I think this is a pretty easy category to prognosticate this year…

    Amy Adams – Big Eyes
Jessica Chastain – for one of her films, PROBABLY Eleanor bc it’s Harvey-backed
    Reese Witherspoon – Wild
Nicole Kidman – Queen of the Desert (if it comes out)
    Meryl Streep – zZzZz

and it’ll be between Amy and Jessica because the other 3 have won. And Amy will lose again.

Suite francaise isn’t coming out this year, right? Harvey left it off his slate in his recent announcement, as well as Macbeth.

So Queen of the Desert is directed by Werner Herzog? Very interesting. I forgot about that. Herzog is legendary.

Still think it will be the year of the red heads: Moore-Chastain-Adams. Could be one more if Kidman is in (and her hair goes back to red). I think everyone would be happy for Moore if she finally wins; she seems very well liked.

Chastain – Moore -Adams (seems very likely for these 3).

The rest will have to make due with wrestling a nomination.
Streep could be a possibility, but she’s in a musical – and that’s always a tough hill to climb to obtain an acting nomination.
I’m really anticipating Colliard as Lady MacBeth. What inspired casting!

What’s the point of an all-inclusive laundry list? You know which ones haven’t got a prayer. Why don’t you just say that from the get-go?

    Like Dislike
  9. Ryan Adams 1 year ago

What’s the point of an all-inclusive laundry list? You know which ones haven’t got a prayer.

Right Jeff. Why don’t we just ONLY TALK ABOUT FIVE DAMN PERFORMANCES ALL YEAR LONG.

That way we can be sure to cram those 5 names down the throats of everybody in the industry so everything is all locked down before we ever lay eyes on a single frame of those 5 films.

This is one of the many many ways the yearly march of Oscar lemmings bores me. People like you want to start throwing interesting alternatives out the window so we’re stuck with 5 preordained annoited “locks” before the movies are even released.

Then you all stand around befuddled on Oscar nominations morning moaning about the boring “choices” we’ve been saddled with.

Besides, it’s July. July. This poll is not going to be used to elect members of Congress. It’s for fun. It’s for curiosity. It’s a summertime game to see how many of our top 10 guesses will actually pan out.

If I try to unilaterally arbitrarily narrow these lists down to 15 or 20 names then that is the first step in slamming the door shut in the faces of hundreds of our readers who still like to have a little joy and enthusiasm and thrill of anticipation in their lives.

I know you’re not accustomed to fostering any of those feelings at HE, Jeff, so maybe you’re in the wrong place?

Sure, we all have our good instincts about which 10 or 12 names will “most likely” be in play by year’s end — and if I want people to know which names I think those are then I’ll list them here in the comments like everyone else is doing. I don’t get any pleasure or ego trip from pissing on actresses on the main page in July as you might like to do.

You know which ones haven’t got a prayer.

You mean the way all the Oscar bloggers last year were so sure Helen Mirren and Tom Hanks were super lockety-locks? Around here I enjoy seeing what people think who aren’t VIP Oscar experts at Gurus of Gold. Sometimes Gurus of Gold has its head too far up its ass. And that’s because people think they have special powers to guess what has a prayer and what doesn’t.

If no laundry list now, when? (Jeff W)

Nobody has seen a damn thing yet, so there no prayers. I (probably “we”) voted for the ladies we’d like to see in the running. I voted for Chastain twice, Robin Wright because of a silly crush, Williams, Cotillard and Moore because they are a joy to watch. Do I really think they’ll get in? Do I care?

Julianne Moore, Maps to the Stars (for the win)
    Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl
    Amy Adams, Big Eyes
Jessica Chastain, Eleanor Rigby or Miss Julie
    Hilary Swank, The Homesman
    Reese Withersoon, Wild

That’s how I see it right now, the only major contenders. But we’ll see how it plays out.

I am convinced “Carol” is getting a late December release.

the Weinstein IMDb page has the following posted about the film:
    -> Carol (2015) … Distributor (2014) (USA) (theatrical)

They finished filming it in April and Harvey is behind it.

If he’s postponing Michelle Williams for next year then he’s not as busy as we think he is in the Lead category.

Also, a Todd Haynes film starring Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara, distributed by Harvey does not need a festival push 😉

He’ll probably end up supporting the most likely names to be nominated: Cate, Jessica, Amy

He might earn a Supporting nod for Marion in MacBeth, might! It’s Shakespeare at the Oscars combined with Marion-keeps-failing-to-earn-a-second-nod-despite-constant-Harvey-support-Cottillard.

I hope Gugu Mbatha-Raw gets some support from the critics–I thought she was outstanding in Belle.

Also, is Nina being released this year? And has anyone heard anything about it? If Zoe Saldana can deliver the performance that I think she can, then I think this role will most certainly make her a major contender.

What’s the point of an all-inclusive laundry list? You know which ones haven’t got a prayer. Why don’t you just say that from the get-go?

You do understand the concept of how polls are meant to work, right, Jeff? You give people choices, and they make up their own minds, without being herded like cattle down narrow proscribed pathways.

We have readers who wanted to choose Angelina Jolie and Maggie Smith and Anne Dorval. How do we know this? Because they chose them. I like that they had a chance to choose whomever they want.

You show up here offering me advice about how many choices our readers should be allowed to have, Jeff. I’m not interested in making you happy. I’m interested in doing something to engage as many readers as possible — and mainly to fling open a conversation the readers will enjoy.

You’d make a great Republican pollster, Jeff.

Q: Which guy do you want for president?
    A) The Godly Mormon
    B) The Muslim Antichrist
    (pick one)

The purpose of this poll is not to tell our readers which 10 names I think they should choose from. It’s to leave the options wide open — and let the poll itself reveal to the readers which names are naturally rising to the top.

People might protest it but Moore would have a better chance of getting a supporting nomination as apposed to lead. Moore has two key factors in getting the oscar nom this year I believe. First is the critics awards and if she wins some high profile ones her name will be more talked about. Second is The Hunger Games Mockingjay and her character Alma Coin should be one of the best parts of the film and when the film does well her name once again will be buzzed and I feel supporting is best for Moore. My contenders for Best Actress which sadly looks quite weak are Adams, Chastain (Eleanor Rigby), Pike, Streep and Witherspoon. I just hope someone from the festival circuit gets buzz because really this category looks less competitive then others

Not really a definite: Anne Hathaway – Interstellar.

I’ve read the 2008 draft and she’s pretty much co-lead (again it may change). Should Interstellar be a major contender post-release (I think it will), she can very easily enter this race- especially after seeing the second trailer.

Moore – Maps/Still Alice (I think this is more likely, playing an Alzheimer’s sufferer is going to take a performance and a half and she’s lead in that movie)
    Chastain – Eleanor Rigby
    Adams – Big Eyes
    Pike – Gone Girl
    Witherspoon – Wild

    Chastain/Moore will win

Are you aware that there are surprise nominees every single year? Behn Zeitlin, J.C. Chandor, Courtney Hunt, Marcia Gay Harden, Tommy Lee Jones (In the Valley of Elah), Javier Bardem (Biutiful), Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jonah Hill (for Wolf of Wall Street, though he was predicted he had no precursors), Demien Bichir, Rooney Mara. I mean come on, they all got in and were all extremely dark horses in the race with almost no precursors. A few of them had sole GG or a BAFTA nomination. And they are the true praiseworthy ones. Ryan’s right, get your head out of your ass. Let’s not call the race in July before everything is seen. That sounds like the Emmys just check check checkin off the same names year after year. How in the sake in chocolate fuck do you want to single out sight-unseen obvious names?

Juliette Binoche & Kristen Stewart in a tie. Because their roles are interdependent like in a symbiosis way so you can’t reward one without the other.
And frankly I saw the movie 3 times, once during Cannes Festival, another time in a screening in Paris and finally the last time in Munich Festival, and each time I loved the movie even more than the last time I saw it. And Kristen Stewart in it, is mind blowing, she really shows in the movie that all her detractors were so wrong about her.Seriously if you have not yet seen the movie go you will be positively surprised. She shows what kind of a great actress she’s becoming, so put your prejudices aside, and give her a chance to astonish you. You will not regret it I promise.

    Amy Adams – Big Eyes
    Jessica Chastain – Eleanor Rigby
    Marion Cotillard – MacBeth-
Kirsten Dunst – Two Faces of January
Julianne Moore – Maps to the Stars
    Rosamund Pike – Gone Girl
Maggie Smith – My Old Lady
Meryl Streep – Into the Woods
    Hilary Swank – The Homesman
    Mia Wasikowska – Madame Bovary

Hard to ignore so many on the list……I had gathered there were lots of troubles getting Serena done–so my hunch told me not to go with Lawrence although I don’t doubt her at all. As for whose place she could have taken–Kirsten Dunst. But I think Dunst has been doing some interesting work for quite some time, notably The Virgin Suicides and especially Melancholia, and it just might be her time. Hard to ignore Kate Winslet, MIchelle Williams, Nicole Kidman, Juliette Binoche, Charlize Theron, Robin Wright, the great Helen Mirren. Anne Dorval may surprise with Mommy if the movie gets enough of a following within the Academy.

I don’t think it’s an omission as much as it is the fact that you are putting her in the wrong category. I just seen Boyhood tonight (mainly because I saw your predictions about the movie on the page) and I have to think that Patricia Arquette is the lead. Now I don’t think she was the best in the movie (I actually liked Hawke much more as the dad) but I would be shocked if she would get a nomination as a supporting role instead of the lead, if she does in fact get a nomination at all. As of right this second without really seeing any of the other films, I would say Arquette and Jolie (for Maleficent) should be the top two contenders.

I don’t understand all the animosity toward Kristen Stewart. I never watched a movies because of an actress/actor’s personal life. It’s a character and plot that draws me in. Whether you like the girl of not the box office ticket sales speaks for themselves. Somebody enjoys her acting ability because she can fill a movie theatre. Be mature and give the young woman her due. She earned her bones in tinsel town. There are plenty stars that have received Oscars and box office sales were horrific. Instead of the academy deciding let the box office dicate the nominations.
