Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

Another “dark” movie. I am just loving this year. Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac really look the part here. And this J.C. Chandor really has some street cred, surely must be just steps behind Bennett Miller with three solid first movies. I am looking forward to seeing this regardless of it’s awards coverage.
J.C. Chandor is not wildly original, but he is wildly intelligent, and knows how to make a theme bigger than what it appears on the screen. He has his mind on bigger questions, which is easy to miss. He is also damned good at suspense.
We don’t know anything about this movie yet except it’s beautiful photography and likely amazing performances by Isaac and Chastain. But that gives us more promise than something like Unbroken does.
“It actually feels J.C. Chandor-ish which I think is why he is one of the most exciting and interesting filmmakers working today. He tries to do completely original films that are in his own voice and style that judging from the first three films are different in each one”
The thought never occurred to me. In all honesty I thought Ray in ’54 was the last one we had of those in this country. Oh never mind, I think I did, but then I remembered the two films of his that I’ve seen and there wasn’t anything particularly original about them, I mean, apart from being “original stories”, of course whether you or I thought they were good or not has nothing to do with a “fresh/original” voice. This trailer though looks *very* similar to MARGIN CALL — because taking on different subjects/stories/periods does not evidence directorial range by itself. But hey, different opinions. To me, nothing about his previous movies felt innovative/different/fresh/unprecedented whatever adjective you’d like to use. I’d list other movies to show you what I mean, but I hate hate hate doing that. Lovely exchange nonetheless. Cheers.
I don’t think it’s been confirmed whether Chastain will push Lead or Supporting for this one. I’ve heard from one person that’s seen it and one person that works for A24 that she isn’t in it as much as we would initially believe, which leads me to wonder if she’ll go Supporting. But then this trailer comes out and it focuses on her and now I’m wondering if they’re going to push her for Lead since she will be campaigning Supporting for Interstellar.
Sadly, Oscar Isaac seems to get the shaft in this trailer, with very little attention toward his performance.
Exactly, Jon.
For those who are interested, NYT did an interview with JC Chandor. He definitely marches to his own drum.

Meh. I see an episode of a TV show and quite a bit of mannered acting from Chastain. I’ll withhold judgment until the movie proper, of course.
Comment on a post earlier. Does it feel Lumet-ish? Scorsese-ish? Penn-ish? The answer is no to all the above. It actually feels J.C. Chandor-ish which I think is why he is one of the most exciting and interesting filmmakers working today. He tries to do completely original films that are in his own voice and style that judging from the first three films are different in each one. It’s actually quite impressive and refreshing.
Jessica Chastain is such a marvel to watch. How is someone able to steal every scene just in a trailer?
Re: The “amazing cinematography”. I wasn’t nearly as impressed as everyone here. I think I will wait for DuVernay, a director who really knows how to get the best out of Bradford Young’s gifts.
This looks good , but familiar.
Oh my God, this looks like a masterpiece for the ages. Both Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain are clearly tremendous, but Jesus Christ, Jessica Chastain obviously gives her best performance to date. The way she says “It wasn’t your good luck helping you out all these years… It was me!” is just… God, this lady is almost insanely talented.
Chastain is definitely looking like the best bet here, although the Cinematography is striking and Isaac already got a Gotham nomination, so those have to be on the radar as well.
I thought it was already announced she is going supporting for both this and Interstellar. Did I dream that?
Was Chastain confirmed to be going lead, or am I just imagining that?
I need this film now.
Kane, watching this, he was the first one who came to my mind too, but then the music and images…I better wait for it. It’s just a trailer and A24 cuts really cool trailers.

This has been my dark horse in the race for a while now. I am not saying it will win a ton of awards but it could upset the apple cart a bit. Just a hunch.
Based on this trailer it’s going to be another great performance by Chastain. I wonder what her team is going to do. Looks like a lead role here, but with such showy scenes she may be unbeatable in supporting. Haven’t seen Interstellar though.
The first trailer was far better, specifically for Chastain.
Bryce, going off the original trailer, or teaser, I got a more Lumet-ian feel than anything else. Once I get out of the office I can watch this trailer and drool over it.
This picture will probably not be sentimental, also there’s a distinct possibility it will not have a single joke in it. Bergman and Dreyer would not approve!
And what is this trailer trying to signal? Lumet-ian? Scorsese-ian? Friedkin-ian? Am I reaching here with…Penn-ian? maybe even [gasp] Saura-kian?
Yes, on so many levels.
“when it feets scary to jump, that is exactly when you jump”
Issac. Chastain. The jaw-dropping cinematography. NOW PLEASE! Just based on the trailer, Chastain has some of the best scenes in the Supporting Actress category this year. I wonder how this will pan out.
