    Add?
    Colin Farrell – Miss Julie
    Bryan Cranston – Godzilla (lolz)
Tommy Lee Jones – The Homesman (category fraud possibility???)
Channing Tatum – Foxcatcher (cat fraud)

  2. Aethelred

    Add?
    Michael Pena in Fury
    Danny Huston in Big Eyes

  3. Bryce Forestieri

Yeah I too have a feeling Tatum will wisely be campaigned in ‘Supporting’. They know these retrogrades aren’t ready to recognize him as a leading man.

J.K. Simmons looks very strong so I’m betting he makes it in, a la John Hawkes.

I have no idea, but have you guys though that possibly Lerman is actually the lead or the “co-lead with more screen time” in FURY and that they might campaign Brad Pitt in Supporting? Doesn’t seem that unlikely to me.

I see Ethan Hawke is leading the poll. I’m not sure if almost everyone who voted for him is going by the buzz of the moment or if they’ve actually seen BOYHOOD and can attest that he’s noteworthy. Wish for the latter.

People who have read ‘Unbroken’, is Garrett Hedlund’s role actually that significant? All I know is I saw him slapping the protagonist silly in the trailer, so I guess he’s one those “crazy” characters, and he doesn’t look pretty at all.

Tatum was on my mind too as a prospective.

So hard to pick just ten from this particular list, especially sight unseen. Paul Giamatti just turns in amazing performances-one after the other–and is so under-appreciated on the awards front–although I really think people in this industry know the kind of work he does day in and day out. Bill Murray–it depends on the film as a whole–but I don’t doubt him although I chose not to put him amongst my ten……sight unseen–what a problem that is. Some others could surprise–like James Franco or even the lesser known but compelling Scoot McNairy. There will be a lot of sympathy out there for Gandolfini and Hoffman. I could go on about so many of these fellows–but I don’t have all day–right now at least ;).

  5. So hard to pick just ten from this particular list, especially sight unseen.

I felt a little ridiculous even trying to compile these two lists. Unlike lead role performances that we can sometimes see coming a mile away, the best supporting roles that percolate up from the broth are often the ones nobody sees coming at all.

More than anything else, these polls this early in the year are just a way to take a baseline pulse, to see what the hive is beginning to hum about. (and a way for me to pick the brains of hundreds of smart AD readers who have honed in on things I’m barely aware exist).

  6. My Current Predictions:
    Josh Brolin in Inherent Vice
    Garrett Hedlund in Unbroken
    Bill Murray in St. Vincent
    Joaquin Pheonix in The Immigrant
    Mark Ruffalo in Foxcatcher

  7. I had Ethan Hawke
    Mark Ruffalo
Josh Brolin (who I think is a great fit with PTA)
    Albert Brooks
    John Lithgow
    Alt. is J.K. Simmons

I picked Channing Tatum due to unknown category placement.

  8. UBourgeois

I was under the impression that Carell was unofficially confirmed or at least strongly rumored to be in a supporting campaign for Foxcatcher? Like, historically I think it makes more sense to put him lead, but that’s what I’ve been hearing…

  9. UBourgeois

    Anyway, my picks:

    The Five:
Channing Tatum – Foxcatcher (pending respective campaigns)
    Josh Brolin – Inherent Vice
    Edward Norton – Birdman
    Christoph Waltz – Big Eyes
Philip Seymour Hoffman – A Most Wanted Man

With other votes for Mark Ruffalo, Ethan Hawke, Robert Duvall, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Takamusa Ishihara (because wouldn’t that just be something?).

  10. Hard to call. For now i’m going with
    Mark Ruffalo
    Edward Norton
    J.K. Simmons
    Josh Brolin
    Garrett Hedlund

  11. I was under the impression that Carell was unofficially confirmed or at least strongly rumored to be in a supporting campaign

UBourgeois. I’m open to make any adjustments if we can find reliable word this is true.

I get the feeling Tatum and Carrell are co-leads, so I was reluctant to put Tatum on this poll.

They can’t both be supporting :) I think they’re both leads.

  12. rufussondheim

Depp won’t be nominated, it’s one scene, more or less and it takes place early and doesn’t have much impact. Robert Westenberg did get nominated for a Tony in the role, but the Wolf was the smaller half of his performance in the show. Most of his stage time was as Cinderella’s Prince.

James Cordon will likely be in Lead Actor. Yeah, the attention is on the three female parts but the part of the Baker is the main character arc of the show. The three female “leads” all support him in various ways (not trying to diminish the quality of those roles, but they all share major time or scnese with the Baker at one point or another.)

It’s a shame the part of Narrator/Old Man has been reduced. That would have been a great role for an experienced character actor.

  13. cirkusfolk

Why is Child 44 and The Black Sea in contention? It was just announced Child 44 will be released on April 15 next year and The Black Sea has a US release date of January 23rd.

  14. cirkusfolk. I didn’t see those announcements. I’ll remove those movies. thanks.

  15. Robert Duvall
Neil Patrick Harris (Gone Girl— Not on here)
    Ethan Hawke
    Mark Ruffalo
    Tom Wilkinson.

  16. PLEASE NO ROBERT PATTINSON!!!!!

  17. If you’ve read Inherent Vice, you know Brolin’s very likely getting nominated. Aside from that, I’d say Norton is in, one of the Foxcatcher boys, maybe Logan Lerman and/or some surprises. SPC should really push J.K. Simmons.

  18. Over at GoldDerby, I have J.K. Simmons as a predicted winner for now. Hope that happens (he looks superb in the trailers).

  19. Richard B

I chose based on buzz, distributors, and prior history.

    Predicted 5
    Mark Ruffalo
    Channing Tatum
    Christoph Waltz
    Robert Duvall
    Edward Norton

    Major threats
    Matthew Schoenerts
    Tom Wilkinson
    JK Simmons

  20. Natasha

I have no idea what Child 44 is but based on the casting alone it looks to be very promising–I can’t blame you Ryan for wanting to consider it until this news about the April release. Don’t know what The Black Sea is either. I’m sure as I learn more I will understand all the anticipation.

  21. Add- Neil Patrick Harris in Gone Girl?
Personally, I think they’ll give it to Hoffman

  22. To Bryce: my vote for Ethan Hawke comes from having seen “Boyhood”, even more so after the second time I saw it. Both he and Arquette so very much deserve nominations.

  23. I went with only 5:

    Josh Brolin – Inherent Vice
    Channing Tatum – Foxcatcher
    Edward Norton – Birdman
Robert Pattinson – Maps To The Stars
    JK Simmons – Whiplash

  24. I totally agree with this. Depp won’t be nominated, especially since the sexuality of his role has been toned down.

  25. keifer

While “Belle” wasn’t a box office zinger, Tom Wilkinson gave his best performance in years as the father figure in “Belle”.

I’d like to see him in there. I realize it’s more of a ‘no guts / no glory” submission, but his acting really shone in that film.

A really good part for him that showcased his acting talents.

  26. It’s nice to see Robert Pattinson on there for Maps, but his performance in The Rover was phenomenal. A24 mishandled the release in the US, but anyone who saw it knows he was beyond impressive. The Rover is a film that will stand the test of time. Everyone involved with it deserves recognition.

  27. UAA VA GANANDO ”’ROBERT PATTINSON”!!!!!!!! OVIOOOOOOOO ♥♥♥

  28. ROBERT PATTINSON”” PERFECTO TIENE QUE GANAR ♥♥ ES EL MEJOR DE TODOSSS! TEAMOOOOOOOOOO

  34. Sure it is ROBERT PATTINSON,
The Rover is great and Maps to the Stars.

gran actuacion en The Rover, impresionante Robert.
    go Robert.

  36. sarah blaine

Of course Robert Pattinson, The Rover is amazing
    and Map to the Stars.

  37. sarah blaine

    ROBERT PATTINSON,
    THE ROVER

    MAPS TO THE STARS

    SIMPLY THE BEST

  38. Robert Pattinson

  44. ROBERT PATTINSON
    ROBERT PATTINSON
    ROBERT PATTINSON

  45. Robert Patinson
    The Rover Wonderful acting.

  46. PS Hoffman is in the wrong category. He should be listed in the Best Actor category for “A Most Wanted Man”. He’s the star and main character!

Ethan Hawke gets my vote for “Boyhood”. I loved his acting and his character in this movie.

  47. Robert Pattinson , his acting in The Rover is amazing
    and Maps to the Stars,

  48. Credith

  49. Probably The Rover is the most underrated movie but
this film is so far the best film of the year and Rob is giving a great performance
Robert Pattinson and The Rover forever the best.

  50. Pattinson won’t get nominated (at least this year). The Rover is pretty much out of the game right now, Maps To The Stars has received weak reviews (56% on rottentomatoes), it will be hard enough for Julianne Moore to score a nom and she is the main standout of the movie, then there are Mia Waskiowska and Evan Bird. Pattinson is not considered among the standout performances of MTTS, he got a positive feedback indeed, but he didn’t get memorable reviews like he did in The Rover, his performance is pretty forgettable in this film, he’ll be ignored.

  51. I love Robert Pattinson performancein The Rover, he is amazing
    GOOOOOOOOO ROBERT.

  53. Stephen

I’m so sick of the fangirls on here whining that Robert Pattinson should win. This is not a popularity contest, it should be based on who actually deserves it most based on their acting performance. That’s why I hate these contests because all the fangirls overrun it with their biased ideas that their “dreamboat” should win even though he isn’t nearly as deserving as these many other very talented actors mentioned here. Now I see that “Logan Lerman” is winning in the results now. He’s another highly popular young actor who’s got a lot of fangirls. No doubt that his fangirls are most of the votes, but I can be more forgiving I guess because at lease Lerman has proven himself to be a good young actor.

  55. Yes, I know that Logan Lerman has so many fans, but really a lot of us think that Logan is one of the most talented and young actors in our generation. check out : Me one and only, 3: 10 to yuma , the perks of being a wallflower are movies where logan has left me marveled with his talent.

  56. Tbh Logan Lerman is a great actor and I hope that Fury will be his gateway in order to let people know his capability as an actor.

  57. Yeahhhhh!!!!
    Robert Pattinson is the best.

  58. lerman good actor ?????? hahahahahahaha
really he is a very bad actor.

  59. I LOVE THE ROVER AND I LOVE ROBERT PATTINSON
THE ROVER, THE BEST FILM OF THE YEAR.

  60. ROBERT PATTINSON
    AAAAAAHHHHHHHH
    Robert P.
    Huhu

  61. Te amo meu divo
    Robert Pattinson
love you my beautiful perfect divo !!!

GO GO GO LOGAN!!!

  63. Robert Pattinson is great, no twilight, but his other films and The Rover are amazing.

  65. Robert Pattinson, lo amo en Little Ashes, Remember Me ,Water for Elephants, Cosmopolis y ahora en The Rover, su actuacion es fenomenal.

  66. ROBERT PATTINSON…………!!!!!!!!! He is a great actor,

  67. sorry twilight fans.. no oscar for Mr Pattinson..

  103. Very sad to see whats happening with these posts. This used to be a great site with people who were truly interested in providing thoughtful insight into the film business and the Oscars. So sad to see teenagers taking over with their fangirl/boy crap.

  104. Forgive me, I am not a teen ager, and I really like Robs performance, you should be most respectfull with the people- So sad for people like you.

  105. Stop saying BS, there are very many actors so we are free to choose the one we like it.
Thanks God Robert Pattinson is not Edward Cullen anymore, he is moving and he is doing quite well, his performance in Cosmopolis was brilliant and in The Rover, is amazing.
By the way I am 43 years old and its not a shame.
