Ryan and Sasha, is the website not working on chrome? It hasn’t been for me. I might just have to update chrome though
We’ll check to see what’s happening Alex. Thanks!
Hope Ejiofor will win with Leo and McCon splitting votes
OMG! seriously oscar can you please get some consistency? 8 nominations one year, 10 the other, less the next now back to 9?
What the real story here? someone make oscars agonizing inconsistency stop it giving a lot of us a almighty headache.
Fortunatey OScar have come to their senses GRAVITY the film thjat NOBODY exzpected would shake the foundtions and prconceptions of oscar has proven it mettle to get big prize nominations not even oscar would snub it for a nomination.
Eventful, Majestic, genre redefining and cinematic medium wise…with the best performance just about of Bullock’s career stnning visuals an experience that ash curious paralleles to 2001 but will this parallel work against it? are the 10 noms a cover for academy to taunt and tortur the audience of promise on the never never? ot never embrce sci fi based films in fact or fiction?
And what about the much overhyped 12 years a slave? Ok great…just like hurt locke year is this a exercise in oscar exorcising their guilty concience creating a false historic triumph that shoudl never have come to this? i sorry but the fact as Sasha mentioned before..there been some RARE occassions yes rarer thanb volume of women snubbed as filmnmakers/ producers, etc but nervtheless they been present in oru film history oscar turned their nose and their backs on embracing black filmmakers/ cast etc, and now they put themselves in the shameful position of proclaiming this oscar will be historic |because we feel guityl for snubbing equally worthy past black filmmakers of films of similar type..cos we feel guilty this is history..cos we finally wake up from our ignorant slumber.”
Well to be honest…if that the main reason 12 years shoudl win it clearly does not deserve to win which means it probably will woo pee doo:P
I make no apology for my cynicism and pessimism with all things oscar it shoudl be pretty clear to us they way they swing…if not 12 years then American Hustle
At least this film is based on merit alone..the equal lead nominations reflect this…but no make up and hair? esp for Bale’s forgettable/ unforgettsable strugle to ‘construct’ his hair together in opening sequence?:P cmon..eloquent, grand in the 70’s style…and a non violent yet twisted caper no less with realy big time once existing historic figures..not to mention head of th mafia whoah no guilt here just fimmaking at it most traditional best…at LEAST have this film win if Gravity doesnt at least.
But of course excuses excuses…oscar will find them every bloody time..year after year. decade after decade…we still the same old frukin story. “oh we feel guilty better ‘make history’ cos we snubb this stereotype or that sterreotpye or this eprson type or that genre.” oh look it i owe you time…come on down…we snubbed you for your past greater films let reward you for something slightly yet sginificantly les worthy.
“LEt back the little film that could cos we feel guilty for snubbing BETTER past MORE meorable independent films….
“let screw the blockbusters to hell cos as brilliant in standard as they are (ala the dark knight acredited solely for oscars sensible decision the ONLY good one they made since after ROTK one amaxing they had the senser to embrace that film as it deserved to increase nominations past 5) but let screw and dump on block busters…cos they not conservative enough, they have the odd cheesy mopment even if they craftsmanship and contribution to cinema surpasses pother contenders (circa AVATAR- ACREDITED FOR ENABING gRAVITY TO happen as it has) .
So need i go on?
Rest of the nominations predictable..but what really gets a lot of pple as Sasha has said is how some films have missed in certain categories that they deserved to be recognized in backward logic at work again in terms of whre the nominations should have been for some films where minor snubs but significant ones p[otentialy to films chances have been well snubbed.
Honestly how many pple have seen PHilomena, or HER? how successful has it been at the box office and yes! IT BLOODY important why? a films success is not measured just by critics or oscars elitist antics, it measured by it appeal care and respect and influence over the public and the very notion of the film capxacity to conform to AMPAS (hello motion picture arts and sciences calling), sooo? so why have oscar deviated from this formula.
Did “Her ” and “PHilomena” actually be seen by enough ppe? do independent film companies make enough effort to increasr their screntime, quanitty fo screens? can they eb bothered? these obscure films have had their day in the sun time for oscar to embrace common sense.
Sme predictable i admit i dont now how highly they should rate or deserve to rate…wolf of wall st etc.. but i if oscar can find excuses for lesser seen fims that most of the globa audience or even half of film goers cannot see or engage with, then reality i sorry to say is no excuse to do just 9 nominations..
ask yourself has oscar earnt your respect to the point they dont deserve public cynicism? the fact of 9 nominations and all the above i mention gives pause for thought right?
Yeah, and when I was a kid, I had to trudge uphill to school — both ways! (That’s actually true, when SF is involved.)
actually, i mean NEXT year as this year is a moot point.
just sat through the endless, headache of a movie called AMERICAN HUSTLE and (as with SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK) once again lost my faith in the Academy–when did they fall so deeply in love with the snoozy pretentiousness of David O. Russell?. yet, going over the list for this year’s achievements, i’m missing the make up artists for THE HOBBITT 2. they lost out last year to the smudged faces and bad teeth in LES MISERABLES as well. hopefully this year those amazing artists that turn those Brit and Aussie thespians into dwarfs and orcs will be rewarded. and yes, i know, most won for RINGS, but artistry is artistry and they do a smashing job.
Each time somebody brought it up in the thread, you went into a tizzy, Ryan. I knew it’d happen again, and Q.E.D.
It’s OK. We love you for the snarky “gotta have the last word” cinephile that you are. 🙂
Don’t tell me how to use the English language, Tony, and make it sound as if I’m being a sneak. Was a long nonstop day on 4 hrs sleep. Do you not think I get tired of ridiculous pointless digs at insignificant details of what I do? Yes I know how to defend myself with facts when confronted by bullshit. Nice of you to admit you intentionally set out to push my buttons knowing it would get under my skin if you poked at me — but you did it anyway, just for kicks. Fine friend and human being you are.
I actually came into August almost totally blind, using the almost qualifier because though I knew absolutely nothing about the play, because I had watched Bug purely on your recommendation for my October Halloween marathon, I at least had some familiarity with Tracy Letts and the very dark places he can go.
I’m not a big fan of John Wells in general – I feel The West Wing to a huge dive in quality when he took over as series showrunner once Aaron Sorkin left. But I thought the camerawork was fine – boing and static, sure, but the focus remains on the actors. And again, I never saw the play in any iteration, so I don’t have a reference level, but I thought the ensemble was uniformly great, headlined by Streep and an absolute career-best performance in Roberts, whom I’ve largely derided as a one-trick pony and whom I thought could never hold her own in a film against a master technician like Streep. The only real weak links I thought were Cumberbatch (though he could pass for Chris Cooper’s son IRL) and Lewis, but as I learned, Karen Weston was supposed to be the superficial and vain youngest child. And Lewis does that competently.
But yeah, I always memorize at least one film’s dialogue in its entirety every year, being the nerd I am, and this year it’s August. So many great lines from Letts.
Disappointed that the Coens groupies didn’t come through more for Llewyn Davis as well (though I did predict the Sound Mixing nom!), but some of my favorite surprises:
The AMPAS music branch giving a fucking score nod to Arcade Fire! And Her scoring production design and “Moon Song” nods to boot!
Streep getting her 18th Oscar nomination for arguably the darkest performance of her career, and her most tragic since Sophie’s Choice. Glad AMPAS voters were eating their catfish.
Nebraska’s 6 nominations – wonderful, funny film. Wished Forte was getting a lot more attention, but that’s awards season.
3/5ths of this year’s cinematography lineup being Coens DPs, stacking the deck that one of them (Deakins, Delbonnel, Lubezki) is finally going to win their first Oscar.
Jonah Hill getting in for Wolf. The Hill – Spike Jonze Oscar good luck charm is now batting 2/2 (although its too bad the editing branch eschewed Schoonmaker)
Streep getting her 18th Oscar nomination for arguably the darkest performance of her career, and her most tragic since Sophie’s Choice.
At first I was just too stunned and sad to see how much the play had been truncated and how condensing it to 66% threatened to wring all the deep emotional sense out of it. If John Wells doesn’t know where to put a camera (and he doesn’t) then he should’ve found a strong-willed cinematographer who wasn’t as static as Wells himself. But the movie is the movie and we’re lucky to have it. The play is a great read (and I can read it without the voices in my head overacting). I’ve seen enough of the stage play’s performance in lengthy youtube clips to know what the movie ought to have been. But I’m easing off my original feeling that every role except Margo Martindale was miscast. I do wish there was a way to believe these characters could possibly be related, and it might have been neat if they’d had a meeting and decided on one accent instead of ten. But under all these near-disastrous circumstances Meryl Streep pretty much rescues the movie single-handedly. She saved it from being Who’s Afraid of Virginia Ham by basting that ham with glazed eyes. Right frightful.
It’s just as easy (and more accurate) to write: “Gravity, American Hustle lead 86th Annual Oscar Nominations, followed closely by 12 Years a Slave”
And, most importantly, it’s *infinitely* more anal-retentive and pedantic.
Thanks Marshall.
God forbid we use this page to talk about the actual nominations. How about the nicest surprises this morning?
Reason to smile for me, the 6 major nominations for Nebraska — a movie that many had all but written off because it hasn’t caught fire at the box-office.
Also, I’m glad to see at least the sound guys understand what the Coens were up with the roar of road noise. And the visualizers know artistry when the see it in The Grandmaster and Gatsby, despite the plotty-plot plodders who need to be talked through a movie’s meaning with talky talk.
“Gravity, American Hustle, 12 Years a Slave lead 86th Annual Oscar Nominations”
Melissa Harris-Perry & Co. would ask, “Which one of these is not like the others?”
It’s just as easy (and more accurate) to write: “Gravity, American Hustle lead 86th Annual Oscar Nominations, followed closely by 12 Years a Slave”
Hey Tony, nothing better to do tonight than aggravate me with this nonsense?
‘Hustle,’ ‘Gravity,’ ‘Slave’ lead Oscar nominations
Why don’t you whiny crybabies go nag the Boston Globe.
‘American Hustle,’ ‘Gravity,’ ’12 Years a Slave’ lead Oscar race
Why don’t you expert prose stylists go crawl up Reuters butt instead of mine.
Where did you go to school that you don’t understand how to use the English language?

Oscar Nominations: ’12 Years a Slave,’ ‘Gravity,’ ‘American Hustle’ Lead the Pack
gosh, in regards to AH, haters gonna hate …
John C,
I liked Amy Adams in AH, although Blanchett is a heavy favorite to win the Oscar. Regarding the “god-awful British accent,” remember, Adams wasn’t playing a British woman, she was playing an American trying to fake a British accent. I would have chosen Thompson for a nomination over Dench – while I’m a big Dench fan, I think Philomena is vastly overrated.
I am a bit upset with the choices in the Best Actor and Actress race. How in the HELL did Tom Hanks and Robert Redford not get nominated? I thought they were much better than Christian Bale and Bruce Dern. Not to mention that the last 15 minutes of Phillips was the best acting Hanks ever did in his career (and that’s saying something). As for the Actress category, I am shocked that Emma Thompson was snubbed. I was so sure that the Oscar for actress would have been between Blanchett and her. For my surprise pick….does Jonah Hill have naked pictures of the entire Oscar committee? It was a disgrace for him to have got his first nomination in one of the worst baseball movies ever made (if you know the Oakland A’s team you will know why Moneyball was garbage) but to get his second for the Wolf baffles me! I am ok with the other selections.
Jason Travis. Thank you!! I am glad I am not alone. I am tired of this presumptuous attitude and mentality that 12 Year is doomed because it missed out score and cinematography. Sasha is predicting AH so she won’t feel too disappointed. Sasha, and 12 Years gang, have some faith, let’s see until PGA,DGA, and SAG.
Chiwetel Ejiofor is still very much in the race. Don’t be fooled!
Meryl streep again? so as long as she’s in a movie she get a nom.
Not true, notable Streep snubs;
-Heartburn
-Defending Your Life
-The River Wild
-Marvins Room
-The Hours
-Hope Springs
Didn’t watch All is Lost so can’t speak to Redford’s performance, but Bale and especially DiCaprio are certainly deserving. Hanks was deserving as well for just the last 15 minutes of that movie, shocked he got left off, I would’ve put him in the 5th spot over Bale, but not complaining too much.
Sickening for Emma Thompson that she got snummbed and Amy is in. Amy Adams is the weakest link of American Hustle, that god-awful British accent, I don’t understand the surge in the love for her performance recently. Bale and Cooper carry that film, not her. Emma Thompson IS her entire movie and she gives a phenomenal performance.
Now, for what it’s worth, I think people should be nice to the psychic lady. Even if she was wrong. She’s just having fun like the rest of us, and I think we should respect that.
Besides, a lot of us were wrong about a few predictions. I know I was. I was consistently getting 4 of 5 right, but missing that last 1.
I missed the Philomena getting nomination for Best Picture.
So, now that we finally have the nominees, now starting tomorrow we’re essentially back to the start of December again.
December 1 – January 16 = month and a half
January 17 – March 2 = month and a half
ugh…. time to hurry up and wait again….
Overall i don’t see much in the way of surprises, there were always going to be omissions in a year where clearly six or seven or more were earmarked for noms and only 5 were given. The three movies that everyone had been tipping as the main contenders – are!
History keeps writing itself, but it may quieten some of the repeat mantras such as ‘They love the Coens’ (not this year), they love Tom Hanks (not any more), they dislike Leo (i don’t think so – 4th nomination before turning 40). Now that she has her 3rd Oscar we’ll never hear of Meryl Streep again (that was one of mine – my bad))
On with the show! Good stuff I say…..
Here’s one of today’s unlikeliest losers: The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Jan. 30-Feb. 9). Obviously timed to exploit the Academy glow, it has scheduled tributes to now-non-Oscar nominees Robert Redford, Emma Thompson, Oprah Winfrey and Forest Whitaker. They also have a salute to film Virtuosos that includes Daniel Bruhl, Adele Exarchopoulus, Oscar Isaac, Michael B. Jordan and Brie Larson.
And again, none of the acting category nominee comes from a film that isn’t nominated in other categories – what we see are same people circling around in the same movies. There is really no fun. Really.
Exactly correct. Promotion is very important in this business. Inside Llewyn Davis suffered because it was backed by CBS Films. If it was backed by someone like Harvey it would end up nominated for BP + BD quite easily. American Hustle is not on my top ten list yet it ends up with 10 nominations..!
Oh, I forgot about the biggest elephant in the room- Argo ladies and gentleman! How many nods did it get last year? I think 7 was the count, wasn’t it? And it WON bitches! Over 12 nods for Lincoln, 11 for Life of Pi and 8 for Russell’s SLP.
Again, stop with this herd mentality of “Oh 12 Years a Slave only got 9 and missed crucial nods in…Cinematography and score.” Right. Argo missed a crucial bid in- BEST DIRECTOR. Still won.
Nothing is certain until more begins to happen. Nothing.
I agree, sami. I’ve not been as impressed with a single performance as I was with Adele’s in a long time…
Of course it’s still in the race… It’s just not the favorite anymore, AH is, and a pretty big one. But let’s wait for the guilds, shall we? Until then, everyone is in it, more or less, as Argo proved last year.
Meryl streep again? so as long as she’s in a movie she get a nom. I can’t believe Adèle Exarchopoulos didn’t get a nom. I’m not really surprise but its a shame that small movies or foreign movies get snubbed. Her performance i think was the best in a past decade
Preach it Jason Travis!
“12 Years a Slave is still very much in this race. 9 nominations is great. Just because your film does not SWEEP the nominations, does not mean it won’t win. Million Dollar Baby had 7 nominations in 2004 compared to The Aviator’s 12- still won. Curious Case of Benjamin Button had 13 nods in 2008, still lost to Slumdog Millionaire. Again- don’t buy the Kool-Aid that is American Hustle. It got in because of marketing- its not a great film at all. “
David, I get Brie Larson or Keith Stanfield should’ve gotten nominations but why, and how, are you so surprised by their snubs? If you followed the season closely you’ll realize their chances were so small. When people would say to you it probably won’t happen, that wasn’t to dissuade you into thinking your choices are not good ones but to reinforce this point, it’s a science. I doubt many people saw such a small movie. If I were you I would’ve realized that film stood nearly no chance after the Golden Globes, SAGs and BAFTAs came out. The BFCA nominating the movie was great but that’s the highest it was going to go and I’d say that is a helluva victory for the movie. You could cheer all you want but you should’ve been prepared for this.
The fact that Leo was passionate about this movie from the ground-up. Getting the rights, chasing Marty, being a producer and a star of the film. Delivering the performance of his career! Finally becoming the King!
It’s time! So far McConaughey has the edge but I think that all these NBR collaboration awards and Santa Barbara Vanguard Awards must amount to something – I.e that Leo is an Academy and industry leader and someone who has had consistently a great and wonderful career. Joaquin clapped so respectfully at the Globes (and I love Joaquin).
It’s time to finally give the Oscar to Leo! He deserves it. He is not the front runner but overall, I think it would be the best decision that the Academy can make..
Leo, baby! Yeah!!!! And Marty and Jonah and Terry and the Movie! A little sad about Thelma but she’s won couple if times before.
12 Years got shut out of Best Score and Best Cinematography which is NOT good.
Anyway! I agree that it’s between Leo and Alright alright (McConaughey)!
Tonight I suspect that it might be a very good night for 12 Years though. I actually want Chiwetel or Dern to get the Best Actor with Leo grabbing the Best Comedy Actor to keep his buzz growing. The SAG will probably go to Mathew but I’d rather hope that they go to Dern. The more split the race becomes between McConaughey and Ejiofor the more Leo becomes a clear-cut alternative. It’s 20 years since his first nomination. And a what a wonderful way it would to cap that career with an Oscar (received from Jennifer Lawrence like at the Globes). It would be beautiful..
This is the year to prove that – forerunners are not favored at all. The forerunner in the middle of the year such as Oprah and all the Butler team faded out. Emma Thompson, who had been a sure shot, got snubbed. Inside Llewyn Davis, which was already critically acclaimed at Cannes in May (actually much better rated than Nebraska) and aiming at award season, ended up nothing but technical recognition. Robert Redford, who was also on the top list of consideration, fell short – as well as Tom Hanks.
And let’s be really honest – is American Hustle really this great? every major category? If you think about the fact that Bradley Cooper has already got two nominations in his pocket and many other great actors none, it’s somehow not very convincing.
And again, none of the acting category nominee comes from a film that isn’t nominated in other categories – what we see are same people circling around in the same movies. There is really no fun. Really.
I’m late to this party, but first I have to do this:
AAAAHHHH!!!! (DAMN IT!!!)
That was for no Inside Llewyn Davis for Best Picture and no Robert Redford for Lead Actor.
Now, what I am happy for:
Gravity and The Wolf of Wall Street
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill
12 Years a Slave
Steve McQueen
Over-all great nominees, some things though:
– 12 Years a Slave is still very much in this race.
– Cate Blanchett will still win Best Actress. Amy Adams is missing that crucial SAG and BFCA nod, and by Saturday she will be out of the limelight. No woman has won the Oscar for best actress without a SAG nod, am I right? Adams shouldn’t even be here, let alone win- she’s fine in the movie, but this should have gone to Adele or Thompson. Blanchett has GG (Drama), NYFCC, NSFC, LAFCA so even if she misses SAG and BFCA, she still takes BAFTA and Oscar I say.
– Christian Bale in over Tom Hanks, Robert Redford and Forest Whitaker??? Shameful. Utterly shameful. These nods will look foolish once the dust settles.
– I still say Gravity or 12 Years a Slave win Best Picture; Curaon is a lock for director, and I can’t see the academy overlooking McQueen for top prize in favor of Russell’s hamfest. I hope AH goes 0 for 10 at the ceremony.
– Jennifer Lawrence, however, looks good to take her Supporting Actress trophy since a) Oprah is out, and b) there’s no other competitor in the lineup that is truly competitive except Nyong’o. And she seems too new and underappreciated. Squibb would be nice but I doubt it. Roberts is a category fraud in a love/hate movie. And Hawkins, while a great citation, is overshadowed by Blanchett. SAG will clear a lot of things up but BAFTA could have more to say.
– Matthew McConaughey looks good to win Best Actor, but DiCaprio could pull an upset. He also, though- is not a SAG nominee. Does that count?
@Marcus – As I have said previously, any BP with such a strong acting nom list tends to have at least one acting win. Unfortunately, it isn’t going to be Supporting Actor or Actor, it has to be Lupita. Interesting you mentioned Oprah, because I am pretty sure she’ll throw everything to campaigning for 12YAS. If 12YAS wins BP (which I think it will), Lupita should be in for the winning.
Anyone but Jennifer Lawrence please! Her performance was not that good!!!! Seriously!
I don’t think it’s just between Jlaw and Lupita. Maybe for now. But remember Harvey can now focus on campaigning Julia since Oprah was snubbed. And when Julia campaigns, she campaigns!
And Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey who were all snubbed are her friends. They might have been snubbed but they are still big players in Hollywood.
Actually 12YAS wouldn’t be winning BP without at least a BD or an acting win, given strong nominations in both categories. I’m putting my money in Lupita over the undeserved Lawrence, with Adams potentially ousting Blanchett (undeservedly) for the Actress. Director’s race is still wide open. Ideally AH shouldn’t be winning ANYTHING and I will party hard if that happens.
http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/01/16/oscar-academy-awards-best-races/
For anyone needing to break up the monotony of Oscar nominee reactions, the above article makes for a pretty fun read.
I still find it questionable that Hustle can win Picture without winning director. Maybe if it snakes two acting wins? Gladiator and Chicago pulled off the split with an acting win and technical wins, so that would be AH’s path without BD.
12 Years cannot win without director, script, and an acting win.
Gravity pretty much needs director and a near clean sweep of the technical awards to pull off the upset.
My predictions

Anyway, forgot to add: FUCK YEAH SALLY HAWKINS!
I really hope Bradley Cooper wins, he is amazing, great, fantastic in this beautiful entertaining movie called American Hustle!
David O Russell, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence- most overrated people to have walked the face of earth. I am not kidding. If either of these people win this year, the Oscars will be treated as an utter joke from now on.
Byron: “It’s not like academy members sit down and think I’m not voting for him or her because I hated working with them in the past or I think they’re an ass.”
Are you kidding me? Of course they do! It’s the ultimate payback.
Why do you think the terrific Faye Dunaway didn’t receive a nomination for Best Actress in “Mommie Dearest” in 1981? It’s because everybody (cast and crew) hated working with her.
So I saw The Secret Life of Walter Mitty last night, I didn’t turn off my phone I just lowered the volume, I set the alarm clock for 5:30 am to watch the announcement, alarm went off but I didn’t hear it, fuck!
Anyway, so glad my top 5 films (as of last night) are best picture nominees…
1. Gravity
2. Her
3. 12 Years a Slave
4. Philomena
5. Dallas Buyers Club
…I’m watching Nebraska & Inside Llewyn Davis back-to-back on Saturday, so that’ll probably change. And the foreign films are nowhere to be found in this nook of the USA, so I have to wait for their videos to be available on Amazon, Netflix or Redbox.
Captain Phillips & American Hustle, expected & agreeable. The Wolf of Wall Street, expected but quite disagreeable for me, as much as I’m a huge fan of Scorsese & I’m no prude by any stretch. I’m thinking Marty wanted to have fun with this film but it turned out to be horseplay & in the end laughable, maybe that’s why the Golden Globes categorized it a comedy. And no Blackfish, understandable. It’s news, it’s relevant, I don’t doubt the veracity of the testimonies and it should be a concern for us all, but I didn’t find artistic merit in that film, just interviews & footages, it did air on CNN & should win a Pulitzer (if it qualifies).
It’s quite amusing that Barkhad Abdi beat out Tom Hanks for a supporting actor slot & then Tom missing out on best actor.
American Hustle with 4 acting nominations, well, we all know what happened to Silver Linings Playbook last year, so Gravity for BP & BD!!!
I have so much more to say but I have appointments. See ya’ll later!
not Lupito
correcting
Lupita Nyong’o
sorry 🙂
Keith Stanfield got robbed!!!!! “Alone Yet Not Alone” WTF is this steals his Best Original Song Nomination!!!!!
WOW. The Academy outdid themselves this year with some gutsy calls. All the right people voted in, including all the surprises and some favorites voted out, for a magnificent list of film makers that are truly deserving. Looks like “American Hustle” and “Gravity” are now the favorites to win Best Picture.
“I think HER is the favorite in both the Original Song and Original Score categories. I see no big competition.” – Sammy
I hope so, Her’s music was absolutely pivotal to the film’s success; it gave so much life to Samantha.
“12 Years a Slave” is the frontrunner, but if there’s an upset in best picture category, it will be “American Hustle.”
“Matthew McConaughey” is still the frontrunner, but if there’s an upset in best actor category, it will be Leonardo DiCaprio.
“Cate Blanchett” is still the frontrunner, but if there’s an upset in best actress category, it will be “Amy Adams.”
“Jennifer Lawrence” is still the frontrunner, but if there’s an upset in best supporting actress category, it will be Lupito Nyong’o.
I think HER is the favorite in both the Original Song and Original Score categories. I see no big competition.

My predictions:
^^
You have more faith in 12 Yrs winning those awards more than I do. I think it’s going to be between Gravity and 12 YRS and 12 Yrs will probably get Best Supporting actress ONLY.
This is mostly a white voting demographic. I would be surprised if the older (white) voters even watch 12 Years. But somehow I feel the older voters will totally turn off WOW.
WOW is rated 79% by the critics. The lowest rating of all the movies, so I’m betting it doesn’t win.
By the way, William Butler is listed for original score for Her. I thought it was frontman Win Butler who would get listed? I know Win and William are brothers.
Sammy, 3 nominations for Spike Jonze made my morning better.
Dallas Buyers Club…the acting deserved the nominations. Best picture? On the fence. Original screenplay? Not quite. Editing? Hell fucking no. That is the last of the BP nominees that should make it into editing when you consider Rush and Wolf of Wall Street missed.
Speaking of Wolf, I loved it but in this strong of a year I can only back it in editing and adapted screenplay, maybe supporting actor and maybe picture. Best actor and director? Not for me, not in this big of a year.
I do feel Jonze should’ve gotten in for director and if it was gonna miss in cinematography, actor and supporting actress, I would’ve loved to have seen in in for editing and sound mixing. The mixing really was incredible.
Well . . . SOMEBODY had to be overlooked. They can’t nominate every actor for everything.
If Streep beat out Thompson, then I can live with that. I think Streep gives the performance of her career.
If Leonardo beat out Redford and Hanks, then I can live with that. di Caprio is one actor everyone out there seems to think is overdue. So I’m happy for him. Haven’t seen the movie – but will this weekend – just to confirm what I think may be his best performance. I thought he was remarkable as J. Gatsby in “The Great Gatsby”.
Crying over the following:
AH’s unnecessary nominations.
Blackfish being dumped.
Hobbit dumped for Art Direction
Pacific Rim snubbed for VFX
BUT THE BIGGEST SNUBS:
Christian Bale over Joaquin Phoenix
Alexander Payne over Spike Jonze (How I loved every second of it)
No “Young and Beautiful” for Best Song from “The Great Gatsby”?
Once again, the song branch fucks up. They failed to nominate the most beautiful song by Lana del Rey.
Reminds me of two years when they overlooked Mary K. Blige “Living Proof” from “The Help”.
This branch needs to be totally overhauled.
It all depends on PGA and DGA now. What’s with the the prediction of winning best picture?? Don’t lose hope yet, I guess we are frightened by Crash winning. If Crash could win, yeah, I guess AH could win, but never underestimate the power of 12 Years a Slave.
At least that film about man-dog fucking “The Christmas Candle,” didn’t get a nomination.
The proper physics headline would be “No movies about Einstein nominated for Oscar.”
Not the biggest snub (BANKS – THOMPSON!), but also no Monsters University! 🙁
Hoo-Boy. Did anyone look up “Alone Yet Not Alone?” What the good god almighty is that cheesy inspirational Christian drivel? I believe this would be a first, no? A nomination for a micro-budget Christian B-movie?
I’ve always been a proponent of the Best Song category but even I think it’s time to retire it now.
Her making it in score and production design is amazing. Sean Bobbitt missing cinematography is really shitty, like the one true missed call the Oscars made this year. But fear not, people. There have been recent best picture winners without a cinematography nomination: Argo, The Departed, Crash, Million Dollar Baby and Return of the King. Those last 4 won consecutively.
I said a while back on IMDb (right before the DGA nominations, I believe) that I had a strong feeling Jonze wasn’t getting in for Director and Payne was, and after the DGA I was sure of Marty as well.
Other thoughts:
“Bryce – Sean Bobbitt’s absence is not good for 12YAS’ chances. Almost every BP winner had that nod in the past.”
Um, not really… It’s almost 50-50 since 2000, actually… It was indeed more important in the 90s and 80s, but apparently not anymore. And yeah, like somebody else said, AH doesn’t have that nomination either.
“Roll on Jordan should have been in the song category.”
Don’t think that’s what it’s called, but, anyway, I think it’s not in because the category is Best ORIGINAL Song.
“DALLAS BUYERS CLUB an editing nomination? Please ruin my day”
I hadn’t really thought about it until now but, yeah, that does seem kind of wrong… Movie’s very good but not because of the editing.
“The only thing I care about this awards season is that Lubezki finally win the Oscar for cinematography.”
Must be nice… I wish I was rooting for such locks…
What’s really gonna be funny is when Inside Llewyn Davis sweeps tonight at the Critics Choice Awards.
Jonah Hill in – Daniel Brühl out. Big travesty…
“Lee Daniels…is watching the Oscars at home” for alternate title
Be glad I didn’t write the headline. It might have been something like “PHILOMENA nominated for Best Picture. A great day for steaming piles of shit everywhere!”
12 Years a Slave has to win the Oscar, for good taste 12 Years a Slave must be the winner.
I’m wondering where Vily (the Leo and Wolf biggest passionate fan) is right now. I’m really worried, actually. He might just have had a heart attack this morning.
Hey, Vily, are you fine?
My predictions:
– Best Picture to “12 Years a Slave” (“Gravity being the posible spoiler) with 5 wins in total.
-” Gravity” the other big winner of the night with 6 wins.
– “American Hustle” the biggest failure doing a “Gangs of New York”.
BEST PICTURE: 12 YEARS A SLAVE/GRAVITY (can’t decide)
BEST DIRECTOR: ALFONSO CUARÓN – GRAVITY
BEST ACTOR: CHIWETEL EJIOFOL – 12 YEARS A SLAVE
BEST ACTRESS: CATE BLANCHETT – BLUE JASMINE
BEST SUPP. ACTOR: JARED LETO – DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
BEST SUPP. ACTRESS: LUPITA N’YONGO – 12 YEARS A SLAVE
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: 12 YEARS A SLAVE
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE: FROZEN
BEST FOREING FILM: THE GREAT BEAUTY – ITALY
BEST SCORE: GRAVITY
BEST SOUND EDITING: GRAVITY
BEST SOUND MIXING: CAPTAIN PHILLPS
BEST PRODUCTION DESING: THE GREAT GATSBY
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: GRAVITY
BEST MAKE UP: DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
BEST COSTUME DESING: 12 YEARS A SLAVE
BEST EDITING: GRAVITY
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS: GRAVITY
“Lee Daniels…is watching the Oscars at home” for alternate title
And I miss the “Best Picture five” days… I’m so fed up with these 9 nominees year after year. I can no longer imagine a year with less than that. It must be mathematically impossible and they’re starting to realize that.
This American Hustle lovefest screwed things up for Tom Hanks, Robert Redford and Emma Thompson big time… I was happy to think they would be nominated… 🙁
And deep down I couldn’t imagine Streep being left out… What was I thinking when I thought she would miss??
“brave” is right for HER. Huuuuuge risks and Jonze triumphs on every single gamble
Ugh I might like PHILOMENA better than DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
Kyle – HER has got to win PGA. So there is still hope…
No PACIFIC RIM in vfx? words fail me
happy for leo and meryl
watched dallas buyers club last night so happy for it and MM / leto
have to watch blue jasmine tonight
but very happy for cate , she deserves on her acting talent alone to get a 2nd oscar before sandra bullock (as much as i love sandra as a romantic lead actress)
yet to see 12YAS might give in and get the screener, cannot for the life understand what my theatre is waiting for to show this
very disturbed by AH noms WTF ugh i can’t even , anything is better than this in all categories
i’m glad i watched AH screener first , because ever since i’ve seen screeners of August osage county / Her / dallas buyers club / saving mr banks and WoWS at the cinema and they’re all better than it by a wide margin
No love for Pacific Rim in the sound/VFX catergories? Ouch
In tennis, who leads the field? Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, and Murray. Are they all #1 at once? No.
Come on people, what Ryan wrote isn’t so difficult to understand. Those three films he listed LEAD all the others that come after them in terms of nominations.
LOL ==> https://twitter.com/ianbarr/status/423840691093901312/photo/1/large
Ryan I don’t blame you for the headline, but the – The Washington Fucking Post has an article which is a mess: they mention 10 noms for American Hustle the 9 for 12 Years a Slave and then…. down the page… down… the 10 noms for Gravity.
It is obvious that one tries to underline what he/she wants, it’s the reader that has to read, understand and decide what to think.
I considered the headline
“Wolf of Wall Street earns 5 times more Oscar nominations than Saving Mr Banks!”
Chris Price – I agree that 12YAS will eventually go home with just an adapted screenplay win – sad but true.
WOW I’m never thinking “am I trolling ever again?” ever again
I’ve been going through some really dark times lately in my personal life, and I’ve got to say a big THANKS to everyone on this website – reading all your rants and raves this morning totally cheered me up. I can’t tell you how much I love all the exaggerations and hyperboles. I love that someone said they would throw shit at their TV if Her didn’t get nominated for BP. Anyway, even when I’m depressed as snot, knowing there’s you all out there who love movies as much as I do makes me feel a hell of a lot better. THANK YOU. And to indulge myself, here are my rants and raves:
YAAA for any love Her got, although I wish it got more. I agree with those hailing it as a masterpiece, such a brave movie, imo BP of the year (though I can admit it has no chance of winning unfortunately).
BOOO for AH tying for top nominations and bumping more powerful, memorable choices like Redford, Hanks and Jonze. I agree that AH is super forgettable and such a tepid BP choice (I’m really starting to see what Sasha means by the Academy going for the most middle-of-the-road movies lately and it’s beginning to piss me off too)
YAAA for Leo, Marty and Sally.
BOOO for the Saving Mr. Banks, Inside Llewyn Davis snubs, that’s too bad. I also wish Blue Jasmine and Before Midnight got a little more love, because imo they’re just as good if not better than Nebraska and Philomena which are still great movies in their own right)
. . . and that’s Stanley Tucci IN CHARACTER from Hunger Games.
Wouldn’t it be a nice touch if Stanley Tucci (“Hunger Games”) were Oscar emcee? 🙂
NOT RACISM, YES 12 YEARS A SLAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My award for best picture not to receive any nominations is Fruitville Station which is better than 6 of the films nominated
Runner up Short Term 12 better than 4 of the best picture mominations.
Both films a lot better than the Wolf of Wall Street .
‘American Hustle,’ ‘Gravity’ and ‘12 Years a Slave’ lead Academy Award nominees
– The Washington Fucking Post
The wind Rises leads the best animated category with ONE nom!
Great!!!
“Brock,
I loved “Inside Llewyn Davis” and would have liked to see it on the best pic list, but we can’t blame the academy for being too low brow for the Coens. This is the awards group after all that nominated “Fargo,” “No Country for Old Men” and “A Serious Man” for their top prize, and gave “True Grit” 10 nominations when it didn’t make a blip on the precursor circuit. Let’s be fair…”
Exactly. That was my point I was trying to make, but couldn’t conjure up all the numbers and Id forgotten about the True Grit lovefest! I liked the movie but it’s just not the requisite Coen Masterpiece.
How can anyone claim the Coens could ever be snubbed?
A great film that deserved acting nominations in all 4 categories was Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (in fact the only film to be nominated in every eligible category).
PS: Jonze – Producing Her
Sammy,
TRUE. Wow
Headlines:
“‘American Hustle,’ ‘Gravity’ lead Oscar nominations” –USA Today
“American Hustle,’ ‘Gravity’ fortify their front-runner status with 10 nominations” –LA Times
“‘American Hustle,’ ‘Gravity’ lead Oscar nominations with 10 apiece” –Gold Derby
“Oscar Nominations 2014: ‘American Hustle’ and ‘Gravity’ Lead Field” –The New York Times
“Gravity, American Hustle, 12 Years a Slave lead 86th Annual Oscar Nominations” – Awards Daily
Spike Jonze has been nominated in THREE categories:
Best Picture
Best Original Screenplay
Best Song
Would you guys cut the shit on the headline? What Ryan wrote makes perfect sense. Ever watch an Olympics? They give out 3 medals. So during a race they often say that there are 3 people in the lead. It’s the same damn thing. Any number of contestants at the front of a large group can be considered “in the lead”. Stop being buttheads.
Now they’re gonna blame Meryl for SMB taken down… for a speech in the eve of the ballots deadline?
Really… the first Disney film with Walt Disney himself portrayed by… Tom Hanks and they couldn’t score a single Best Supporting Actor nomination from SAG/GG/BAFTA/BFCA?? That couldn’t score a SAG ensemble but The Butler, August: Osage County and Dallas Buyers Club could?
That film was taken down a long time ago… BY DISNEY, who imploded it with a disastrous marketing strategy.
This is going to be a long run before the winners reveal. Still more than a month to go, which means campaigns will just start to turn everything over. We realized that Weinstein actually gave up The Butler to support August and Philomena, which works really efficiently.
So the whole running of award season will lead to a very different result than everyone expected two months ago: Now that Philomena has been a multi-nominee, Dame Judi Dench might end up winning her first-ever Leading Actress – because it’s Weinstein, because it’s her age and her lifetime achievement and never winning for leading role, because it’s a very different performance from her, which is much more heart-warming for the Academy than Blanchett. So, I think Judi Dench will pass through others for all these effects.
Matthew McConaughey will be another example, for his hard-working, for his method-acting, for his transformation, and for his Hollywood fame. And Dallas Buyers Club was nominated for best film – which will add up some points definitely. So no matter how brilliant Chiwetel Ejiofor is, this award will eventually go to Mr. Texas.
And since the best film will now go to American Hustle, one of the actors might go home with acting award, which might go to Jennifer Lawrence, again. But 12 years a Slave has to win something, so Steve McQueen will take home with director and write Academy history, which is what the members like to see.
Here’s my prediction:
Film – American Hustel / Director – Mcqueen / Actress – Dench / Actor – McConaughey / Supporting Actor – Leto / Supporting Actress – Lawrence
though I totally hate this result, I see this coming…
Congrats to leo and jared!!!!
“I knew Meryl’s speech at NBR was a devious plot to take Emma Thompson’s spot. She pretended to praise Emma while really destroying the film and Walt Disney’s character and she took down the film and everyone associated with it. Good Job Meryl! Really good job!”
I’m sure tongue is firmly planted in cheek, but I’ve been waiting for the conspiracy theorists to cry afoul of that speech – that was given the night before ballots were due….
Oh, Live Action Short: That Wasn’t Me
I would really like to know the answer to this question:
In the first two years of rule change, we had a top 10 in BP…In the past 3 years, we had 9 films nominated for Best Picture after the rule was changed again… what is the f… difference between having 9 or 10 films?????
It’s fair to include 12 Years as “leading” together with Gravity and AH – it’s got 9 nods and among them are the big categories.
Ryan, your attitude stinks. 🙂
Also, anyone wth me betting on AH taking home 0 Oscars…
Predicting Winners:
Picture: AMERICAN HUSTLE
Director: Alfonso Cuaron
Actor: Matthew McConaughey
Actress: Cate Blanchett
S. Actor: Jared Leto
S. Actress: Jennifer Lawrence
O. Screenplay: HER
A. Screenplay: 12 YEARS A SLAVE
Editing: GRAVITY
Cinematography: GRAVITY
Production Design: AMERICAN HUSTLE
Costume Design: THE GREAT GATSBY

Animated Feature: FROZEN
Animated Short: MR. HUBLOT
Documentary Feature: THE ACT OF KILLING
Documentary Short: THE LADY IN NUMBER 6
Sound Editing: GRAVITY
Sound Mixing: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS
Visual Effects: GRAVITY
Gravity wins 6 Oscars, including Director, but misses picture to American Hustle, which wins 3. Dallas Buyers Club matches Hustle’s wins with 3 of its own. 12 Years A Slave walks away with an Adapted Screenplay win.
ok so i re-looked over the nominations. i probly will scan them like five times today.
interesting that they chose dallas buyers club over something like fruitvale station. the bets picture nominees are really sad.
and im sorry but i cannot get behind the bradley cooper train. i do not see the appeal.
oh and im really dissapointed for tom hanks though as he gave one of my favorite performances of this year. it just doesnt feel right to nominate barkhad abdi and not tom hanks. shit that like really bothers me.
again really bothered by the thompson snub. i was hoping for bullock.
i wasnt overly shocked david russell did his little thing yet again but i dont think it was deserved for best actor/supporting actor.
anyway i am going to be bold and predict amy adams wins the oscar. not because she desevres it but because its what politics is shaping up to do this year. i also think leo might have a strong chance to win as well. well see.
The “licensed psychic” lady tried to jump off the George Washington Bridge but couldn’t get through because of the traffic pile-up. 🙂
Ryan, “lead” means first place (Gravity and Hustle has 10, 12 Years has 9)–pretty clear who has the most noms. Come on, don’t give us the “Huffington Post and everyone else is doing it” excuse.
Let’s be fair.
It’s not about nomination counts; it’s about underperforming and overperforming now that we’ve seen the nominations for every other precursor award. It’s our way of figuring out how the Academy’s tastes differ from the industry as a whole.
