All you fucks ragging on Jason Segel are going to feel pretty stupid after seeing “The End of the Tour.”
It should just be a rule that if you’re nominated you’re in the Academy after that. It might actually make them nominate better.
p.s. Jason Segel is super talented and should have been nominated in the Song category twice by now. 😛
It really is strange that Trent Reznor and Johnny Greenwood weren’t invited until now…but they’ve been invited and a happy clam I am.
I’m still going through the list to check the details, (it’s pride weekend here in SF, so I’m working a lot of extra hours and trying to have at least a little fun), but a few specifics that I’ve caught so far:
Patricia Arquette’s absence should be taken to mean she’s already a member — not that they snubbed her. They can be sexist and stupid sometimes but they aren’t SO sexist and stupid that they’d leave her out — especially in a year where they’re obviously trying so hard to show their inclusiveness. And especially since they know that she would call them out for it if they did. She’s not exactly one to put up with their sexism without a fight (and rightly so!)
RE: Reznor & Ross. It’s true that the Academy is partly “who you know”, and that a nomination or win can get you early consideration, but for a lot of these branches they want to see a certain number of screen credits and/or years in the FILM industry (not just music elsewhere), which they didn’t have at the time of their win. Plus, back in 2010/2011, they were still limiting the number of invitees. Still, I’m glad to see them get in at last.
Fun fact #1: A few of the Oscar Winners and Nominees that still haven’t been invited to the Academy yet (and who AD readers might actually know) include: Adele Adkins, Rinko Kikuchi, Abigail Breslin, Hailee Steinfeld, Quvenzhane Wallis, Eminem, Karen O, the guys from Three 6 Mafia, the guys from Counting Crows (nominated for Shrek 2), Will Butler (composer for Her), Anne Sophie-Bion (film editor for The Artist), Nicolas Chartier (Producer of The Hurt Locker), Nat Faxon (writer of The Descendants), Robert Kondo (nominated for The Dam Keepers), and Diana Ossana (producer of Brokeback Mountain).
Fun Fact #2: New invitee Dave Grusin used to be an academy member, and even sat on the Academy’s Board of Governors for a while, but then he quit the Academy sometime in the 1970’s. I’m not sure whether this new invitation means that he’s changed his mind and will actually rejoin, or if it just means that the current Board doesn’t know that history and/or is hoping to mend fences.
…or if it just means that the current Board doesn’t know that history and/or is hoping to mend fences.
Sounds like America and Jeb Bush
Dave Grusin won an Oscar in 1989 and he’s now only a member of the academy? Strange. Unless he’s only just accepted it now.
Based on previous demographics, this may have changed the percentage of the academy that is female from 23% to maybe 24 or 25%, and the POC are probably bumped up from 6% to maybe 6.5 or 7% now. Woohoo?
85 women on that list, by my count, or 26% of the list. Haven’t run what percentage are POC. Probably a similar percentage. Yes, this moves the needle a tiny bit, but they’d need a new list of invitees to be vast majority women and POC to really make a dent in changing the academy’s landscape.
Was Patricia Arquette a member of the academy before? If not, why was she not invited? =O
I can’t believe Joe Wright (“Anna Karenina,” “Atonement”) wasn’t invited before. Unless he WAS invited but refused to join, which is also a possibility.
I wish they would release the names of all the Academy members whose voting privileges have been temporarily suspended because they (a) gossip cattily and anonymously with S— F——, or (b) claim to be unable to think of more than 5 movies per year that they don’t sneer at.
Note: There are certain names [non-actors’] I don’t recognize even though I may have experienced and enjoyed/liked/loved their professional efforts respectively (in no regard to the contributions’ titles also being shown). (Which means that some names may be left unsaid for reasons.)
–
But, sorry, Fast’s fans worldwide, Better Luck aside, Justin Lin’s name […] on the list somewhat makes me pull a Crash Test D and go “hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm . . . .”. . . .
–
I know (of course, not personally) Elizabeth Banks and Heather Graham [I particularly enjoyed the latter’s performance in Bowfinger, etc.] but am not sure if, especially relatively speaking, they were meant to be, this time round.
–
Etc. [for better or worse]
–
Anyway, all in all, I’m under the impression that, even though certain names more or less seem to rep the by-product of Oscar-political connection and the likes [I might be wrong], the Academy has seemingly been making an effort to recognize those who may have not been nominated but recently or continually widely praised by their peer groups, critics and certain circles of viewers regardless of race, gender, etc., as long as their contributions have been recognized by the institute itself and — like it or not — those in the US market itself.
nuts they didn’t bring in Radcliffe until now.
I can finally sleep tight knowing that Jason Segel can now vote for the Oscars. Haha! J/K. It’s actually pretty cool to see some new fresh faces. Hopefully they’ll help turn the Oscars back around. 🙂
As for you Paddy, take this objectively, there’s really no need to throw comments which make me look like I’m against women or gays getting into cinematographer’s branch.
No, didn’t do that. Just gave some suggestions, my thoughts on why it’s great that Rachel Morrison is now an AMPAS member, and disagreed with your argument. I never tried to make you look sexist or homophobic, never intended to imply that, never actually did imply that. You’re the one who brought it up.
And it really is unfair that a cinematographer like Hoye van Hoytema had to do exceptional work in movies like Her and Interstellar to become a member and some cinematographers like Rachel Morrison became a member after working on films like Cake and Fruitvale Station.
Meh. Alas, Murtaza, your opinion means shit in the making of this decision. Maybe the Academy’s cinematography branch – a collection of experts who, imo, regularly make the best artistic choices of all the Academy’s many branches – genuinely felt that Rachel Morrison deserved to become a member. Maybe it’s just fucking fantastic that this branch, still the only one never yet to have nominated a woman, feels that a bit of diversity might make it an even better gauge of the best cinematography of the year. An openly gay woman is now a member of the Academy’s cinematography branch. Fuck yeh. Straight white men can wait in fucking line, right behind where the rest of us have had to wait for decades.
Is this the most diverse lineup of new invitees to date? So many more women and POC than I think I’ve noticed before! I was very pleased at the new members last year – lots of them looked like they had a lot to contribute to the Academy’s collective tastes, artistically – but the nominations in January were so disappointing! Hopefully the ethnic and gender diversity this year will help to improve things next January…
