Speaking of “random foreign submissions”, I caught up with last year’s nominee “A Cat in Paris” last nite — what a disappointment. Another example of the Academy voting on the basis of the animation *alone* — they must’ve watched it with the sound on mute because the writing was atrocious. Was there a French-with-subtitles version, maybe?
My faves this year: “Frankenweenie”, “Para-Norman”, “Pirates…” and “Brave”. have yet to see “Ralph” or “Guardians”.
“The Lorax” better not get in. It’s in my opinion one of the worst films of the year and a complete insult to the original book.
At your service, Unlikely hood!
Thanks for answering chris price!
“Is Brave really that much worse than Wall-E and Up?”
YES
“Brave” has ZERO percent chance at a BP nomination, with or without Cars 2 existing. It’s fighting for a spot in the animation 5 as it is.
Frankenweenie
Wreck-It Ralph
Paranorman
The Pirates! Band Of Misfits
Madagascar 3
Hotel Transylvania
Rise Of The Guardians
The Lorax
From Up On Poppy Hill
Brave
Ice Age Continental Drift
The Rabbit’s Cat
These are the movies that have a realistic shot at the 5. My best guess right now is that “Brave” does get in and the 5 looks like this:
Brave
Frankenweenie
Wreck-It Ralph
The Lorax
ParaNorman
The Noms for the European Film Awards 2012 are published – Haneke’s Amour in the lead (six nominations), following Vinterbergs Jagten and McQueens Shame (each five noms), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (four), Caesar Must Die and The Intouchables (each three).
No Love for Audiard’s Rust and Bone! Take a look via

Do they even still have that threshold? At least they passed it. I don’t like it when there aren’t a full five nominees in all categories (there never are anyway, Make-Up is bloody always three)…even Best Picture…
As long as the winner is not Dreamworks or Sony or Fox Animation, who all make pop trash, we’re good. And yes, HTTYD was still a by-the-numbers cartoon. And that dragon looked liked a tadpole face stuck to a black puppy body
Based on critic’s talk, the list of 2013 best animated features nominees WILL BE:
– BRAVE
– PARANORMAN
– FRANKENWEENIE
– WRECK IT RALPH
– RISE OF THE GUARDIANS
I’m not sure about the winner anymore, because I considered “Arriety” the best one. But since it wasn’t even submitted…
I think we’re looking at:
-Frankenweenie
-Brave
-Wreck-it Ralph
-Pirates
and then… maybe Madagascar 3 or ParaNorman?
Why not the brazilian movie “A Tale of Love and Rage” ????

So which is the BEST animated film this year?
I know this sounds crazy but Madagascar 3 is actually GOOD and definitely better than previous 2 or most DreamWorks animations. It is a bit cliched, true but is definitely better than Brave (What happened to you Pixar!!?).
The ones I think are most deserving are these:
“Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted”
“ParaNorman”
“The Pirates! Band of Misfits”
“Wreck-It Ralph”
Sadly, the nominees will probably be:
– Brave
– Frankenweenie
– Lorax
Tangled’s problem back in 2010 is the same happening this year in the best actor category: over competition. Toy Story 3 and HTTYD were locks and The Illusionist was a very acclaimed stylish foreign entry. With only 3 slots, it was tough for it to get in.
Luckily they changed the rules and foreign entries are all over nowadays to make sure that it ends up a 5-nominees-category. Tangled and Despicable Me deserved to be number 4 and 5 that year and actually could even have won in years like 2011.
Corpse Bride is overrated. Wallace and Gromit deserved the win that year. Corpse Bride is beautifully made but boring and unengaging. It’s no match for either Nightmare Before Christmas or Coraline.
But this category is weird. Tangled, Disney’s best since the 90’s, should (at least) have been nominated last year. And a couple of years before that, Happy Feet won on box-office alone in a weak year, where Monster House should have won. Surf’s Up was nominated in stead of The Simpsons Movie. Shark Tale stole The Polar Express’s nomination. Every year there’s a weird snub, mostly because the nomination branch always chooses at least 1 nominee for just “looking” different in stead of counting the story/script. That’s how “bad” looking animation films like The Simpsons Movies get snubbed, even though as a whole it deserved to be there – at least over Surf’s Up! And Shark Tale – don’t get me started…
Thanks to Clayton and Anon for the explanation. That kind of sucks. I was hoping to see it nominated, though I got the same vibe I had with Ponyo two years ago, so maybe it wouldn’t have happened anyway.
They passed the threshold for five nominees. That being 16 or more. Pretty certain it’s 5.
As for Arriety, it didn’t qualify because it came out in Japan in 2010. Had it gotten a qualifying run last year, it would’ve qualified.
Arrietty wasn’t eligible because there was too much of a lag between its Japanese release and its stateside release. Disney dropped the ball and should’ve released it for an Oscar-qualifying run last year.
Hoping for Brave, ParaNorman, and Wreck-It Ralph to make it in. Lots of neat-looking ones I’ve yet to see.
Predictions:
-Brave
-Frankenweenie
-Wreck-It Ralph
If there are two more spots:
-ParaNorman
-Random foreign submission (there’s usually one every year)
I also wouldn’t count out Madagascar, considering how much of a money-maker it is, and the general consensus that the sequels have gotten progressively better.
Wreck-it Ralph MUST win! Really good!
Does anyone know why ARRIETY was snubbed?
Question for everyone: if Cars 2 had never come out, would we all be putting Brave on our shortlist of, say, the 12 or 15 BP possibles? Is Brave really that much worse than Wall-E and Up, or did Pixar irretrievably damage the brand for the sake of a few new rides at Disneyland?
And The Rabbi’s Cat! Hooray!
Gotta say… I think “Paranorman” is much better than “Frankenweenie.”
JP:
I agree. Frankenweenie is getting the best reviews of Burton’s career.
I just loved it.
Considering he lost for the incredible “Corpse Bride”, I think Frankenweenie would be a great choice for Best Animated Film.
Frankenweenie for the win! It’s Burton’s time!
No Arriety? 🙁 I made my first predictions yesterday and it was on them lol. From Up on Poppy Hill though!
