Is it only me or this is generating some intense buzz for Stewart?
I am not optimistic about she getting an oscar nom for this, but I think all of this (including being in Still Alice) is a start of building a narrative which might help her at getting nominations in the future. I can already see “Kristen Stewart, the one who made history” in a future oscar campaign or something.
@Ubourgeois, Thanks for the reply and the info. cheers.
I’m happy for Kristen, but she should wash madam Binoche’s feet.
Hey Ryan Adams,
were you hurt? What about that dumb sentence about “French welcoming globalization”?
What about that dumb sentence about “French welcoming globalization”?
Any French person who wants to dispute that is free to do so. Not my purview.
Good for her! She has already achieved something Streep has not even been able to do!!!! Love it!!!!
@Daveinprogress: Timbuktu was a French-Mauritanian co-production, Mommy was an entirely Canadian production
That makes Stewart the first American actress to win a Cesar award. Am I surprised? Yes. Still, good for her. She should be proud. Unfortunately, just about nobody gives a shit about those awards in America, so I’m not sure how much it will help her career. At least she’ll have some level of prestige now, I suppose.
Could somebody explain to me why Mommy is classified as a Foreign Film for the Cesars and Timbuktu is eligible in their general categories? Thanks.
I was positively surprised to see what a racially diverse group got nominated at the Cesar. This a year after LGBT cinema scored a lot of nomination even if not wins.
It’s interesting to note that while AMPAS gets accused here on Awardsdaily of favoring young actresses, the winner of the lead actress Adele Haenel is only 25 and she also won best supporting actress last year and she also had two previous nominations in best newcomer category. And the winner of the best supporting actress category was Kristen Stewart who is only 24 years of age.
When was the last time both Oscar winners in actress categories were 25 or under?
I have to be honest: If you had asked me who would be the first American actress to win a Cesar, Stewart wouldn’t have been in my top 100.
I’m happy for KS too!
French foreign policy supports strong relationships Francophone countries, mostly its former colonies. Goes back to Charles de Gaulle. There are a lot of French business interests in these places and a lot of French citizens live in them. So it does not surprise me that they award a film from a Francophone country.
very happy for Stewart (well, as much as I can be – she is the spitting image of my ex-fiancée, and even though it’s been a while, seeing her face stirs up memories) on her well deserved win and ECSTATIC for “The Salt of the Earth” winning best Documentary, if I may be unusually patriotic for once.
Are Americans welcoming globalization? As far as I know Americans are the ones who can’t stand subtitles
As far as I know Americans are the ones who can’t stand subtitles
there are no Americans around here who can’t stand subtitles.
what other crude generalizations would you like for us to help you get over?
I’m happy for Kristen. Could this be a sign that the French are welcoming globalization?
Since “Force Majeur” wasn’t even Oscar nominated for BFF, I will be happy if AMPAS follows suit and awards it BFF on Sunday night.
As for Kristen? Well . . . as everybody knows on this site, I am NOT a fan of hers. But so be it. If AMPAS can give Sandra Bullock an Oscar, then why can’t the Ceasars give one to Stewart? That evens things out a big in my view of the world. Given the French love for Jerry Lewis (? ? ? ! ! !), this kind of makes sense. She’s in great company, according to them.
Stewart is progessing quite fast. Who would’ve guesed?
She has 3 movies that sound interesting coming out this year. 5 in America including Clouds of Sils Maria and Still Alice for which Moore is likely to win an Oscar, and she has been getting good reviews as well as all of her movies. If she keeps on track, I’d say in 5 years her Twilight stigma will be generally dead.
I truly, truly, TRULY can’t put into words how happy I am for “Timbuktu”s success at the César; it’s easily one of the best films that I have seens in recent times. A memorable film indeed. Hand it to the French, they know how to do it.
3 Oscar voters whom I spoke with all voted for “Timbuktu”. Love that. And love that Mommy won Best Foreign Film, it challenges Mr. Turner and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya as the most overlooked film of the year. As for Kristen, I can’t say whether or not I think she deserved to win as I haven’t yet seen all the nominees, but she gave an excellent performance. And she was also very fine in Still Alice. Good actress.
I’m just impressed that she won a legitimate (Non fan vote) related award of any kind.
The guy who gave her the award? He was nasty! He slammed her award down when she told him her hands were shaking.
Hopefully Stewart will get better roles now. I’d like to see her getting her own Monster kind of vehicle.
Praise Jesus for Mommy! Such a brilliant movie!
Finally someone recognizes the greatness of Mommy <3
Seven awards – couldn’t be more thrilled for Timbuktu. And I thought the whole awards season was going to be a washout.
If it wins on Sunday, expect a 3.5 seismic reading in the Pacific Northwest.
Liberals patting themselves on the back calling for more more tax credits for Film productions while cursing the rich (of which most of them belong btw) before heading to the most expensive restaurant in Paris for their after-party.
I’m off to bed suckers! Enough with this non-sense…
TIMBUKTU!
What a night!
MOMMY wins Foreign, SAINT LAURENT for Costumes, THE SALT OF THE EARTH for Documentary — the highlights for me.
Shocker! (I have to add words bc my comment was too short!) Why is that? I like one-worders.
Really? I like songs, as long as they’re not too lame, which is usually the case actually.
” It is forbidden to stop speeches because it would be an attack on freedom of expression. So they can go on and on and on forever talking about their grocery list or whatever.”
That’s much better than having the FIVE Best Song nominees performed and suck all the oxygen out the Kodak
hell yes Timbuktu and Mommy. And good for Stewart, although I do hope her career goes better than Adrien’s did. I do enjoy her fans calling this award better/more prestigious than an oscar when 2 months ago they didn’t even know these awards existed…
We’ll be lucky if they manage to finish this thing before the Oscars begin… It is forbidden to stop speeches because it would be an attack on freedom of expression. So they can go on and on and on forever talking about their grocery list or whatever.
Mommy, Stewart and all the love for Timbuktu…as I just said on Twitter: FUCK yeah!
Thank the gods for the French – this year at least.
Get the fuck out
And she saluted Olivier Assayas and embellished him with superlatives — now I can take anything Sunday night brings.
