)

What is that a sign of if anything at all?**

Oh man, it’s got Alex Russell! The *other* guy from Chronicle. Every time I see his face I have to Google him. He was great in the Carrie remake – okay, no one was great in the Carrie remake compared to the original, but it’s nice to see his face here.

It looks simply amazing. The only thing actually bothering me is how obviously they’ve dyed his hair almost black. It just looks fake. But it’s a small quibble – bring on the film, it really does look harrowing.
Could Angelina (as bad an actress as she arguably is in most of her films) actually be getting a third Oscar already? She truly HAS come a long way. This film looks jawdroppingly right up Oscar’s alley. And I can’t wait to see it. :)

Lac, I happen to be someone who thinks the trailer looks too sentimental and a bit formulaic. But do I think it can win the Oscar? Sure I do. It just doesn’t look as great to me as it does to others. To me it does look a bit formulaic, not totally though. Sentimental, yes but that’s the story and I get it. But there’s something too…polished about it like. I don’t know how else to explain it. It just looks like a baity Oscar movie. Maybe it was the way the trailer was cut and the music that was used. I still look forward to seeing it.

And just because I can, I’m going to call the Metacritic score now. I called Great Gatsby’s score at 55 before it was released, on this very site. I’ll call this at 67. Just having fun with this :)

That looks great, and may get Deakins & Desplat their first Oscar.

I’m glad to see Jack O’Connell getting his big breakthrough starring role. He was incredible in “Starred Up”.
Do you think Oscar will create again a Breakthrough award, for Best Performance by a newcomer ? I think they got one of those in the early years. I would like to see it as a regular award, like at the César, Goyas, and now BAFTAs.

Steve 50, i meant the story not the trailer or the movie that is formulaic.
An angel like man gets caught by the enemies and then he’s tortured and then he SURVIVES because of his COURAGE, i seriously don’t know about you but I’ve seen this before many times. The only reason I’ll watch this would be Jolie, Coen brothers and Deakins.

This looks awfully baity, it would be a shame if this took a nomination out of Boyhood, Birdman, Inherent Vice or any of the other very promising and truly groundbreaking films of the year. I feel we have seen this before, and after seeing it probably won´t be left with anything worth remembering. Seems like a very exciting and diverse year, this films just doesn´t seem to fit on it.

I don’t care if I get flamed for this, but Jolie’s whole schtick really bores me to tears. I am hard pressed to think of a more packaged and stage managed celebrity currently going. Which is a hell of a trick, admittedly, given that her acting choices (Oscar win nonewithstanding) are consistently middle to low brow.

It is sadly obvious that this film will be the front runner for who she is and not what her film says, no matter what the merits will be.

They are a very good way to promote business service.

They only want your money and they want as much of it as they can possibly get.

It’s probably some mix of the two, so I have to give
him props for not going too far in either
    direction.
